Santa cruz mountains getting light to moderate rain as well. Over the next few hours, definitely expect the rainfall to continue to spread across the region so the south bay will start to see that rain as well. Here is a very wet view from our kgo roof camera and this is likely what were seeing along with hearing the wind gusting to 23 out of the south and mountain view, 25 at sfo out of the southeast and look at the hilltop winds. Ght now, spring valley, 39, mount tam, 34, ive seen those winds over 40 miles an hour. This is a level one system. Rainfall between 15 100 to 1 inch. There is a possibility of seeing some issues in the recent burn areas if the rainfall intensity continues. Debris flow might be a concern. Today is the onemonth anniversary of the start of the most destructive fire storm in california history. This time a month ago, much of the north bay was burning. Lets take a look back at how it all began. Reporter small fires fueled by extreme winds merged into six massive fires, burning more than 200,000 acres, destroying 8,900 structures, and killing 43 people. The three biggest fires were in sonoma and napa counties. The official state incident reports show they started within 15 minutes of each other from 9 45 to 10 00 p. M. On sunday, october 8th. By midnight, fires were also burning in mendocino and lake counties. The pocket fire broke out at 3 30. It would take 23 days before all of the fires were contained. And who can the forget this poignant video, probably the most salient image for me, abc7 crews got of the evacuation of patients. Kaiser hospital reopened on october 25th. More than two weeks after the unprecedented closure. The nearby medical offices reopened on october 16th. But what a dramatic, profound image that was of medical professionals evacuating patients with flames burning behind them. Well, the north bay fires decimated the busiest part of the fall tourist season in wine country, but Sonoma County is trying to get the word out that the vast majority of their Tourist Attractions are untouched. Abc7 news anchor eric thomas has that story from sonoma. Reporter you can still see the burn scars on the hillside surrounding the winery in glen ellen and although the flames came very close. The vineyards are fine and they acted as a natural fire block. Reporter thats probably why only three of Sonoma Countys 113 wineries were affected by the fire and two of them are close to reopening. But business really suffered during and immediately after the fires. It was dead. Dead. Right now, theres a concerted effort to really rebound from what happened over the last several weeks. Reporter johnny is executive director of the Sonoma Valley visitors bureau. He says theres a lot of hard work to do. In some areas, occupancy has dropped by as much as 18 . And a lot of the occupancy thats returned is with evacuees and people from fema. Reporter thats one consequence of the fires turning thousands of homes into cinders and forcing thousands of people to look for scarce housing. But general manager brian at sonomas El Dorado Sonoma hotel says there is reason for optimism. Our skies are blue. Air quality is back to normal. And we just want to show our bay area friends and our tourists that people are coming back. Reporter and so are bookings at the el dorado, slowly but surely. They dont have firm numbers yet but the wineries say theyre seeing it too. Were happy to see that a lot of our supporters in the larger bay area are starting to come back to show their support for the wineries throughout the wine country. Were very grateful. Reporter gratified but not satisfied, thats why sonoma tourism officials plan to launch an ad campaign in the near future to convince bay area tourists to come back. He said her shooting on pier 14 in San Francisco appears to have been accidental. Abc7 was there for day 11 of the trial. Reporter a canadian firearms expert with vast knowledge in unintentional discharges testified that firing a single shot like Jose Inez Garcia did is a sure indication of an accidental shooting. The reason, he said, is that someone with a motive or intention typically ends up firing multiple shots. A single shot, single action gun, its a fully loaded weapon, i mean, it has all the physical characteristics of an accident. Reporter the expert was brought in by the defense and paid 250 an hour to testify. With that disclosed, alan voth was then asked to give his opinion on how the bullet could have ricochetted. The expert said if the bullet hit the pavement then traveled another 78 feet before striking kate steinle, its another indication that the gun discharged unintentionally. He also insisted that most Law Enforcement officers make sure their gun is unloaded when stored. The gun used to shoot steinle was stolen four days before along the embarcadero. John, who works for the bureau of land management, testified that the gun was fully loaded, and today, the officer who took his statement recalled that wotowski never reported a second magazine stolen. The steinle family is suing is bureau of land management. The Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office is raising the stakes to capture two escaped inmates. Mcclou and john bivens ran from Court Tuesday morning. They were facing lengthy prison sentences for armed robbery. Allocating 25,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of these two people. And we hope that that will have people who know where they are call us. Officials say the inmates smuggled in a handcuff key and used it to get out of their restraints. In a hallway, they broke away, went through an emergency exit and got into a waiting car. Two accomplices have been arrested. The escapees are considered dangerous. A state judge has recommended that pg e be allowed to raise electricity rates to pay for the costs tied to the planning planned closing of the states last operating Nuclear Plant. If approved, the plant to close, the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant is expected to add a few pennies to your bill. Pg e wanted tens of millions more. And we are revisiting a neighborhood in the fire zone where we saw the destruction play out live, reducing a home to absolute rubble while just a few feet away, another home stood untouched by the flames. Laura anthony reconnected with a family whose house was spared. Reporter you feel lucky but sad at the same time. Terry and bonnie told us they were watching. Couldnt take their eyes off of it. That monday morning, exactly one month ago when their silverado neighborhood went up in flames. Its just indication