Floridas gulf coast. Plus, the firing of james comey, called the biggest mistake in modern political history. What you did not see in the interview on last nights 60 minutes. Now, a look at todays eye this is truly an eye wall, full force of force. Tropical storm irma marches through florida. Were still getting heavy conditions here. Even though irmas now downgraded to a Tropical Storm, dont sort of let your guard down. Irma has spared virtually no one. There is flooding and extensive Property Damage but it will take days to understand the full impact. Now is not the time to return just yet. Theyve got a big cleanup effort under way. President trump has approved a major disaster declaration for the entire state of florida. This is a big monster. I think were very well coordinated. September 11th, 16 years later. We remember what happened to the families who continue to grieve to this day. Someone said you described the firing of james comey as the biggest mistake in political history. That would be too bombastic for even me but maybe modern political history. J. J. Watt who has been at the center of the recovery efforts. It is the sports story of 2017. Watts. Listen to the roar. While carrying the texas flag. On cbs this morning. Rafal nadal. A very sweet 16th major title. The hurricane, im sorry for all the victims and just keep going for everybody. Its very sad moment for our world but its a moment to be strong and to fight to be back. This mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Lets go places. Welcome to cbs this morning. As you wake up in the west, Hurricane Irma has weakened to a drop ka storm. The extreme weather has lashed nearly every part of florida. Irmas center passed overnight between tampa and orlando. It is blamed for the worst storm surge flooding ever recorded in jacksonville and there are more than 6 million homes and businesses across the state without electricity. Irma is now dumping huge amounts of rain in alabama, georgia and South Carolina. Its moving toward the georgia border with top winds of 70 Miles Per Hour. Were hearing some Amazing Stories from people who were caught in the storm. We have about a dozen of our correspondents stationed all over the state. Weve managed to get to hardhit eye lans in the florida keys and a long the gulf coast but well begin our coverage with jeff glor in st. Pete beach near the mouth of tampa bay, jeff, good morning, its still blowing wind there. Yeah, the wind is still pretty fierce even though the rain has tapered off in st. Pete beach. This Barrier Island that weve been on across the states, threats remain as Damage Assessment is under way. Overnight irma continued its march north. A significant rise in water. Bringing torrential rain and Hurricane Force winds further inland. This morning in jacksonville, this region is seeing some of the storms worst. With water inundating parts of the city. We have very serious significant river flooding along the banks of the st. Johns river. Its bad now. Its going to continue to get worse. Reporter further south, parts of Daytona Beach also looked to be under water. This video shot only hours ago showed irmas winds knocking the power in downtown daytona offline. Across the state, Police Rushed to help anyone they could. Overnight in Orange County, the National Guard along with local rescue crews helped evacuate 30 people from their homes after six feet of water rushed into their neighborhood. The storm ripped the southwestern gulf coast. Marco island, naples and ft. Myers for the brunt. In the southeast, miami was drenched with water. Despite avoiding a direct hit from irma. This morn, much of the florida keys remain cut off from the mainland. Police have been unable to assess damage. Irma knocked out power to much of this island chain. But relief is already under way. We dont have a comprehensive insight into what the damage is. I dont have any numbers on potential injuries. We will work on those things tomorrow at first light. Reporter make no mistake, irma still presents dangers this morning. Jacksonville is under a flash flood emergency at this hour. The st. John river which runs through the citys overflowing its banks. City Officials Sayer there handling one 911 call every minute and conditions will only get worse. Theresa is driving along coast in Atlantic Beach just outside jacksonville and shes taking a look at the initial damage. We are in Atlantic Beach. We saw that a lot of the flooding was happening near the beach but wanted to get out near the neighborhoods to show you what it looks like. A lot of downed trees. Electrical crews trying to restore some thatch power. Were here on the corner of seminole and paul avenue. If you look down there, you can see the amount of flooding. This is because were near a creek. You can also see what appears to be a tree leaning. Im not sure if its on a home. Were going to keep riding just so you can get a sense of what its looking like in some of the neighborhoods outside of the beach area where we were. But it is still very windy. A lot of these palm trees have come down. A lot of the homes that are boarded up did so for good reason. Because they