Thanks for watching, we love you. [ cheers and applause ] right now, at 11 00, we are following breaking news in mexico. You can see this video almost doesnt look real. A stage collapses as though strong winds whipped the area. People running for their lives. This happened during a Campaign Rally in the wealthy enclave of san pedro garza garcia. This is near the city of monterrey, mexico. A mexican president ial candidate, Jorge Alvarez martinez, was on the stage when this happened. He is now in the hospital and says hes okay, but many others are not. At least four people are dead, 15 others injured are the top story. Tonight, a vta bus watched that video, by a passenger with a machete, and the bus driver tells us it felt like forever until help arrived when he pressed his panic button right there on the bus. The call first went to vta dispatchers and then to the Sheriffs Department. The driver says the delay could have cost him his life. Investigative reporter Candice Nguyen found agencies across the bay area have not been able to solve this problem. Look and listen closely. The interaction is quiet. This is Surveillance Video of vta operator carlos zarates bus being by a passenger with a 17 inch blade machete. I really cant make this trend, he told me, make this uturn or else youre going to start bleeding. When you saw that machete, what was going through your mind, zarate is speaking publicly for the first time about this may 2022 incident, sharing this part of the story not shown in the video, the young san jose father had a six month old baby girl at home. That was my biggest thing. Either getting hit with a machete and not my baby, being embarrassed of me later on, or or just not being here for her anymore. And at that point, its when i hit the panic button. Vta says its operations control center, or oc, data, shows zarate pressed his Emergency Alert button at 5 05 a. M, activating the bus microphone so dispatchers could listen in. A minute later, at 5 06 a. M, oc contacted the Sheriffs Office twice, i have an emergency alarm on one of our coaches. The dispatcher at the time doesnt appear to realize zarates life is in danger for this here conversation. Nothing. Just a loud conversation. Thats all im hearing. At 516, you hear the siren of the first sheriffs unit arrive. Both vta and the Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office say theyre proud of their individual response times. Vta says it responded in one minute at 5 06 a. M. When its dispatcher called the Sheriffs Office with a two minute gap thats unaccounted for. The Sheriffs Office said its call for Service Started at 508, and its deputy only took eight minutes to get on scene. But no one we found was considering how long zarate was actually waiting for help. A total of 11 minutes every second of that nightmare mattered, zarate says, when both he and the public were at risk. The person had told me to hit a car and i told them i couldnt, that i wasnt going to do it. And i told you to hit a car. Yeah on the 880 overpass, zarate managed to keep the suspect calm and walked off the bus without a scratch. But he says his injuries werent physical. Right now, being treated for ptsd and anxiety, a lot of mood swings. It sucks because i dont feel safe at home. Zarate is far from the only driver impacted by what he feels was an inefficient and delayed response. Bus drivers tell us when theyre not safe, passengers arent safe. We reported on the same issues with ac transit back in 2018. Its like scary to go to work. Ac transit bus driver Celestino Gonzalez says the agency hasnt fixed the problem. These hospital photos and her incident report show she was attacked last summer. She says it took 15 to 20 minutes for deputies to get to her. It just took forever for them to answer and im like, what are you guys doing . Ac transit refuses to confirm their response time, citing privacy policies. The Agency Spokesperson said when it comes to emergency responders, their system is engineered so that there is no requirement for a direct conversation with the bus operator. But for years, bus drivers have told nbc bay area when their life or a passengers life is at risk, they need a direct line to police. Some of these issues are not unique to any particular transit agency. Aston green is vtas chief of system safety and security with transit dispatch in oc, keeping track of their response times and the Sheriffs Office keeping track of its own response times. Whos adding those times together so that Board Members and the public can get a sense of the total time it takes for that bus driver to wait for help . Yeah. So there are two different systems, right . Like the Sheriffs Department is contracted with us. If there is a request specifically, we tend to do the analysis. Dont you think thats much more of an accurate reflection of how long that bus driver is actually waiting . No, i mean, our principle is for First Responders to get there as soon as possible, right. And so there are several ways that that communication can take place, like a passenger calling 911 or a driver using the radio. We asked green, what about tracking entire response times to report to vtas board of directors, which oversees vta . Are you also reporting response times both occ and sheriffs