Morning to you. Thanks for starting your morning with us. Im marcus washington, im laura garcia. Were going to start out with traffic this morning, because mike has been following some breaking news that certainly impacting the morning commute huge impact the nimitz as you travel through hayward really jammed up two separate crashes weve learned involving six vehicles total. But two of those vehicles reportedly on fire. Now the good news i got word there are no major injuries. Major impact to the traffic, though for a short period of time, we had all southbound lanes blocked. Just about whipple, just past there. So alvaradoniles, lets talk about that. If you enter the freeway south of alvaradoniles into union city and fremont, youre okay heading south. If youre north of there, things will jam up as you approach 92 with the build coming off the castro valley. Y hyperion is a big surface street transitioning onto union city boulevard, but you see that a lot of traffic is heading across that san mateo bridge carry. Thats more slowdown than we typically see at this time of morning. So well watch that for 92 westbound and southbound, 880. Outside of those two areas, those rest of the commute is moving smoothly. Okay. Busy morning in the east bay. And were starting out with the same weather weve seen throughout much of the week cloudy morning clearing out and mild temperatures for the afternoon. Well see a high of 69 in oakland today, 64 in San Francisco and upper 70s for the interior. East bay, up to 79 in fairfield. Some of the warmer spots will be san jose, with a high of 81 and 82, in los gatos. So well talk about the weekend and all of the events going on around the bay area coming up in a few minutes. Back to you. We will check back with you. Thank you. Carrie, it is 602 right now. We are following breaking news this morning in the north bay. The president of Sonoma State University is on leave after sharing a campus wide message in response to propalestinian protests. President mike lee issued his comments tuesday night after the school reached an agreement with demonstrators. Among other things, he agreed to a new Advisory Council involving protesters, which Cal State Trustees never approved. He also promised to look into the schools investments and fundings, and to halt study abroad programs with israel. In a statement, sonoma states chancellor says i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact. The statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and Community Members to see and read the heart and mission of the csu is to create an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone we serve, not to marginalize one community over another. Our Ginger Conejero is Digging Deeper into this story. Shell have a live report in our next half hour. Looking into the sudden change now in leadership. And this morning there is a new camp protest happening at uc berkeley. Dozens of propalestinian protesters are occupying a uc owned building. Its very close to peoples park. The occupiers brought signs out about the war in gaza. A uc berkeley spokesperson says this group of mostly nonstudent is not connected with the protesters who left their encampment at sproul plaza after reaching an agreement with the university. One protester says the takeover is for nakba, a day palestinians remember hundreds of thousands of their people being displaced in 1948. Its heartbreaking to say people are dying, babies are dying, children pregnant, mothers, husbands and their older relatives. What kind of a madness is that . The University Says it is not going to comment on what it may do. There are a number of police and security guards keeping a low profile near that occupied building. Well, new at six ucs recent crackdown on student protests have now led to an authorization for a strike organized by academic workers, a uaw local post on social media says that the strike vote is in response to what the union claims to be intimidation and retaliation tied to employees exercising free speech, protest and collective action rights. The union includes teaching assistants, student researchers and tutors. Nearly 80 of these voting authorization authorized to strike, depending on conditions with union leaders, are now evaluating, with a possible announcement tomorrow. Now in response to the new york times, the uc president s office says such a strike would set a dangerous precedent by introducing nonlabour issues into labor agreements. The statement goes on to say in part, quote, to be clear, the uc understands and embraces its role as a forum for free speech, lawful protests and public debate. However, giving that role these nonlabor related disputes cannot prevent it from fulfilling its academic mission. Well, now to a live look inside. And this is a manhattan courtroom. This is where testimony is expected to resume. And former President Trumps criminal hush money trial president s former socalled fixer and lawyer, michael cohen, returns to the witness stand today. Hes seen as a pivotal witness in the prosecution. This is as it prepares to wrap up its case against the former president. Well, today, brie jackson joins us live from washington. So, bree, what can we expect to happen in court . Good morning. Marcus. So trumps defense team is expected to continue its crossexamination of the former president s former fixer. That is anticipate to take up most of, if not all of the day. Source familiar with the situation tells nbc news that cohens questioning will focus on his previous testimony under oath, and his repeated lies about events in 2016 and 2017. Now, trumps