knew these winds were going to be as powerful as they are. We see some people outside right now. Maybe we can just get a sense of what theyre dealing with. Really quickly. Good morning. Were from cbs news. Did you guys get a lot of damage . Are you pretty much okay . Pretty much okay from these gentlemen right here. But again if you look down this road, there are tree bushes and limbs down. When we were on the main thoroughfare, the street lights are out. There were police on the streets trying to make sure i believe to keep people off the roads. Again, electrical crews out here because a lot of down trees and a lot of debris. We havent seen any significant damage as of oh, here we go, a tree right here thats down. Im not sure that jake will be able to get that through the window. But we see a lot of these split trees. These smaller trees. Were going to keep riding down. And then just kind of go out to left of the window so you can see some more of the damage. But more debris than anything. Were still waiting to hear back from the mayor to see where the worst of it is. Again, were just getting out here but we can even tell you from our hotel that pieces of the roof were starting to rip off. We saw street signs flying in the air. And it is dangerous. Its not necessarily what you want to be out in at this time. But well of course continue to keep you posted open what the conditions look like. We have a downed tree right here at the window. This is, again, were just getting a look at it for the first time. So this is what its looking like here in Atlantic Beach. Jeff. Thank you very much. The mayors of all these florida counties have a lot of work to do this morning. The mayor of Orange County, florida, tell us the effects of irma are far worse than were anticipated 24 hours ago. Dozens of rescues have taken place this morning in the orlando area. Adrianna diaz is on the worst side of orlando with the latest on whats happening there. This neighborhood is called orlo vista. There have been rescues all day. You can just see this boat that was brought in to rescue people. More than 100 people have been rescued from their homes because of floodwaters that were waist deep at the worst of it. Even a dog was rescued. A little puppy whose name we learned is buishy. The firefighters told us shed been left alone in her cage despite the floodwaters and was at risk of drowning. Her owner said he had left her with his family. Now, there is devastation beyond this location. And now were north from here. There is a giant sinkhole that opened up. That is blocking the entrance to a community. And the winds have died down a bit but every once in a while, we get a really strong gust. It is still dangerous outside. Last night, there was one fatality. A crash, a single vehicle crash, that occurred. Officials say it might be too early to know whether or not that was storm related. But the mayor of Orange County wants people to shelter in place. Its not over for Orange County. She wants people to stay inside, stay safe. And obey the curfew that lifts at 6 00 p. M. , jeff. Adrianna, thanks very much. Irmas core is moving towards tallahassee. It has been raining there in tall hassy all morning long. And don dahler is in downtown tallahassee. Whats latest where you are . Good morning, jeff. Well, were experiencing the Tropical Storm force winds right now but as you said the worst hasnt even gotten here yet. Weve seen some large tree limbs come crashing down. And the concern now is not storm surge. This city is 200 feet above sea level. The concern are these power lines. Weve seen some arcing with the transformers over there. Over 30,000 people in the city has already lost power and it hasnt gotten to be the windyist its going to be. Last year when the hurricane came through, twothirds of the city lost power. But this story is morphing into the story of americans once again stepping up to help each other. Some 22,000 utility workers from other states have massed, theyre going to come in to help establish power as soon as they can. As soon as its safe. There are National Guardsman from 11 states that are also staging to come in to try to help rescue and restore order. Jeff. Don, thanks very much. Were being told in many cases these Power Outages wont be restored for not days but weeks. Nora, back to you in new york. All right, jeff, thank you so much. Chief meteorologist jeff fisher of our cbs station wbz is here tracking the storms direction. The big issue for all those power crews who are going to try to work so hard in the days and weeks to come. Weve got a big wind field. Its not as intense as it was yesterday. The eye has spent some time over land. We saw the broad zone of Tropical Storm force winds. Thats Strong Enough to keep a lot of the crews to get the lights back on. You notice the rain now across the panhandle. The heaviest in georgia and South Carolina. Thats where our highest impact is. Strong winds and surge flooding an issue there. Latest, 70 mile per hour winds. Now a Tropical Storm. Traversing all of the atlantic. Its moving northnorthwest at 18. It will be moving farther inland. Those winds slowly coming down. Here