Have you found any indication at this point, insight into what that motive was . No, we have not. We have not located any items within the room or his house at this point. Any verbal command given yes, maam, a matter of normal practice. When we use a dynamic entry. Anything else that made you think the size and the number of weapons that made you think he had been there for a while. No, we have information hes been there since the 28th of september. So i have no idea whether he prevented the housekeepers from entering the room or not, thats just a matter of continued investigation. All right, thank you very much. Well provide you an update probably in the next two hours. Thank you. So that was Sheriff Joe Lombardo from las vegas, bringing us up to date. Here is what we know so far. Police in las vegas are telling us this, that a lone gunman is responsible for killing more than 50 people now, were told that 406 others were taken to hospitals. And the death toll is expected to climb. This is the deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History. That shooter targeted some 22,000 Country Music fans attending an outdoor festival led by jason aldean. Police Just Announced they believe the gunman killed himself before police entered his room on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort and casino across the street from the concert. The shooter is identified as 64yearold Stephen Paddock. Local police and federal agents are now searching thatal paddocks home in mesquite, nevada. Our suspect was identified as Stephen Craig paddock, 64 years old, a white male from mesquite, nevada. We have no investigative information or background associated with this individual that is derogatory. The only thing we can tell is he received a citation several years ago, and that citation was handled as a matter of normal practice in the court system. Some important things that i need to get out, the family reunification still is taking place here at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department headquarters. So any individuals that are looking for answers for their family members or friends are welcome to come here and we will provide that information as we get there. The fbi is vital in the assistance of this investigation as a matter of help, they are providing a 1800 number which is 1800callfbi. So the matter of the number is 18002255324. That number is to be utilized for any and all information, especially video information, or evidence that we can provide the fbi and they will be the housing of all of that critical information. John blackstone is near the scene of the shooting on the southern end of the las vegas strip. John, good morning. Reporter good morning, well, police now say that it appears that Stephen Paddock spent three days or so since september 28th in that room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel down there. This room overlooked an area where the concert was being held, threeday festival, Music Festival was being held just across the road on the las vegas strip. There was some 22,000 people there, listening to the concert, when paddock opened fire, shots started to come down on to that, people scrambled, tried to take cover as shots round after round and witnesses describe how there was a pause in the shooting, and then it would start up again as paddock apparently reloaded his weapon. Police say he had as many as eight weapons in that room, they found eight weapons in that room. He was heavily armed. Now, lets just get some idea of what witnesses were going through, what the people were going through there, talked to several people who described to us that terrifying evening here in las vegas. The shots just kept coming and so we were going down and when we got down, it was a man that was shot, right there, they were trying to take him out, he was all bloody and unconscious, and one of my friends was helping him out, and they got him out, and we ran and everybody is hiding everywhere, theyre hiding under the bleachers, the stanchions, and anywhere they could and everyone is telling us to run, run as fast as you can. They started shooting, everybody thought it was like fireworks or something at first and then people just start dropping around us and everybody tried to stay down and every time, like, a group would get up to try to run away, they would just start shooting again, and it just kept going on and on. It was absolute chaos. My friend kept complaining that something had happened to her and i felt her body and i didnt feel anything at first, and then we walked from the venue, had to hop a fence to get out of the venue, and once we did that, we got to where we were going and she kept complaining that something had happened to her, we felt her body and found a wound in her right shoulder, she had been hit. Reporter such a terrifying night in las vegas for so many people and it may get worse as they say the death toll is likely to rise with so many people in the hospital. And in critical condition. Police were also looking after this for marilou danley, described as paddocks wife. They have now located her outside the country, they say they dont believe she was involved in this. Some more details that he had in fact been in that rhotel roo since september 28th. Many people were taken to the nearest Trauma Center. Thats the University Medical center of southern nevada. Carter evans is outside of that hospital where hes joining us live. Carter, good morning. Reporter good morning, it is only about ten minutes from the mandalay bay, so it is pretty close, but we understand there were about 100 people who were transported here. 30 of them being treated inside that Trauma Center right now, several people, about a dozen in critical condition, you can see behind me police are here, right now the only people that theyre allowing into the hospital are employees, you have to show your i. D. , there have