Today talking to people about that new chaperon policy. Hes going to be joining us live in just a little bit. Were also tracking other stories on this thursday, including a University President now on leave. What he said about propalestinian protesters on campus that had sonoma state leaders taking action. Also, a record day on wall street, the dow jones crosses the 40,000 point mark for the first time ever. Our scott budman tells us whats leading to this surge and what it means for your pocketbooks. And we all know phones and fitness trackers share data. Yes, but did you know that your car might be doing it as well . We show were going to show you how you can find out what information your car is collecting. But lets go ahead and begin with that chaperon policy at the Contra Costa County fair, because it has opened its doors just hours ago, but it does so under the dark cloud of fights that broke out last year, you might remember. So lets go ahead and bring in our Sergio Quintana live in antioch for us this afternoon. Sergio, a strict rules officially in place for any teenagers going to the fair this year. Yes yeah, thats right audrey. And they have those new policy rules posted right out front in as people are coming in to buy their tickets. You can see heres the chaperon policy. Everyone whos entering has to be at least 18, or whos under 18 has to be accompanied by someone whos at least 25, so 25 or older. It also kind of says that a chaperon can only bring in four youth at a time. For people under the age of 18 at a time. Now, of course, as you mentioned, audrey, this is something that was adopted after those fights that broke out last year during the Contra Costa County fair events. But that was on a saturday night. There were a series. Of these fights that broke out, and it was to the point that the fair actually had to close down the grounds early so that they could clear out the grounds, and then the next day, when the fair reopened, they had adopted kind of a makeshift version of this policy. On the last day, on the sunday of the events. But now, as they are reopening for now, the fairs 88th year in operation, they are adopting this new policy for people coming in for the for the fair, for the four days, its audrey. Yeah, sergio. Its a big change for its 88th year, for people whove been going there for quite some time now. I know i see people behind you, people are already starting to get out there. How are they feeling about this chaperon rule . I want to show you. Apparently the policy really hasnt had any kind of an effect on, you know, watering down anyones entrance and entrance, interest in going you can see this is a line that extends for quite a bit, ive talked to some of the people in the line, and i also talked to people at the fair a little bit earlier today. They say it is kind of sad that there has to be a policy like this, but they completely understand the circumstances by which this kind of policy does have to be adopted. And they say that it is probably a good idea to have more adults to be able to supervise those teenagers who are going in. I just talked with a couple people in line right now who are just over 18 years old. They say, you know what . A lot of us just want to come out here and have fun. And its kind of sad that they have to have someone to go along with them in order to do that. So its a new policy, but it doesnt seem to be deterring anyone from coming out to the event. And i should mention, audrey, that this is not the only grounds that has had to do something great. America down in san jose has also adopted a similar policy that is 21. Or they have to have a chaperon who is at least 21. Of course, well have a full story coming up on this on nbc. Bay area news at six. Yeah, trying to keep it Family Friendly out there. Looking forward to your full story sergio at 6 00. Thank you for that preview. Appreciate it. Look at this. Protesters are putting up barricades around uc berkeleys abandoned anna head alumni hall. This is the second day that protesters have occupied that hall, which was boarded up about two years ago after a fire, the university wants to make clear that this is a group of nonstudents who are not connected with the protesters, who left their encampment at sproul plaza after reaching an agreement with the university. One protester says that the takeover is for nakba, which is a day that palestinians remember hundreds of thousands of their people being displaced back in 1948. University says its not going to comment on what it may do. Police and security guards are already on scene but havent engaged with the demonstrators just yet, and students and staff at Sonoma State University are expressing concern and confusion this afternoon, after the head of the university was placed on leave for striking an agreement with gaza protesters. The student protesters had been camped out on the universitys person lawn since april 26th, demanding an end to the war in gaza between hamas and israel. Well, on monday, University President mike lee announced that he had reached an agreement with the protesters, pledging to seek divestment strategies and end collaborations and exchanges with israeli state academic and research institutions. The csu chancellor quickly placed leigh lee on administrative leave yesterday for insubordinate action, and students say now they dont know if their agreement means anything they have been agreed to. But now that hes stepped down, its just so unsure, for everyones unsure right now. Talking with the encampment and everything. Like theyre just unsure of everything right now. So everythings up in the air. Its