And that number is expected to rise as the floodwaters begin to recede. The National Guard and coast guard rescued 13,000 people since harvey came ashore as hurricane friday. Countless others rescued by civilians and other agencies about 32,000 evacuees are now living in hundreds of shelters. Including national parks. The governor of texas, says this is a much bigger disaster than Hurricane Katrina, or super storm sandy. He activated 14,000 members of the texas National Guard. At last report, nearly 300,000 homes, and businesses, have no electricity. Well over 210,000 people have applied for federal disaster assistance. And the National Flood Insurance Program has received 37,000 claims. Before the rain stopped, cedar bayou received 52 inches. Record for the continental u. S. Overnight the storm moved east towards the louisiana border. We have reports from anna werner and Michelle Miller. First here is anna. Demarco, we were on our way to beaumont. We had to stop here some 20 miles out. Because the highway we were traveling on, now ends right here in what looks like a lake. And from high up above it is easy to see why rescuers are having so much trouble getting into this area. 100 miles east of houston, Tropical Storm harvey unleashed high winds rain and flash floods on the towns of beaumont and port arthur last night. Every highway is closed. So we cant get out any more. We cant evacuate. The coast guard plucked like this mother and baby off their rooftops in college station, texas. In pine island bayou, civilians threw a life line who a man who clung to a tree in floodwaters five hours. We were screaming, hollering at him. We really thought we lost him. He hollered out. Grabbed vines on a tree. We drove the bolt fast as we could into the treats. Rising waters forced staffers at the port arthur nursing home to evacuate more than 70 patients. I saw this on tv. I cannot believe, wade through the water, somebody gave me a ride in the boat. Just breaks my heart. No, no, dont be sorry. Officials are pleading from help with any one with a boat. Searchandrescue. Reporter im Michelle Miller in orange, texas, 23 miles north of port arthur. Over here, the north orange baptist church. Turned make shift shelter is one of the last options for the entire town. Two other shelters flooded out overnight. The water is flowing. In port arthur, at least two shelters, flooded there too. Nearly 400 are crowded here, the elderly, the sick. Young families like craig bearfield they woke up with walter in their bedroom. Happy i have my family here. Long as we are smiling. We will be okay. God got us. As Tropical Storm harvey came back ashore, 80 miles east of here lane la, we saw the predawn desperation in orange firsthand. It is unbelievable how many cars are stranded along i10. Some two feet of rain fell in just 24 hours. These assisted living residents had to be rescued by boat and driven here to north orange baptist by truck. This is why boats are so vital here. We are half a mile from where the shelter is. And, surrounding neighborhoods, look like this. Streets flowing, like bayous. Demarco. All right, michelle, thank you for that report. In northeast houston, a van was swept off a bridge, and swallowed by floodwaters sunday. Trapped inside were four children and two adults. And today, we learned of their fate. Jericka duncan has the story. It was the worst possible discovery for the saldovar family. Police found the white van where the family of six had been trapped by a wall of walter that swept them off the road. Monday, he described how he tried in vain off to get help. Took the van into a ditch. Jumped out. Tried to open the doors. Couldnt get the doors open. All my nieces and nephews drown. Sheriff ed gonzalez confirmed, four children, ages 6 to 16 died along with their great grandparents. They had tried desperately to escape the roaring floodwaters at the height of the storm. It just swept the van back. Embanked. Under four feet of water invisible at the time. The uncle the only one to make it out of the van visit itted the grim scene with friends and family. When they were ready to leave, police gently escorted them away. Since harvey made landfall, at least 11 people have died. Mainly due to floodwaters. We are riding with the Navy Helicopter squadron 7. The 7th person they have rescued here in this area. The 7th, the neighborhood alone, what they have been doing, is flying in from college station, several hundred miles away. 150 miles away. Coming to the beaumont port arthur area. Where harvey hit overnight. At this point they are looking for any one who may need help. People have put, white towels, or white shirts by their house. Indicating they need help. We see, four, five, rescue helicopters, the coast guard, navy, other agencies here. That are trying to help who ever needs help. This right now, seems to be the hot spot for where there are a lot of residents. Many of the roads in, we cant. Theyre really just nonexistent at this point. People that are coming, up, telling us the water is cold. That they have been sitting in, two to three feet of water for a very long time. One of the first rescues came up, an older woman. They wanted women in high risk pregnancies, people go into labor during the storm to be at the marriott, steps away from Childrens Hospital right there. And across the street there is another emergency room. Is your house okay. The doctor leads the Emergency Management team at texas Childrens Hospital where elliott and 26 others have been born since saturday. Harvey has been, the kind of ongoing, issue. So it has been days on days. But the staff was ready for that. And the hospital was designed to re resist a post hurricane flood. Doors, basement submarine doors, shut us off underground. Childrens has seen minor leaks. See a tree down there. North of downtown, rising floodwaters, forced Saint Lukes Hospital to evacuate 29 patients monday using boats and trucks. Our biggest concern was the water that surrounded the hospital, accessibility. We did have water that got into our main powerhouse. Where all of our operational power and needed, Life Sustaining equipment comes from. About 40 nurses and staff are still stranded inside the hospital. Their houses have been destroyed, and and theyre not able to return home. But like so many emergency workers they stayed on the job. Helping patients like sarah, her husband, and, newborn baby. Every single staff member and nurse, and doctor that has been here, they have family members, for them to, stay focused on, on, my family, that, really, really means a lot to me. As harvey churns its way into louisiana it is bringing back memories of a deadly storm. It was 12 years ago this week, Hurricane Katrina devastated new orleans. Some katrina evacuees settled in houston again find themselves in shelters. Adrianna diaz is outside one. The Convention Center is prepared to welcome 5,000. And theyre going through the ordeal in a second time in a second city. Same thing. Pretty much the same thing. And it is like deja vu.