been people coming by to check on the condition of loved ones, theyre not allowing that right now. Theyre letting the doctors and nurses do what they need to do inside the hospital here. And this is not the only hospital in the area, the patients are coming to. As you heard, 400 total have been transported to area hospitals. Thats about four or five area hospitals handling all the patients right now, you can imagine how busy it was earlier, especially as one ambulance after another was arriving in here. Now, it seems they appear to have things under control, at least outside here, things appear to be calming down a little bit. Havent seen an ambulance come in for quite some time. We heard some harrowing stories about people who were in hiding, they were wounded, but in hiding for a long time, so there were people being transported well after this shooting. And not just in ambulances, as well. We also heard some stories of civilians who picked up injured people and put them in their cars and drove them to the nearest hospital. It was an amazing sight, im sure, as there were ambulances and private cars arriving, dropping patients off by the dozens. Quite a sight. Thank you, carter. Joining us on the phone now to talk about the treatment of the many victims is our own dr. David agus who joins us from california. We just heard carter say and the sheriff tell us earlier more than 400 people were taken to the hospital. How does a hospital deal with a situation like this when you have that volume all at the same time . There needs to be a Triage Program where you assess and you say which individuals are too sick, that is cant breathe on their own and probably arent going to make it, and who is very ill, but Immediate Intervention will benefit from that. Horrible decision to have to make, but you need to start to say, where can i use the men and women power i have to save people. Explain how hospitals rehearse for situations, terrible situations like this, how they prepare . Well, they go through the drills, where they do the triage and rapid treatment and so the triage is assessing. Is there an injury in the brain so that they will not be able to save this patient, even though they are doing some breathing now. Or is this patient, you know, of a situation where i can plug the wound and keep them stable until there is time to assess, or does this need to be immediately assessed and the patient will be okay. That triage is critical and knowing and it is a very difficult thing, obviously, some people you have to say, these are people who we are not going to be able to save, even though emergency room is empty, they would be able to save them. David, youre making a life and death decision in these cases. With seconds to spare. No question about it. And you have to start to grade people so that you can save the most people the most casualties and have the most people who make it through the event. It is a horrible position to be in. We know every second is critical. We heard from multiple eyewitnesses that it sounded as if there were eight, ten, 20 minutes before it seemed like the gunfire finally ended. How big of a setback was that to transporting victims to hospitals, that people were still waiting for the shooting to come to an end. Minutes are everything in these situations. Obviously the more you bleed, the more your Blood Pressure is down, the more you need Immediate Intervention like a transfusion. So when you get to the hospital, they can be tagged where there is red, yellow, green, and obviously black or gray. And so each of those tags tells them who they should Pay Attention to at that moment they arrive at the hospital. Very important point, the Las Vegas Police tweeted out the location where folks can go, if they want to donate blood this morning. Is there something you could say or would say to folks living in that immediate area . Well, this is critical. We saw in the 60 minutes story on congressman scalise last night, blood donations saved his life. Many of these patients, blood donations is the only thing that will get them to the next phase, which is hopefully to a stable phase. As much as you can, go in and donate blood today. Every citizen can donate blood today and hopefully reduce the number of casualties by doing so. We heard two reports of people who were wounded but had to hide out and couldnt seek treatment immediately. You touched on that a minute ago, where you said, listen, it is so important to get help right away. What about those people . The shape that they must be in now . Yes, so if there are any people out there, apply pressure. The more we can limit the bleeding, the better the outcome is going to be. Those people when they come in, there will be significant blood loss and right away they will be getting blood that is o negative. They dont know have enough time to type the patients. Especially if you are in that category, o negative, get in there right away. Everybody get in there, try to donate blood, it is critical. Of course, right now, the focus is on keeping these victims alive and recovered and treating them, but we already hear the mental wounds that these victims these 22,000 spectators at this event, they are witness to this mass carnage, talk about the months, weeks and years ahead for them, trying to recover from what they witnessed. I can only imagine. The post Traumatic Stress associated with what was going on here. This is war. These people at this concert were at war. Theyre all going to be significant manifestations, thats something that obviously after the event, the medical community will start to set up ways to deal with these individuals and figure out how to help them as much as possible. Right now, the focus is only one thing, which is saving lives. And we know that hospitals prepare and train for Something Like this, but when it happens, david, how prepared are you really for 400 people coming in to your