former fixer spent more than a year in prison for Campaign Finance violations, lying to congress and other crimes. Prosecutors say it was cohen who paid Stormy Daniels 130,000 in the closing days of the 2016 general election. They say this was all in an attempt to keep an alleged sexual encounter between the former president and the adult actress secret. Now, prosecutors say, trump reimbursed cohen in a series of payments that were falsely recorded as legal expenses. Cohen says the former president approved of the repayment following a meeting with the former Trump Organization chief Financial Officer allen weisselberg. Now, on tuesday, cohen testified that after years of defending trump, he turned on the former president and decided to tell the truth about the hush money scheme. After consulting with his family and pledging his loyalty to them and the country. Under crossexamination, he sparred with the former president s attorney, who tried to paint cohen as untrustworthy. Cohen is the only witness to directly tie former President Trump to the alleged falsifying Business Records scheme. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denies the relationship with daniels ever took place. Meanwhile, court is not in session on friday in order for trump to attend his sons High School Graduation. Cohen, marcus. All right, a lot to follow here. Brie jackson in washington, brie. Thank you. Governor gavin newsom is in italy this morning. While most of us were sleeping, he addressed the vatican Climate Summit while touting californias efforts to combat climate change. I come here today, day 32. 32 Straight Days over one month where californias economy is literally being run with 100 clean energy, 100 32 days straight, proving the paradigm that this can be done. In his speech, newsom touched on the states decades long history of advocating for the environment, among them former president Ronald Reagans signature on a bill which curbed tailpipe emissions. While reagan was governor of california. Newsom also went on to call out fossil fuel companies for fighting against efforts to combat climate change. Newsom is expected to remain in italy through tomorrow, 608 for you this morning, lets take a live look outside. Youre like, where is this . Well, this is Stevens Creek trail in mountain view. You know what today is . It is bike to work day. And, you know, we expect those trails to be extra busy this morning. Later this morning youre going to be seeing a lot of people out there. Energizer stations set up in workplaces along those trails all across the bay area and kerry. I was thinking like, oh, could i bike to work today . I checked it out. It would take me about three hours and 28 minutes, probably longer for me. Yeah, right out of the question for some of us. But you know, if you can, it would be a nice day to get out and do that. Right yeah. Its going to be beautiful temperature wise as youre putting on the helmet. Youre like, okay, its not too hot. Our temperatures are starting out in the mid 50s. And as we go throughout the day, were going to see a little bit more sunshine becoming all sunny. And your lunch hour as youre heading out to bike to the restaurant, its going to be a very comfortable 70 degrees in mountain view, and were seeing a wide range in temperatures. Were all starting out in the 50s, but then as we go throughout the day, the coastal areas stay cool as the fog lingers. But then as we go into the afternoon, some of our valleys start to warm up. Will be in the upper 70s and low 80s in san jose, one of the warmer spots in the map, with a high of about 80 degrees for this afternoon. Well talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes, but if you are too far away to bike and youre driving, mike has a look at where you may want to fill up today. We still have to get to our jobs and we got to pay gas. We want to pay a lower price, right . Well, were back on the ten best list, folks. Livermore for 27 and livermore, diamond, gas and mart on south front road is in the top ten for ten best prices in the state. San jose likes the price point of 4. 75. So lets recognize moes stop on mckee road. Thats just one of the stations with that price point in san jose and novato is under five bucks at matt and jeff specifically currently 4. 99 on vintage way. Get these reports on gasbuddy. Com two important traffic notes. Lets get out to the roadways. Were looking over to the east bay. We continue with only one southbound lane of 880 open just after you pass whipple road. This crash and a couple of cars that were on fire. No major injuries, but six vehicles have to be cleared. Theyve called two or possibly three tow trucks. They may need more. Theres a backup. You can use hesperian to get you past that. To alvaradoniles. Or you go to the san mateo bridge, which is showing a shift. More traffic and some flashing lights at the top of the screen. I dont know if you can make that out. Theres an issue. Disabled vehicle. I think in one lane. Back to you. All right. Good to know. Thanks, mike. All right. Its 611 right now. Coming up, an uptick in ticks. Be careful when youre out there hiking. Well have the very latest next on today in the bay. The best ways to protect yourself during the current surge. And a surge on wall street. New records, new all time highs, plus new help for adults helping out their elderly parents. Lets go out to the futures this morning. Looks like its going to be a quiet day on wall street. And laura, you had triplets, but this woman has your beat. Were talking about quadruplets born minutes apart. Walk the