Heavy winds, rain, and surf will batter the north coast of the island all day. It will then turn north towards florida where more than 5. 5 million have been ordered to evacuate. Tony is fleeing key west. We are worried about the people we love who didnt get out. Reporter among the biggest concerns, storm surge. Think about it. 6 to 12 feet. That is taller than some homes and its going to rush in. You are not going to survive this. Reporter Mass Evacuations have turned freeways into parking lots. Lines at gas stations snake into the streets. Its estimated nearly a third of the pumps in floridas metropolitan areas are empty. Losing power after the storm is also a big concern in florida. One Utility Company estimates that about 9 Million People could be left in the dark for weeks. This is barbuda where Officials Say almost every building on the island was damaged, if not completely destroyed. Everybody will tell you the same thing. Everyone is in the same situation. Nobody can help one another. Reporter now there is a rush to try to evacuate 1600 residents, even by barge. Another powerful hurricane, jose, is expected to barrel into the area this weekend. 25,000 people have lost power in broward and miamidade counties. There are there are 260 shelters open right now. Its estimated more than 100,000 people could end up in them by the time all of this is said and done. Well, meg, so much attention has been focused, and rightfully so, on preparing the areas where the storm is headed next. What about the relief efforts in the areas its already hit in the caribbean . Reporter such a good question. The caribbean is still reeling after more than 20 people were killed. The state department has told cbs news that there are planes on the ground in san juan and they have started to fly to san st. Maarten to rescue people before hurricane jose roars in. Another hurricane for these devastated islands is hard to black believe. Landfall tomorrow night . Its expected tonight and into tomorrow morning, in fact. So right now you can see all of the rain thats coming down across the florida keys. We saw the raindrops on our live camera from miami. So its already affecting florida. Of course, cuba getting inundated right now along with the bahamas. Here is another view of the futurecast. You can see how massive of a range its going to be impacting. So bringing not only just rain, obviously. We have been talking about the storm surge, the strong wind gusts, but expecting tornados to come out of the hurricane. So thats also going to cause more damage. I will track this for you now. Winds sustained at 130. A category 4 hurricane. You can see where the watches and warnings are across southern florida and the keys. So this is this afternoon. The next few hours still hanging out around cuba, then by late tonight, 11 00 our time, around midnight for florida for our type, it will impact the florida keys and then by tomorrow morning, Early Morning thats when we are going to see it start to really inundate florida. Its moving more towards the west coast now of florida the way the spaghetti plots have been showing this. It will stay a category 3 into georgia and go further into the southeastern portion of the united states. I am also going to be tracking jose for you. I will bring that to you later on. Two major airports, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood International airport and miami are shut down. The Message Boards at sfo show all flights in and out of miami canceled. We spoke with a few of the final passengers to make it out of florida yesterday. As we took off, when we were finally in the air, this one person just did a slow clap and the whole plane went with it and did the slow clap with him. I think there was tension not just because of the storm, the flight before us in the same gate got canceled because they didnt have enough flight attendants. Now, one flight that made it to florida, this loaded c130. It took off from Moffett Field yesterday carrying members of the air National Guards 129th res u wing. Many of them just got back from texas where they saved more than 100 people from the floodwaters of hurricane harvey. I dont know. Harvey, its like they came in afterwards. This time they are going in beforehand. The mission in florida is expected to be similar to the job they did in texas. They are also bringing two helicopters with highly trained para rescuers on board. Starting today, you can donate through the app store and itunes. To mexico where the country is recovering from a 12 punch. A deadly earthquake and a roaring hurricane. The death toll from the 8. 1 magnitude earthquake is now up to 61 people. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit mexico. Health Officials Say they have linked two cases of hepatitis a to the jails in santa clara county. Hepatitis a is an Infectious Disease of the liver. An inmate and a staff member recently contracted this virus. We dont know whether the cases are linked together, but given that there are outbreaks in santa cruz and san diego county, we have really leaned in and are offering vaccinations to both inmates to prevent further cases. Health officials point out this is not an outbreak. The last case reported of hepatitis a at the jail was in 2012. The bay area is apparently in the middle of a flea outbreak. We spoke to exterminators who say there is a bag log of calls. One resident tells us that fleas are invading his apartment. Tried to buy some carpet powder to kill the fleas. Sold out at target, petco, the other pet store. Cant get it. A local exterminator says the recent hot weather may be to blame for all the fleas. Googles Free Community shuttles are sticking around Mountain View a while longer. They Just Announced they are renewing the service to the end of 2018. This program started in 2014 and was only supposed to last a couple years, but after a slow start ridership has increased by 60 last year. The shuttles work with an app and riders say they running on time. For free, thats good. Use it. Why not . I think its great. I think its something that is very much needed in the community. We know that the storm is still about 200 miles offshore, but have you sensed a shift in the weather just yet . Reporter not really here. It comes and goes. Earlier there was a downpour and we thought here we go. Then it stopped. Now we see these pockets of wind and rain, but its still relatively mild here. There are stronger gusts along the coast. And the rain just the wind just picks up from time to time, but we havent seen the thick of it yet. All right very much. Meg oliver in miami. Stay safe as that storm approaches. So tracking irmas path. Landfall tonight into sunday . Thats right. It made a surprise move. It made landfall in cuba north of cuba for a moment there. The eye actually hit the ground there in cuba and now thats what caused those sustained winds to die down to 135mile perhour winds. But as it moves closer towards florida, those waters there are warmer. About 90 degrees. Sea surface temperatures. Thats increasing those sustained winds and its going to most likely remain a category 4 as it makes landfall. Look at the amount of Water Associated with this. Its just churning over the ocean, picking up more and more water, and its going to dump it across florida. Those watches and warnings have been extended. You see them going all the way through the western portions of florida extending up towards georgia with the watches and those warnings, of course, in place. Now they have increased. Hurricane conditions expected to pound southern florida tonight, especially the florida keys. We heard the storm surge, 6 to 12 feet. Up to 20 inches of rain in some areas, and those sustained winds between 130 to 155mile perhour winds. Those are sustained, constantly coming. And i also want to track jose because we have to feel for that tiny island of barbuda, the Leeward Islands. Winds sustained at 145. So extremely powerful yet again. They got hit by Hurricane Irma, a category 4. Now another one. You can see how it moves just north of those tiny Leeward Islands north of puerto rico. Its also another massive storm. So, of course, they are going to feel the impacts. Thank you. Well, everyone is racing to get out of irmas way. These guys are flying straight into the storm. The Hurricane Hunters captured this terrifying view as they gather vital data on the storms power and path. The governor is warning the residents to leave now as Emergency Responders prepare for Hurricane Irma. Emergency lanes on highways are open to help speed up the evacuations. 7,000 Florida National guard members have been deployed across the state. High water vehicles are on standby and s. W. A. T. Vehicles have been outfitted for paramedics. Most of the state is expected to be impacted in one way or another by the storm. This storm is wider than our entire state. Think about that. Its wider than our entire state. Now, resources have been spread out across the entire state. This means that the recovery took take a long longer than previous storms. Back here at home, today oakland city officials preparing for a day of protest after the Trump Administration announced they would be canceling the daca program. Here is video from a march in San Francisco on tuesday. The deferred action for Childhood Arrivals Program protects undocumented immigrants who came to the u. S. As children. It protects them from deportation. Protesters expect today to rally gala plaza. They have staff standing by to keep the rally peaceful. Meantime, the university of california is suing the Trump Administration over the decision to end daca. Uc president Janet Napolitano established the daca program when she was the Homeland Security secretary under president obama. The lawsuit allegation the repeal did not follow proper legal procedures and tramples on due process rights. There are about 4,000 undocumented students in the uc system along with some employees. They