Kaugt on camera, a just released video shows the man who appears to be Sean Diddy Combs repeatedly beating a woman in a hotel hallway. What were learning about what happened and the potential impact on the legal battle hes facing. Need off. Golf superstar Scottie Scheffler taken into custody on his way to the pga championship, the masters champ charged with assaulting a peace officer, how hes explaining what happened. Bringing down the house, a hearing on capitol hill devolves into total chaos. How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person . Are your feelings hurt . Move her words down. Oh girl, baby girl. Oh, really . Dont even play. What sparked it all and the reaction from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Going wild. Six flags gets ready to open its next great adventure, a first look at the brand new safari theme park where visitors can spend the night. Well, its certainly been a busy week, and thank you for ending it with us. Were starting this hour with the breaking news, disturbing new hotel Surveillance Video obtained by cnn appears to show the music mogul Sean Diddy Combs violently assaulting a woman who appears to be his then girlfriend singer cassie ventura. It took place in 2016 but the video was just released. A warning, the video is difficult to watch. The video shows the man believed to be combs running down the hallway of the Intercontinental Hotel in los angeles wearing a towel. He goes around the corner where a woman is waiting for an elevator. He grabs her, pulls her down to the ground and kicks her. He then grabs her bags, kicks her again, and pulls her bay her sweater, attempting to drag her back down the hallway. For more on this i want to bring in entertainment correspondent chloe melas, and legal analyst danny cevallos. Chloe, first to you, interestingly, cassie detailed something quite similar to this incident in a federal lawsuit and weve also heard from cassies lawyers, whats the latest on this . Her lawyers have come out with a very strong statement saying this is the evidence right here that they were talking about in their civil suit, that this is gut wrenching video that is only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of mr. Combs. They go on to say the words cannot express the courage and fortitude ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light. Its unclear who leaked the video. Its very unclear how this footage remained under wraps for so many years, since 2016. In this federal civil suit filed by cassie, Casandra Ventura who dated Sean Diddy Combs for over a decade, it details an incident that took place in 2016, at a hotel, in california, with very similar details to what were seeing in this video. Nbc news has not been able to independently verify that is Sean Diddy Combs in the video but it sure does look a lot like him and his legal team isnt saying anything right now and neither is the hotel. How was this video just released. As you mentioned its not yet been confirmed this is combs. Danny, if it is, how damaging might this be for him given the slew of other legal issues hes facing. If its diddy and if this happened in 2016, i originally was thinking of this in terms of straight assault and aggravated assault. Under state law theres a one or three year statute of limitations, for state law crimes they maybe be out of time. But under federal law, the Human Trafficking laws the statutes of limitations are much longer and were well within those statutes. This would be folded into a federal investigation if investigators were to determine if this alleged or apparent assault, of course if it is diddy, is part of a Human Trafficking investigation, which by the way, from just looking at the video, theres no indication one way or the other, but that might be something that federal investigators could possibly be looking at. And its important to go wide here, diddy was a big star of the early 2000s, and this is not the only legal case against him. I think of the federal investigation into him right now, so thats separate from this lawsuit, chloe, but whats the latest on that . So, we know that his homes were raided on both coasts, both on the east coast and florida and both in california, but we dont know what federal investigators found, he has yet to be charged with anything criminally. We dont know if they found anything and what is going to happen. What we do know is that Sean Diddy Combs has maintained his innocence, hes gone on social media repeatedly in the last few days talking about love, posting pictures of his family. He has presented himself as a family man, as somebody who supports women, who has helped individuals like mary j. Blige with their music career, he is somebody who has been revered in the music city, there have been runins with the law but nothing like this, there has never been any video footage showing him allegedly assaulting anyone. So this is a huge issue, and obviously were all waiting to hear from Sean Diddy Combs, from his attorneys who vehemently deny these allegations when the civil suit from Casandra Ventura was first filed a few months ago. And danny, the big news of the day, this video, if it is him or if its not, what does it mean, what are the legal repercussions for whoever that man is. The advent of security video that has taken cases that used to be he said, she said and made them much more objective, i mean, you could say the video for the most part doesnt lie. But, of course, if theres any charges that come from this, you maybe could argue it isnt me. That seems like a difficult