you see the trek. Keep in mind, they get a little bit more lopsided as they move north. Along and north and east of that track is were going to have the strongest winds and the heaviest rain. Over a half foot in spots. As those bands come in, an isolated tornado possible. We are expecting record flooding from surge in savannah, georgia, around tybee island. And close to record levels in Charleston Hilton head area. A lot of those coastal communities still need to be watching this closely throughout the day. More than 6 Million People living in the miami metro area were spared from the storms full force. The city still suffered serious flooding and Hurricane Force winds caused at least two massive construction claims to collapse. Mark straussman is in downtown, miami. I know officials were very concerned about those cranes. Some of them as high as 900 feet tall. Good morning, concerned about a lot of things, including those cranes. And this street which you wouldnt recognize. Brickell avenue, major downtown miami street, unrecognizable. Some of the most major damage here is right in the heart of downtown miami. This symbol of miamis Economic Growth became one of the citys most highprofile storm victims sunday morning. A construction claim on top of a new 30story building snapped under winds nearing 100 Miles Per Hour. A little over an hour later, a second crane collapsed. A few miles north in the edgewater neighborhood where lincoln lives. These cranes that are 45, 50 stories up if they fall, they have the potential to go three or four blocks and everyone in that area should have been evacuated. A third crane up the coast in ft. Lauderdale crumpled in i irmas winds. They wont start a full assessment of the damage until later today. Elsewhere in miami, gusts ripped the roof off this building. Fire Officials Say no one was injured here either. The water from the bay has started to go inside the building. Miamis high end brickell neighborhood took the brunt of the hurricanes estimated 4 to 6 foot storm surge downtown. Ritzy brickell avenue bake bricereeeling these effects and the eye is, what, 200 mile also away. That is blowing my mind. On sunday, miami authorities had to contend with more than 800,000 households losing power in addition to flooded streets and toppleled trees. And Police Arrested at least 28 people for burglary and looting with numerous incidents caught on camera. And now that its day break, people are getting a sense of just how much damage irma left behind. In so many cases, of course, it is significant. I want to give you a shot of one of those construction cranes we have talked about. This is a daylight view of it. As you can see, it definitely needs some work. There were 25 cranes in miami. 2 of them collapsed. Maybe its surprising more of them didnt collapse. Clearly these two need some work. Also an update about another major part of miami, which is Miami International airport. That is closed today. And will reopen tomorrow, charlie, bub wit with a limited flying schedule. Naples and nearby marco island registered the strongest wind during the storm. They topped out at 142 miles an hour. In Downtown Naples with a look at the damage. Jonathan, good morning. Good morning, charlie. Weve been traveling all morning long. We wanted to stop along fifth avenue to show you the cleanup effort. Just moments ago, we saw plows come through to carry off all of the palm trees that were downed during those high winds. Its trees like this. That are really hampering this recovery effort. Irma made its second florida landfall in marco island as a category 3 hurricane. But it reached naples with a terrifying force. The Naples Municipal Airport recorded a wind gust of 142 Miles Per Hour. The highest reported in the state. This drone footage shows the extensive damage. Streets submerged. Buildings torn apart. Neighborhoods littered with debris. A roof completely ripped off. Its already pretty full. She rode out the hurricane cuddled in her closet. This type arouime around, she t shelter at a Naples Country Club as the dangerous eye wall passed. Trees were torn in half. Power lines ripped down. The naples storm surge feared to be one of most dangerous peaked at just over 7 feet, just half what was forecast for this area. It still caused devastating flooding for the lowlying homes and businesses along the coast. And many of them on marco island where we were earlier this morning. Police say the surge was so strong it actually lifted up some of their cars. As you can imagine at this point, that island cleaning up. Right now, it is still closed off to the public. Gayle. Thank you very much, we are hearing from south florida that some people who stayed behind in coral gable, thats a miami suburb, are now unable to get out of town. Reporter this is a r residential street in coral gables. You can see all the trees and the tree branchs that are down. In fact, as far as the eye can see here. Its hard to tell this is even a street. If it werent for the homes that are right here. Miamidade county telling us that they are getting reports of debris on the roads throughout the county. They have crews right now