Fixed it. An extraordinary moment at the white house. Family and friends make of an emotional plea to President Trump to act on gun control. Good evening, thank you for joining us. Im dan ashley. Ama daetz is off. Family, frebds friends and loved ones of parkland, florida. Didnt hold back. Pleading for something to be done. And the president listened. Here is the White House Correspondent jongtening karl. For nearly an hour the president sat listening to the horrific firsthand accounts of senseless violence. Justin gruber was hiding in a closet and texting his father as his classmates were gunned down. I was born into a world where i never experienced safety and peace. There needs to be a significant change in this country, because this has to never happen again. And people should be able to feel that going to school they can be safe. His father begging the president to do something. Its a human issue. People are dying. And we have to stop this. We have to stop. If he is not old enough to buy a drink to go and buy a beer. He shouldnt be able to buy a gun at 18 years old. Thats just a common sense. We have to do common sense. Please, mr. Trump, these are things we have to do. We got to do something about this. We cannot have our charge die. Andrew pal okays 18yearold daughter was one of the 17 killed at Stoneman Douglas high school last we can. Mr. Pollack stood with his sons beside him. Were here because my daughter has no voice. She was murdered last week and taken from us. Shot nine times on the third floor. We as a country failed our children. This shouldnt happen. We go to the airport. I cant get on a plane with a bottled water. But we leave it some animal could walk into a school and shoot our children. And its just not right. And we need to come together as a country and work on whats important. And thats protecting our children. In the schools. Thats the only thing that matters right now. Everyone has to come together and not think about different laws. We need to come together as a country, not different parties a, and figure out how we protect the schools. How many schools, how many children have to get shot . It stops here with in administration and me. Im not im not going to sleep until its fixed. All the School Shootings. It doesnt make sense. Fix it. It should have been one School Shooting and we should have fixed it. And im pissed because my daughter im not going to see again. She is not here. She is not here. She is in king david ceremony thats where i go to see my kid now. And it stops. We all Work Together and come up with the right idea. And its school safety. Thats it. No other discussions. Security, whatever we have to do. Get the right people, the consultants. Its niece are a commodities im never seeing my kid again. I want you all to know that. Never ever will i see my kid. I want it to sink it. Its ee ternlt. My beautiful daughter im never going to see again. Its simple. We could fix it. Samuel was texting with his brother a there were above as a gunman murdered a classmate. I turned 18 the day after. Woke up to the news my best friend was gone. And i dont understand why i can still go in a store and buy a weapon of war, an ar. I was reading today that a person 20 years old walked into a store and bought an ar15 in five minutes with an expired id. How is it that easy to buy this type of weapon. How do we not stop this after clum bine after sandy hook. Im sitting with a mother that rots her son. Then the president heard from nicole whose 20yearold son was among those murdered in the sandy hook. These deaths are preventible. I implore you, consider your own children. You dont want to be me. No parent does. And you have have the ability to make a difference and save lives today. Please dont waste this. After the stories were told the president asked for ideas to stop the violence in schools. And one possible solution, which may not be popular, would be to have people in the school, teachers, administrators who have volunteered to have a firearm safely locked in the classroom, who are given training throughout the year. It was an idea the president seemed to like. He brought up assist coach aaron feid who died last week. If the coach had a firearm in his locker when he ran at this guy the coach was very brave. Saved a lot of lives i suspect. But if he had a firearm he wouldnt have had to run he would have shot and that would have been the end. The president asked for a show of hands. Does anybody like that idea here . Does anybody like it . Right . Yes. For med of your beautiful meadow. We talked about that. And do people feel strongly against it . Anybody . Anybody . Strongly against it . All right. We can understand both sides now. And certainly its controversial. But well study that along with many other ideas. But the father of one of the sandy hook victims stood up saying his wife is a teacher and this is just too much pressure. And she will tell you that School Teachers have more than enough responsibilities right now than to have to have the awesome responsibility of lethal force to take a life. Thank you. Reporter jonathan karl. Very powerful as you can tell. As President Trump listened to the emotional stories he was hold ago piece of white house stationary with five discussion points, including what would you most want me to know about your experience . What can we do to help you feel safe . And i hear you. The president did not a appear to use any prompts. But this and other images of the card went viral after the event. Across the country students walked out of class demanding tougher gun laws one week after the shooting in parkland. In coral springs, five miles from the shooting, students formed a heart on the football field. Some marched to Stoneman Douglas high school channing never again. High School Students around chicago walked out of schools carrying signs and chanting. Some felt they need to take over and demand change since adults arent taking action. And the bay area schools joined the wuk out. Our reporter was there. And has more on the impact that they hope to make. We are a community that can change the world. Yes. Our generation has a voice. A group of students at alamedas high school walked out of class and met for a rally at the front of campus joining thousands of others throughout the country, part of the never again movement that began after last weeks deadly shooting in florida. It could happen anywhere any time. So just be aware. If all of us Work Together, you know if all of us put our voices out there, all of us put our minds to it oh, our impact would be so much bigger than anything anyone else is doing at the moment. Students held a moment of silence to honor the 17 victims killed at Stoneman Douglas high school. They told me they want stricker gun control laws and safer schools. Bullet attention are really cheap to get. Its like you should up the bullet price in fact if you are concerned on guns. I dont feel like civilians should have guns. Especially if they have Mental Health problems. We support students and student voice. But principal Daniel Hearst says stu consequences for skipping class. He says the shooting prompted them to review safety procedures. There is a general sentiment of this feeling of a lack of safety, feeling basically unsafe to be a student to be in a school. And what would what would happen if that happened here . And it is its really unsettling. Hearst says they have been holding safety meetings and they have plans for an active shooter drill.