stage. Quintuplets even more than okay, well, they hit the stage minutes apart. Years later, the inspiring graduation story. One college that will never be the same. The dow, the nasdaq at all time highs. Uber says its going to offer all kinds of new services, from a way to get a ride for a whole bunch of friends or family to the airport or a concert to new services for the elderly that can be coordinated by their caregiver givers. Theyre going to talk about it ahead. On the today show, i was on the phone with my mom, and we were talking about some of the things that she needed help with caring for my grandparents. She needed to get them places, and she needed to get stuff delivered to them, like meals. And so we realized this product could have a powerful impact for folks like my mom. Okay, as for gamestop, that meme stock fell hard wednesday, down 18 after a two day rally fizzled. As you probably know, gamestop is a company in trouble. It sells video game discs at a time when people just download video games, but the stock rallied after a reddit user who calls himself Roaring Kitty posted this picture earlier this week. This that. Thats it. This is the whole reason behind the rally. No, the picture doesnt really mean anything other than maybe pay attention. I called up the creator and founder of gamestop to find out if he was buying up shares of his own company, and he said, what . No, that would be dumb. Gamestop is a relic. No im much too smart for that. This im being facetious. Its. What what we have is not. Yeah. Its not conducive. To what . The way i tend to buy stocks. Thats gary kusin, who, by the way, also created the Laura Mercier line of cosmetics. He says gamestop is a thing of the past. Its about as relevant. He says, to modern america as Blockbuster Video for the same reason that technology was responsible for blockbusters birth and blockbusters death. Technology is the same. Will do the same to gamestop. People no longer need to go by physical piece of software in a game store to play a game. They can simply download it. Gary says that, you know, intellectually it makes no sense. Emotionally. He thinks a lot of these younger people in their 30s, roughly, that are remembering the glory days of when they were kids and they bring in their used games. Yeah. You know, i did. I drove my kids to gamestop many times. So they have an affinity for the company. That nostalgia. Yeah, that doesnt really belong like a nostalgia for blockbuster. Oh yeah. Yeah nothing is like one left. So i think thats right. Good memories. But you cant make money off. No you cannot. All right, all right. Thanks, scott. You bet. Well, weve been talking about, for all you hikers out there, even just walking in a neighborhood. Tick season is in full swing in parts of the bay area. Got to be careful. Lyme disease experts say there could actually be an uptick in ticks due to this longer than unusual rainy season that we just had this year. Ticks tend to thrive in wet and moist conditions due to all the rain tick. Season is expected now to last through july. Lyme disease experts are cautioning hikers to stay in the middle of the path away from grasslands, and to be sure to check for ticks on family members and, of course, your beloved pets. They also say once you get home, throw those clothes in the dryer. Ticks are not killed by your laundry or showers or, they are killed in a hot, a hot dryer. She also says tick season will start to wind down as conditions actually get drier, and she expects bay area counties to put out advisories regarding the uptick in ticks in the coming weeks. Well, from one pest to another trending this morning, new york looking for a way to cut down on its rat infestation at the big apple, of course, known for some of its pizza. Right. But throwing away the pizza box may not fit in those traditional trash cans. So central park now has pizza box recycling bins. Its going to be around the park to curb the rat population. Those new bins are specifically designed for the shape of a pizza box. The park says that the workers actually can remove more than 100 boxes in the park alone. Thank you for showing us the box and not the rest. Also trending for you this morning. A true story about a family sticking together a set of quintuplets from new jersey. Now, now all graduates of the same college in their home state. The provolo family just received degrees from montclair State University. All five siblings received full academic scholarships to attend the school. Okay, thats like an amazing dream. Yeah their parents immigrated to the us from italy in 1988. They were born just minutes apart on the 4th of july. Wow. Their College Commencement was also special because they missed out on their High School Graduation due to the pandemic. This year, my own little triplets, theyre graduating from middle school to high school. This is a picture that we took up in tahoe. It goes so fast, i know boy. And if we can all receive academic scholarships for college, i know right . Oh my gosh, putting it out there. Youre working. Youre working on it. Oh my goodness. Wow. Time goes by fast. It sure does. It really does. Savor every moment. All right congratulations to all the graduates out there. Thats right. Weve got tons. It tis the season. Season in the middle of it. Yeah. And its also festival season. Fair season. Were just going to get it off season. Season tick. Season. Yeah. Oh sorry to bring it down but seasons are seasoning. Yeah. We have some nice weather for whatever season youre in in this part of your life. Were starting out in the 50s. For most of us, and as we go