You were seeing as you were hearing the shots going off, you were hearing just them hit the ground. There was a guy in front of us that got shot in his back and he was still running. [ gunshots ] reporter bullets rained down from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort onto a musical festival of about 22,000 people. We had to cross the field where the people were getting shot. Every time we heard shots we would hit the ground and just stay there until they would stop for 30 or 45 seconds and then we would run as fast as we could. We just thought we were going to die. Theres no other thing. I thought the shooting would never end. Reporter Police Identified the suspect as 64yearold Stephen Paddock of mesquite, nevada, a Real Estate Investor and former accountant who enjoyed high stakes gambling. Investigators say he had 17 guns in his hotel room. The fbi can find no link to terrorism. Today authorities searched his home in a Retirement Community about 80 miles northeast of las vegas. Paddocks brother in florida was stunned. Theres not even anything i can say. I mean how do you i mean my brother did this. This is like it was done, you know, like he shot us. Reporter police say paddock killed himself before s. W. A. T. Teams stormed the hotel room. Investigators say he used two windows to shoot down into the crowd. This was an individual described as a lone wolf. I dont know how it could have been prevented if we didnt have any prior knowledge to this individual. Reporter and back out here live to the Las Vegas Strip where you can see the Police Presence and that street there is blocked off leading to mandalay bay, we told you earlier among those still missing is a bay area woman. She happens to be the wife of a San Francisco Police Officer and they were attending the concert and right now he is looking for her. His name is San Francisco Police Officer vinny echiber with his wife stacy. They were with another Police Officer and firefighter. He has spent the day going to all of the hospitals looking for her. They got separated when he told her to run to safety while he helped wounded victims. He told his wife, a mother of two, to run. She left her cell phone in the hotel and id with her husband and right now they are frantically looking for her or any word that she is okay. When we landed here to the airport, we noticed a lot of people from the bay area leaving to head back home and one of them was a woman who lived in brentwood. She is a mother and she tells me her story last night in the middle of all of the gunfire. Single shots like pop, pop. Reporter tony kessler of brentwood was in the middle of the chaos and barrage of gunfire. People are screaming ive been shot people are being drug out. My girl friend ended up in a vehicle that took them to the airport and they were running past she said she had ran past a girl laying on the ground in a pile of her blood all by herself. Reporter you ready to get home . Uhhuh. Reporter when the reality set in she wasnt hearing fireworks, she and her other friends ran for cover, but they all got separated from one another. It was just chaos. People literally shot around me, being drug out of the concert. We all got separated. My friends went one way. I went the other. We were climbing fences. People, shoes, purses, laying on the ground, people bloody. It was awful. Reporter and 59 people killed, 515 injured and a lot of people praying right now for those family members who have lost loved ones and at this house theres actually an interfaith prayer s g on in las vegas at the Guardian Angel cathedral which sits on the north end of the las vegas victim, a lot of people going there to say their strip, a lot of people going there to say their prayers and thoughts for those injured. There are hundreds in the hospitals right now, five local hospitals and Trauma Centers, where the doctors and nurses and physicians and triage are treating these, some critically injured. So whats so sad is that death toll may go up depending on how those in the hospital fare. Thats the latest here from las vegas. I can tell you from your staff coming here, this is a very different las vegas this evening, a lot of people mourning and rightly so. Back to you. Absolutely horrific. Juliette, you mentioned earlier there was security around the mandalay bay and concert venue, but are you noticing security stepped up around the area, around the airport and the strip . Reporter specifically inside the mandalay bay theres a perimeter set up and people staying there cant leave until theyve been questioned and investigators have gone in there. From our personal experience, we brought in all our camera gear and two marshals came up to his room to ask him what all he had in terms of his luggage with his tripod and camera, very specific. So weve never had that before. The airport screens all of our baggage but not specifically at the door of our hotel room. So theyre definitely checking to be on the safe side because apparently this suspect had 17 assault rifles carried into his hotel room when this deadly attack happened. Amazing nobody saw that. Thank you. Were hearing about a Bay Area College student who was hit by the gunfire in las vegas and right now shes in the icu. Kpix5 reporter emily turner has her dramatic story. Emily . The whole thing is just horrifying. Whether you were at this concert or not, if you were in las vegas or know someone who is there, its touched so many people and tone theyre all trying to make sense of what tonight theyre all trying to make sense of what happened. Paige is a student from folsom now recovering in a las vegas hospital. Her friends here say its hard to imagine. Its kind of like shocking and impossible for someone that we know personally going through that. Paige was set to graduate in may, works three jobs and still makes the deans list. She and six other College Friends were at last nights concert when shots rang out. [ gunshots ] her mother said she was hit in the right side while jason aldean was still on stage playing. Considering the death toll, shes one of the lucky ones. Shes alive and will heal. She has a liver laceration, fractured ribs from the bullet and 15 staples in the gunshot wound. Any messages you have for paige . That i love you very much and ill be here when you come back. Get better. Youre a kick butt woman, so see you soon. Reporter those who werent at the concert or made it out unscathed still felt the effects. It was chaos. It was awful, the worst night of my life. Were still just a few hundred people just running for their life. Reporter almost everyone arriving back in the bay area from las vegas this morning