The man charged in last weeks deadly shooting at pier 14 was wanted by federal immigration authorities and that has prompted a national debate. Political analyst melissa griffincaen is here. We all heard of Francisco Sanchez, he was arrested for killing state steinle. He kate steinle. Hed already been deported five times when federal immigration officials turned him over to the San Francisco yale jail. Its because he had the outstanding marijuana charge here. But immigration officials asked that the sheriff hang on to sanchez after the marijuana charge had been dealt with so they could come and take him back into bustdy. Despite that custody. Despite that request, the day after he was brought to the jail the marijuana charge was dismissed and he was released the reason he was released is because of a law we have here in San Francisco that basically says we do not honor requests by immigration to detain people. If immigration wants us to hold someone in jail, they have to have a warrant. We only cooperate when we legally have to. Lets call it the no detainer law. That law was passed in 2013 by a unanimous vote at the board of supervisors. And signed just a few days later by mayor ed lee. So i got to tell you, those basically no political opposition to this law. When it passed everybody was on board with this. It was a very big moment at city hall. So melissa those who support it. Supported it. Do you think theyre regretting that decision now . Theyre certainly being very quiet right now. In the wake of all this. Although the story did break on friday of a holiday weekend. So that might explain. Now mayor lee is running for re election thisser year. But he doesnt have any major opponents. So while im sure the issue will come up probably not going to damage his prospects, but there are two races that probably will be affected by this. The first is a race for San Franciscos sheriff. Our current sheriff Ross Mirkarimi is up for reelection this year. And he has been a huge supporter of this no detainer law. And unlike ed lee, mirkarimi has a credible opponent. Vicky hen see and i doubt miss hen nisi is going to let anyone forget that he chose to release sanchez. The other race is the california state senate. Now one of our bay area senators mark leno is termed out next year and it seems like everyone is thinking about running for this seat. So three people considering running are supervisors david campos, jane kim, and assemblyman tom am yea know. And as they decide whether theyre going to run, they have to be thinking now about how big of a problem their past support of this kind of law could be. Look off strip for a minute. First of all cate cauguiran tracked down a supervisor this weekend and she has her on camera going im not going to go there. Not going to say anything. It seems to me that they passed this thing unanimously and then refuse to stand up and talk about what their theory was behind not you know honoring requests from immigration to hold on to some of these people. Especially somebody who has seven felonies. I could see i mean i can tell you right now, theyre all gathering with their communications folks again everyone sort of dispersed for the holiday. I think we will hear nor in the course of the more in the course of the next couple of days about statements from them about their position. But again they cant keep quiet for the duration. Dont you think as per usual with politicians, theyre waiting for it to blow over . Well, it actually remains to be seen whether its going to blow over. I mean it did come up on the holiday weekend. Were not really sure if its got legs enough to carry over into a broader boy from what ive heard i think its got legs. We will see. I mean yeah i think they are hoping maybe this will die down a bit. How do you think its going to play nationally . Probably as candidates talk about immigration and already seen donald trump for example weighing in on this. But this might bring up another debate thats been floating around for a while. Now the 2012 republican platform contained the following provision. In order to restore the rule of law, federal funding should be denied to sanctuary cities that violate federal law and endanger their own citizens. And federal funding should be denied to universities that provide instate tuition rates to illegal aliens and open defiance of federal law. So this the threat to cut federal funding for sanctuary cities like San Francisco is not new. But it will probably get some new attention and debate based on what has happened here recently. You can look for that. Well see what happens. All right thank you so much. Thanks. Its now 6 52.
