At one point 90 minutes ago, the photo journalist and i tried to get out of our truck and we struggled to open the truck doors out here at tesla road. That is what firefighters are facing trying to stop this fire from growing. Ripping up valleys leaving post apocalyptic scenes in its wake, the tesla fire in Alameda County chewed through 2500 acres in no time flat. Dry grass and trees contributed but the wind was the real culprit. We have strong winds coming through the night. Reporter there were stands of oak trees transstormed into smoldering kindling and firefighters were struggleing to keep up. They are aggressive, and at times they have to pull back and besupported by air operations and dozer operations as well. Reporter that is when air tankers shrouded in smoke took over dropping retardant. The fire jumped the Alameda County line into san joaquin. The firefighters are thankful for small victories. We take our successes on a smaller scale. We had fire making the runs at some structures and we have bumped the fire off of those structures. Reporter one structure not a house did burn in this fire some time this afternoon. But we did see example after example out here on tesla road where homes, where they had proper defensible space. The house itself was still standing. A testament to the work these firefighters are doing out here. The fire is about 5 contain. They will be out here all night long working on this fire. Altamont pass is one of the gaps where we see the strongest winds and we will see it again tomorrow with wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour. Not terribly hot, but it will be windy.