trying to clear some of this debris. But theyre going to have to hit the main highways first and get those cleared. The reason is they want to get power crews and First Responders into some of the affected areas. So some of these areas may have debris for 2 to 3 days while they try to get all the streets cleared. This is indicative of what people are dealing with this morning all up and down florida and into other states as irma moves in. Nora. All right, manuel, thank you. This morning, emergency teams are checking on people in the florida keys who didnt evacuate when the hurricane hit. Irma has tossed boats on to the roads and covered streets with hi hi clouds out there this morning. It looks like our high clouds will stick around through most of the day. South of us a low pressure system brought a lot of lightning strikes to monterey, Santa Barbara and it will move up towards our area bringing us a chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight through tomorrow and look at the big dip in the temperatures. The storm system was so strong that it caused the water to just disappear in both sarasota bay and further up the coast in tampa bay. Carter evans is in sarasota with how this rare weather phenomenon happened. Carter, good morning. Reporter good morning. As the sun peeks out from behind the clouds, sarasota bay is filled to the brim again. All of this water came back after the center of the storm passed over. But yesterday it was a very different scene up and down the coast. For floridians used to living along the coast, irma provided an unusual sight sunday, a dry shoreline. Ive never seen it empty like this before. Ive seen it flooded plenty of times. Ive never seen nothing like this. Reporter water ways receded as this storm picked up steam. The force of the approaching hurricane is so strong that its actually sucked a lot of the water out of sarasota bay. It was a similar picture across the region, thanks to a mix of irmas fierce counterclock wise winds and low atmospheric pressure. So this is happening because the winds are pushing the water away from these bays as the storm is passing. As the storm passes to the north, the winds shift and they push all the water back into the bays. Normally the water is up to the step. Reporter robert had to check out the scene for himself in sarasota. Ive never seen the grass. Ive never seen any of that before. I just was surprised. Reporter the tide was so low two manetees become rested in the sludge and had to be rescued. And theyre worried about venturing out on the sea floor. Exit. Reporter since the water could return at any moment. Its not like a tsunami that would be where the water gets sucked in and comes back as a big wall, this gradually rises up, rather quickly, though. Reporter high tide passed a couple hours ago and the water is actually beginning to recede. So when it comes to the storm surge, it appears the worst of it may be behind us. Theres still lots of work ahead, though. You see that Police Barricade down there. The Barrier Island behind it has been evacuated. And theres still turning cars around. As for the cleanup, well, theyre still assessing all the damage and there is going to be a lot to be done. Carter, thank you so much. Were getting an up close view of irmas power from thousands of feet in the air, ahead, new dramatic images as the plane flies into the eye of the hurricane. Well talk about that more and hear from rick scott. But first, this is hours eye opener. Irma has weakened to the Tropical Storm. But its lashed nearly every part of florida. The wind is pretty fierce across the states. Threats remain as Damage Assessment is under way. We have seen a lot of downed trees, power lines, it is dangerous. Its not necessarily what you want to be out in. More than 100 people have been rescued from their homes because of floodwaters that were waist deep at the worst of it. We have a big wind, its not as intense as yesterday, and we saw the big broad zone of Tropical Storm force winds. We are experiencing the winds right now. The worst hasnt gotten here yet. This tree was knocked down during irma. In fact, some of the most major damage here is right in the heart of downtown miami. Trees as far as the eye can see here. Its hard to tell this is even a street. If it werent for the homes that are right here. Wherever Hurricane Irma goes well be there first. Well be there with resources and support, both to save lives and to help to recover and rebuild these states and these communities. Im charlie rose with gayle king and norah odonnell. Irma is not finished with the rampage through florida, although it has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm. It has sustained winds of 65 Miles Per Hour. And is still causing severe flooding. Jacksonville faces record breaking flooding after at least 15 inches of rain. More than 6 million homes and businesses in the state are without power. This morning, rain bands stretch all the way to tennessee and North Carolina. The storm is expected to bring Tropical Storm force winds to much of the deep south. Hartsfield Jackson Airport has canceled more than 900 flights today and shut