throughout the day, bright and sunny and a few of our temperatures in the inland valleys headed up to about 80 degrees. Tomorrow, it will be mild. In the 60s and low 70s, and then for the weekend were going to see a slight cool down with a few more clouds near the coastline. Taking a look at our high temperatures for today, novato, youll see a high of 71. Really nice upper 60s for oakland and san mateo. While as you make your way to the south bay, it will be in the upper 70s and low 80s. Overall, warm temperatures in the valleys. Cool weather for the coastline tomorrow. Not much of a change. In fact, if youve been looking at the 7day forecast up at the bottom of the screen, each day pretty much looks the same. So were going to settle in this pattern. Just enjoy everything thats going on. We have the giants game tomorrow night. Youll also be able to watch it on nbc bay area. But its going to be cool out there at oracle park starting out at about 60 degrees, dropping down to the upper 50s with a gusty wind, but definitely warmer in the south bay for the bay fc game tomorrow night. Starting out in the low 70s and then in the upper 60s as we head into the evening. And then on saturday there will be the boogie Music Festival in downtown campbell. Great weather for that as theyre setting up all the booths in the morning, its going to be a bit of a chill in the air with some low 60s, but as we go throughout the day, the music continues and all of the celebrations, its going to be in the mid 70s and it will wrap up the weekend to, i think i said a kickoff to spring earlier, but yeah, we call this the kickoff to summer, the bay to breakers that we have in San Francisco. So its starting out though, feeling very much like a San Francisco summer with some mid 50s in the morning. Low clouds, mist and drizzle and looking at our inland temperatures, it will be in the mid 70s, extending into early next week and not much of a change along the coastline either. And mike, youre still in alert status. I am, but we have a better relief valve now. The san mateo bridge looks like its very crowded, but its actually going to be moving better. As they cleared whatever debris was going on, we saw the flashing lights along the flat section. Now we are looking at better speed. Sensor reads across the span. 92 will get you out of the backup if you have to head to the peninsula, youll use that instead of the dumbarton bridge. Because of a crash that jams you up before you can get to the dumbarton bridge south. 880 is still here. Only one lane is open. A lot more traffic shows up on our Speed Sensors down here, hesperian down to union city boulevard. So that is a factor as you travel south out of oakland, but out of oakland across the bay bridge, that drive is standard back to you. Thank you. Mike 622 for you this morning counting down to the olympics. Up next, were going to introduce you to the team usa skateboarder, hoping to move like jagger while in paris. But first, a quick reminder because you dont want to miss this. The giants taking on the rockies tomorrow night to kick off a three game series at oracle park. You can watch it all right here at nbc bay area. It starts at 7 p. M. So get the hot dogs and the about all the possibilities and maybe even clear your own calendars. Thats because the new nfl schedule is out with some big matchups. Now here are the four biggest niners games next season in week one. Of course, they host the jets. This is on monday night football right here on nbc bay area. Theyre also going to host the chiefs in the super bowl. This is the super bowl rematch i should say from thats going to happen october 10th. Super bowl. Were thinking ahead here. So then you have two more games sunday night games right here on nbc bay area. That includes the cowboys over at levis on october 27th and then december 1st match up in buffalo. If youre named after music legend mick jagger, youre bound to be a star. And thats the case for olympics skateboarder jagger eaton. Jagger won a bronze in mens street, tokyo, where the sport made its olympic debut. It only came out after the fact that he was skating on a broken ankle when he won his olympic medal. This time around, jagger, looking to qualify in both mens street and park in paris. Jagger is the only skateboarder to ever win world titles in both disciplines. For this 23 year old, he doesnt feel the pressure, he says. He just loves to skate. I really think that if i do the work, i get the result. I mean, thats thats what you saw in tokyo and thats hopefully what youll see in paris. Okay so heres why we brought up mick jagger. If youre wondering, this kid was named jagger because of his parents. First date was actually at a Rolling Stones concert. Nice. First date. Yeah, yeah. Not bad. Not bad at all. Nbc bay area is your home for all things olympics. Our Jessica Aguirre is headed to paris this summer. Shes going to bring us complete coverage. Olympics kicks off on july 26th right here on nbc. I cant wait. I know its going to be fun. Nice. All right, well, its 627 for you know what . Weve got a lot more ahead for you at 630. Including that breaking news out of sonoma state overnight. Sonoma State University being rocked. Marcus as the universitys president , is placed on leave. Up ahead, well tell you about that controversial email that he sent that details his agreement with campus protesters. Kpee did my legs shrink . I can move them. I mean, i knew Alaska Airlines premium class had extra legroom but this. This feels different. Okay. Crazy idea. On the count of 3. Im going to try and cross my. Ohhhhhhhhhhh boyy