of whats going on all over this neighborhood. Reporter as we were reporting live, the atlas fire was still raging through silverado highlands, completely assuming the house next door. That was really just just so despondent. I was screaming at the tv. Like i could do something. Reporter as hard as it was, the couple kept watching. From the safety of their daughters house in San Francisco. And they were astounded to see a fire crew standing by to save their home. What you see right now are firefighters trying to protect the home that is to the left of it. Then you guys panned the camera to our house and we all broke out in tears. And our children our grandchildren were there and my daughter was there, and everybody was like in tears in their eyes because our house was saved. I want to thank the firefighters. They saved as much as they could and we all got out. And while they are certainly grateful that their family treasures survived, they are also painfully aware that so many of their neighbors, their best friends, lost so much. As their neighbors begin their rebuilding process, like their home, they want them to know theyll be standing tall for them. Today, the city of santa rosa gave the allclear at journeys end mobile home park. The park was red tagged last friday over concerns about hazardous materials. Asbestos was found in the parks laundry room area. The epa got it all cleaned up ahead of schedule and people can now return. Drone view 7 shows you the damage this park suffered. Just incredible. 140 of the 160 units here were gutted in the tubs fire and two residents lost their life. The Vice President s visit came as more information emerged about how a man with a violent past was able to obtain weapons. A military court convicted devin kelley on Domestic Violence charges while he served in the air force and the air force didnt notify the fbi about kelleys criminal history. His name never appeared on any list of people barred from buying guns. We will find out why this information was not properly reported in 2012. For some firefighters, battling the north bay fires was like nothing they had ever done before, and i sat down with santa rosas fire chief and a pair of captains to get a hi there, im from morgan hill, california. I just wanted to call and thank all of the First Responders. I really, truly believe that firefighters, police officers, nurses, doctors, everybody is gods angels here on earth. It has not gone unnoticed the entire community, california, i think country, and fair to say the world has seen your blood, sweat, and tears. Thank you. The flames obliterated entire neighborhoods as you know and i had the opportunity to sit down with the santa rosa fire chief and two captains to take a look back at that fateful night and the days that followed. Youve fires in your time. Chief, have you ever seen a fire like this . Nothing like this. Ive been to a lot of fires, both in the city and outside of the city, and nothing compares to what we saw that night. In those first few hours of sunday night, october 8th, no one could know what was coming. First, a few sparks and small fires. But once the wind picked up, there was a gut feeling that it could get bad. The glow the chief saw from a hilltop was ominous. We do have fire come into the city. Not sure where it is and im not sure how bad its going to be but its coming our way. Reporter it sure was. Faster than anyone could have imagined. The wall of fire traveled two miles in just one hour. Fires were popg up everywhere, grass and trees on fire here, homes on fire there, places like coffee park, then a hospital in lark field. Thats when it hit home for fire captains jack thomas and jason jenkins. That really got to me, because i realized the community that i lived in, that ive been here forever, was burning down. I mean, this is what youre trained to do, obviously, jason, but do you get a little knot in your stomach when you realize this is big . You know, im used to going to these type of incidents, but theyre much smaller scale. But when its in your own neighborhood, the seriousness of it, the impacts that are longlasting, you realize how devastating its going to be and you i realized that pretty early. Reporter flaming debris the size of dinner plates being thrown around by the wind, starting new fires. There were reported, you know, hurricaneforce winds, fire tornados in the coffey park area. There were things that really shocked us the next morning looking at that where there was a vehicle upside down, you know, 100 feet into the park. Reporter by sunrise, we all saw just how bad the fire was. A month later, its still jarring. When you walk those neighborhoods, what do you think . Its hard to recognize. The images that go through your mind in regards to if a nuclear bomb went off, there are certain portions of this fire where it looks like that. Reporter but as bad as this disaster was, it could have been much worse. So many lives were saved because firefighters, police, and ordinary folks got people out of bed and out of danger. If it wasnt for the actions that they took, there would be many more lives lost and still we lost way too many lives. Reporter firefighters tell at the me that they have been overwhelmed by the Community Response to this disaster. Were also tracking another fire right now. At first there was nothing and then we saw the smoke and then slowly we saw all the flames coming up over the mountain. Fire is everywhere. It has made a hard push into santa rosa. We have people here who are in shock and then we also have people here who have snapped into action. Let me get her feet. All around me, there are Emergency Responders from different agencies. All of a sudden youd see smoke start to billow out from underneath the house. They saved my house. These guys are just spectacular. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of homes gone. This is just very, very sad to see. Its Mother Nature at her worst, i guess. This fire is advancing, it is growing right now. Sadly, we have found another neighborhood that has been completely wiped out. The sun is setting on a day of utter devastation. That fire came here like a speeding train sunday night. More than half of it is gone just reduced to burned, chard, rubble. Along with grief and fear comes uncertainty. Lot better progress today. Settled down overnight and that gave us a big opportunity to catch up. It looks horrible now but this is really a beautiful spot and it will grow back and our homes will come back and well, you know, well remember this day forever. It just breaks your heart. A.