one if facts show that it is, in fact, diddy, or that the statute has expired. If this is folded into a larger federal investigation its damning evidence even if theres no underlying charge for the actual assault. Danny and chloe, thank you. Turning to the deadly storms tearing across the south. Heavy rain and at times hurricaneforce winds left a path of destruction across texas and louisiana. In houston the winds were so powerful it blew windows out of downtown skyscrapers and even tore through the brick wall of this building. You see it right there. Its unclear if anyone was inside at the time, but across the region at least four people died. And nearly 2 1 Million People were left in the dark. Nbc news correspondent guad venegas is in houston for us. Guad, youve been out there all day talking to people, surveying the damage. Many of these people are just getting a chance to see the damage. Including the mayor. What did he tell you . Zinhle, surprise. The mayor and everyone else, when they come by and see this in person, theyre sprietzed that the damage that was caused. Just like they said they were surprised by the winds yesterday, now they knew, authorities knew there was a storm coming through but they didnt expect the winds to be so powerful. Weve seen the images of downtown buildings, the windows blown out, the streets in that part of downtown covered in glass and there was some flooding and there was a lot of damage to residential neighborhoods. Damage where trees damaged vehicles, theyve been covering the streets and then of course the power infrastructure. Thats something that has a lot of people worried because the damage that was caused to the infrastructure, the transmission lines, the towers, could take a long time to repair. When the mayor was here earlier today we talked about the power, and this is what he had to say. I think you mentioned you lost power as well . Yeah, i dont have power at my house. It was a real wakeup to me, to try to turn the lights on this morning, and realize, hey, and i cant even fix my coffee. So, you know, im living the life that houstonians are but theres people a lot less fortunate than me. Reporter the mayor also without power at home, and many others in the area that will have to wait for a lot of these repairs to be made. Again, it can take days, the judge, the Harris County judge said it could be weeks because of the amount of damage. Today they are still assessing that damage not just to the infrastructures but also the injuries. The major said theyve reported four people dying, but they are looking into a fifth case that perhaps of another person that might have died during the storm. Again, all of that still being assessed. Zinhle. Our condolences with those families and hoping people stay safe. Guad, thank you. It is the story that is shocking golf fans today, the number one player in the world is now facing a Second Degree felony charge. Scottie scheffler was arrested this morning after allegedly assaulting a police officer. It happened while he was on his way to play in the second round of the pga championship louisville, kentucky. He teed off just a few hours after being released from jail. Lets bring in nbc news correspondent elwyn lopez, tracking this one for us. Elwyn, can you walk through what happened this morning, and what are we hearing from scheffler at this point . Reporter zinhle, as you can see in the video its really dark, it was early in the morning, it was around 6 00 a. M. When all of this took place, there had been a fatal collision there, so, as you can imagine, heavy presence. And Scottie Scheffler was trying to get to the course for the second part of the tournament, so, as he was trying to do that, police say that an officer stopped him, that that officer gave him directions, and that Scottie Scheffler did not comply with those directions. Then they allege that he accelerated, dragging the officer grountd, the officer did suffer injuries and was transported to the hospital, what is interesting is what schefflers attorney is saying, hes saying this is all a big misunderstanding, that scheffler showed his credentials as he is told to do and that he tried to get into the course, and he also says that multiple eyewitnesses say that scheffler did nothing wrong, that he was complying with officers commands, in other words no assault on any officer by part of scheffler. So i want to read a little bit of what scheffler said in a statement. He says, quote, that it was a very chaotic situation, understandably still considering the tragic accident, that it occurred earlier, and that there was a big misunderstanding of what i thought i was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. So that is what scheffler is saying as of right now, we know that a lot of fans are supporting him, and in all after this we saw that people were wearing free scottie with shirts with his mug shot on it. A lot of back and forth, and hell be arraigned next tuesday. Thank you so much. For todays cnbc money minute, exiter is officially x. Were back with breaking news, the man convicted of attacking former House SpeakerNancy Pelosis husband in San Francisco has just been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. David depap was found guilty in his federal trial in november. In october 2022 he broke into the pelosis home and hit paul pelosi with a hammer, fracturing his skull. Steve patterson is following this for us. This sentence is lower than what prosecutors were asking more. What did we hear in court and have we heard any reaction from the pelosi