thats nice. Woooooo a state where the universitys president is stepping aside. The Reason School leaders came to that sudden decision, plus cracking down on speeding drivers as we take a live look at that morning commute. Well talk about that proposal aimed at increasing punishment for those driving over the limits and watching our coastlines evolve. The new Technology Scientists are using to track erosion caused by climate change. This is today in the bay a very good thursday morning to you. Thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia and im marcus washington. Well, if youre heading outside, stick around because meteorologist kari hall has a look at what you can expect across the bay area this morning. Another nice pleasant one this morning. Yeah. Starts out very cloudy and cool. But then we know its going to be a nice day once all of those clouds clear out. And well also have the mild temperatures. Right now were in the mid 50s across the board from San Francisco to san rafael, down to palo alto and in san jose. Were starting out our morning at 57 degrees. And in martinez it is 50. Its going to be cloudy through about 10 to 11 00, but then clear the rest of the day and temperatures headed for the low 70s. I think thats just perfect. Were going to see a high of 81 in san jose. A little warm there compared to the 71 in novato. And the 64 well see in San Francisco. And mike, you have some good news now for hayward. Yes, the thumbs up right there. Hayward cleared 880 folks. Take a look at this. The sensor still slow. Theyll start recovering pretty quickly. South 882 separate crashes, two vehicles on fire. Four others had to be towed, but no major injuries. And now no lanes blocked. South. 880 recovers. I show you the speed sensor on hesperian boulevard. Still slow. Crowded. There will be folks taking that as an alternate, but the Speed Sensors have already started to improve quite a bit from whipple all the way back in toward 92, which is a relief valve and moving smoothly, slowly. You do have a good crowd across the peninsula, but they are moving smoothly as far as those cars go. Dumbarton of course, a much lighter load, but thats if youre coming from the south south bay itself. Easy drive in the backup at the bay bridge and the east bay. Pretty standard. Back over to you, laura. All right. Thank you very much, mike. Breaking news that were following the president of Sonoma State University on leave following a controversial email detailing a pact made with propalestinian campus protesters today in the bay. Ginger Conejero Saab joins us live from sonoma state this morning. And ginger, the chancellor, says the message was sent out without appropriate approvals. That is correct. Good morning laura. In an email, the universitys president , michael lee, detailed an agreement that he had made with students that were camped out on persons lawn here on campus. They were camped out since april protesting the hamas israel war. Now, the letter was sent on social media or posted, i should say, on social media by students for justice in palestine. It was dated may 14th and it was sent to Campus Community, the Campus Community president lee saying he joined discussions about students demands. And as a result of those discussions, he says the parties reached several points of agreement, including establishing an Advisory Council of students for justice in palestine, an academic boycott of israeli institutions, disclosure and divestment of Sonoma State UniversityFoundation Investments and calls for a cease fire. Now, many are expressing issues with that letter, including the director of the Colleges Center for the study of the holocaust and genocide, who tells the press democrat he was completely blindsided and finds a provisions made highly problematic. In a statement, csu chancellor Mildred Garcia said lees statements were sent without appropriate approvals. She goes on to say in part, quote, i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and Community Members to see and read. In response, president lee said, quote, in my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, i marginalized other members of our student population and community. I realize the harm that this has caused, and i take full ownership of it. I deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions. Now, this morning here on campus, we found several messages of support written in chalk for mike lee, written on one of the sidewalks just behind us. Among those messages, justice for mike lee. And were not done yet. But those messages , they didnt stay around for too long. Sweepers were out here this morning. Crews were out to clean the sidewalks, scrubbing away those messages written in chalk. You can see whats left of them behind. Just a wet sidewalk there. All those messages at this point have been cleared and have been cleaned away. Now nathan evans steps into the role of acting president here at the university until further details are outlined regarding lees absence. And this all happens, laura. Just days before the Commencement Ceremonies that are scheduled on saturday. So we really will continue to watch how the rest of the Community Reacts to this news. Laura. Right. And we know that weve seen so many, you know, activists and activities happening really throughout our state at so many ucs, ginger, thanks for the latest. Well, speaking of that, protesters this morning occupying an abandoned uc berkeley owned building. This is near peoples park. And the latest actions by propalestinian protesters. Now in a statement, the school says that those protesters mostly