down bus and Train Service because of irma. Some parts of florida that saw irma overnight are under siege. Elaine duke said 200,000 people are in shelters and jeff glor is in st. Pete beach along the tampa bay. Good morning. Reporter winds remain consistent although its largely tapered off. Surf still going pretty strong in the gulf behind us. About two miles from here in st. Pete 113 foot long dinner cruise yacht smashed into a bridge. That is one of the bridges that connects the main land to this Barrier Island that we have been on. One of two bridges. We passed over it yesterday. The Sheriffs Office said that bridge is now closed until further notice. Pinellas county had wind gusts up to 90 Miles Per Hour and 70 of those in Pinellas County do not have power. At least 41 sections do not have working traffic lights. Minutes ago police in jacksonville told police in some evacuation zones that its time to leave. That rika duncan is outside Atlantic Beach and a half mile from the ocean. Theres still water there. Reporter thats right. This is barrier aland and now not only are we seeing a number of the neighborhoods flooded by water because of the creeks and ponds but we are seeing a lot of debris. This street has been blocked off by debris that has fallen because of the storm. You see some neighbors have put ome of the cones out to pret people from driving down this street. Now, again were in Atlantic Beach which is east of jacksonville which also received record storm surge. In fact, the last time they received as much storm surge was in 1964 due to hurricane dora. Whats happening right now is police have allowed people to access those bridges out of Atlantic Beach but they are not letting folks get on this beach. Theyre expecting the storm surge to increase. Thats because we have not even reached high tide yet. That happens in about an hour and a half. Jeff . All right, jericka, thank you very much. You might not have expected Serious Problems in orlando but dozens of rescues have been made this morning and they have been under way all morning long. Adriana diaz, whats the latest . Jeff, we are still here at or low beach and they have cut down to do not cross line they had up. Take a look. This road looks like a river because there was flooding here last night that was waist deep at its worst. The National Guard was here. The fire and rescue from Orange County was here. They brought in their boats, rescued people by boat. More than a hundred people, they pulled out of their houses for hours this morning. Even some dogs we saw them take out of here and its not just this area that is that has been damaged. Theres destruction about an hour north of here. There is a community where the entrance has been blocked by a sinkhole that opened up just in front of it. So these are really dangerous conditions. The sun has finally come out here in the orlando area. But the mayor is saying, still stay indoors. Theres a 6 00 p. M. Curfew here. They dont want people out on the streets. A lot of the injuries that up what that are hurricane related actually happened after the hurricane. When people come out and try to clean out, they may come in contact with live power lines that have been downed. They may be hurt with equipment like chain saws were told as theyre trying to clean up and break down branches so they want people inside off the roads and we have just heard that there have been at least 11 arrests for people who have broken the 6 00 p. M. Curfew. Jeff . Adriana, youre right. Dangers remain after the storm passes, whether its exposed wires, whether its fragile trees. Or Something Else so there is caution about that this morning. Charlie, back to you in new york. Jeff, thanks. As irma pushes north it is bringing dangerous wind and rain with it. Chief meteorologist eric fisher of our cbs station wbz is tracking irmas path and the storm surge thats major threat. Good morning. Good morning, charlie. That surge very much a threat as we head through the course of the day today as it moves further north up along the coastline. Yesterday was the statistical peak of Hurricane Season and Mother Nature reminded us of that. 60 Miles Per Hour winds and thats Tropical Storm force. And its 150 miles across so thats a big issue for the crews restoring power. Not able to get to work in many locations. Mostly strongest impacts reason on the north and eastern side of the line. Cross into South Carolina, that will be the high impact zone today. I want to more about that storm surge and what caught peoples attention yesterday was the fact that the water really ran out. The off shore winds especially in the gulf allows that water to move on, but now its being piled up. This is a look at savannah, georgia. We saw that record flooding in jacksonville. Record flooding is expected in savannah. The high tide is after noon and certainly theres going to be significant surge flooding there as well as hilton head and up to charleston where theyre in flood stage. Thats a city thats very vulnerable to coastal flooding. You can see the kinds counterclockwise, still around the big bend and down to tampa, but not as strong as georgia and South