A certain amount of unvaccinated children that puts them more at risk and we then may have to close school for a while. Reporter medicaldr. Bill anders says thats a valid concern. As a member of society we have a responsibility to that society and that is to participate in the general immunity of our population. To avoid that, to not perform in that way, violates our obligations to society. Reporter the other concern is ethical. Anders says doctors need to be giving exemptions for real medical reasons, not parental concerns, and anything else he said should be investigated by the medical board. Clearly patients and children who have i 9 owe Deficiency Syndrome immunoDeficiency Syndrome would be harmed by a vaccination and it would be ethically inappropriate to vaccinate them. However, to lie and say someone has such a condition in order to avoid their responsibility to be part of the immunity of the culture is wrong, ethically wrong and fraudulent. Reporter to be fair, in our conversation with the principal he said the overall number of his students that have been immunized has actually increased overall especially in 7th grade where that next round of vaccination hits. He said this big jump in the medical exemption is really just at the kindergarten level which seems to be the trend across the board. Emily turner, kpix5. Both melissa and alex know j1 could be next on President Trumps chopping block. I wouldnt say it scares me, but i think it would be really sad. Reporter in oakland susie steimle, kpix5. Democrats are, well, a definite minority in congress right now, but they are finding new leverage in dealing with President Trump. Evering the republicans. St recent exam our political reporter melissa caen on how nancy pelosi is outmaneuvering the republicans. Thats right, ken. We just saw an example of this, this deal that nancy pelosi struck with the president , that included Hurricane Harvey relief and a three month increase in the debt ceiling. Heres how she pulled it off. Resist President Trump has been the mantra among democrats in the bay area since november, but in washington today we heard this. I had a great bipartisan meeting with democrat and Republican Leaders in congress. Reporter republicans had wanted 18 months of a debt ceiling increase. They argued that a longer increase would be better for american businesses, but nancy pelosi knew that she had the power. Wall street is wall street. Here the currency of the realm is the votes. You have the votes, no discussion necessary. You dont have the votes, three months. Reporter republicans may be the majority in the house of representatives, but they dont always vote together. Howard epstein is with the San Francisco republican party. Because were split. We have a couple of caucuses and one of them or a couple of them are very stubborn. They say everything has to be our way and they absolutely refuse to compromise and thats a big problem. Reporter republicans have 240 votes in the house. If, for example, the 36 Freedom Caucus members say no to something, that majority is gone. The bill wont pass unless, of course, 14 democrats will vote for it, which is not going to happen unless pelosi approves and thats why she got exactly what she wanted. When the republicans fracture, the power shifts to pelosi, but she says shell negotiate with anyone to get what she wants. But i do know the world we live in is a giant kaleidoscope. One day certain factors are in the design. Say this side of the room is opposed to whats happening on this side of the room. The next day it could be the front of the room versus the back of the room. You never know. So everybody you work with is a resource to you. Reporter on the senate side senator Dianne Feinstein got a lot of heat for saying this about President Trump. I just hope he has the ability to learn and to change and if he does, he can be a good president. Reporter she followed up by saying shes not hopeful that hell change, but she stopped short of saying she wont deal with this administration. Because theres rhetoric and then theres reality and some things like aid to Harvey Victims have to get done and these bay area pragmatists are doing the math and the president appears to be catching on. Thats his style. Thats what people in business do. You know, they cant get it done one way, they get it done another way and they dont do things based strictly on ideology. They use common sense and they negotiate. He will support a daca law now during that press conference this morning congresswoman pelosi says she has assurances from the president that he will support a daca law if the house and senate can pass one, but it will probably have to include money for border security, although she says not for a wall. Melissa caen, kpix5. Another blow to the president s travel ban, the federal Appeals Court in San Francisco today rejected the administrations limited view of who is allowed to enter the country. Reporter it was expensive, so he did research to figure out how to turn that into a wi fi signal for himself and 25 of his immediate neighbors charging them a flat 50 monthly fee. The service is blazing fast with no equipment or installation fee and if something breaks, brandt will just walk over and fix it. But as neighbors started talking, i started getting requests in other areas of the community. Reporter now brandt has high speed antennas all over town and his garage is the command center of an Internet Company serving 140 of the 400 houses in dillon beach with new requests for hookups coming every day. His clients say its a huge change from the snaillike dial up service they were used to. My wife is in the real estate business and im in the home repair business and it really helps our businesses out. Thats the bottom line. Reporter is this your job now . Yes, this is my job.