nonstudents and a group not associated with those demonstrators who recently ended their tent protest over in sproul plaza. So far, the school not commenting on the response it may take last night. We do know that police and security guards were laying low nearby. Meanwhile, in southern california, growing tensions are spreading as they send classes online. Today at uc irvine, it follows a chaotic day. This is where you can see police made multiple arrests after they moved in and clearing out the propalestinian encampment. We do know that multiple Law Enforcement teams also broke through those barricades on campus. This was a building that was occupied by protesters. The chancellor says his school exhausted all options before resorting to the police intervention. After that situation became unmanageable. Now, teachers and two Bay Area School districts, they plan to hold rallies today. This includes educators with contra costa school district. They plan to rally against county superintendent of schools lynn mackey and the board of education amid contract negotiations. Now, this group is threatening to strike over their salaries and intake procedures for students that rally is expected to begin at 345 this afternoon in pleasant hill. Now also today, fairfield sassoon educators, theyre holding a rally to bring attention to its contract negotiations. Theyre negotiating salaries. That rally is at fs usd offices in fairfield at 330. This afternoon. Now we have reached out to both districts and were waiting for comment. Happening today, state lawmakers are expected to hit the gas on a new push to crack down on speeding. The bill would increase penalties for speeders. It would include two strikes on your driving record for anything more than 25mph. Anyone caught speeding more than once in a calendar year would have their license suspended. The Senate Appropriations committee is expected to take up that measure today. Also happening today, the Contra Costa County fair. Well, its kicking off. So i want you to get ready for the carnaval rides. If you love the food, you love the animals. And for some people, the clowns, thats all going to happen today. The four day event is at the park. Is the event park in antioch. Its going to run through sunday. Those doors open at noon each day. Those tickets for adults, 12 bucks. I think the clowns are like at the circus, not at the fair. Sometimes they havent. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No kidding. Im talking about my side job, funnel, funnel cake season, all that. I would pay to see. Yeah. All right, well, well go see marcus at the fair this evening. Some people call me a clown. So, you know, we know we dont i dont know out there. All right, lets get started. We have some great weather for the fair kicking off the season. And its going to be mostly sunny there. Temperatures in the low 80s for highs not only today but throughout the weekend. So even though we will see cool overnight temperatures and late evening temperatures, its going to heat up quickly and then we also have the 626 night market at the Alameda County fairgrounds. Not the fair going on there, but definitely something to enjoy and eat. A lot of food too. Were going to see temperatures in the mid 70s to start, and then coming down to the upper 50s as we go late into the evening. Also, well have the oakland greek festival this starts on friday and were going to see temperatures there in the mid 60s and then coming down to the upper 50s as we go towards 7 to 8 00. And then on saturday theres the himalayan fair. Im just helping you make plans all around the bay area. This weekend. Were going to have some beautiful weather in berkeley, starting out cloudy and cool with some upper 50s and low 60s, but then headed for the mid 60s during the middle of the day and in Santa Cruz Well see highs in the upper 50s. The fog lingers a lot longer. You may not see a lot of sunshine, but it will be a cool Beach Weekend as well as some overnight temperatures in the low 50s. Mike, whats the update you have for the commute . You know, the bay bridge . We have the backup and i can show this to you because thats not the Biggest Issue for the east bay anymore. The alert cleared from the hayward area. Flashing lights. Not a concern. This is a maintenance vehicle letting folks know theyre coming through. But the bay bridge toll plaza does show a pretty smooth drive. Pretty expected distribution here. With the build now in toward walnut creek off of 242 for southbound 680. Now your alert. I was talking about 880 southbound. All lanes have cleared after all lanes were blocked for a short period of time, just shy of alvarado. Niles. We see Speed Sensors starting to improve quite a bit. A lot of backup to get through this. Combining the normal commute along with the backup from the earlier crash and very slow on hesperian, recover for the san mateo bridge. Dumbarton bridge never really affected. And back to you. Thanks, mike. Scientists are warning our coasts are eroding. So whats being done . Coming up next on today in the bay, we take a look at technology being used to track the evolution of californias coastline and americas top spy chief is warning the russians are interfering again. And kari hall is not the only one helping you make weekend plans. I have a boatload of ideas for you. I am in redwood city, where the pacific sail and power boat show is happening. We will show you the tippity top of the line and something maybe a little more affordable and boats that practically drive thselves. Youreem a slow network is no network for business. Several