place at one time, spread over different hospitals, of course. You arent even close. We go through drills all the time for earthquakes, for Mass Shootings et cetera. You dont imagine it is going to happen. You do the best you can, but there is trauma in every person, you know, in that er, the post Traumatic Stress is also the doctors and nurses and everybody. Theyre not used to dealing with this. They werent trained to being at war either. How do they cord natuordinat figure out which patient is going to what hospital . It is based on time. So the closest hospital, the ones who say, well, listen, i can save this patient very quickly if i get them there. Transfusion right away, stop that bleeding, et cetera. This person is less critically ill and can be transported 20 miles or whatever the next hospital is away. And so somebody that is at the ground there doing that central triage and key to saving lives. As we heard from carter, many eyewitnesses, it wasnt just ambulances, there werent enough ambulances to transport all of those wounded and who were struck. Private cars, im sure, taxicabs and anything available to take patients to hospitals was being utilized, how rare is that in an incident like this and does it cause any confusion upon ent entering the horosp . Araleit ste up. Heros are stepping up and getting people there, because minutes count in this situation. When youre bleeding, with a gunshot, you know, youre losing blood, if you get past a certain point, it is almost impossible to turn around. So the quicker you can get the patients in, to try to stop that bleeding and get them transfusions, the more lives youre going to save. So kudos to those stepping up and doing this. Yes, when you arrive at used to somebody getting off that ambulance, and explaining what is going on and giving all the vitals and saying what is happening, here, private citizens are bringing people in, there is nobody assessing that, obviously, in the car. Dr. David agus, joining us on the phone this morning, doctor, thank you so much for your time. Im sure well speak to you again before the day is complete here. Sheriff joe lombardo, clark county Sheriff Joe Lombardo said earlier they believe what happened in las vegas starting a little after 10 00 p. M. Last night was a lone wolf style attack. Jeff is in washington with an update on the investigation. And, jeff, we know that the shooter Stephen Paddock received some sort of citation within the last few years. And we also know that he was involved or feiled some sort of lawsuit against a hotel in las vegas. What else do we know about him . Well, we know about that citation, and that, you know, thats the type of runin with police were talking about earlier where there was nothing really major. We dont know specifically what type of citation that was, whether it was a parking ticket, something along those lines. But nothing to indicate he was on this path to carrying out a shooting of this magnitude. But investigators are gathering as much information as they can, as we know the fbi is assisting, theyre not leading this investigation, but they are assisting, and what they will be doing is gathering all the witness accounts that are handed over to him, gathering cell phone video, the sheriff there appealing for people to hand over cell phone video or still photographs that they may have, because the fbi has this massive database where they can put all this information together, which can then help paint a picture of what exactly happened, more complete picture, something that they developed, frankly, during the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, where they were able to quickly identify the two suspects in that case, because of all of the reams and vast amount of information they were able to gather and categorize and put together and thats how the fbi will be assisting, at least one of the ways, we know that there are other federal agencies specifically the atf working to trace these weapons, the sheriff saying there were at least ten weapons found in the room, the suspect took his own life, according to the sheriff, but now there will be a search on these weapons, trying to figure out where he got these weapons, when he purchased these weapons, because that too can help you figure out a motive in this case. Ten weapons, must have been in bags, would have been quite heavy, investigators will be looking into all of that and how he was able to transport that into the hotel room, jeff, thanks to you. Former Law Enforcement officer randy sutton served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department for almost 24 years. He retired with the rank of lieutenant and joins us from las vegas, randy, you know the city better than most of us. Talk about what we heard from the sheriff there, that he may have been using his wifes alias to book these hotel rooms, we do know he had a legal incident with one of the other hotel rooms. Could that explain why he may not have used his own identity in checking in . Well, it could be. I know theyre saying that she was not involved with this, you know, thats i think theyre probably going to have to delve into this with a lot more caution in order to cover all the bases, but the fact that this individual had that amount of firepower in that room indicates he didnt bring all that up in one trip. He certainly didnt have bell men bring that up. He being there for three days, he had the time to bring that up, probably in either luggage or a golf bag or something of that nature. So it is a little surprising that he could have hidden it well enough when the maid the maid service came in that they didnt see anything, but i think this is all part of the investigatory process, theyre going to have to really delve into. If he even allowed a maid in. Were waiting on all of this information to get more updates from police. But, can you talk a little bit more about the coordination