had a story to tell. In Andre Walters life it was a close call that may have saved his life. We had our threeday passes for jason aldean and im working here, so i said lets just stay home. One of my sons friend of a friend was killed last night there, too. The family all at home is pretty devastated. Even from all these tragic tales there is some good in the sense of heroism in this case with this Young College student. A Good Samaritan threw her in the back of the truck and took her to the hospital. Other Good Samaritans blocked her and her friends off so they didnt get trampled while people were running from that concert and that shooting. With more than 500 concertgoers wounded, las vegas hospitals were tested in unbelievable ways. You can imagine. A fleet of ambulances responded to the scene, but the wounded were also brought to area hospitals in personal vehicles. Doctors describe the surgeries as nonstop. There was a little bit of controlled chaos. Weve actually had a number of mass casualty incidents come through this Trauma Center but nothing in this magnitude. And in the chaos, of course, stories are emerging of off duty nurses, First Responders who risked their lives to treat the injured. Las vegas residents are rushing into help. People are waiting hours in long lines to give blood and the donations dont end in vegas. Were part of the network that resupplies United Blood Service in las vegas. So should they need more blood supplies well stand at the ready to help them out. It takes about 48 to 72 hours for blood to make it to the hospitals after we test it, prepare it and ship it. Its blood on the shelves that helps save lives. Call 888393give to make an appointment if you want to donate. President trump expressed his condolences for the las vegas victims. He and the first lady led a moment of silence at the white house this afternoon. Earlier the president addressed the nation calling the shooting an act of pure evil. Our unity cannot be shattered by evil. Our bonds cannot be broken by violence and though we feel such great anger at the senseless murder of our fellow citizens, it is our love that defines us today and always will. Forever. The president also commended First Responders for their quick action helping to save on so many lives. He hopes to come to las vegas wednesday. There are so many questions as to a possible motive. Why would somebody do this . With more on the investigation we want to bring in kpix5 security analyst jeff harp, the former no. 2 man at the fbi, San Francisco office. Jeff, take us behind the scenes of the investigation right now, so were several hours after the incident. This is what the fbi doing today . Well, ken, all Law Enforcement right now is working diligently and hard to try to figure out the why and what connections there are to this individual. Here we are again talking about another tragedy. This time its in america. My guess is that the bureau and Las Vegas Metro pd are dissecting every single piece of this individuals life that you can imagine. Jeff, the suspect, Stephen Paddock, had 17 weapons in the hotel room. A search of his home turned up another 18 firearms. Should this guy be on Law Enforcements radar because of that in nevada as opposed to california . Thats a good question. You think about firearm ownership. It doesnt itself mean you have a propensity for violence, but if you have a lot of guns and take them to a hotel room, thats a program. We dont have a country where bags are screened by metal detectors, so its not something that will be found in the hotel. You walk into the hotel with your bag, get help or you dont, and you go to your room. My guess is thats exactly what he did. Theyll be reviewing cc tv coverage and Everything Else to see if he had any help, what he was doing and how he prepared for this event. Jeff harp, thank you for that. Singer jake owens was on one of the stages at the route 91 Harvest Festival at the time. He spoke by phone on cbs this morning. I ran out. We were in the middle of it. When the shots were being fired and you could hear it ricocheting off the top of the roof on the stage, we started running just any direction we could because you didnt know where it was coming. You didnt know if someone was on the ground. We didnt know where it was coming from. At one point i was kind of sitting on the ground behind a car with about 20 other people crouched down behind the car and just the fear in everyones eyes but the feeling of everyone looking for someone to make sure they were okay was just ive never experienced anything like this before. Singer jason aldean was just beginning his set when the gunman began firing into the crowd. He and his crew ran off to the side. As you know, this is the season for San Franciscos big events and there are three big ones this weekend, a weekend that was probably going to bring hundreds of thousands of people like these here at oracle and thats why San Francisco in the wake of las vegas has told the cops no days off. Get ready to work. Heres the story. Oracle world hardly strictly bluegrass, fleet week, some of the citys biggest events are this week and with them thousands of people will fill into open streets across the city making for some very big potential targets. Were going to have heightened staffing levels. Youll see officers on bikes, motorbikes, in patrol cars, on foot. Reporter that was the case today at oracle world in downtown where some 60,000 conventioners gathered for the week long conference. In the wake of las vegas, its something that were prepared for. The police are out on the street doing everything from directing traffic to make sure the thing was safe. I saw internal security people at oracle. I cant give you all our tactics, but we are frommed for incidents like prepared for incidents like that. Weve had the active shooter in ups. Weve had other incidents, smaller ones which we are prepared for and train for. Reporter but is anyone prepared for a shooter in a Hotel High Rise . Whenever a situation like this happens, security in hotels and other places always take extra guard to make sure there are no copycats. Reporter as you can satisfactory here at oracle, over there see here at oracle, over there we have security with the dog and security all the way around, but police often have to be responders. What they need is our help as well. So everybody here, the message going out is if you see something suspicious, report it. If you see it, report it. Dont be afraid because thats the prevention that could save lives as well. In downtown San Francisco, phil matier, kpix5. Back to you. Phil, thank you. If you see something, say something.