social networks also have spotted new efforts by foreign actors pretending to be things like a state Republican Party or black lives matter, or just regular americans. And of course, theyre not. National intelligence director avril haines spoke with senators yesterday, briefing them on new threats. The idea, she says, is to continue to sow distrust in american institutions. You dont have to fool everyone all the time. You just have to cast doubt. And a. I. Helps the bad guys do that. For example, innovations in ai have enabled foreign influence actors to produce seemingly authentic and tailored messaging more efficiently, at greater scale and with content adapted for different languages and cultures. President biden, former President Trump have agreed to two debates well ahead of the president ial election, the first on cnn late next month. Trump, eager to depict biden as an old man. Though trump is just four years younger. Hell do it, though, without the live studio audience that energizes him on a network he says is unfair to him. The biden camp, meanwhile, pleased that the debate is far earlier in the election cycle than previous campaigns. The Biden Campaign has said part of the reason they think theyre behind in the polls is because some americans dont really believe trump and biden are going to be the actual candidates. Donald trump will be back in court today at his first criminal trial. We expect a little bit more crossexamination of former trump attorney michael cohen, and then the prosecution will rest. And then its the defenses turn. President biden meantime, on wednesday met with the joint chiefs and combatant Combatant Commanders at the white house to discuss the threats out there in the world. And there are quite a few the white house monitoring the situation in slovakia and the political fallout of that attempted assassination. South africa is going to ask the International Court of justice today to stop israels attack on rafah, saying too many civilians are at risk. Us also opposed to that attack, though it doesnt support south africas accusation of genocide. The Prime Minister of israel, meantime spoke to cnbc, said these attacks will go forward with or without americas help. So we are doing what we have to do and i hope we can see eye to eye with the united states. Were talking to them, but ultimately we do what we have to do to are to protect the life of our nation and to prevent the prevent such savageries from being repeated again and again and again. Were watching Vladimir Putin in china. Russia needs chinese trade and support to continue its attacks on ukraine. China and russia declared a no limits partnership in 2022. The white house has just declared executive privilege, denying a request from house republicans. For audio of the interview between special counsel robert her and President Biden. Weve had certified transcripts for months now. Bidens critics in congress wanted the audio, doj said no. Now the white house is saying no as well, saying its part of the executive branch and not something the legislative branch can have. Committee leaders james comer and james jordan never specified a reason they needed the audio. And finally, President Biden will celebrate the 70th anniversary of brown versus board of education today. That, of course, of course, reversed an earlier decision, ending separate but equal and creating a more just america. Carrie thanks, scott. Now lets talk about our climate in crisis. Californias coastline is constantly changing, and there is a group of scientists at Scripps Institution of oceanography keeping an eye on those changes with some pretty advanced technology. Theyll go out once a week and use a laser mapping system called lidar, which stands for light detection and ranging. The goal is to understand when as well as how much of our coastline and where those coastal bluffs fail. They are able to compare even the smallest changes at the beach from the week, from week to week, or even the year before. And researchers hope to use this information to build better models to help predict how our coastline is going to evolve. Predicting when and where a landslide is going to occur is extremely difficult. Definitely, there are things that we can look for. You can tend to get repeated events in the same area over time. And so landslide can be active over a period of weeks or days or months. The recent el nino may be a glimpse into those changes. Ocean levels rise slightly during an el nino year, and combine that with heavy rain, king tides and a couple of days with huge waves this past winter and its all a recipe for erosion. If you want to learn more about this technology, were going to post a story on our website, nbc bay area. Com, and look for it on our climate in crisis page. Make sure and check it out. Thanks, carrie. Well, redwood city will host boat lovers all weekend. This is as the west point harbor welcomes back the pacific sail and powerboat show. So we sent out skipper kris sanchez joining us live from redwood city. Shes got a look at what is new in boating. This morning. This is fun. Tis the season. This is you know because i know you both so well i have picked out some boats for you. Laura, i think youre going for luxury. Marcus. I think youre probably going for speed, right . Yeah, i love it. I think youre right. So were going to start with the luxury. This is a 2 million boat. You get a discount if you come to this show. It is top of the line. It is making its west coast debut. I have jim ban here. Good morning. Good morning. So what makes this boat worth 2 million. Well chris, this is