between hotels and police in las vegas . Yes. There is a very good working relationship between the Hotel Security and metro. Many of the heads of security are former Law Enforcement, many with metro, there say very good working relationship that takes place. The security is, you know, the surveillance equipment that they have there is state of the art. And the people are trained very, very well there. When it comes down to the security itself, as i stated a little bit earlier, there has been a movement over the last 20 or so years to disarm these most of the security people. And now, you know, with an event like this, i think this is something that has to be revisited. There are Armed Security officers in there, but not to the extent that it used to be. I think that this is one of those one of those events which are going to have to people have to rethink a lot of the Security Apparatus in these hotels. And also the way that they coordinate. So what private Security Officers now are armed in vegas versus not . Well, each hotel, each hotel has their own security. So these are not outsourced. These are actual members of the hotel employees. So they are many of them are former Law Enforcement. But they are not they are not all armed. There are some that will be. But when it comes down to the security around the around the hotels and the casinos, they might have outsourced some of the outdoor security, but generally speaking they handle it in house. Randy, you served on the las vegas Police Department for close to 24 years. Im wondering if you talked to anyone who was still on the force and if youre hearing anything about what kind of weaponry was used and what kind of people can buy the weaponry that this man Stephen Paddock took to that hotel room. Well, one thing we know for sure is that these were fully automatic weapons. Now, whether they were ornl originally fully automatic weapons remain to be seen. Thats what the atf or experts in these investigations are going to have to determine. There are avenues to modify semiautomatic weapons which are easy to buy. To buy a semiautomatic weapon, you need merely to go in and purchase it. You dont have to have a sealed carry permit to buy them. You just cannot be a person convicted of a crime, you cant be mentally ill, which i think might play a role here. But anyone can go in and purchase a semiautomatic weapon. If you have the proper experience, there are kits available and there are gunsmiths that can actually alter that firearm and make it a fully automatic weapon. Have you talked to anyone on the las vegas Police Department since this happened . Ive talked to one person relative because, you know, one officer is dead, another is critically injured, so this becomes very personal to me. Yeah, what can you share with us about what theyre saying is happening there or happened there . Well, even though Law Enforcement transfer for events of all sorts, the carnage that took place tonight was something unequaled in the history of any of these officers. The personal feelings of these officers are put aside during these critical incidents. But they are human beings. Theyre men and women that have the same feelings as everyone else. When they are on the scene, they have to be stoic, they have to take care of business. But i can tell you this, that there is a great deal of Emotional Trauma that is associated with an event like this. Seeing this type of death and destruction cant help but have a serious effect on the Emotional Health and the Psychological Health of these officers. And many are going to require some and our thoughts of course are with those officers as well. Randy, thank you so much for joining us. Stay with us. This is a kpix5 morning update. Good morning, its 7 25. Im kenny choi. And im michelle griego. Starting today, jury selection begins in a San Francisco murder case thats fueled a National Debate on sanctuary cities. We are tracking delays along 880 in that southbound direction just south of lots of brake lights. 21 minute commute from 238 on towards highway 84, dakota ride, so give yourself extra time along that stretch. A new crash blocking at least one game, just under a 30 minute ride to the bay bridge toll plaza. Back over to you guys. Jacqueline thank you. We want to get back to special coverage from cbs this morning. Here, your 48th birthday trip, retired teacher, and you came with your best friend and he took three bullets to the chest as close as i am to you right now. True. It was hard. I saw him there, i wasnt going to leave him, we had to there was an emt there, somebody with an emt, awesome military, exmilitary people that were trained, so we got him compressed and thats, you know, kept compression on his chest. He actually put his finger in the hole, you know, so dont move your finger, we could keep the compression on and probably stayed like that for at least ten minutes, 15 minutes before finally made a decision we needed to get him over the fence to get him under the stage, so we knew we were safe dealing with him. You and three other guys had to physically haul him over a fence in order to get him under the stage and to a protected area. Yeah. Got him over and slid him under the stage and we were under there and another awesome lady came over, and helped compress and so there was multiple there was i am no hero, but there is tons of heroes out there that were there say lot of heroes out there. It is pretty astonishing to think you were physically plugging his Bullet Wounds with your fingers. Yeah. Rob, my friend rob, he had his finger in the hole, like, dont take it out. Were safe, but we were caught, my husband, mike and i were caught inside one of the little tents where they were selling things. And you can just hear them in the booth, we were caught in there with a metro officer who was amazing and then like three other people yelling, turn the lights off, turn the lights