For it was late that evening that bbc announcer read a message from Prime Minister Winston Churchill urging the people of brit tan to use two extended fingers to form a v for victory sign. The v sign seen by the germans. According to a followup bbc broadcast one week later the hand signal as well as the letter v itself were already being used by the underground resistance in occupied europe. Scratched on the mud guards of german cars. Nor was that all. The man calling himself colonel britton went on to demonstrate the sound of the letter v in morse code. Three short knocks one long. And he urged listeners to use it whenever they could. When you call a waiter in a restaurant, call him like this. Hey, garcon. News reels picked up on the v for victory theme. Playing up the resemblance between the morse code v and the first four notes of beethovens fifth symphony. But everywhere they have three dots and a dash of the code. The v sign was a huge morale booster for all those on allied side. Straight through to 1945, and ve day, victory in europe. And then vj day. Victory over japan. Since its chance discovery in 1930 pluto has always been just a blur in the telescope. Until new horizons started sending back its closeup pictures. For the first time were seeing vast empty plains, which appear to be only 100 million years old, at the most. Were seeing mountain ranges some 10,000 feet high. And smack in the middle of plutos Southern Hemisphere we see a huge area shaped like a heart. Astronomers are also attaching names to some of these newly found features, including the heart, which theyre calling the tombaugh regio latin for region. Its named after Clyde Tombaugh the astronomer who first spotted pluto all those years ago. What theyre not calling him is a planet. It was officially downgraded to dwarf planet status in 2006. Its fed armies, helped americans through resections and has endured as a true slice of americaa. Pauley coming up. Its evolved into something that we never could have i am maam inned. Pauley like a rock. Jane a rare day when you encounter a trio of general rock stars the sort of day our Steve Mart Han recently had. During last months assembly at kit edge elementary in north andover, massachusetts, the school honored three former students for their contridukes to kit edge. The former students are alex gamble cera brown and celia desalvo. The kids started working on this gift unwittingly, it was ten years ago in second grade. Out there on the playground one saw this little rock or what locked like a little rock sticking up out of the ground. We followed it. Just like, we found some sticks, were just like dig this. They were out there every recess. Richard was principal during much of the excavation. I have to tell you their hearts were broken when the first frost appeared because they had to stop. But year after year they returned to the project. Digging mostly with sticks and plastic spoons they got from the cafeteria, the kids dug down. Through second grade third grade, fourth and fifth until finally just before moving on to middle school they finished. The principal brought in heavy equipment to lift it out of the hole for them. That was 2008. Now these three are like rock stars around here. Just in the ground sticking out a little bit. Partly because of the accomplishment. Try digging Something Like that with plastic spoons. For what the rock has become. Its evolved into something that we never could have imagined. Today some kids say this rock as the magical power of making friends. Its a beacon to some of the kids that get picked on. By the end of recess, someone will go sit with them. I waited there, then eventually some kids came and that changed my life forever. Walter is a Firm Believer in the power of the rock. I made those friends it felt magical. I thought i would just sit there alone at recess. Then friends came by. I never thought that would happen. Its an amazing rock. It is. Never forget that rock . No. Not as long as i live. When those three started digging they say they used to wonder if one day they would eventually uncover a buried treasure of infinite value. Now we know. They did. Pauley still to come. I said, do you want me to help you out . He said, i want out of this hell hole. Incredible story of survival. And we meet fearless michelle poler. That was amazing. Never thought about the coffee i was drinking having acids. It never dawned on me that it could hurt your teeth. My dentist has told me your enamel is wearing away, and that sounded really scary to me and i was like well can you fix it can you paint it back on and he explained that it was not something that grows back, its kind of a onetime shot and you have to care for it. He told me to use pronamel. Its gonna help protect the enamel in your teeth. It allows me to continue to drink my coffee and to eat healthier and it was a real easy switch to make. Not at all like the life founding beach boy brian wilson actually led for many years. Anthony mason tells us now in our sunday profile. On a warm summer night at the Greek Theater in los angeles last month brian wilson and his band including fellow former beach boy al jardine were running through his repertoire of classics. When a cake was wheeled out from back stage by the extended wilson family. Happy birthday on this night the man many regard as one of americas greatest living songwriters turned 73. Hey brian, whats your birthday wish . My birthday