could face deportation if congress does not take action it save the program. Phil matier and melissa caen asked former San Francisco mayor willie brown about what he thought about the decision to rescind daca protections. Big, big, big. Suddenly, the president is aware that thats a rat hole he does not wish to go down. And believe me. So this happened wednesday night at a baskinrobbins in vallejo. There it is. The man walk in, no shirt, right into the store. He disappears from view, comes back. Moments later his arms full of packages containing ice cream cakes. And they took a rock, threw it through the side door so hard to smashed through the windows of the side door through our sundae station and made a hole into the back wall. And then they came in, tore apart the cakes freezer doors, grabbed as many cakes as they could, and walked right on out. The owner says she has had problems before, including an Armed Robbery back in march. She plans to increase the number of surveillance cameras in that store. No word what was the cause. And new this morning, caltrans aims to reopen highway 1 at the southernmost end of big sur by the late summer of 2018. Caltrans says its the largest slide along the big sur coast. The timeline for reopening and rebuilding the road depends on the winters weather conditions. [ laughter ] so nemo, and please feel to jump in, he has this boot right here obviously, and its a prosthetic. Basically, nemo was just born with a leg that wasnt fully developed and so he is learning to use this prosthetic. He does really well with it am he is specifically looking for a home with a child who also has a prosthetic. Looking to pair him with a human owner that would have a unique understanding of the challenges that he faces is kind of what you are looking for. What about papillon . She was a tiny puppy. We had her on a cart. She was tiny. Yeah. She has grown big and strong. And her back legs dont work normally. So basically there are things we dont know for sure about, you know, as far as will she need certain medical care in the future or, you know, Different Things like that. So its important for whoever is interested in her to know she is not going on hikes. You know, she is not really even going on long walks in the neighborhood. Senior citizens. This weeks jefferson award winner says it was the kindness Nobel Peace Prize knowing an act of kindness can change a life inspired a woman. This weeks jefferson award winner says it was the kindness of strangers that gave her hope as a child. Now she is paying it forward. Okay. Reporter she was six years old when her family fled vietnam and she remembers the people who were kind to her. Those were priceless moments. When somebody took me and said, and make me feel at home, make me feel complete. Reporter she finds inspiration in those moments. After decades of volunteering to help children, the homeless and elderly, in 2016 she started a nonprofit specifically to help Senior Citizens. Its a tragedy for me if i see seniors who dont have family, someone to help them. Reporter her organization is meta for life. Meta for kindness. Its the make a wish for the elderly who either dont have family or the money to see a dream fulfilled. Taking our seniors to monterey bay, to whale watch. Reporter there have been trips to the symphony in San Francisco and family reunions in florida. In less than two years, 23 wishes have been fulfilled. Also to one of our cancer patients, that he wants to stay local. Be in a hotel for two weeks because he never really had a home. Reporter they sent a woman to vietnam to see her 98year old mother. Her heart look like ocean. Big one. Reporter she couldnt afford a plane ticket. When i pass away, i bring her my love, my heart. Put in my heart. I never forget her. A simple act of kindness can make someones life just a whole lot better, even for that moment. It gives a sense of hope. The track has been shifting a little bit . Do we know exactly where its going to make landfall . Right now the southwestern portion of florida. So the florida keys. Look where it is now. You can see the outer bands there bringing heavy rain now into miami. Lightning strikes already occurring there. There is a threat of now isolated tornados that are going to appear as this instability comes through. So the eye, you see it. It actually made landfall in northern portions of cuba and now its moving further west towards florida there. So the rain futurecast should show you an idea of where the eye is headed. Look at it there. It looks on the western coast. Initially, we thought it would be on the east coast. Now it looks like there is a likelihood of it hitting landfall there in southern florida somewhere. Of course thats still going to the hurricane will determine that. It wiggles around a lot as it gets in the warmer water. Intense rain, storm surges on its way to florida. 12 feet storm surge. A massive storm. We will begin to know its effects in probably 24 hours.