Carolina. I think thats the biggest story over the next few hours. Thats well said, eric, thank you so much. We spoke to Florida Governor rick scott earlier this morning as made his way to the keys to survey the damage and we asked him about the concerns for the people still trapped in their homes on the island chain. Well, well find out. We have search and rescue teams going down there. We have got them going to jacksonville, you know, the storm is still in our state. We are seeing flooding and storm surge in the northeast florida area. I hope everyone continues to pray for our state. Well assess all the keys and were continuing to make sure that everybody survives this. And were you know, we have a great support from the president. I talked with him three times yesterday. I talked to the administrator of fema all day yesterday and i have been reaching out and learning more from our sheriffs. Our First Responders around. And we clearly have and weve got a lot of power out. And i want everyone to think about staying safe. We have a lot of downed power lines, we have a lot of closed roads. Our Power Companies are getting the power back on. Our Transportation Department is cleaning the roads. I know the locals are doing the same thing. The president is providing he reese going to provide every bit of support that we need. Were all going to work to keep everybody alive and get everybody back to normal as quickly as possible and we have a lot of our damage in our state. Whats the most important thing you want people to know right now and whats at the top of your to do list . Well, the big thing is the keys, to find out exactly what they need. I have been talking to individuals down in the keys. I want to make sure that anybody who needs to be rescued, whether its in the keys or anybody else in the state we dont spare one expense to save everyone in this state. Were sending in rescue teams that were in the jacksonville area because we know were getting flooding there. But the big thing is keep everybody alive and then everybody has got to take their time. This is a very tough time because youre going to be out of power for a while. Our roads are not clear yet. And we have a lot of downed power lines. I want everybody to remember, stay safe. Governor, how long will it take to get the power back up . Well find out today as the crews go out. We prepositioned assets. We have over 22,000 individuals coming to our state to help repair our utilities. I talked to the biggest Utility Company in the state. They had lots of trucks out, they already propositioned them in the ft. Lauderdale area. They are getting them out. All across the state now as fast as they can. Well provide Law Enforcement escorts to the vehicles out there, so were going to do everything we can to get the power back as quick as possible. Can you drive to key west . We right now, we need our assess, we have teams going from key west north to south to make sure all the bridges are good. We have, you know, we have 56 bridges, we have to make sure every bridge is safe and passable. Were also working to get our ports open so we can get the fuel back into the state. As you know, were struggling to keep enough fuel in this state for our citizens so weve got our fuel in our big in ft. Tampa bay and lauderdale, but we need to get the tankers in here as fast as we can. Our thanks to rick scott. Tens of thousands of people are adjusting to life inside shelters. Another big story were covering Tropical Stormer ma remains dangerous as it pushes across north florida toward georgia. Its causing severe flooding in the orlando and jacksonville areas. More than 6 million are without power. Were seeing our first pictures of the damage in some hard to reach communities. Florida keys face what one official called a humanitarian crisis. Irma made landfall there with 130 Miles Per Hour winds. Elaine is in key largo. Good morning. Were in a neighborhood in key largo that sits on the water. When the storm surge came, it pushed debris all across this neighborhood. Here you see some piles of wood. Difficult to see here but rebar that has been bent over as the force of the water as it came. Upanddown the street, you can see its littered with twisted metal, pipes, with furniture, with trash cans, with downed trees. All of it as a result of Hurricane Irma. Residents here have just begun the process of coming in and taking a look and surveying their homes to see what kind of damage there is all upanddown, though, the florida keys. It will be a long recovery process. I can tell you from driving around, we saw items in the middle of the road, in the middle of the median that are normally not there. Like boats, refrigerators, coolers. We should tell you that the military plans on having c 130 c car cargo planes come to and bring things necessary for the disaster victims in the area. Also, Florida Governor rick scott plans to survey the damage in the keys from the air. Is expected to do it later today. Elaine, thanks. Fema has mobilized this morning to respond to Hurricane Irma. The agency delivered 2. 4 million meals and nearly 1. 