off, we were sitting ducks, you could hear the bullets coming closer and they were then quiet and reload and then start going again. And the girl that was standing behind me, about two feet, she got shot in the stomach. And everybody thought at first it was just firecrackers. And then everybody just couldnt just kept going more. Thanks for watching welcome back to cbs this morning. Were bringing you the continuous coverage of the deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History. At least 50 people have died in las vegas overnight, when a gunman high up in the mandalay bay resort on the 32nd floor fired hundreds of shots into the outdoor crowd at an outdoor concert. More than 400 other people have been taken to hospitals. We now believe the suspect, 64yearold Stephen Paddock, killed himself in his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. We do now have audio from the las vegas Police Department of the moments when officers reached paddocks room. We just hit on the suspects door, i need everybody in that hallway to be aware of it and get back, we need to pop this and see if we get any type of response from this guy to see if hes in here or if hes actually in there with anyone else. Copy all units on the 32nd floor swat has explosive breach. Everyone in the hallway needs to move back. All units move back. I have the floor. Under sheriff kevin c. Mcmayhill joins us on the phone. Thank you for joining us. As we just heard from that audio, as soon as police stormed the room, they knew the gunman had been dead and from selfinflicted wound, correct . Yes, you are correct. Can you talk more about what the police discovered in his room . There were ten long rifles, guns that were reported to be found . Yes. As we sit here today, right now, as we speak, we have just recently obtained the search warrant for the suspects room. We have made entry into the room. And we are now, of course, one of the things in these types of circumstances you have to watch out for is booby traps. Have to do a very slow and methodical in that room, i can confirm to you there are at least ten rifles, some sliding scopes that go with those rifles, a lot of other stuff in there, but premature for me to tell you what it is yet because i dont know either. But i can confirm to you that there are many extended rounds as well as rifles and ammunition in that room. Kevin, what can you tell us about the circumstances . Just listening to that audio i thought it was extremely dramatic. We have heard from other Law Enforcement officials that people were led to the room because they saw the muzzle flash. Other people say they were led to that room because the smoke detectors went off and it was creating a loud disturbance. Can you tell us what exactly led your team to that room . Yeah, i have not yet heard the piece on the smoke detector, but that certainly could be true. I do know that there were a number of officers that crossed the street at the event that was taking place, they were able to actually hear the rounds being fired as well as to look up and see that the suspect is firing from the particular 32nd floor of the mandalay bay. So a number of responding officers went over there immediately. There was a lot of confusion as you can imagine, so it took a little bit to get to that room. As soon as they were able to isolate that room, identify it, they did an immediate explosive breach on it, and went in and the man had shot himself. How many rounds do you believe the shooter got off . You know, i really dont know. I would have to guess it would have to be in the hundreds with the amount of people that both dead and wounded. Continue just about every hour that goes by we continue to get notified of individuals that selftransported to hospitals. Every one of our local area hospitals pretty much maxed out as far as the casualties and so we continue to look at that. I can tell you along with that, there were a number of police, fire, ems worked very well together here in this event. And they also had a number of civilians that were just picking people up in their vehicles and driving right over to the hospital and so you have a lot of that selfdispatching, transport to area hospitals as well. So the numbers are going to continue to fluctuate in the coming hours. And i think well be able to just late this afternoon have a better idea of the entirety of those dead and injured. Did he cut out the window in the hotel room, did he shoot it . What happened . I believe what ive been told at this point is he shot out through the window. That was how he was able to imagine his vantage point, what he was looking at specifically across las vegas boulevard, you know, open air environment, 23,000 people were packed in, enjoying a concert, before he unleashed his carnage. Do we know if he checked into the hotel under his name . We believe he did, yes. What can you tell us about your department . This is very traumatic, just as lay people watching it, we heard from the eyewitnesses, how traumatic and chaotic it was for them. We also learned that an officer has been killed. What can you tell us about your officers and listening to that very dramatic audio, how theyre doing, how theyre feeling right now. I know it is a job. I get that. You have to be stoic, but what are you all saying amongst yourselves . You know, to be very candid with you, we really havent had an opportunity to sit down with one another to pause long enough to figure out what it is we want to say to one another. But no doubt, you know, this is not something we take very lightly. What i can tell you from my own personal observation is that our officers acted very heroically in this particular event. They saved a lot of lives. They were able to get people out of the line of fire, get them behind a large block wall that was there, it will take a number of days to really for us to sort these things out and im not all