wish . I wish they all could be california girls. Wilson who created the sun and surf sound that filled the sound track of the american summer has had a summer of milestones. Everybody close together. On tour again he has just released his 11th solo album. No pier pressure is the subject of new film about his life love and mercy. How did you feel when you saw the film . Well, i was very happy to see the good parts. But the dark periods very rough to watch. John cusack plays an older brian wilson the artist struggling to recover from depression, Mental Illness and drug abuse. Paul dano plays the younger brian wilson. The musical genius who dreams up the beach boys intricate harmonies and orchestrations. Wilson was just 20 when the beach boys signed with Capitol Records made their first album in this l. A. Studio. Do you remember recording in this room . I remember recording, yeah. He would create the most successful band in america. Blending the voices of his brothers dennis and carl, cousin mike love and close friend al jardine. Mike on bass. Al and dennis and carl in the mid range. We all sang together. And the harmony just happened. The film focuses on two pivotal points in wilsons life. First, the recording of the beach boys highly influential pet sounds album in is the 65 that featured wouldnt it be nice and god only knows. When you were done with that lord did you believe in it . Of course. I was so proud of that album i could have cried. You were . Very proud of it. Your father fought you about it and the band fought you about it. They didnt like it. Mike and the guys didnt like it. Thought it was too advanced music. They wanted to keep making car and surf songs. We got to grow musically. The films other focus the 1908s. And wilsons troubled relationship with dr. Eugene landy, the psychologist accused of making him a virtual prisoner. It took nearly two decades for the film to be made and when brians wife melinda, first saw it. I got up and bolted. You did . Did i. I drove around the city for two hours. It was tough. It was tough to watch. What were you doing while you were driving around the city . Just thinking. Oh, my god did we do the right thing . Its been is the years and this is how its ending. How did you make peace with it . It was the truth. So thats how i made peace with it. When you tell the truth everything works outed. What do you think . I dont know. The film tells the story of how melinda, played by elizabeth banks, first met the troubled musician. I went to a cadillac dealership to buy a car. And she was working there. And when i saw her i liked her the first time i saw her. And she sold me a car. He gave you a card. Uhhuh. What did it say on it . Frightened. Scared. Frightened scared lonely. Did you look at that card right away . Oh, yeah. It was just like, what is he trying to tell me . I knew i liked him. I knew i liked him a lot. When he left the card it was like, whats going on here . Brian was then under the 24 hour care of dr. Landy. Brian wilson is who was controlling every as sect of his life. Even cowriting songs coproducing his records and screening who could see him. Paul giammati plays landy in the film. If brian calls you and asks you out but i need you to call me directly. When you think of that period of your life, what do you think some of. Unhappiness. Being tortured. Something you tried not to think about . Yeah. About six months into their relationship melinda decided she had to act. I called the attorney general and he said there was nothing that could be done unless his family got involved. So a lot of times, with landy, i had to play acting because i knew he was a bad guy. Thats got to be extremely difficult position to be in. It was like i said to my mother. I said, you know, i feel like a child is being abused. And i couldnt find anybody that wanted to help. As much as i hate to say it i think the family just they were at their ropes end with brian they didnt really know what to do. They didnt know how to help him. Right. Get out of here right now. Landy eventually cut melinda off from brian. I saw her for three years. And dr. Landy severed the relationship. How did you respond to that . Negatively. I said, thats not fair. Geep, thats not fair. I asked him one day. I said, do you want me to help you out . He said, i want out of this hell hole. That gave you all the impetus you needed . Yep. Landys grip on wilson was finally broken in is the 91 when the family discovered that brians will had been revised with landy named as his main beneficiary. They eventually won a Court Order Barring the therapist from any further contact with his patient. Brian wilsons nineyear ordeal was over. Brian and ma lynn tarp married in 1995. They have five adopted children together. The song one kind of love on Brian Wilsons new album is dedicated to melinda. How important was melinda in you getting through that . She got me bailed out of it. She got me out of the program. She was my hero. Hes really strong. People dont get that about him. They think that hes passive and he just sits around. But hes strong. There was a moment when you knew youd actually youd one . When we got married. I won. Right . Good interview. Thank you. Pauley ahead a short talk. Afraid of facing her fears. To kick off an occasional series we have short take on woman confronting her keepest 100 fears in 100 days. Holding the tarantula was one of my biggest fears. My heart was pounding