Reporter they are trying to shine a spotlight on it using this Overdose Awareness Day to bring awareness to a bill that would provide safe drug injection sites. It would allow 8 california counties to come up with Legal Framework for safe sites including San Francisco, alameda and santa cruz counties. They are called Safe Consumption Services where users could shoot up drugs in a controlled environment. The bill as authors say the sites would help prevent fatal Drug Overdoses, prevent transmission of hiv and hepatitis c and provide an easy entry point for drug and Mental Health treatment. This is gonna allow, um, Health Professionals to go and seek out these drug users and, you know, offer them treatment in one location. Reporter opponents of this bill largely Law Enforcement and district attorneys argue that this bill may have an impact on crime in the areas surrounding the sites making attractive targets for criminals who would take advantage of impaired victims. And also that it would create further conflict between federal and local drug laws. The bill is now in the senate where its authors including scott weiner trying to gain more traction on it. Anne makovec, kpix 5. Authorities in sacramento say a veteran deputy is dead after he was involved in a shootout. Robert french was with the Sacramento Sheriffs Department for 21 years. He was called to a scene at the ramada inn yesterday to check out a stolen car when he and other deputies arrived two women reportedly led them on a chase and back to a room at the hotel. The women told them a suspect who was involved with a stolen car ring was inside the room. When the deputies knocked on the door, the suspect fired back. The suspect went to the back balcony of the room, exited with a highpowered rifle with a large capacity magazine, and began to engage our deputies in the back. Flooding from harvey knocked out refrigeration units and backup generators inside. 21 people went to the hospital after inhaling fumes, 10 of them deputies but they shouldnt have any longterm problems. Workers and residents at the plant have thankfully evacuated the area. At least 29 people are now confirmed dead as a result of harvey. The worst of flooding this morning is centered about 90 miles east of houston. Today houstons Fire Department will begin a block by block search of thousands of flooded homes to find anyone who is still trapped. Countless pets have been rescued and shelters all over the country are helping. Shelters in seattle, chicago, Colorado Springs and a number of other cities have welcomed dogs and cats who were separated from their owners. Police say they are able to use the data to alert nearby officers to stolen cars, the cars linked to crimes like burglaries or robberies or missing children cases. They are rotting the license plates of thousands of innocent people also reading the license plates of thousands of innocent people leading to worries about who has access to the information. We are just using it to solve crimes. We are not monitoring them in real time. Reporter in a few hours the California Supreme Court is expected to decide if police must disclose all data recorded by license plate readers as Public Information or if that information is protected by laws that keep records from investigation private.
