Detroit, michigan. I went to college in atlanta, georgia, went into the military a few years, made a stop in alabama, indiana, a year and a half in europe and then in 1988 i got stationed at the Oakland Army Base in oakland, california. I lived in oakland from 1988 to 1998. I love the bay area. You were here for the earthquake. Yes, i was here october 17, 1989, 5 04 p. M. Very deep sports connections to the bay area. We will talk about that in a second. The focus of our show is the fact that you are a lay catholic evangelist. Well break that down and talk about what that means. I am looking forward to it. Lets talk about your dad. Dad broke into the nfl in 1952. He was a walk on kind of undrafted free agent in 1952. He set an nfl record that year of most interceptions in one season. A year later he was traded to at the time the chicago cardinals. He played for them from 1953 to 1959. Then from 60 to 66 he played for detroit, lions. Went into the envelope hall of fame in 197 nfl hall of fame in 1974. He has raised a wonderful son. We have a picture of that was taken in 1994, the 20th Animal Rescue verse of his induction at the nfl hall of fame. I hear you get to go back there every once in a while. Yes my brother and i get to go back every year. Its a wonderful time of being able to celebrate dads legacy. The neat thing is that you go back not just as a child of someone in that legacy but also as a preacher. People know you as the preacher. Yes. Tell us about the john maddon story. I am out here in oakland, california. I was preaching in san ramone. After mass was over one of the ushers says there is somebody that wants to meet you in the back. I said okay, fine. Its john maddon. I am like good to see you. He is like i knew you when you were a kid. I was there when you won super bowl against vikings. A year later i go canton, ohio and the first person i see is john maddon. He says what are you doing here . How come you are not preaching at church . I said what are you doing here . Why arent you at church listening . Mr. Maddon is a great catholic guy, go to church every sunday. He and his wife are very devout catholics. We are recording this on the 25th of february but you come back to the San Francisco bay area at the invitation of pastors and different churches. Yes. You have been at st. Gregory in san mateo. Tell us the football connection. Monday night i go to st. Gregorys in san mateo doing what i always do, introducing myself to people. There is a wonderful couple that comes in. I said my name is richard lane. How are you. He says i am tom brady. I said great to meet you. I said did your son let you wear one of the super bowl rings youve got . He says no, left it at home. He says yes, we are tom bradys parents. I said your son will end up with one of these, my fathers nfl hall of fame ring. Wonderful. When we talk about we will talk about your ministry, the heart of who you are. I am really looking forward to it. Folks you will really want to hear this. This is a great story. You are watching mosaic. My name is chris lyford. My guest is richard lane. Well be back in a few minutes. Welcome back to mosaic. My name is chris lyford. We are here with richard lane, a lay catholic evangelist. Richard, i really want to get right to this. The name lay catholic evangelist lets talk about that for a second. Lay meaning i am not a priest or deacon. Catholic evangelist, and some baptist and nondenominational friends tease me saying isnt that an oxymoron . Catholic evangelist. I am like yeah, funny. Basically i am one that goes armed the world doing Parish Missions, leading retreats for deacons, priests, laity but i specialize in missions and really teaching catholics to the joys of our faith, to be able to live the faith every single day, not just be the frozen chosen coming to fulfill our holy day of obligation but really being that catholic that understands evangelization, that e word, to be able to go out and live out our faith and our calling. Now, this is a fire. This fire had to start somewhere in you. Tell us about how you got going with this. Long story short, when i was in the army i got into the army in 1984. I heard my mothers voice boy you better be in somebodys church. I was raised lutheran. I didnt like the protestant services. They had catholic services. So i started going to the Catholic Church. So i just started going. Then when i got out here to the Oakland Army Base i found this wonderful Catholic Church in oakland our lady of lords with a wonderful priest. Love you to death father. I started going there. They welcomed me with open arms. It was absolutely wonderful. I moved to st. Louis and got involved with my church there. They started talking about these things that started with an s and ended with an s. Sacraments. I said i dont have any of those those. I went through the rcia process and i learned what god had been calling me to all my life. I learned the beauties of my faith. I learned that the body and blood soul and divinity was in the eucharist. The word of god made flesh in the eucharist. That set me on fire. So i became catholic april 19, 2003. Then two years later in 2005, i go on the street corners of st. Louis and pass out bibles and inviting people to our church to come and worship as an evangelization effort. I felt the call to start preaching or start talking. The religious Education Teacher said let the spirit lead you. I started with a hail