Reaching those goals. Our diana olick has some new ways to get fit. Its covery stor story exerc a new fitness trend every other minute, from hightech fitness gaming to aerial yoga, but for whats seeing the biggest growth, really, the old is new again. Aerobic activity, cross training, highintensity interval training, and good old stair climbing all saw the biggest growth last year, that according to the Sports Fitness industry association, which surveys core fitness enthusiasts annually, those who say they work out 50 times a year. This benefits crunch fitness, planet fitness, and anytime fitness. One surprise, though, boot camp style workouts fell out of favor bit. This is as barrys boot camp embarked on a big expansion last year. Orange theory, which could also be considered boot camp style, is also expanding aggressively. As for the highpriced boutique trend . Boutique is growing, and what weve seen is the millennial customer in particular just wants to see different kinds of options, so they may join one or two kinds. Whats helpful to the boutique is the economy being stronger and the ability for people to pay. A one of the biggest names in the boutique category, peloton is taking a big risk this year, moving beyond the home cycling model to a hightech treadmill. So, it looks like a pelotons great only ginormous. A new screen, a new product, a big move for peloton, the selfproclaimed Media Company which doubled its annual revenue last year to 400 million. The belt is made of 59 individual flaps. Its a 4,000 hightech, live, interactive treadmill. Im feeling that it the treadmill markets five times bigger than the bike market. We also listen to our members, and they said, you know, we asked them what they would want, and they said a boot campstyle circuit trainin workout where its full body would be a nice complement to the peloton bike. We dont want the peloton bike or the treadmill to be the hero. Its more about the consumer as the hero. Repor its all part of a Strategic Plan that includes new apparel, new accessories, and more new products ahead. For on the money, im diana olick in new york. In addition to exercise, Healthy Eating is a big par g fit. For help with that, americans spend about 2. 5 billion a year on diet plans. Monty sharma is ceo of jenny craig, the weight loss and nutrition company. And monty, thank you for being here today. Thank you for having me here. We just heard about the exercise crazes, how people are spending more and more money on that, how they are spending more and more on diet plans. And yet, 40 of americans are obese at this point. Whats happening . Where is the disconnect . I think people are generally aware that they need to get healthier, and in orde to get healthier, you have to lose weight. So i do see that these numbers will get better over time, just because more people are paying attention to them and doing something about them. Its hard to stay on these plans. I understand that. Its hard, when you have so many things aroun you all the time that look so tempting, its hard to do these things, but who is coming to customer, and what do they want when they show up . Our customer is typically a 35 to 50yearold female client. We have made great inroads in the last year to include men as well, and a lot of men have also joined, but they are coming to jenny craig because they have traditionay not had success with the programs that theyve been on. Not their fault. They have a lot going on in their lives. Typically, people have 30 pounds or so to lose, and they come to us because they need our help in getting them there, and thats what we do differently from anybody else, because what we do is to make a commitment to you that we will get you to your weight loss goal, and we take it very seriously. Whats different, though, if i go to weightwatchers or nutrisystem . E different foods and diet plans i can stick with. You have frozen foods and also offer counseling. The difference is the oneonone support we give you. That is the key difference, where we pair you with your own dedicated consultant, and their job is to get to know you, to get a relationship with you and to trust you so that we can begin to understand what is driving those behaviors. Were mostly about behavior modification. Yes, we have naturally frozen foods that we offer, and that is a get you to your weight loss goal, but most importantly, we want you to have a healthy relationship with the food, and that can only happen if you can change your behaviors. Is that in person o done incre over it is done in person. You have greater success when youre in person, but its also available for those that cannot do it, you can do it online, and you can also do it over the phone. So, how much does the program cost, and how long do most people stay in the program . So, most people would stay in our program for about six months, if you 30 pounds to lose. The amount of time you need for you to change your behaviors is going to take about that long, so people are staying with us for six months and getting it off and then learning all the techniques to keep it off. What are the percentages of people who keep that weight off . Most everybody that comes in to jenny craig, we are, again, very focused on making sure you reach your weight loss goals. And then sometimes life happens and you go off track and you come back then because you trust the brand, so we think our mission of being very serious about taking weight loss and being upset about the fact that people have spent so much time and resources on other programs and not been successful and not seen success. We take it very seriously. Is this the busiest time of the year for you, new years resolution time . New years resolution is busy, but you tend to get folks that have just a few lesser pounds to lose. In weight loss, we see a very consistent flow in folks throughout the course of the year. The summertime is the only exception. So all months like february, march, april are all good months, september, october are also great months for us, because the decision to lose weight when youre overweight comes at different points in your life. Theres a trigger in your mind about ive got to do something about it now, and that doesnt always happen in january. Monty, thank you so much for your time. Thank y so much for having me her now heres a look at whats making news as we head into a new week on the money. Thats what author mike lewis explores in his new book. Its called when to jump. Mike, thanks to thank you so much talk about. Your story is amazing. You had a great job in finance at bing capital, but there was something all the time you felt you should be doing, so you quit your job to become a professional athlete, a professional squ player. What happened and what did that experience teach you . Well, you know what, it star earlier. We moved to santa barbara, california, as a family. And there was probably one club within 100 miles that had the only courts, and i fell in love with it. And the squash tours not very well known, but you can circle the globe playing it. You can play every in the world, playing squash. So i thought at some point, im going to do this. The trouble is, theres no knock on the door no good time. Yeah. No ones going to come in and say, hey, now you can go chase your dream. Ten years later, i realized two things. I was working in finance at bing capital, and i knew, one, that voice in my head was never going to go away, and number two, no one was going to tell me when to go do it. So i looked online and since i search of when to chase your dreams, i started to reach out to other people to find out what happened when they left to do something they cared about. This sounds like a one in a million shot, like winning the lottery, when youre successful. What did you find and what were the stories and what did you learn . The first woman left wall c she made the olympic th gritt l. And from were open. On e bus, bartender down the street, the receptioni at work. Im a riskaverse person. I would probably be afraid to do it, if you have kids, if you have responsibilities. E there times that its a little riskier . You might not be ready to jump today, but you can. D i dont believe if you have kids or a mortgage or student debts to pay back, today is the time to jump, but that doesnt mean you cant jump in a year or two years. We go through in the book of how do you get closer so when that time comes, youre ready to go. You have one of your phases is phase four, dont look back. But have you ev played that mental game, what if, what if i didnt . The phase before that is to let yourself be lucky. So when you jump, be open to opportunities, and the reason i say at the end dont look back is that, we only go through life once. You know, this is the time to take chance when you feel like youve prepared. And when you do, you cant look around or behind or in front of you and say what could have been, because you only get one shot at this. Thats good life advice, no matter what you end up doing.
