Its unclear what caused that big rig to catch fire. Now lets give you a live look at the toll plaza. This has been the scene all day. Lines, lanes filled with cars trying to get into San Francisco traffic on 80 right now. Backed up all the way to pinole. Were going to keep an eye on both of these traffic situations throughout this evening, and we will keep you posted. The Big Name Company that plans to move into San Franciscos union square, or Sergio Quintana, fills us in and finds out what this means for business in the city. And what would memorial day be without bottle rock . The big festival kicked off today. We check in with our Jodi Hernandez about the big bands and celebrities coming to napa valley. The Graduation Ceremony had just wrapped up today. Police say the shooting was not random. The 40 niners and the city of santa clara have reached a settlement in their long standing legal battle over levis stadium. This is the last in a string of disputes between the city and the team over many years. This one deals with who should pay for police and for food during 49ers games. Health care advocates say impending closures at a busy San Jose Hospital could spell disaster, and they are calling on attorney general rob bonta to intervene. Protesters gathered at san joses Regional Medical center in East San Jose today. This comes after the corporation that owns the hospital announced the upcoming august closures of several critical programs. The lists include the hospitals trauma center, as well as the program that treats patients with cardiac arrest. Regional medical serves 25 of all traumas in the county, and Health Advocates warn this is a life or death situation. This isnt just about a closure of a trauma center, a stemi unit or comprehensive stroke services. This is about the lives and wellbeing of our families, friends and neighbors. Regional Medical Center responded with a statement saying its investing millions of dollars into its growing emergency department. The statement also said, in part, we are responding to the patient care needs of our community so we can continue to care for our communitys health for the long term. Most are moving out, but one retailer is moving in. We are talking about San Franciscos union square. Lets bring in our Sergio Quintana live in San Francisco, sergio nordstrom, saks off, fifth north face, many more have already left. Soon macys will be gone, but mario, luigi, princess peach, theyre coming to San Francisco. When is this happening . Yeah. So you know, when i think of nintendo, this is the theme that i immediately think of. Super mario brothers, right. Thats like the original. Of course, theyve had so many more hits since that original. But nintendo coming to San Francisco is a big deal for union square, especially now the nintendo stores, their kind of interactive stores. You can go in there, you can play with some of the you play some of the games. Of course, you buy them as well. But nintendo only operates four Standalone Stores in the world. Three of them are in japan, one of them is in new york city. And that store in new york city opened in 2005. So janelle, when this store opens in San Francisco, 2025, its going to be 20 years since they opened that new york city outlet. So kind of a big stretch of time as well for nintendo to be doing Something Like this in the united states. Its a big deal. And you spoke with someone with the citys office of economic and workforce development. How big of a win is this for the city of San Francisco . Well, you named a few of the places that have gone since a lot of the big names. Unfortunately, since the pandemic, union square really has been seeing a lot of the retailers leaving a lot of the traditional retailers, especially some of them long time retailers in the city, there is a Research Firm that has compiled data on the number of retailers that have left union square since 2020, Something Like 40, according to their figures. But unfortunately, that list has grown since because we know that macys is soon going to be closing. And then theres a theres a Jewelry Store schreven company thats also going to be closing. So for the city to have an outlet like nintendo coming to union square, its a big deal. They say they recognize that union square is transforming and nintendo is a big will be a big part of that transformation. And its going to be nice to be interactive. So it will bring in draw families to as well to San Francisco, Sergio Quintana live at union square. Thank you so much. Now lets go live and take a look at sfo this afternoon, where travelers are packing airports ahead of memorial day weekend. And earlier today we were at san jose airport, a busy day for air travel. The tsa estimates nearly 3 million passengers are expected to pass through airport checkpoints. One couple says they beat the lines, but dont expect the same luck for everyone. But im surprised that right now i dont see as many as i expected to see in the airport. People itll get busy. I know that the number of travelers today is suspected to rival the record set on the sunday after thanksgiving last year. Well if you are going to stay in town, expect cooler temperatures. I noticed quite the change today. I had to pull out a coat. I know it was a day of layering for sure in most of us now. This is what the temperatures look like right now. So were in the 50s in San Francisco. Notice san jose 65. Keep in mind earlier this week we were in the 80s. So we got a sneak peek of summer. And now were certainly much cooler. So how much cooler are we running compared to the past 24 hours . Well, how