been a very opaque process, just like we dont know exactly how it was arrived at. We dont know exactly whats going to come next of it. Well, this morning we could tell you that messages of support for president lee were written in chalk on a university sidewalk, but staff did quickly wash those messages away. Okay, now to a big benchmark reached on wall street, the dow climbed above 40 k for the first time today, but with inflation going up and the cost of living inching higher as well, well, where does that leave us financially . Lets go to bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman for some answers. Scott, this is all foreign to me, so youre going to have to explain whats whats going on here. You know, youve said it. The economy is really red hot right now, audrey. And that has led to inflation, prices have gone up. Theres also inflationary what we did during the pandemic put more money into the economy. We raised wages recently. All of these things are inflationary. Theyre also putting a lot of money in the hands of people who are looking to spend it. And theyre spending it on wall street, buying stocks like never before. And thats why go back to the beginning of the pandemic. In 2020, the stock market was exactly half of what it hit today. Thats a really quick doubling and thats trillions of dollars that have gone into the market. So yes, the economy is really strong. A lot of people are working, wages are up, people are very confident, so they invest. But but because the economy is strong and people are shopping prices have gone up. And thats why things are inflationary at the same time. Okay i know you got a chance to talk with the head of bankrate about the record day, what are they saying . You know, economists are saying this is a sort of two things happening at the same time. Both people who are feeling, hey, ive got all this money, im going to buy individual stocks. And weve seen that. I mean, look at apple and microsoft and nvidia and all these stocks that people find so sexy and theyre bidding them up until the trillion dollar valuation. But economists are also seeing people who are saving money in their 401. S and retirement accounts. And thats why not only did the dow hit a record high this week, and the nasdaq, which is full of tech stocks, but the s p 500, a much broader range of stocks. And thats where people will invest for the long term for their retirement account or college funds. And thats why even the s p 500 is hitting record highs, because people are not just buying those individual stocks that they think will go up. Theyre saying, i want to invest in our nations economy for the long term. And so were seeing the markets on a very wide scale hitting record highs this week all across the board okay. So a lot of people investing. So how about our 401 ks. How are they doing. Theyre probably doing very well because generally a 401 k is something thats invested in a whole big basket of stocks. So it doesnt matter if youre seeing nvidia go up 50 one day and down 50, youre seeing the s p 500 at record highs. Youre seeing all these tech and health care and financial stocks doing well. Most people have a wide range of stocks in their Retirement Funds their 401 ks. So theyre probably doing very well. Now. If you check back a few years ago you would go, wow. But at least for the time being. And thats why they say keep these things for the long term. Because if you look at our nations history over the long term, the market has done well. Stick with it. Keep your money in there. That has worked so far. Yes. All right, scott, thank you for explaining. I get it now. Good. All right. Thanks. San joses plans to extend bart into downtown could cost upwards of 10 billion. Thats according to new proposals filed with the vta. There are three proposals on the table to transform the area around the existing diridon train station into a modern transit hub, the report says. Those options would cost between two and a half and 13 billion. Two of the options would have an underground connection to bart, while one would opt for a street level connection. But the san jose bart extension is running behind schedule, and they are still fine tuning all of the details. Bart currently only connects to northeast san jose at the berryessa station. Did tesla mislead consumers about its cars . Selfdriving capabilities . It is a question a lot of people are asking, and today, a u. S. District judge has ruled that a proposed Class Action Lawsuit can move forward. Tesla is accused of overstating that its cars would have full selfdriving capabilities back in 2016, saying that the cars would be able to drive themselves from l. A. To new york by the end of 2017. Teslas current full selfdriving feature of fsd fall short of those promises, requiring constant supervision. Companies also facing federal probes into whether its autopilot feature has contributed to fatal crashes. Okay, so weve gotten used to the idea that our devices collect our data. Yes, but did you know that your car may be doing the same thing . Mozilla foundation poured through the privacy documents of 25 of the most popular car brands, and the nonprofit found 84 of them share or sell a drivers data. All that data is collected through microphones, sensors and other devices built in or connected to the car. And its actually all legal because car buyers often agree to a Privacy Policy. Yes, when purchasing a new car, this lays out data a car could collect and sell about a driver, and this can include things like where and how much you drive, or even Sexual Orientation or activity. You know, i get asked a lot, well, how