response times to the board . No. Our response is a report on the contract, scope of work with law enforcement, particularly their crime stats. Green says everyone is trying to make transit safer. Everybody. Societal issues are spilling onto systems, he says, and operators like zarate are heroes. I think his actions were heroic. I think what he did was in the best interest of the public. But what about the Driver Safety . Zarate wonders where public figures to and if we need help. I hope they could get to us. We dont have anything to protect ourselves. Zarates attacker was prosecuted and is currently serving a prison sentence. We reached out to several vta Board Members, and were waiting to hear back with the Investigative Unit. Im Candice Nguyen, nbc, bay area news. Thank you. Candice, if you have a story for our Investigative Unit or cam candice, you can call 888996 tips or you can visit our website nbcbayarea. Com. Slash investigations. You might have seen all the smoke. You might have smelled it all as well. A fire on the peninsula. Look at this prompted concerns all the way down into the south bay. This fire was at a scrap metal yard in redwood city, and it triggered alerts from several agencies. People told to close their windows and stay indoors. Nbcs Jocelyn Moran joins us in redwood city this evening, right along 101 with the very latest, jocelyn. Well, firefighters put out the blaze a few hours ago, but it was definitely a scary situation for people who live and work nearby, especially after seeing how big it got and then smelling the smoke. A fire that started at sims metal in redwood city sent plumes of smoke into the air, visible for residents and workers throughout the city. Manuel michael works next door and took this video. The smoke was about, id say, 100 100ft up to 70 to 100ft up in the air. And, flames as high as 30ft, he says. There will sometimes be small fires at the scrap metal yard, but nothing crazy. They get put out. But this one got his attention, as well as residents nearby. By the time the Fire Department department came there, there were flames or orange glow, about 40ft by 40ft by 40ft tall. It was amazing. John slater was on a bike ride when he noticed the fire. He stayed and watched. Ive been here for three hours. Im not willing to ride past that stuff and inhale that stuff. Its really bad for you. Id rather stay here for three hours and wait for the air to be cleaned. Agencies, including the bay area air Quality Management district, santa clara fire, the Sunnyvale Department of public safety, and Mountain View fire posted messages on x notifying people the smoke was moving south and recommending people who could be affected by the smoke to remain indoors. Well, its a little scary because of the smoke. And, you know, i thought, oh, this redwood city woman called her husband immediately and i told him to close all the windows. Do you have them open . He said yes. So close them all because hes got asthma. Really bad. In a statement, sims metal tonight says in part, quote, while still too early to confirm the cause of the incident, we are working with the redwood city Fire Department and local authorities to investigate. Now, we did see the bay area air Quality Management district out here. At one point. They said they expected air quality to be back to normal by this time. In redwood city, Jocelyn Moran an nbc bay area news. Jocelyn, thank you. Developing at this hour in the east bay, a power outage has left a big portion of the uc Berkeley Campus in the dark. He was the basis for the groups first three albums, including drops of jupiter. His family says that colin died after he slipped and fell in the shower while house sitting for a friend in belgium. Colin was 58 years old. As the bitter divorce continues between the as and the city of oakland, theres a major Sticking Point thats still unresolved. Whats going to happen with the coliseum . Heres a live look at the coliseum right there. This is that prized piece of real estate, which is in limbo today. Some progress. Oakland agreed to sell its half of the coliseum site to a black led investor group. But what about the as half of the coliseum . Heres nbcs gia vang. It is my privilege to say that the African American sports and Entertainment Group has agreed to the terms to purchase the city of oaklands share of the Oakland Coliseum. Yes thats 50 for a minimum of 105 million for the 112 acre property. The mayor says the potential sale to the African AmericanSports Entertainment group, or acg, will also help fill the citys budget shortfall. But she says, more importantly, the future of the coliseum complex, as envisioned, will include the development of thousands of much needed new affordable units and market rate housing, increased curated outdoor green spaces, commercial and retail spaces. Construction on that wont be able to start for an estimated 2 to 3 years, according to acg, and thats if all goes as planned. The City Council Must approve the sale. That should happen in a couple of weeks, and ayetsg says its working on making the deal whole, meaning negotiations are happening with the athletics, who purchased the other half from Alameda County in 2019, and even that could fall through pending a court case in september