My photographer and i have been driving around las vegas today. Weve been observing people who are here, asking why youre here. A lot of people come for celebrations for weddings, to get away. One man though, flew here from the bay area to donate blood. Across from the Las Vegas Trauma Center where hundreds of victims were taken the night of the shooting is a blood drive. Showing up today to give blood, the very doctors and nurses who have been caring for the shooting victims since sunday night. Ive worked for United Blood Services for 30 years, and ive never seen anything like this. Its hard to imagine potentially what the blood needs could be for 527 patients admitted to hospitals. Youre supposed to squeeze this every five seconds. Reporter he flew to las vegas to be with his mom, so the two could give blood today together. Thanks mom. Reporter he calls vegas his second home. Ive never donated blood before. Its kind of unfortunate, this is the first thing that inspired me to do it. Now i know how to do it, and hopefully i can make this kind of a habit. Reporter signs reading pray for vegas. We stopped to find this couple putting up an american flag, only to learn theyre not from the united states. Theyre from switzerland. They came to las vegas for their honeymoon, and spent part of it on lockdown in their hotel, when there were reports an active shooter was on the loose. Today, they came to pay their respects to the victims. Were thinking about all the victims. Its our honeymoon, so beginning our honeymoon with this, its touching. Reporter following the las vegas shooting, the topic of security is front and center now at big festivals and at fleet week in the bay area. Theres also a big festival in austin, texas, coming up. The organizers are talking about their security. Theyre going to have seen, and unseen security. Were going to be seeing bigger changes now, and maybe changes to the venue, and where would soft targets be, vs. Hard targets and hotel rooms, and all of that sort of thing. Obviously, a topic of conversation that a lot of people in las vegas say theyre not going to let it change their behavior, and where do they go when they come here . The wife of a San Francisco Police Officer was among those killed in the attacks. Stacee etcheber was a mother of two from novato. During the shooting, her husband vinny told hour to run to safety while he stayed behind to help the wounded. Stacee never made it out. Reporter ken, by all accounts, stacee was a beloved member of the community. She worked at a hair salon in Historic Downtown novato. Just a moment ago, a car pulled up and said are you guys here for stacee, i said yes. The woman nodded her head, shed a tear and drove off. What a charismatic person she is, amend just a a loving person railroad the mother of two, and her husband, vinny, an officer assigned to sfpds northern station were at the three day Country Music festival. His description of the barrage of shots was unbelievable is what he said. He had never experienced anything like that before. And he put himself in harms way. Reporter vinny started tending to the injured. When the shooting occurred that you know, it was all about helping other people. So when my brother went out to help other folks, she didnt run out of there, she came back and helped other people as well. So thats when they got separated, and from there, we dont really know what happened. Reporter stacee didnt have her id or cell phone. The realization she wasnt safe ticked up. It was almost impossible to find a good solid list of what we call jane does. We circled around, circled around, then we just had the sixth sense that the last stop was the coroners office, and thats where we found her. Reporter now, in about an hour and a half, two hours, thats when the memorial will start here in novato for stacy. Now were learning another shooting victim from san ramon. Denise coen, also went to the same school, graduated in 77. Flowers for the two women were placed outside a memorial to cal high alum this afternoon. A woman who grew up in san jose is also among those who were killed. 32yearold michelle vo graduated from Independence High School in 2003. She used to work for a Software Company in the bay area. Today, we spoke to her former boss who was still in shock. The hard part is kind of trying to tackle how she was taken from us. To go from being as exhuberent to silent. Also hearing a lot of stories of heroism tonight amid the deadly attack. A couple from Sonoma County helped victims get to a hospital. It was trauma and horror. There was no, i mean, it was just terror. Reporter Jennifer Mcgrath says the videos youve seen of las vegas dont come close to what it was like to be there. You see people scared, but they dont show the horror of it all. Reporter she experienced it firsthand, hitting the ground, and playing dead, while the shooter opened fire, and her husband administered cpr to a young woman next to her. The pop, pop, comes back, and we laid down next to her, and shes between me and my husband, and im just thinking, holy crap, hes going to get shot, or im going to get shot. Reporter jennifer says she and her husband laid with that young woman until the gunfire ceased. For her family, she can know we were there for the whole time. Reporter when they realized shed passed, they ran for their lives. I remember, there were people underneath the bleachers in the vip section, and they were pulling out dead bodies. Reporter next, a scramble to get victims to the hospital. There were some cars driving by. And we started pulling over cars, and shoving them in the back of cars. Just shoving them in the backseat and saying, go to the er. Reporter they survived. Jennifer says her 5yearold daughter, and 8yearold son were all she could think of as she laid waiting for the gunfire to stop. Now she gets to try to go back to normal. Im scared that when i hug them, im going to lose it, and theyre going to wonder, why are you crying momma . Im going to try not to, because i dont want them to feel the trauma.