family is this. Its a compromise. Lower than what prosecutors were pushing for but higher than the recommended guidelines, which would have been 25 years as recommended by the probation department. What it ended up with is 30 years, but of course lower than the 40 years that prosecutors were pushing for. Prosecutors really wanted this terrorism, essentially what amounts to a terrorism enhancement on top of this sentencing that was recommended. They were saying that not only did david depap knowingly strike paul pelosi with a hammer, in doing so he was trying to kidnap nancy pelosi. And in the charges, was obstructing, essentially, a public official from conducting her duties. They were also arguing on top of that, this was an intimidation of the federal government itself, that the actions that depap took were so heinous, and so bad that he was trying to obstruct and intimidate people from doing their job in the government. You know, obviously with sort of the compromise sentence we got i think the judge half agreed with that but didnt fully commit to that. We didnt hear what actually happened in court but we heard from prosecutors outside who said this lined up with somebody that essentially exited a very heinous act and they wanted to set the record and set a precedent for anybody that would do something similar in the future. Steve, this doesnt enend with the federal sentencing. Where a does that case stand . We know theyre going to do a jury selection coming up next week but there are five charges there, hes looking at another sentence, up to life in prison for that. Hes going away, no matter what. Zinhle . All right steve patterson, thank you. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is facing growing criticism for pardoning an army sergeant, murdering a black lives matter protester. Daniel perry was sentence today 25 years in prison last year for shooting and killing air force veteran Garrett Foster in austin a few months after George Floyds murder. Perry was released from jail within one hour of the governors pardon. Nbc news correspondent Marissa Parra is following this one. Reporter lets recap here, it was july of 2020. We know perry was working as an uber driver during a black lives matter demonstration there, and foster was part of a group of people who add approached this consider, and this, what im about to say is according to not to just perrys representation but also what we have seen from the interrogation video that has since been released. But perry said that foster approached him, and that he was armed, and they had pointed his gun at h im, all of his actions that followed were a matter of selfdefense. His representation has argued this falls under the umbrella of the stand your ground law. Now, since perry was sentenced last year to 25 years, we know that texas Governor Greg Abbott has faced pressure from conservatives to pardon him, and we know that the pardon board unanimously ruled to do that. Governor abbott vowed to sign the bard as soon as it hit his desk and thats what we saw here. Were hearing a lot from different people here, including the District Attorney jose garza who said the board and the governor made a mockery of our legal system, continuing on to say they have sent a message to Garrett Fosters family and his partner, and to our community that his life does not matter. Weve had a chance to briefly speak with fosters family, his mother says that she does not feel safe in this state of texas anymore, that she has lost faith in the legal system in texas, with perry now a free man, zinhle. Marissa parra, thank you, and you can catch more of marisas reporting including her interview with the mother of Garrett Foster tonight with lester holt. It marks the end of a year and a half long court battle. Our Ginger Conejero saab was inside the courtroom as the judge made her decision. The judge handed down his sentence for david depape, the man who is convicted of attacking paul pelosi. She handed down the sentence of 30 years in prison. Now there are two counts that david depape was charged with in this federal case. One is for attempted kidnaping that the judge gave him a 20 year sentence. And theres a second count that was a an assault on a Family Member of a federal official. He was sentenced to 30 years on that count. Now, both of those sentences will be served concurrently, which is why he will serve 30 years in prison. A big question for the judge this morning was how will David Depapes mental state play a role in his sentence, saying prosecutors made the case saying it was necessary to keep depape away from the public for as long as possible. Were showing you some body cam footage that was released from the attack, and this is why prosecutors are asking or were asking i should say, for 40 years that had an enhancement of terrorism. That was a longer sentence than what is usually recommended by the u. S. Probation Office Defense attorneys. However, ford depape this morning were making the case that depape has not had any prior record they were requesting for 14 years. They believe that that amount was significant. Also they made the case that this was not a murder case and he should not get the same sentence sentencing as it was now. Another really telling part of this morning was the daughter of nancy pelosi and paul pelosi. Read the victim impact statements from both her parents. Now, to some breaking news, the Israeli Military says its found the bodies of three israeli hostages in gaza. An idf Spokesman Says they were killed while escaping the hamas attacks on october 