mary, an our father. Then i began speaking about what god meant to me in my life to others. I was ministering to dope dealers, pimps, prostitutes, gang bangers. It was wonderful. The lord has brought me from the streets of st. Louis to be able to preach the gospel around the United States and south america. Wonderful. If people would go to a mission, whats the kind of thing they would experience . They come in and go i have heard about this guy. One of the first things theyll experience is a little bit of joy and a little bit of excitement. Refreshment. Yes. I try to welcome people. I always go and shake peoples hands and make people feel welcome. In the Catholic Church, catholics are terrible at welcoming people. We are horrible, absolutely terrible. Gotta work on it. We really do. If the baptists wanted to convert you, what do they do . Hug on you and love on you until you convert. Lutherans, theyll feed you until you convert. Catholics what do we do . Make you feel guilty until you convert. Its got to be different. Weve got to show the joy. I love our holy father. He says the joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all whoen counter jesus. So if we have that encounter, then we give that same love to everyone. Thats what i try to bring to my Parish Missions. What would you say to the folks upon the end of the mission, how their life, their experience in the faith, participation in the faith will be different the next sunday . Whats going to be different about them who have been and heard that message . Some of the things i have heard from people is through some of the Parish Missions i have conducted they have found that encounter, a true encounter with the eucharist, with the holy spirit, with their faith. They have found a true encounter with the word of god in the bible, the written word of god exogeted into where they can understand the word of god and apply it in their daily lives. I have heard so many people say next time i come to church, now i can understand the bible a little bit better. I am able to go and read it and able to understand how it applies to my life. I am able to be in connection, a better connection with god in prayer through the holy spirit asking for all the blessings and the understanding that comes with our faith. I bet you the faces of those people look different. They do. That is infectious. The action, the calling. I would imagine people get called into ministry kind of like you were, activated the gifts of the holy spirit. Maybe well talk about gifts of the holy spirit next segment. They realize gosh, i have been missing this life of joy, of serving. Its kind of like a yawn. One person yawns and then its infectious. Everyone starts to yawn. This fire that is given to us by the holy spirit is infectious as well. Other people see that love in you. Where did that light come from . I want to go through that. Chris has gone through so many battles but he is still standing. He is still smiling. How does he do that . Its not me. Its the god within me. Its the lords strength in me. Thats it. We are talking with richard lane, lay catholic evangelist. If you want to find out more, richardlaneministrys. Com. Thats correct. Make contact. Maybe ask him to come to your parish for a Parish Mission a couple days. You can schedule that in advance and he will come out. You can be the person that brings that spark that perhaps lights that fire. You are watching mosaic. I am chris lyford. Thats richard lane. Well be right back. Welcome back to mosaic. My name is chris lyford and my guest is richard lane, a lay catholic evangelist. Well talk about what that means. Lets look at your shirt. Richardlaneministrys. Yes. The ministry has been going on for ten years. I kind of rebranded everything. Originally the ministry was known as qorban ministries. That means dedicated to god. Thats what our lives are about. Thats what we do. We are dedicated to god. Everything that we do gives god glory. Just upon hearing that Statement People would say i dont know about me. I dont know if thats for me. Maybe for you. You are really holy. I got holes in my head, holes in my socks. Hes got a lift. I can listen to this guy. What does it mean to say everyone is called to be set aside. Everyone is called. Jesus called everyone, every baptized christian is called to proclaim the good news. Its not just up to the priests, deacons, and the religious. I am not a holy guy. I am far from holy. But god can use anyone. A lot of people think noah had to be a holy guy because god used him to repopulate the world. No, noah was a drunk. They say moses had to be holy because god used him to free his people. Moses was a murderer. Well i am too old to do anything. Guess what . Abram was 75 years old and god says i am going to make you a father of many nations. We are all called. A universal call. Exactly. We are just regular people. I am just a regular guy. I dont have a ph. D in sacred theology. But what i do have is a first peter 3 15 story. What i do have is a reason for my belief. If someone asks why i am catholic its not because my parents were. I am catholic because i believe in the eucharist, because i believe in the body, blood, soul, divinity of jesus christ. Thats why i am catholic. I want everyone else to understand that encounter. I live this life and i go and minister to so many people that are hurting. I was ministering in richmond, california last week to a 17 year