about 19 degrees compared to yesterday in areas like concord 16 degrees cooler in livermore . Check out san jose and morgan hill over ten degrees cooler so that cooler air is certainly going to keep us a little bit below average into the weekend. But youll also notice weve got more cloud cover out there. And also it increased onshore flow. Now, what thats doing is thats actually kicking up our winds. You can see a system just to our north there. So wind speeds have been gusty throughout the afternoon. And we can expect to keep 20 plus mile per hour winds in through tonight. Well see some of these winds begin to back off a bit more heading into your saturday forecast. So lets take a look at how the impact will be for our saturday temperatures. So far. We are going to be seeing upper 50s low 60s in San Francisco. So another day where you definitely want to wear a sweater out and about tomorrow, even inland areas, were only going to max out in the upper 60s, low 70s. By the time we get to your sunday forecast, we are going to be running a few degrees warmer, so the cooldown is going to last into saturday before we start to see a gradual warm up yet again, a couple of low 80s into areas like the tri valley. But even so, notice San Francisco down to the south bay. Were going to be in the upper 60s low 70s. I did have some viewers ask me about tahoe. It is going to be beautiful up there. Its about 59 degrees right now. I think the most issues will probably run into is likely the memorial day traffic, but the weather up there will be stunning. Make sure to join us once again at 5 00. Chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is going to have a closer look at your extended outlook. Janelle, are the weather in tahoe is basically the weather here right now . Were all in the 50s. Thanks, deanna. The weather may not be as warm, but that actually might be a good thing in wine country as people will be dancing the weekend away at Bottlerock Napa valley. They dont want to overheat right . The popular festival kicked off today. Lets bring in our Jodi Hernandez live in napa and jodi, some big names have arrived. Who is performing . Oh, there are so many big names performing. And ill tell you, the vibe out here is absolutely festive. People are pumped to be here and theres so much out here for people to enjoy. You can see the silent disco behind us now. Its been several years since ive personally covered this festival and its better than i remember. People are having an absolute ball from the silent disco people grooving to 80s music through headphones to the indoor club where festival goers are partying it up to dj mixes and lights. Of course, the bands are the Main Attraction and what an incredible lineup we saw. Indie rock musician pete yorn performing on the big stage this afternoon, as well as tiktok sensation boy with uke, and the weather really does seem perfect. Sunny but not too hot a light breeze. So people are definitely happy about that. The headliner tonight that nearly everyone we talked to today seems excited about stevie nicks hitting the main stage at 815 and Megan Thee Stallion on the verizon stage, also at 815. And this is just day one. Janelle i know ed sheeran, pearl jam, theyre all coming and its not just music. Steph curry, the warriors superstar, and Bradley Cooper the actor. Theyre going to be there as well. Why are they there . Well, yeah, bottlerock isnt just about music. Its about the food and drink too. After all, we are in the napa valley. Its a foodie region known for the food, so some of the regions best restaurants are out here. They have food booths, but a favorite attraction are the food demonstrations. And that is where steph curry and Bradley Cooper come in. They are among the stars that will be cooking it up on the williamssonoma culinary stage. Shell be teaming up with celebrity chef jose andres. Hes hes so great, and thats going to happen tomorrow. We also hear that theyre going to be making philly cheesesteak steaks and a bourbon pairing. Yum. Now right now, actress cameron diaz, cofounder of a wine business and also a big star is on that culinary stage right now with nelly creating something delicious, im sure, and drummer motley crew will also be taking the culinary stage to whip up something tasty as well. So, so much going on this weekend. Perfect weather, perfect vibe, so much fun. Back to you. Yeah, jody, i know youre married, but this guy behind you has been dancing, showing off his moves. I think he wants you to join him. So lets go. Go enjoy yourself. Jody. Thanks so much. Live from bottle rock. Okay thanks. Making a difference through an app. Valerie joins us to show us how you can use your phone to help fight our climate in crisis. Also rowing to paris. Not literally though. The cal coach whos already making an impact at this summers olympics. Our ian cull, introduces us to him. But before we head to break, we want to know what trending story you would like to see later in this newscast. Ima pull up right now on my instagram stories. You still have some time to vote for one of these three. A World War Two submarine found 3000ft underwater. Advertisers boost their spending at retailers and so long to stumpy. Wee going to tellr like us, possibly to better understand environmental trends. Joining us now is our meteorologist, vianney arana. And vianney. Its called Citizen Science. What is that . Well, think of it like this. Its enthusiastic people we like to call here at nbc bay area, like our weather watchers, are people that send us images of the sky, things like that. But now whats happening