Live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. And we have breaking news tonight. Chaos as protesters shut down a bay area freeway. This all started as a peaceful protest, but then things spiraled out of control in the past hour. This is what it look like a short time ago at 980 in oakland. Gridlock. Chp was nowhere to be seen for some time, it wasnt until 20 minutes later we saw officers roll up at 10 20 tonight. Once chp got there, they got creative to clear the log jam. We saw them telling cars to drive the wrong direction to get out. This protest followed a Police Shooting that left a suspect dead. Christin ayers has that part of our story. They started shooting and shooting. Boom, boom. Reporter she couldnt believe what she was seeing. The tail end of a Police Pursuit that ended in gunfire. Oakland police say it started when an officer spotted a car that had been linked to a july 21st armed robbery. There was a chase that ended with a crash here. And then he got in the car and started running. He had the gun in his hand. He was running for his life. Reporter she says the suspect who Police Identified only as a 24yearold oakland man ran from police, tripped, and was shot as he lay on the ground. Drop the gun, drop the gun. He didnt want to drop the gun so they hit him six or seven times. Reporter but Oakland Police chief told a different story saying the man tried to carjack someone after the crash and then. The suspect advanced towards the officers while holding a pistol in his hand. Officers then discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. Reporter three officers, a six year veteran, a seven year vetter rand and a rookie opened fire. They were quick to call press conferences. A trauma pack they use to try to help gunshot victims. All three officers were wearing body cameras that were rolling. A show of transparency that was intentional. We are trying to show what is going on. Reporter in oakland, christin ayers, kpix5. Updating you on the freeway mess as we see ate 980 in downtown oakland near the 880 interchange where all this is going on. It has been closed more than a half hour tonight. Protesters are off the freeway now. Chp has gotten traffic moving once again. New Folsom Prison near sacramento is under extra close watch tonight after 70 inmates rioted this afternoon. Betty yu shows us when the dust settled, one of california east most notorious prisoners was dead. Reporter his friends called him yogi bear. A man that hardly suggests the convicted rapest he was or the convict that was part of the san quentin six. The man who slashed the throats of three guards in a dramatic escape attempt back in 1971. All these years later, hugo pinell ended a long spell of solitary confinement. Today, in the exercise yard at new Folsom Prison, another con shanked him and he died. Hugo was definitely the target. His family is devastated by this. Reporter hugos attorney said he had concerns about his clients safety at the maximum security prison. There is clear undenial failure to protect him. There have been significant threats against him because of his reputation. Reporter that reputation included killing another prison guard five months before he tried to kill his way out of quentin. He was serving life at new folsom. His Attorney Says hugo had no record of violence in the last 30 years. Many people focus on the 1971 incident at saint quentin. Hes the only person left in prison that is directly associated with that incident. So, he has become, you know, the target. Reporter hugos Attorney Says his client was in solitary confinement for nearly 45 years. He was shocked to find out hugo was mixed in with the general population just two weeks ago. This stolen car crashed on the bay bridge early this morning and tonight, it looks like the driver made one of the craziest escapes from police we have ever heard of. Andria borba is at the bay bridge toll plaza where a soaking wet woman wearing a black dress showed up and flagged down a truck driver. Andria . Reporter well ken, there are questions tonight. First, why did this woman run from the california highway patrol, and second, how did she survive the fall and the icy cold water . The ingredients for an action sequence straight out of a summer hollywood blockbuster were there. Stolen car out of los angeles . Check. Car crash with a spectacular backdrop . Check. It is a rather bizarre story. Reporter it was just before 2 00 a. M. When this Nissan Maxima spun out and crashed on the eastern span of the bay bridge. Chp officers saw the crash and rushed over. When they get there, the vehicle is abandoned. Reporter the three women inside made it to the bike pathment the driver jumped the rail. And officer trained in Mental Health procedures tried to grab her and they struggled 90 seconds. She slipped and fell. Reporter the woman dropped 70 feet between the new and old spans of the bay bridge into 60 degree water. That is when the coast guard was called in. Cold water drowning. Not having insulated layers increases the time of how long you can be in the water. Reporter this is where the cinematic story should take a tragic turn, but somehow, it is believed the woman survived the fall and chilly water and made it to shore. There were sightings near the radio towers and then, this afternoon, a dump truck driver pulled into oakland chp headquarters saying he picked up a wet woman near the toll plaza and took her to the east bay. The two other people in that vehicle were questioned and released. They found that womans id in the water. They are trying to track her down and check on her mental conditions. Andria borba, kpix5. Alameda police tell us they have arrested the prowl wore has been targeting homes at night and who sexually assaulted a young girl in her own bedroom. The suspect is 17 years old. Detectives say this Surveillance Video we showed you last night helped find him. He would get into homes through an open window or unlocked door. Investigators say he was more interested in the victims than stealing. Very intrusive when someone comes in your home. Most of the burglaries occur, they want to burglarize the home for the property in the home. And they do that when no one is home so they can take their time and select the desired property. This case, the reason it is called a hot prowl is because the occupants are home and it is very frightening to people. Police say they have no idea how he chose his victims. Since he is 17, they are not releasing his name. A former fremont teacher is behind bars tonight after 14 years on the run. 52yearold frank montenegro was charged in 2001 with sexually assaulting two boys. He fled to mexico a short time later. The fbi tracked him down in los angeles where he had been living for years. He taught at two elementary schools. The jerusalem fire has crossed over into napa county. It has burned over 20,000 acres since it got started in lake county sunday. Just 16 contained. Joe vasquez shows us it is coming at firefighters from all sides. Dozens of people protesting the Police Killing of a suspect earlier today in oakland. They got up on the freeway and blocked all lanes of traffic. Chp showed up and cleared that group off the roadway. This is not a war zone. It is a major port city in china. And tonight, at least 44 people there are dead after this massive explosion. As we look at the weather graphics between now and 5 00 in the morning, this will be the peak. The best time. And helping us this year is the fact the moon is only illuminated 3 . It is nearly a new moon. How many meteors . 100 per hour. It is super easy. Go outside, let your eyes get adjusted to the light or to the darkness. And then just simply look up. And a very good chance you will see several meteors tonight. One little fly in the ointment. That is the cloud cover moving in. Most of San Francisco wont be able to see it because you are cloudy.