really, really fast. And hard and loud. It started to feel so nice. It was really surprising for me. My name is michelle poler i have 100 ways of facing fear. I grew up in venezuela. And i had a lot of fears growing up. So the idea of going on a trapeze is terrifying. But im here to face that fear so lets do it. Welcome to circus warehouse. Well start on the low bar. Kick forward and back. Forward and back. Dont bend the knees. Very scary. Few months ago i gave my students an assignment. Its called the 100 daze project. Im cofounder and leader of the masters in branding program at the school of visual arts in new york city. The students spend 100 days doing one thing again and again and again for 100 days. They decide what the topic is. What are the things that everyone cares about. What are the things that everyone can relate to. What are the things that everybody hopes for. Michelle decided to spend her 100 days exploring and conquering her fears. 100 days. When debby gave us the assignment i knew i had to do something that would change my life. Once in a lifetime. I was walking through Columbus Circle and i see the guy with the snake on the shoulder. He said, this is telling me i had to face the fear. I was not enjoying that moment. I was praying to god the whole time. Michelle and i have been married for four years. She has a lot of fears that have been keeping her from enjoying life to the fullest. For example she was afraid of frying food. Frying food scares me because its boiling oil. I was terrified of the oil coming out of the pan and getting to my skin. Im always trying to push though the limit. Push her to try new stuff. And its just been really hard. So i thank god for this project. Eating insects was crazy. But i invited my husband. That was our lovely dinner for the night. He was even more scared than i was. It was crunchy. It was salty. It wasnt that bad. But the moment that i was getting it to my mouth was terrifying. Oh my, god. That was amazing. It was scarier than i thought. Oh, my god that was amazing. It was scary. Scarier than what i thought it was going to be. Being up there doesnt look so high from here. What i really believe that michelle was experiencing is tapping into her inner strength that was there all along. This isnt magic. She hasnt woken up every day for the last however many days and said, im going to turn into someone that i wasnt before. Shes actually doing is recognizing her own power and her own strength. When i was up there i was thinking, i was going to die. I would rather jump out of a plane like i did. They opened the door and the first thing that came to my mind is, i cannot believe im going to jump off a plane. Its like committing suicide. I kept saying oh, my, god but i was very eager to jump and understand how the feeling was. And definitely was one of the best moments of my life. It was amazing. I dont feel like i have eliminated all of my fears. I have my whole life ahead of me, he believe this project gave me the confidence to approach the fears. I did it. I think anyone can phase their fears. Enjoy every day to the fullest. So you wont sooo, youre all set to book a flight using rewards miles from your Airline Credit card. But then the illusion begins. In it cosby admits he offered money to women after having sex with them. He says he hid the payments and his behavior from his wife. What is make of all this . Thoughts now from author and actor Joseph Phillips who once appeared on the cosby show. Legendary basketball coach john wooden was often quoted speaking about the importance of character. More concerned with your character because your character what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you have. We idolize men based on reputation we open ourselves up for. Admire a president then discover that hes a chronic liar and a cheat. Its all right with you, dad. Or americas dad confused of being a serial rapist. If the allegations against will cosby are true which i believe them to be, then bill cosby is a man with a tremendously flawed character who enjoyed a stellar reputation. Bill cosby is also more than that, isnt he . Equality and fairness. In spite of his flawed character, bill cosby was a brilliant comic and actor, a therapist, a pay philanthropist, the good works that bolstered his reputation created a regular see. The bill cosby legacy. What becomes of those works when his true character revealed he suffers the inevitable fall from grace. Do we simply discard a mans brilliance, his flap pe and his wisdom. For some the answer is zero. The gravity of his acts demand that his legacy be tossed into the trash bin of history. The value of his works outweighs his character flaw, legacy a power mount must be guarded. Still forkers others like myself, there is a struggle to reconcile the condemn the behavior while preserving what was good and value on the other. Its a difficult balancing act to be concern. It may be that none of us has the moral equilibrium to pull it off. Behaviors carry consequences. Watching your legacy crumble before your eyes is one consequence. The legal consequences may follow. One thing for certain is that the cosby legacy will be determined by the character bill cosby demonstrates now in this moment. His reputation no longer matters. And a partnership with hp can help you accelerate down a path created by people, technology and ideas. To move your company from what it is now. To what it needs to become.
