The National Weather service says a flood threat in the our ya exists until the middle of next week. We underestimated. We didnt think it was going to be this devastating. Reporter do the math says mark hannah of the Insurance Council of texas and that means five out of six flood victims have no Flood Insurance even though the cost was a little as a few hundred dollars a year for those outside the flood plain. Were talking about thousands of people just now getting back to their home, seeing that theyve got considerable flood damage and theyre going to do what they can, but theyre on their own. Reporter the Small Business administration will offer low interest loans to rebuild but thats on top of existing mortgage payments. Fema will make grants but theyre capped at 30,000 and the average payout is 5,000. The bottom line is while there may be some federal help it generally will be capped and limited and if you dont have Flood Insurance, you may face a financial calamity. Yes. And i think its important for us to think more Going Forward about how we can make sure that a much greater number of people have Flood Insurance so that they have the Financial Resources they need to rebuild after an event like this. Virtually all flood policies are government backed but theres already been 100,000 claims for damaged vehicles, a number thats sure to rise another for wind damage.