5 million liters of water to florida. The agency is making similar preparations in alabama and georgia, which are also in irmas path. The administrative brock long is with us from femas National ResponseCoordination Center in washington. Good morning. Good morning. How are you . Thank you for doing this this morning. Look at this damage so far and put it in terms of how devastation how bad is the devastation, as you see it, and how it might have been much worse. Give us the context. Yep. So clearly the event is not over. In some cases, the backside of the storm, the east side of the storm is pushing water into parts of jacksonville, florida and up the coast of georgia and South Carolina today. Were also anticipating a lot of inland rainfall in georgia. So the event is not over. But overnight, as we, you know, work with our state and local partners to conduct assessments. Monroe county and the keys, Collier County took the brunt of the hit with the storm surge that was there. How many people do you have in shelters in the state of florida . The last i checked well over 200,000. Its hard for me to keep up with all the numbers right now because its a moving target. But it was over 200,000, i believe, we have nearly 6 million without power, as we anticipated. So its going to be a long, frustrating event for floridians. I know Everybody Needs to pack their patience, brock. The back to back disasters. First harvey. Now irma. And now jose waiting on deck. How much is it straining your financial and physical resources of your team . So regarding the finances, the communication line is with the congress, white house, and Homeland Security are strong. Theyre going to continue to give us the enduring authority to push forward on the money front. Regarding staffing and resources, obviously too big events like this staff is, you know, Staffing Resources are strained. But we have great contingency plans in place with our department of defense friends and, you know, well standby and ready to support other disasters as they come. And while were focussed on florida, lets dont forget our friends in the Virgin Islands and puerto rico, as well. Were still, you know, managing complex missions out there. You had a teleconference with the Vice President , president , and other officials. Is it fair to say the federal government is standing by to do what is necessary . Absolutely. The president and the Vice President have been fully engaged. The Vice President spent nearly two hours with us yesterday here at the National ResponseCoordination Center. Ill be briefing the president directly later this morning. And were in great communication with governor scott. I talked to him probably twice daily to make sure that we understand his operational priorities and how best to support them. Can you put a price tag on this . How much is it going to cost . Not yet. Not yet. Its really hard to do. And the way this works, is that well be granting money to help, you know, help florida and other states ref states recover for many years. Its not just only the response money but, you know, assistance for fema will come in the form of post Disaster Mitigation pound funding to rebuild facilities so what was knocked out this time isnt knocked out next time. Fema started a rumor control website to combat misinformation and scams spreads about fema. In other words that flood waters can spread plague. How important to get the right information out . Well, you know what i would encourage citizens is to first listen to the local officials for the most accurate news. Again, fema is not a first responder. You know, our role is to support state and local partners, and its important for us to build a clear and consistent message with those partners all the way through. So we have multiple televisions a day. Trying to identify what rumors may exist and how to combat them and put them out. Go ahead. This is a thing about you, brock. I enjoy watching interviews with you because youre always seemingly so confident, so calm, nd very much in control. So what concerns you most, as you sit here battling two hurricanes and another one on deck . Well, thats a tough question, because i really think that we have a long way to go to create a true culture of preparedness within our citizen i are in america. No one is immune to disaster. We have a long way to go to get people to understand the hazards based on where they dwell, where they work, and how to be prepared financially. How to be prepared through insurance, continuity of Operations Plans for their businesses so we can avoid the suffering and strife and loss of life. Its truly disappointing that people wont heed the warnings. Yeah. Administrator, you know, we were talking here about what bewitnessed because two category 4 storms in the same year. Apparently unprecedented the size of these. How much does Climate Change play a role in the natural diasters. Regardless of what causes the increase in disasters, i have to be prepared to handle the consequence management of it. And i think if we look back, i mean, i was open i knew coming into this job that the statistics and probably of being hit by a major hurricane were against us. The last time we had been hit was 2005 by wilma in south florida. I was addressing to the staff, listen, i know coming into this job were going to be hit by major hurricanes. It was like a one in 2,000 chance we went 11 years without a major hurricane. We have to be ready. The problem is we continue to build in vulnerability areas. We lack building codes, we lack, you know we continue to, you know, be our own worst enemy, in some cases. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. Yep. Thank you. And right now its time to show you the mornings headlines. Usa today reports that north korea is vowing the greatest pain for the United States if new sanctions pass. The u. N. Thats a good choice. Ahead well break down the numbers behind irma and meteorologist eric fisher where were seeing so many storms this year. First, a check of your l we did not see the marine layer come through the bay today a clear shot of the Golden Gate Bridge this morning. We only started seeing high clouds out there associated with the low off the coast that brought down thunderstorms in Central California moving towards the bay area cause our temperatures to feel a little cooler than yesterday. Chance of thunderstorms tonight through tomorrow night and a big dip in the temperatures by wednesday. Irma was the second major hurricane to hit the United States in less than three weeks. Chief meteorologist eric fisher of our cbs station wbz is here to break down irmas historic numbers. Eric, good morning. Good morning. And the storm not as intense as what we saw yesterday but it has a much larger wind feel. That will affect a broad area of the southeast. Its not just the storm, but the big area of High Pressure across the northeast. That change in pressure producing winds 450 miles across at Tropical Storm force. Tropical storm force is maybe not a major hurricane, but its still enough to cause a lot of issues. Bring down trees, cause Power Outages. Weve seen about 6 million of those already so far. So there you see the storm. Rain bands coming in across georgia, South Carolina. I want to show you the stats and the peak numbers from irma. Its a destructive Hurricane Force. Strongest gust in the United States 142 Miles Per Hour in naples at land fall yesterday. The first landfall in the keys between big pine and key west 10 to 14 feet. Were starting to get the big picture of the damage in the keys. The rain total over a foot in spots of florida from Central Florida toward the jacksonville area. It seems to be the band of the heaviest rainfall. There has been fresh water flooding with that so far. Impressive numbers on the board so far with irma. Weve had a couple of strektive hurricanes back to back. In terms of records. It had 185 Miles Per Hour winds peak intensity whard the leeward islands. 37 hours at 185 Miles Per Hour. Satellite record goes to 1966 thats the longest weve measured. It forms east of 35 west. What does it mean . It was by the islands that was far out. We havent had a hurricane strike the u. S. That started that far out since 1893. Hurricane 3. They didnt have names back then. And days since harvey . We have landfall 16 days ago. Major hurricanes within just over two weeks the last time that we had a major hurricane before the season was 2005, charlie. We went over 4,000 days. These are interesting questions. Weve got more, though. Come over to the dec and sit down with us and talk about it. Sure, no problem at all. Fire away as i walk over. Let me begin with this. Jose is in the atlantic. What is the direction . Its a bit of a Holding Pattern now. Its waiting for irma to unwind. Its going to drift between the bahamas and toward bermuda but in between the two next five to six days. Will try to move back in toward next weekend and early next week. We have a ways to watch it. Its to be unclear how the steering current is going to line up for a couple of days. We need irma to calm down and then well get a clear picture. I think North Carolina to new england is the spot to watch. And what about the question nora asked in terms of Climate Change and global warming. Is it a factor in what were seeing with these the number of hurricanes . Maybe not the number of hurricanes, but maybe the intensity of. There are some theories out there. M. I. T. Saying that there might be fewer hurricanes but the ones that form may be stronger. The reason for that the ocean temperatures. Weve seen water temperatures 1 to 2 degrees above average. That can add a little extra fuel to the fire. It doesnt cause hurricanes. Were in the peak of Hurricane Season. We expect them. In naming the top end of little bit higher over time. Weve had warm water for years and no hurricanes. M. I. T. As i said more harveytype hurricanes. Theres heavy rainfall. And might see heavier downpours and scattered about. We saw unprecedented numbers of rainfall. It is something that has our attention and especially the surge flooding. We know that plays have higher water than 1960 when donna came ashore. Thank you for inviting me over. I appreciate it. Come on over, eric. Thank you for having me. Thank you for the information. Any time. Youre watching cbs this morning. Well be right back.