a 45 foot princess. This is the debut for the west coast. And its just so much luxury. Twin volvo Detroit Diesel engines that are fabulous. And the main thing about this boat, besides the luxury accouterments everywhere, is that it has stabilizers. So it always runs smooth and flat and calm, and it has a joystick to park. It is a joy to drive. Its pleasant, its fun, its family, and its just made for relaxation. It feels very comfortable. But i think this next boat that were going to talk about is really more marcuss speed, because its fast and it is slick. Its a kris kris chriscraft express cruiser, 32ft. And its it beckons the old days of how they made the wood chriscraft. So it has all types of, really cool features, how it used to be, but its a brand new boat with the latest technology. And, marcus, i just thought that, you know, with your style that would fit you very well. But this one, next one, if you saw the movie argylle, you saw this, this boat at the end. Exactly. Its a 33 foot fairline express cruiser. Elegant. It was very similar to an aston martin automobile. Layout is fantastic. Very fast. Twin v8s great boat. If youre looking to go quickly and in great style. And theres another sailboat thats making its west coast debut, and it is big enough for the whole today in the bay family. So the next potluck is going to be on this one. Oh the big catamaran is fantastic. Its 44ft 26ft wide so you dont heal over like you would in a typical sailboat. Some people like to be level all the time. Its it sleeps ten. Its very comfortable, has solar panels on it to run a lot of things. Its a world cruiser, the good thing about all these boats is you can come down to the marina and ask any question about any boat you want. So you mentioned solar panels and our meteorologist is all about the climate, there is an electric boat that is better for the environment. Absolutely vida is a new company and we have two of the world debut, two electric boats that are going to be used for the marina itself here at west point harbor. And they are fantastic. Theyll go for 24 to 26 hours before recharge, go up to ten miles an hour, and, theyre quiet and theyre clean and theyre beautiful. All right. So you dont have to buy a 2 million boat. You can come check out, boats that start at 25,000, which is a lot of money , but it is if you are interested in boating, it is a good foot in. And there are all kinds of other things that are going to be giving away life jackets as well, and theyre going to be fun things for the kids. So lots of things happening, starting at 11 00 today and running through sunday. You have the information there on your screen along with the, website where you can pre buy tickets. So the only boat i didnt see out here was pontoon boat, which is the kind of boat i boat i drove in college. Its a little disappointing. All right. Thanks, chris. Ill make something for chris out of, some. Weve got some cardboard. Yeah, well make some. Oh, i dont want to go on that boat, chris, pick me up that electric boat. Well figure out how to pay for it later. All right . Were starting out with some clouds as we are looking in san rafael, and its going to eventually clear up our temperatures. Warming up. But with those clouds around the coastline, it keeps those temperatures down. And well see that continue into the weekend. And its going to be a bit cooler but staying dry. So our high temperatures today in the upper 70s for the east bay down to fremont, mountain view, also 77 with some low 70s for much of the north bay. And tomorrow the coast is cool staying in the 60s while our valleys will be in the upper 70s. Lets talk about some things going on this weekend as well. The boogie Music Festival in downtown campbell on saturday and sunday. So it starts out with some low 60s and heads for the mid 70s, and well wrap up the weekend with bay to breakers in San Francisco. A little cool for those costumes in the mid 50s for the runners in the morning. And then as we go throughout next week, its going to continue to reach into the mid 70s inland and mid 60s for San Francisco. And mike, youre looking at some of the areas that are the worst. Yeah well start where its the worst here. Its 880 but its not as worst as it was before. Thats horrible grammar. But all good news for the sensors. Starting to show improvement off of 238 all the way down to about whipple and gooding recovery. We dont have the need for this relief valve, but we do have the build. You just saw those Speed Sensors start to slow a bit across the san mateo bridge, but no drama. Now, back to you. All right. Thank you very much, mike. It is 654 right now and happening now. The president of Sonoma State University is on leave after sharing a campus wide message in response to propalestinian protests. Among other things, he agreed to a new Advisory Council and involving protesters, which Cal State Trustees never approved. He also promised to look into the schools investments and funding, and to halt study abroad programs with israel. Heres a quote i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on sonoma state community community, and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and Community Members to see ahead. The heart and mission of the csu is to create an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone we serve, not to marginalize one community over the other. That is from the chancellor of csu sonoma. Well, protesters this morning they are occupying an abandoned uc berkeley owned building. This is near peoples park. This is in the latest action for pro by propalestinian protesters.