that interested in that piece of it just yet. But im particularly interested in is, you know, keeping our thoughts and prayers with the victims and their families as the hours continue to come through. What have you been able to find from the mesquite residence, the Retirement Community where Stephen Paddock lived . What i can tell you about all state, local and federal systems have been checked and not found any derogatory information. In other words, they havent found anything that would indicate to us why he took the actions that he took. Obviously thats a huge part of this investigation and we need to determine what this guys motive was, what was his plan, how long he planned it, all those types of things. Im not aware, know were at the mesquite residence. Takes a little while to get up there from las vegas. About an hour drive. And so we have appropriate teams up there. As i mentioned, hopefully well discover a number of things that can help us answer some of these questions. We understand that this is a very fluid situation, but we do know this, that he was 64 years old, that he lived in a Retirement Community. So, kevin, you hear that, what did you make of that when you heard that piece of information about this suspect, who was now apparently committed suicide . It is just unbelievable. Really, none of it really makes sense. And, you know, things maybe we should have known, maybe could have caught, but no indication of that. 64yearold man goes on a homicidal rage, kills over 50 people, you know, you want to have the answers to those questions. Can we get those answers the best we can. But it just doesnt make any sense whatsoever. Is the Mandalay Bay Hotel being fully cooperative with investigators and what have they told you . What have you found out about his behavior . We know hes checked into the hotel since september 28th. Yeah. Mandalay bay has absolutely been very cooperative with us. We enjoy those relationships here in las vegas anyway. They have a number of cameras as you all know. We continue to go back through all that Video Evidence we possibly can and in a hurry here, trying to determine whether or not early on whether or not he was a lone actor or not. And so we had great level of participation, not only from the hotel casino industry, across the but all of our local Law Enforcement, police, fire and ems worked together really, really well, like i said before, we trained for this, it is still something you hope is never going to happen. It happened now and now we need to figure out why. You mentioned that you trained for it, but you certainly, i would imagine, dont think it is going to happen at a Country Music festival. Headlined by jason aldean. How are you processing that part of the story . Youre right. Listen, every as you well know, las vegas hosts a significant number of special events. Really almost not a day goes by that we dont have something large going on here in las vegas. We have a lot of experience with these types of events and in fact i wouldnt necessarily even call this event a large event for our city. But i can tell you that i dont know how you train for a man with automatic rifle fire from the 32nd floor of a casino that is firing down into a very large crowd across the street. So obviously you got to go back and but we got a long way to go on that and i just make that point, though, the citizens that were there, and the police that were there, they all worked very well together to save lives. Youre looking at live pictures now, kevin, as we speak on the air, our viewers are seeing pictures of that window that was apparently shot out, on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay casino, pictures coming in via helicopter. We know that you located now Stephen Paddocks wife, who was out of the country. Has she been able to give you any information . Not as yet. We are actively working to contact her, and we will continue to work at that and also whether there is other family members we can receive any information from and continuing the investigation. So just so i understand, you located her out of country, but havent spoken to her yet . What is the where do you think she is . We know where she is. Im just not prepared to share that information just yet. Well, we heard you say that he did use Stephen Paddock used his own i. D. To check into the hotel. There have been reports that he used his wifes i. D. For other things. Do you know how his wifes i. D. Was used in this particular story . The only thing im aware of any identification being used was that there was a gaming club, slot club, that she was used and he at one point was using that card to gamble with. So thats the only piece of identification evidence that im aware of that comes close to what youre asking. So hes been gambling in the past few days at the hotel. Yes. We know hes been gambling. Do we any if housekeeping entered his room throughout his stay . No, thats one of the questions that were trying to get answered. Obviously we want to know how he got the rifles up there. Well continue to look into that information as well. What is the next step in your investigation . We know this is a very big crime scene and you have a lot of people to interview. What are the next steps for your department now to start investigating this particular incident . Well, as you can imagine, as you alluded to, this is a very large crime scene, potentially upwards of 23,000 witnesses. And so were in the process, have been, interviewing hundreds and hundreds of victims. Setting up a hot line so people can provide video to us. Cell phone video, that type of stuff. But i think the biggest challenge for us right now is with the significant number of deceased as well as injured individuals, reconciling the families with those that are still living and, you know, a number of folks that are still currently in surgery, and so were trying to make sure that we have