Its a moment of grief, a very difficult time but its a time of hope when you see thousands and thousands of people, mostly young people, helping rescue crews full of energy. First responders from all over california are heading to mexico to help in any way they can. 57 searchandrescue specialists from Southern California will soon arrive in the quake zone. Many of them went to the Haiti Earthquake so they have an idea of what they are in for. You separate emotions from work. And you know youre there to help people and if emotions get caught up, youre not focused on the job at hand. Mexicos president says efforts are under way to help those left without homes but the priority is saving lives. [ noise ] puerto rico was hit yesterday by maria and e territory is still getting hit with heavy rain and flooding. Parts of puerto rico could get up to 25 inches of rain with mudslides a major threat. The governor has imposed a 6 to 6 curfew. But reporter Chris Martinez is live in mexico city and tells us there is hope thutrothe region as survivors continue to be pulled from the wreckage. Chris. Reporter michelle, we are hearing more and more of though stories from throughout the region as rescuers are finding survivors. Right now you can see a whole group of police just showed up. They are part of the effort. It used to be an Office Building that was leveled. They have been searching since tuesday for survivors. Scenes like this unfolding all throughout this area. A little girl is alive but still stuck unruthde bbe ofle u mexico city. She has been wiggling her fingers in response to calls from rescuers. All day and night, crews have been trying to reach her and any other students who may still be alive. [ speaking spanish ] reporter this rescuer telling a reporter that special cameras they are using indicate there are at least two other children still inside. Officials say throughout the area, more than 50 people have been rescued alive from the rubble left behind. This woman was pulled through a hole in a ceiling more than 24 hours after the quake hit. This man was removed on a stretcher after being trapped inside his building within the bottom two floors pancaked. Kathryn ramos of san jose sent us these pictures from puerto rico that was sent to her by a cousin. The island is still experiencing heavy rain and flood and it could get more than 2 feet of rain even though maria moved away from the island. For safety reasons the governor ca s hollfohelp t r the search andrescue teams, as well no power on the island. Its just devastated. When you say no power, we lost all our satellite imagery out of puerto rico as well so we had to depend on nasa and other satellites to try to move in and take a look at the good eye wall centered around this beast of a hurricane. And there you have our latest image right there. Look at the eye become more well defined as maria ventures out over the warm waters. I got to tell you, those warm waters will fuel this hurricane again. The winds at 115 miles an hour going to the turks caicos. And then southeast bahamas by tonight and friday. But i got to tell you, the tracking models are only good for 2 to 3 days out. So while at this particular time it doesnt look like maria is going to be a threat towards the u. S. Nd, it certainly inll be meandering off the easta coast by this weekend and well have to see where it makes landfall. It will cause heavy rains around massachusetts and all the way back through portions of the midatlantic.
