It teaches girls coding and robotics so theyll be able to meet the modern job market. Currently only 3 of latinas are represented in s. T. E. M. Fields across the country. And speaking to your hollywood experience, which also has its own problems with sexism and discrimination, you talked about how people often put women in boxes. How would you encourage people here, women in Silicon Valley to not be defined by those kinds of boxes . If youre a woman in many countries, and then put on top of that, a minority, whether its religion or ethnicity or cultural, you have a double whammy of discrimination and so women have to work harder and women of color have to work harder but i think there are so many resources and opportunities for women that theyre not even aware of. Reporter mike and nancy still get emotional talking about the first wild horse they adopted 17 years ago. Everywhere we went, all around the fairgrounds, all around the ground, shed be looking at us. And it was just uncanny. It was like she picked us. Reporter it didnt take long for ruby to adjust to her new napa valley home and her new family. Theres this moment where all of the sudden you can just see them look at you and they go, thats what you want . Yeah, i can do that. And it gives me goosebumps and it happens. It does happen. I think that moment is so addictive, thats why people end up with too many. Reporter sure enough after ruby came more wild horses. Sparky, then benny, then piny, and finally don the wild burrow. This is one of the wildest horses ive ever met. You can tell right away hes intelligent. Wild horses have to be to survive on the range. They paid 125 to adopt ruby from this Holding Facility for wild horses in northeastern california, run by the bureau of land management. Apparently visits from humans are a popular distraction for the 300 mustangs held here. It didnt take long for this group of young geldings to surround us, apparently as curious about us as we were about them. Yet just a year ago they too ran terrified, chased by the thundering sound of helicopters in captivity like these wild horses we witnessed recently gathered in utah. Its a disturbing sight but the blm says rounding them up to control their numbers is necessary with no natural predators on the range. If a wild horse is left to over populate, its going to destroy the range land its on. Reporter hes with the Northern California district. Other users like permitted livestock have a place on the range and so does wildlife. Big game like elk and mule deer also have a place on the range. Our challenge is to provide rangeland resources for those various users and keep those resources healthy. The largest lobby on the other side is the ranch. Most are profitable. And the agency is looking at these public lands as a way for individuals and the government to make money. But horses arent really a profit making venture. Reporter the new administration is pushing for drastic measures. The interior departments proposed 2018 budget would allow euthanasia of tens of thousands of healthy wild horses. They have ignored directives from advocates from congress, from the National Academy of sciences for years to change their management strategy. And they never did. And theyve gotten themselves in to this big financial hole and because theyve done this, they now want to kill horses to get themselves out of a problem that they created and we oppose that. Reporter instead, the Humane Society is pushing for birth control. We dont think sterilization is the right answer but we think contraception is definitely the right answer. Reporter hes been leading the charge on that front. Its not going to be a cure all. There are going to be herds that are hard to get to. But our group as well as many other groups out there would really love to have the chance to go out and prove that we can get to these horses. Reporter but his efforts to use dart guns to inject mares has problems with other advocates who dont want the mustangs touched at all. How many people can actually adopt . Its a problem. Reporter back in napa, they dont see any easy solutions. Their funding has been cut. And most of the money is going to help the horses they have now in holding which means they can do less range management and less effort toward adoption which it becomes a bad spiral. All i know is these are our animals and i want as many people to know about them as possible because they are worth saving.