7. Right now in gaza the u. S. Military says trucks carrying humanitarian aid are starting to move in through its temporary pier. The aid is the first to enter gaza by sea in two months, however, humanitarian groups say its far short of whats actually needed. International correspondent Josh Lederman joins us now. I do want to start with breaking news about the bodies of those hostages who were found, what more do we know . Well, in a way, its sad to say this, zinhle, its not terribly surprising. We know that while israel estimated there were roughly 100 hostages in gaza, in addition to about 30 they believed were already dead there, that the number that is already dead is likely far higher than that 30, and so now we have learned that three of them have been recovered. They were all captured on october 7th as they were fleeing that Music Festival in Southern Gaza at kibbutz reim, two in their 20s, the families are preparing to bury them in israel, but certainly this is not creating anymore optimism that any of those remaining hostages will be brought home alive, given the fact that the ceasefire and hostage release talks appear to be at somewhat of a stand still at this moment, although in an attempt to try to keep some of that alive, that optimism alive, the white house does say it is sending National Security adviser Jake Sullivan to saudi arabia and then to israel in the coming days to work on a ceasefire talk, among other things. Josh, talking about humanitarian aid thats entering gaza through the floated pier we reported on earlier this week. How is that operation working and whats the status overall of getting aid into gaza by land. It hasnt really been getting in by land in nearly the numbers it needs to deal with the humanitarian crisis there in part because the rafah Border Crossing hasnt been opened and because Israeli Settlers have been attacking trucks making their way through israel. Thats why this new sea route is important. The aid gets staged in cypress and gets moved on big ships to a floating platform, a couple miles off the shore of gaza where it is then loaded onto smaller u. S. Navy vessels that bring it to a floating pier thats attached to the shore in gaza. Its supposed to be handed over to the u. N. And local aid groups to bring it to those who really need it. Important reporting, thank you. Turning to an nbc news exclusive, a group of top border officials are under new scrutiny over their ties to a wealthy businessman along the southern border. The home lance security Inspector General as well as cbps aufgs of professional responsibility are investigating whether the the chief jason owens have security correspondent Julia Ainsley joins us now. First off, explain to us who is Eduardo Garza and what are these Border Patrol officials accused of doing . Eduardo garza has a ranch in laredo, texas, as well as properties in mexico, and he is in the import export business, according to his companys website they advise clients who do international crossborder trade on things like tariffs and the best places where they can do trading, and go across these borders. Hes someone who stands to benefit financially from the policies and from the jobs being done by top cdp officials, those are exactly the kind of people that he wined and dined, we have found out about, five times. Three times at that ranch in laredo, and twice in mexico, including here when we introduced them to this tequila maker who said that he might make a Border Patrol tequila for the 100th anniversary. Why this matters is because generally people like garza are considered a prohibited source under federal ethics guidelines, and people are not supposed to be taking anything of value from them, and as we can see in the pictures and videos weve reviewed thats exactly what he provided them with. Really helpful context there, julia. Have we heard anything from Border Patrol or the officials being investigated . Well, as far as we know theyre telling us, just the investigation is ongoing, this is being investigated by the d. H. S. Inspector general as well as cdps own internal watchdog, the office of professional responsibility, a spokesperson says they still have confidence in their Senior Leaders but i will tell you, just late last night. Owens posted on x, he is cancelling a gala next week that was supposed to be for that Border Patrol centennial, that was sponsored by a lot of government contractors, so right now, the ethics and Border Patrol all under a lot of scrutiny. And julia, have we heard anything from Eduardo Garza . He told us late last night he did not pay for any of the travel or transportation for people, but he didnt have anything else to say beyond that. All right, Julia Ainsley, important reporting as always, we appreciate it, thank you. And were following the fallout today from a latenight capitol hill hearing that totally spiralled out of control. It was supposed to be about President Biden and the department of justice, but decorum disappeared once members of congress started hurling personal insults at each other. Capitol hill correspondent ali vitali joins us now. What happened here, and have lawmakers commented today about this incident . Yeah, a late night hearing, and zinhle, it didnt take long for it to go off the rails, its better for me to show you what happened than tell you. Ill let the lawmakers take it from here. Well, you are with the tun i think your fake eyelashes are messing up. Hold on, hold on. Order. Mr. Chairman please regain order of your committee. That is absolutely unacceptable, how dare you