respect for the victims and the families and reunite with that. Meanwhile, we have a significant effort from an investigative standpoint, partnership with the fbi and local Law Enforcement here, continuing to go through and just take this well into the evening before werable to wrap up the various different crime scenes. Tourism and business events is a major part of the economy there, in the city. You talk about even 22,000 isnt the largest number for a crowd size that you cover there in las vegas. How prepared is the city Going Forward tomorrow where you still have concerts scheduled and you still have many people in Different Hotels there for different events . Yes, youre right. The next couple of days we have to make sure we have a sense of security here in the city. We mobilized 12 hour shift rosters so i have a significant number of officers available and well continue to work on that and not only add other local Law Enforcement stepped up to the plate there, but the fbi as well. Were fine when it comes to that. Well be prepared to for that to happen again. Is there any other information you can give us about the citation that Stephen Paddock received or any of his encounters or conversations with local police . I can confirm to you he received a citation. I actually didnt even ask what it was for. But when i was told about it, it doesnt have any impact on didnt leave any impact on the officer who issued that citation. I believe it was for speeding, is what im being told, but, you know, really didnt stick out in anybodys mind and even i cant recall, actually, what year he was given that. The word we heard from sheriff lombardo was no information was derogatory. Kudos to Sheriff Joe Lombardoat . Hes a local Law Enforcement guy who is all of a sudden put on a national stage. The sheriff, third year here, and as the sheriff, and elected to a fouryear term, and never one of those things in Law Enforcement that you ever want to be thrust on to the national stage, but i agree with you, the men and women in the organization served with great pride and great valor and, you know, really respect as the story continues to develop, i think youll be really impressed by the number of things that Law Enforcement did and the citizens as well to save lives out there. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said nobody is paid to do what were experiencing right now, you have to suffer and grieve, you lost as well in your community while protecting others who were at that concert. We appreciate your time, thank you so much, undersheriff kevin c. Mcmahil, thank you. Thank you very much. Cbs News Senior National security analyst Fran Townsend and Law Enforcement paul vialos are here, theyll join us to continue the discussion, but, first, we do have news from the white house. President trump will speak in less than an hour in response to the shooting. He has already reacted on twitter. Margaret brennan is at the white house with the latest on that. Good morning. Good morning, President Trump will make his first remarks on this shooting at 10 30 a. M. Eastern time from the diplomatic room here at the white house. Now, President Trump has been shooting his words carefully this morning. He has been outspoken about the threat of international terrorism, but today the largest mass shooting in u. S. History is a domestic act. In that tweet, he sent this morning, he sent his warmest condolences. Said to those in las vegas, Vice President presence sending his prayers, thanking the First Responders there and calling this an act of senseless violence. We note president s counterterrorism Homeland Security adviser tom bossert is monitoring events from here and offered any kind of support needed to those state and local authorities but theyre emphasizing that is who son the le who is on the lead, on the ground. So far today we are seeing already condolences roll in from around the world, from the prime ministers of the uk and canada, offering their deep sorrow in the wake of such a death toll. Now more than 400 in the hospital, 50 there severely injured, and we know really, gayle, for any american president and a mass shooting becomes a matter of in many ways, not if, when, president obama used to say the events are far too predictable, particularly in reopening debates about gun control, about things like that. So when we hear from President Trump later today, his words will be scrutinized to see how does he take a position on this, does he touch on any of those issues of Mental Health gun control, or does he stay focused on the reaction and the response on the ground. Thank you very much, margaret. Well bring you the president s remarks live. Barack obama has tweeted this, michelle and i are praying for the victims in las vegas, our thoughts are with the families and everyone enduring another senseless tragedy as margaret alluded to. Were joined again by Fran Townsend and paul viaols. Hes been at the hotel since september 28th, and had been gambling using his wifes identification card. What does that say to you, fran . Look, i think there is a lot now we understand about look at the hotel he was in. He clearly wanted a line of sight, to have a good line of sight to that venue, he had to be up high and had to be on a certain floor, certain level and hallway to have a clear line of sight to get the most rounds off, it had to be up high. We know he had ten rifles, either how did he get those in . Not only will atf look at sort of how he bought them, how he obtained them, how did he obtain all of the clips and all of the magazines and ammunition, but how did he get it into the hotel . This is heavy. This is bulky. This is cant carry it all at one time . Presumably not. It is an arsenal. It is an arsenal. Thats exactly right. You have to believe that it is not possible that when he had all that ammunition and armament in the room, that housekeeping ever got in there, and