is, is that those images that are captured, the information that is captured from the general public, is being used by scientists to further research in things like special projects. So a recent study by Scripps Oceanography looked at how effective Citizen Science info is compared to, lets say, the traditionally structured survey data. They focus on volunteer scuba diver observations using two methods the reef volunteer fish survey project, where people actually dive in to capture data, and a noaa fish population survey. Now, i spoke with one of the lead researchers, and he says that he was quite pleased by the info he found and ultimately, what we found is that the citizen scientists that werent paid to collect data, they just collected data over the course of their normal diving recreation, actually generated very, very powerful information. And to such an extent that the information we gathered from those Citizen Science data were comparable in terms of their quality to what federal scientists were generating. You heard him mention their quality. Now, a lot of this dates back to about 30 years. Now, if you to have an interest in helping, all you need to do is use your smartphone. Now theres a Global Project called coast snap. Thats what youre seeing on your screen there. It originated in australia in 2017, but it has a number of locations throughout, including the scripps campus in san diego. They use the photos that you take to better understand how the coast is changing due to storms, sea level rise, and of course, human activity. And were hoping that the bay area is next as far as the location for that particular project. But he also shared with me a number of websites that you can visit. For example, lets say you enjoy watching birds and you like taking photos of birds. There is a citizen scientist application for that where you can download your photos. And of course here at nbc bay area, always tag us in your sunrise photos. Your storm photos. We greatly enjoy them. We also use them to verify the information, right . We could say hey, look so and so lives in sunnyvale and it is raining outside their door that is verified forecast, so we always greatly appreciate it. Yeah, the more data the better. Absolutely. I guess all the links to if you want to, well include them in the climate and crisis tab along with this story okay. Thanks vinny. Got it. A major milestone in the mission to connect los angeles to the bay area by bullet train. The California High Speed Rail Authority has completed its final environmental report. It will submit the plans to the authoritys board of directors for approval next month. The hope is to obtain complete environmental approval to build between the two cities. If approved, the authority will begin phase one of a 400 mile section. Phase one is Antelope Valley to the san fernando valley. Now to our coverage of the 2024 olympics. The cal mens rowing team will try and win its Third StraightNational Championship next week, and the program has a long, storied history, which it hopes to add on to at the olympics this summer in paris. Nbc bay areas ian cull joins us now. And ian, you spent this morning with our coach. He is no stranger to the olympics and his cal bears will be well represented at paris. You bet. And you know, after a few qualifications this week, theres going to be nine current or former cal rowers who will be heading to the olympics. Three are current students who have taken the past year off to train the others are alumni and two will represent the u. S, while others are rowing for their countries of australia, new zealand, serbia, the netherlands, switzerland and italy. I caught up with the mens rowing coach scott franzen, who has coached all of them at one point. These nine guys were the, you know, the leaders of our team and for them to see them moving on to that International Stage and getting their chance to write their own olympic stories is pretty cool. Ian, we know bay area university, stanford and cal have a history of producing olympians, but the Rowing Program here is just extremely successful. Yeah, i mean, theyve produced 72 olympic rowers and won 35 medals and some of the first ones go back 100 years back then, the Top College Team in the country went on to represent the u. S. In the olympic games. Cal won three gold medals during that time. Now, franzen himself is one of the most decorated oarsmen in cal rowing history. He is a three time olympian who won silver in beijing in 2008 for team canada. So i asked him what he will be sharing with the guys going to paris. A lot of people get there and they get distracted by all the free food or the fact that youre in the village and with all the, you know, the 10,000 best athletes in the world. And thats thats a really cool achievement, but youre still there to race and go as fast as you can. Yeah. So its an exciting time for that program, whos not only gearing up for paris but for nationals next week. And youll see more coming up in our full story at 6 00. Well be cheering them on for sure. Thanks, ian. Well see you at six. Exciting to watch. Yes. The famous submarine that has been found 80 years after it sank during World War Two. Take a look at a 4d model of the uss harder. Our mike inouye spoke with the host of the concert tony award winner joe montana and gold star father alan ho. I never feel more alive than when im on that stage doing that concert every year because its not an acting job, its im recounting history and a very important history and like the story, alans story and the story of about him and his son and his family.