old young man in one of the neighborhoods where one of his friends had been murdered. I said how you living today brother . He said day by day. Today was a good day. Nobody i know got killed. He says i am just trying to make it to my 18th birthday. Thats why were called. I went yesterday and visited with a five Year Old Girl suffering through cancer, going through chemotherapy, five years old. She was ashamed because her head was balanced. Yesterday i said i will be back in 30 minutes and went and got my hair cut off. Is that right . Yeah. I have not had my hair cut this low since i was in the military in 84. I said i did this for you. You and i are in this fight together. I will pray for you everyday. Whats her name . I dont want to put her name out there. Sure. But i will pray for her everyday and i will go back and visit her and her family. Its a battle. God calls us to get in the battle. You are walking, responding, listening to the holy spirit right where you are no matter where you are. Yes. We havent gotten to it yet but we are going to talk about what that means on a practical level. But we are also going to talk about what that means on a spiritual level. How do we know jesus is calling us to do something . I hear people say the lord spoke to them. How did they hear that . An ear piece . We are going to talk about that. You didnt get the email, the tweet . No tweet, no memo, no telegram or fax. I got the tweet. We will talk about how us normal people, everyone, hears god speak to their heart and to their mind so as to direct them into a ministry in their own lives. You are watching mosaic. My name is chris lyford. Well be right back. Welcome back to mosaic. My maim is chris lyford. I am with richard lane, lay catholic evangelist, richardlaneministrys. Com. Many catholics have received the sacrament of confirmation. You talk about sacraments being the nuclear bomb of spiritual growth, having fruit in your life. When we receive that sacrament of confirmation thats the holy spirit being poured over us. Many people forget to open that up. In the Catholic Church since 1967 there has been the charismatic renewal which is the outpouring, baptism of the holy spirit. Talk a little bit about what that means and how people can open that up. I know its a big topic. It really is. All started at pent cost. Exactly. It all started 2000 years ago with 120 catholic saints locked in an upper room. The holy spirit came down and descended upon them and gave them the fire to run out and start proclaiming the gospel. They were speaking in tongues. They were prophesying. Somehow we lost that way in 2000 years. I dont know why. When we go to confirmation, what we really should be doing in 8th graders or sophomores in high schools is powerful manifestations. Exactly. We should not be surprised in other words. It goes back to catechesis. We have to do a better job catechizing so they understand and have an encounter with the holy spirit. Right. This is not an emotional psychological thing. This is meeting jesus. Right. Many catholics have never had that encounter themselves. Sure. Thats why the church has these wonderful ministries outside of the traditional. They have acts retreats, christ renews the parish, and other ways to be able to come into contact with the holy spirit. A simple way is simply asking. Exactly. We will do that. Pope francis is talking all about this encounter,en counter, encounter jesus christ. When you encounter him you cant help but talk to people. Right. Before we close, i want to have you say a word about your ministry and how important it is. You have to raise your own finances. Folks, pray for this man because hes got a family. It is not like it is taken care of once you say yes. It might be a little bit harder. How can people support you . If they want to support they can go to the website, richardlaneministrys. Com. There is a link if you want to go to go fund me. Com richard me. Com richardlane. You can do a search on go fund me. If you are looking for a Parish Mission, invite me. Go to the website. I would be happy to come to your parish and do a Parish Mission and be able to help in evangelization at your particular church. Lets do a little evangelization now. Richard, i would like to ask you to close out with a prayer. Maybe somebody is watching this and they say i would like to actually ask the holy spirit i dont know quite how. Lead us. In the name of the father, son, holy spirit. Lord we thank you for this time and thank you for all that you have done. Father god i pray that if there is someone right now within the sound of my voice thats looking at me on the television, that is looking for a change in their life, thats looking for something greater than themselves, i pray holy spirit that you would touch that person right now. I pray that you would send your spirit of understanding, your divine spirit of forttude, strength, counsel to the person. There is someone now that needs your strength. I pray that you would give it to that person right now. Open someones eyes and their ears and give them that newen counter with you right now. We ask this in the most precious name of jesus the christ who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit one god forever and ever. If you believe in the prayer that you have just said, i invite you right now to say the one word amen. Amen. Amen richard lane, catholic evangelist. Richardlaneministrys. Com. Yes.