so wasnt that a flag or shouldnt it have been a flag if he was there a couple of days and they couldnt get in there. What does it say to you, he was there since the 28th and gambling. Well planned. Transporting the firearms, especially long guns, those can get broken down in several pieces. They can also be placed inside luggage where you can put several lone guns in one piece of luggage. So the other part about the september 28th issue, again, speaks to the planning, but it also speaks to the fact there were multiple trips that went up, you know tork the room. I think it is going to be interesting when you look at the cctv, the Closedcircuit Television cameras in mandalay bay. Casinos have a plethora of cameras strategically placed throughout. Theyll him from the time he came in, to the actual time of the shooting. The questions were talking about, those are going to get answered later today if not tomorrow. And also about him. We hear he didnt have a real criminal record as they said. They think maybe a parking ticket, dont know that yet, but nothing really serious. What does it say this is may be his first serious encounter with Law Enforcement and it is something of this magnitude . I can tell you what is going to happen is were going see when they break this down from the behavioral side this is not an isolated thing. What do you mean . I mean his neighbors knew about it, his friends knew about it, remember the shooting in d. C. , tragic shooting in d. C. , the one knew what . The one thing we learned about that shooter when they went to the neighbors was how disdain he had towards politicians. Congressional shooting youre talking about. Exactly. We look at this later on, were going to find out more about what he knew and what he was sharing with neighbors and friends. Not just, you know, from the electronics side and the computer side, but the things that he had voiced, his opinion of certain things, thats really going to paint the picture, will create a mosaic as to the mens rea in this particular case. You said during the break you were surprised how forth coming the Sheriffs Department has been given the pressers and availability to media in providing them with details, usually not so transparent. Oftentimes Law Enforcement will want to hold details back because they havent conducted the hundreds of interview s they have to conduct here. I give him a lot of credit. For many of you, our coverage of the mass shooting in las vegas will continue right after your local news. Youre watching cbs this morning. Well be right back after the break. Mo people are dead more than 50 people dead and more than 200 people are injured. The gun fire broke out last night at the jason aldean concert near the mandalay bay. Witnesses say shots were fired from the 32nd floor of the hotel. They heard relentless automatic weapons fired. We heard the shots and i dont think anybody realized at first what was going on until we heard the second set of shots and everybody started running and im like because i was just getting back, i was like whats going on . So everybody ran behind like we had like a barrier, like a back bar area where we kept all of our storage and everybody started running back there and diving on the floor and we could just hear the shots and i dove behind a ladder and pulled a big speaker over myself. All i could think about was my kids and my boyfriend, you know. And just the shots started getting closer and im like this is real. Like this is really happening, and all of a sudden everybody started getting up and they were running out the back and, you know, everybody was cool. Everyone was kind of in a single file line, being calm but once we got out the back , we started seeing people that were shot and the people that were dead and thats when it hit me that this was real. Here, your 48th birthday trip, youre a retired teacher and you came with a best friend and he took three bullets to the chest as close as i am to you right now. True it was hard. I saw him there, i wasnt going to leave him. We had, you know, there was an emt, somebody was an emt, there was lots of awesome military, exmilitary people that were trained, so we got him compressed and thats kept compression on his chest. He put his finger in the hole so we dont move your finger, we could keep the compression on and then probably stayed like that for at least ten minutes, 15 minutes, before finally made the decision we needed to get him over the fence to get him under the stage, at least we knew we were safe dealing with him. You and three other guys had to physically haul him over a fence in order to get him under the stage and to protected area. Yeah, got him over and slid him under the stage and we were under there and another awesome lady came over and helped compress and so there was multiple there was, you know, i am no hero, but there was tons of heroes out there that were there say lot of heroes out there. It is pretty astonishing to think that you guys were physically plugging his Bullet Wounds with your fingers. Yeah, rob, my friend rob, he had his finger in the hole, like, dont take it out. Were safe, but we were caught, my husband, mike and i were caught inside one of the little tents where they were selling things, and you could just hear the we were caught in there with a metro officer who was amazing, and like three other people, and yelling, everybody turn the lights off, turn the lights off, we were sitting ducks, you could hear the bullets coming closer and they were and would get quiet and they would reload and then start going again, and the girl that was standing right behind me, about two feet, she heard a shot in the stomach and everybody thought at first it was just firecrackers. And then everybody just couldnt just kept going more. Thanks for watching cbs this morning. Morning. Im annem at Stanford Health care, we can now use a blood sample to detect lung cancer.