do they collect information about my Sexual Activity . And i dont know, i also dont know that they actually are all i can say for sure when we read the privacy policies was that they required you to consent to a Privacy Policy that said they could. The alliance for automotive innovation represents the auto industry. It is now pushing for congress to pass a federal Consumer Privacy law to make one clear privacy to one clear Privacy Policy to avoid confusion on what information is collected and how it is used. Still ahead, Governor Newsom speaks at the vatican. The message he wants to send to the world as we try to fight our climate in crisis. Also, downtown san jose is going to be the place youre going to want to be at tonight. The reason a Big Block Party is coming. Our robert honda is there taking all of it in. Hes going to join us with the answer. But before we head to break, we want to know what trending story would you like to see later on in this newscast . I have a poll up right now on my instagram. You still have some time to vote for one of these stories, and you are going to want to vote because its very close right now with all three stories, the grand mcflurry, ubers new caregiver feature, or raccoon scores big on soccer field. Were going to tell Climate Summit today, while touting californias efforts to combat climate change. I come here today, day 32. 32 Straight Days over one month where californias economy is literally being run with 100 clean energy, 100 32 days straight, proving the paradigm that this can be done. So you heard part of it right there. In his speech, newsom touched on the states decades long history of advocating for the environment, among them former president Ronald Reagans signature on a bill which curbed tailpipe emissions while reagan was governor of california, newsom also called out fossil fuel companies for fighting against efforts to combat climate change. Newsom will be in italy through tomorrow. Well, downtown san jose is ready to come alive for its annual Community Block party. Businesses will be coming together to rejuvenate the area with live music, art and much more. Our robert honda is in san jose right now. Robert, i see all that stuff behind you there. Whats whats the vibe like at this moment . Whats the vibe . You know, i feel like the guests who showed up just a little too early for a party. And so the hosts are kind of awkward. Some of the merchants said youre not shooting yet, are you . Because its starting around 5 00. But luckily, the band just started playing and nothing like a little bob marley music to kind of make everybody feel like its all started. So the vibe is pretty much eager anticipation. Theyre hoping several thousand people will be here at this event. Its a really good chance for about 20 of the merchants here who have set up to be able to introduce themselves to the public, so theyre obviously anticipating and hoping for a big crowd. And of course, theyre a little nervous because as any party host will tell you, youre always a little bit worried that not enough guests will show up. But so far, everybody seems very upbeat and optimistic, Mister Robert honda, the vibe is never awkward when you are there. I just have to say, i so theyre going to be block parties in other parts of the city. Yes. So is it going to be a different kind of event at each one . Well, its interesting because the basic strategy is to bring live music and entertainment, lots of food and drinks, as well as have the local businesses set up not only to be introduced to the public when they show up to this, but also to give them tours at their businesses nearby. So thats the basic strategy. But for example, even though they call it the Summer Block Party series, theres actually one every month into october. And so and theyre at different districts, like, for example, next month its going to be in the sofa district, which is the south first street area. And that has a lot of museums and cultural centers. And so i would imagine that the vibe there will be a little bit more oriented toward the businesses that dominate that particular district. For example, another one in october is at city hall, and anybody whos been around city hall knows theres a lot of Development Going on around there, and i would think that the vibe there would be a lot more introducing businesses than it would be just entertainment. So i think theyll adjust a little bit at each location. But the idea is always to bring more foot traffic and more visitors into that particular district. Sure, this is such a big deal for all of the businesses out there in the downtown area. So really interested to see how all of it turns out. And i know were going to be seeing your full story later on in the evening, so thank you for that preview. Hope you enjoy out there. Never awkward when youre around robert. All right. Four degrees difference in livermore nevada is about five degrees cooler and no major changes down through the south bay. But we are expecting to see a slight cool down already underway leading us into friday, but also the weekend ahead as well. When compared to those 80s. Now heres a closer look at that marine layer. Look at this. This is using satellite radar. You can see it hugging the entire coastline all the way from santa rosa down through salinas, and expect to see the chance of some light drizzle into the Early Morning hours, especially around areas like half moon bay, santa cruz, San Francisco. Even in through parts of the peninsula as well. Notice this is at about 230 in the morning, but if i fast forward this timestamp, you can see that around 1030 11 a. M.