attack the physical appearance of another person. Are your feelings hurt . Move her words down. Oh, girl, baby girl. Oh, really . Dont even play. Baby girl . I dont think so. Were going to move and take your words down. I second that motion. Zinhle, baby girl, fake eyelashes, talking about each others iq, this is not the kind of thing that youre even supposed to do in congress, let alone we typically hear, but the chairman had pretty much squarely lost control at this point, and including when congresswoman crockett at the center of these exchanges tried this to try to understand, what was going to be actually kept in line here and what wasnt. Watch. Im just curious, just to better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee then starts talking about somebodys bleach blond bad built butch body that would not be engaging in personalities, correct . What now . Honestly, i was chairman raskin sitting right next to chairman comber there, watching the entire hearing, they did what they came to do, they passed the contempt referral, not that youd know it based on the headlines. Ali vitali, breaking down the breakdown on capitol hill, thank you. Thats your vibe, well valerie, thanks for bringing us that story. And coming up, well have an important conversation about recovering from trauma from someone who knows it firsthand. Dont go anywhere. Youre wching nbc news at in todays Mental Health check child abuse can have long term consequences affecting physical and Emotional Wellbeing well into adulthood. One in seven children, and the abuse can take on if m forms, including physical, emotional and sexual, as well as neglect. And heads up, some of the topics were about to discuss may not be suitable for young children. Joining me is sherry botwin, a sexual abuse survivor and trauma specialist and author of the new book stolen childhood, thriving after abuse. Thank you for being here. Thank you for having me. I truly believe theres power in sharing our own stories so thank you for being generous with yours, talk to us about your journey and what inspired you to write this book. I came from a very abusive family as a child. I survived over 20 years of childhood sexual abuse. What i did during my childhood is, i said to myself, you cant get out now, but some day, youre going to get out in the world, and youre going to tell your story, and that was what really helped me to keep fighting, to surviving, and then as soon as i got my masters in social work, i got myself into intense therapy, went to therapy three or four days a week for ten years, and im also a therapist. So the longer ive been in recovery and working with other people, the more i wanted to get the word out and say, theres so much hope that comes from recovery and healing after abuse. Its powerful to hear you say that. You talk about thriving in recovery, thriving through recovery, and whats your message to someone whos listening, saying thats me, i need to do something. Something that happens for people who survived abuse, they feel like they cant ask for help. I should be able to handle this on my own. I dont need any help. The way to thrive is to really begin to face our trauma, to let ourselves know what happened, to be able to understand the impact, and to say, you know what, theres so many things that i want in my life and in order to thrive, what do i need to do to be able to thrive and have what i want . And thats about making all of your dreams and accomplishments really come to life. Were talking about childhood abuse but the reality is, right, thats like the soil of life. Adulthood is us blooming, and often the consequences of that bleed into adulthood, and people might carry guilt or shame, how do you recommend they move fast that, through that . I think carrying guilt and shame is something we have to accept that were going to have to spend the rest of our lives working through that, to be able to look in the mirror, and say to ourselves, it wasnt my fault. I am worthy. I am lovable. I didnt do anything wrong. So really reminding ourselves, if we need to multiple times a day, im a good person, and i lost my childhood, but i want my adulthood, and why shouldnt i have that . What are actionable steps people can take . Their journey toward recovery . So you can go to therapy. For sure. But you can also do things like make a vision board, and put on that board the things that you want. I want to parent, i want to partner, i want to be successful in my job. Write those things down. Say to yourself, every single day, this is something that i can do, i am worth this, and i am going to keep fighting. And, you know, i mentioned some stats at the beginning, the reality is, many of us will pass people in our lives, or have people in our lives, who have experienced child abuse, how best based on your experience, going through it and now supporting people in it, how best can we support . What youre doing right now, youre sitting here, and youre listening, youre asking me questions, providing your loved ones a witness, saying im here for you. I may not understand some of what youve been through, but i love you, i believe in you, and im here. Thats really what loved ones can do, they can stand by us, and stay in a place of acceptance, and knowing that all is going to be okay. Really powerful message. Well sherry, its an honor to receive and witness your story, thank you for sharing it with our audience, we really appreciate it. Thank you. Yeah, thank you, dont go anywhere, a lot more news ahead, thank you for being with us, you are watching nbc news daily.
