Reporter that is the devins roar of cooling fans at this labs supercomputer. Thousands of individual computer chips working together to solve one problem. One problem that could face the bay area any day now. 7 earthquake on the hayward fault. An earthquake happened like that in 1868 but only 3,000 people lived in the east bay. With houses freeways and water mains like this in hayward that finally burst after years of fault cream. Our electricity and gas, transportation corridors have to cross many major faults gloo this could help keep them safe. The earthquake starts in the north near richmond and travels to the south. The colors show the intensity of the ground shaking. Its not a real earthquake. Its the most detailed computer simulation ever made. A magnitude 7 quake in the east bay and based on real measurements. We look at smaller earthquakes that happened in erik berkeley last month. One thing the simulation shows more clearly than ever is when it comes to shaking, the east bay is backward. The hills shake more and the flat areas shake less. These rocks have been dragged along the hayward fault over millions of years and been scrunched up and compressed. Meaning the hills are made of soft rock that can could shake more than the flatlands. The simulated quake runs 20 seconds but here in livermore the ground shakes for a minute and a half because of the soft sediment on top of bedrock. We have motions capable of damage here. For building not built for it like in the south napa quake. Engineers will design the structures to make them resilient. Abc 7 news. Police in lancaster, pennsylvania are having the last laugh.
