Good afternoon everyone, im maria medina. A brush fire is burning on the side of highway 880 in hayward. The charred brush backed top a sound wall protecting a neighborhood on the other side. Flakes broke out an awe hog for flames broke out an hour ago. For a while you can see the flames climbing up to the top of the trees. Only two lanes are open on the southbound side of the freeway. Its causing a major traffic backup. You can see cars bumper to bumper for miles as they funnel down to two lanes and taking a live look from chopper 5, for the most part firefighters have knocked down the flames and spraying down the charred brush. And earlier this morning, a homeless encampment went up in flames in san jose next to a busy highway. The plume of black smoke could be seen for miles. That started near 101 near mckey road. It broke out around 7 00 this morning, the homeless camp was near the sound wall but the flames didnt reach the freeway. One lane of the highway was locked for a short time. An earthquake shook the bay area this morning. It happened at 2 30 a. M. And centered in fremont. It registered on the seismograph here at kpix 5 and people reported feeling it well beyond fremont. Kpix 5s kiet do with just how far reaching this earthquake was. Reporter we are here at the epicenter of the earthquake in fremont. Turns out it was in some rolling foothills just off of the road in the niles canyon area. Mardys home happens to be the closest to the epicenter which is located five miles below ground. The only thing that was damaged . Was his sleep. It was kind of violent shake. Not miochol a roller but just a much of a roller but just a good shake. Reporter 5,000 peopled reporting people reported feeling it from as far away as san jose and watsonville. The usgs recorded well over a dozen aftershocks. And i just felt like my body was shaking like this. Reporter nearly everyone we spoke with in fremont who felt it just jolted me straight out of head. Reporter described it as a sharp blow. Feels like shaking. Reporter like somebody kicked their bed. People reporting it nearby to where it happened. It feels shorter. Reporter theres a decent chance of the next big one happening on the hayward fault. The fault has 31 chance of having a 9. 6 sometime in the next 30 years, thats really kind of close to where this fremont earthquake was. This morning. Reporter and the hayward fault was quiet relatively. The last Major Incident happened back in 1868. Thats when 30 people died. In fremont, kiet do, kpix 5. There have been no reports of any damage or injuries and tweets were flying after the quake this morning. Earthquake was trending throughout the morning. Part of the california bridge may be reopened just a few weeks. The eastbound span of interstate 10 bridge collapsed and although the westbound span still stands, its not passable because its eroded.
