Police in the south bay just released this Surveillance Video, hoping it will help identify a crew of teenagers who burglarized homes in campbell. Janine della vega has the story. Reporter this Surveillance Video was taken around 10 00 in the morning. You see several teenagers casually walking one by one behind each other in this campbell neighborhood. Vince cortezs wife saw some of them at a neighbors house. My wife was walking the dog, and as she came down the street, these four young men came briskly out of the backyard through the gate. One guy said, were supposed to meet a friend here and came up with some cock and bull story that didnt make sense. Some say theres still more to do when it comes to knowing who is behind the wheel. Also, who is getting hit hardest by the new gas tax, plus today state regulators approved new rules for the background checks required for uber and lyft drivers. Abc7 News ReporterJonathan Bloom explains whats changing and why some people are still not happy. Reporter the military does not allow uber and lyft drivers onto their bases. Do you know why . Because they dont get fingerprint background checks. The state Public Utility Commission grappled with a delicate balance. Reporter advocates argue it hurts minorities and could delay a desperately needed paycheck. Left waiting for weeks and even months without earning an income. Reporter but regulators knew something had to be done. Last year, uber settled a lawsuit over drivers with criminal histories its background checks missed. If you have a fingerprint background, the fact that they were arrested and convicted would show. Reporter commissioners drafted a compromise. Stricter rules that disqualify drivers for rape, murder, and kidnapping, even if its more than seven years ago, and require new background checks every year. Previously there was no requirement for updating the background check. A driver would be checked during the platform and that was it. Reporter the commissioners did a Public Survey and found the same thing we did, on the issue of fingerprints, riders are evenly split. Fingerprints, i mean, why not . Its safety. No, i dont think they should be fingerprinted. Why not . Doesnt really seem necessary. In the end, it was unanimous. Reporter the commissioners approved the rules without fingerprints. Uber said theyre encouraged by the decision which promotes Public Safety and opportunity. Lyft said it recognizes the strength and effectiveness of our current background process.
