This morning, states of emergency have been declared in florida, puerto rico and the u. S. Virgin islands as Hurricane Irma churns west over the northeast caribbean. Irma has grown into a category 4 storm. Sustained winds of 145 Miles Per Hour. The Leeward Islands are expected to feel its effects sometime tonight. School in puerto rico is cancelled today and the National Guard has been activated. A Hurricane Hunter flew into the eye of the storm yesterday. Irma is expected to strengthen over the 48 hours and southeast florida residents are stocking up on supplies. Its still too early to say exactly where irma will hit but landfall on the u. S. Mainland has become more and more likely. You know, well be looking at the predictions of where this storm could go, the intensity of the storm, because all that, all those variables are important to us in terms if there is an Evacuation Order sometime later this week, its a category 1 through 5, they all have different evacuation zones. Irma has the potential to dump up to 10 inches of rain and trigger 23foot waves as it comes ashore. Paul deanno is the chief meteorologist for our San Francisco station kpix and he is tracking Hurricane Irma. Irma has been a strong hurricane for the past 24 hours. Overnight it actually got stronger. Maximum sustained winds are now up to 145 Miles Per Hour with Even Stronger gusts as the forecast track takes it through the Leeward Islands, dangerously close to the Virgin Islands and puerto rico and eventually heading somewhere in the vicinity by florida by saturday. The width of the cone of uncertainty is 450 miles at day five which is that line you see right there. A major threat to florida. On the other end, the storm is south of cuba, so nothing is a guarantee yet. Folks in florida should be preparing but its not a guarantee that its heading in that direction. A Significant Impact is likely in puerto rico and the United StatesVirgin Islands. A Significant Impact is possible for florida as soon as friday night or saturday morning. And that track is not a guarantee. The cone always changes and over the course of the next couple of days will likely change once again. In Southeast Texas gulf coast residents have only just begun the cleanup from Hurricane Harvey. Damages are estimated to total billions of dollars. Of particular concern the superfund sites in texas. Those are sites contaminated by Hazardous Waste posing a health risk. Sandra and her two children live half a mile from one. I know the water is pretty bad. A lot of dangerous hazards touching stuff, but i mean, we have to do what we have to do. Houstons mayor says the citys Drinking Water has not been affected by the storm, but he hopes the epa is taking a close look at the flooded sites. Today President Trump is expected to announce hes ending the program that allows young immigrants brought to this country illegally as children to stay. But he wants to end the daca program with a six month delay giving Congress Time to deal with the political hot potato. Already there is dissension among republican ranks. Reporter daca predicts an estimated 800,000 immigrants that are brought to america as children from deportation. They also receive work permits every two years. They should not be punished for the sins of their parents. Thats just the basic principle we ought to follow here. Jeff flake is among a growing list of republicans who want to make daca a permanent law. To remove them from the country, to split up families is just not the way we ought to go. Jose is worried that ending the daca Program Means his family is one that is going to be torn apart. Its going to be separated. Its scary. Reporter he had a hard time finding stable work after graduating high school but when daca was implemented he went back to school and became a medical assistant. I dont know whats going to happen. I wont have the privilege to help doctors and to help people. Reporter the white house has sent signals that it may consider whatever legislative fix congress can come up with. Daca is just one of the issues facing congress when it returns from its summer recess today. The house is expected to vote on Hurricane Harvey relief funds this week. That tied to raising the debt limit or the larger spending bill needed to keep the government operating. The faa and National FloodInsurance Program also need to be funded past this month.