still. But ultimately, we believe that were on track to be able to have this site consolidated. So what can acg do after this announcement . It can start planning since oakland has land use rights and the group is with different versions of plans already in the works and with the understanding the site became a profitable venue for other entertainment when the professional teams left. We know that people want to come to the site to be entertained because thats evident in more disney on ice, more celine dion and more anita baker concerts. So weve been having a lot of those. So the site is there in every iteration of the site. The arena would stay, saying they plan to keep it a home for sports two, perhaps for professional soccer, as ayetsg also has a Cooperation Agreement with the roots soccer club. However, everyone underscored today any plans will ultimately be community driven. Its going to be developed to bring entertainment to anchor culture, to bring life and to let us thrive here in east oakland. In oakland, gia vang nbc, bay area news. Check this out. A ship with a famed history is sinking in the San Joaquin River delta. Its called aurora. Its a 293 foot ocean liner made in 1955, and it was actually the inspiration for the love boat. Sheriffs office says the ship has a hole and its causing it to take on water. Right now, its not clear what caused the hole. State environmental agencies are at the scene because the ship is also leaking diesel into the delta. The biggest priority is containing that leak. We want to make sure that theres no wildlife that gets injured during this. So far, we havent found any wildlife that has been affected by this leak. But then also the delta waterway is its recreation. We have boaters out here, we have swimmers out here, and we want to make sure that theyre not affected by this. Now, they dont know how much fuel has been released, but the u. S. Coast guard is expected to have the spill cleaned up in the next 4 or 5 days. All right. Lets turn our attention to our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. This is when the week before a holiday weekend, it always seems to go so slow. But what were getting there we are. Its thursday is just around the corner here. And eventually that weekend is going to get here. And we are already starting to see some big changes out here in the pacific right now. What were seeing happening is that hot area, High Pressure is moving more out towards pacific because of this system thats dropping down. So with that moving closer tomorrow, temperatures drop a few degrees and we still keep that sunshine. But again larger changes by this weekend. Let me show you more details right now on that microclimate forecast. And lets begin with tomorrow morning. We have low 50s. Just a chance of a little bit of cloud cover near the coastline. And also the bay. All in all, pretty easy start as you get going on that thursday morning forecast sounds good, right . Thursday 52 here in the east bay over to the north bay. Youre coming in at 50. Might need a little bit of a light jacket. Temperatures for tomorrow even though were going to drop it off 4 to 6 degrees. Were staying in such an enjoyable range here. Just a nice day to be outside 79 up towards napa, 66 in san francisco, 58. 5 moon bay. From that cooler ocean breeze back out to concord 80 degrees and san jose a have you at 76. So tomorrow we can totally handle that. But youre going to feel it. Youre going to notice it. And in a big way here. So we do think at this point, our temperatures on friday are going to be a little bit cooler than expected. Along with that, some cloud cover, even the chance here of some drizzle. And we are looking at on and off wind gusts here 15 to 45 on friday and saturday. Let me show you the hourly forecast. And when we could get some drizzle. I dont think its going to impact your plans this weekend because a lot of its happening overnight. So 4 a. M. Saturday into about 7 a. M. On saturday. Might see some spotty drizzle. Then by saturday afternoon into sunday and monday, lots of sun on the way. Look at these temperatures down to 68 in concord by saturday. And then a comfortable week headed our way next week. Now, when it comes to our national weather, weve been following this for weeks. More Severe Weather tomorrow. Highest risk of tornadoes in nebraska, but a large section of the eastern half of the u. S. Will have the possibility of strong storms right here in the 7day forecast. Wind picks up friday. A slight chance of that drizzle early saturday morning. The thinner ones are already banned here in california, but the proposed bills would only allow stores to offer paper bags or bags made of Recycled Materials for a ten cent fee. Supporters of the bill say that not enough is being done to curb plastic pollution in the state. Opponents say the bills would actually increase plastic use and cost families more money. Both bills now have to be passed by the senate and assembly before becoming a law. Okay, we all know that going to the dmv is usually a dreaded experience, but now we could see shorter wait times. Dmv says starting june 3rd is going to start requiring that certain transactions be done online. That said, its also more than doubling the Services Available online.
