Closely watched mayors race. The new twist causing the incumbent to suddenly pull out and all the buzz. San franciscos new wnba team stirring up some excitement this morning. Were going to break down just what valkyries means as well. This is today on the bay. I think we got a few right here on this desk for you this morning. Want to say good morning to you . Im Marcus Washington. We had to tuck our wings. Good morning, im laura garcia. Were going to check the morning commute with mike. Theres some activity out there youre going to need to know about. But first, a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. Well, its pretty quiet over here. We havent had a whole lot going on except for morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. As we get a look at what were seeing right now in san jose, it is mostly clear with that thin veil of the clouds that have been that have been drifting by, and were going to see some of the warmest days for today and tomorrow. So bring those temperatures up a couple of degrees. Its still going to be cool near the coast with low clouds and drizzle there. And for the weekend it will be slightly cooler as that wind kicks up just a little bit. But were not seeing a significant shift in our temperatures. Were still only up to about 80 in livermore, 85, though in fairfield, while in the north bay will be in the upper 70s, and Mountain View will see a high of 78 degrees there and upper 60s for san mateo. Well talk about the weekend coming up. Mike. Now you have some slowing on highway 24. Its actually im sorry, carrie, i changed it up last minute because we just saw the status had not changed over here at the bay bridge. So there is slowing on 24. Theres also this incident on grand avenue, the off ramp, i believe getting off of 80. So if you use the grand avenue sort of serpentine right here, that is the problem with an overturned rig. And it may be hours till they clear that im trying to locate exactly where youre going to get diverted off from the area, because it does sound like that particular ramp is the issue. But getting to the bay bridge is okay. You can see it in the distance. You see those lights right there. Its only affecting that one section of roadway. But the approach coming off the nimitz and out of the maze is just fine. At the bay bridge toll plaza. So well continue to follow this, and ill let you know as that does potentially impact some folks coming out of the maze. Again, no slowing shows up here. Theres what kerry was talking about. I did warn her i was going to talk about slowing on highway 24 overnight road work. It looked like they were starting to let some lanes loose because the backup was lessening. But this is not scheduled to completely clear for the next hour, so well continue to follow slower drive into orinda, but not the caldecott tunnel. All right. Back to you. Good to know. Thanks, mike. Two decision 2024. And the date is set in the fight to recall Alameda Countys embattled District Attorney. As many expected, it will be part of the general election ballot this november. Today, in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is live for us this morning. And, ginger, what are the key factors here with that decision . Well, marcus, laura, good morning. There were a number of key points that were made to make this decision by the board of supervisors in Alameda County that recall election, as youve mentioned, is now set for november 5th, which is also in line with the president ial election. Pamela price will speak to this later this morning. Well be. Were going to be watching out for that. Thats happening at ten later. But some wanted this recall earlier than that november 5th date saying that Public Safety is on the line. But in a final vote, the board of supervisors voted yesterday three to nothing, with two supervisors excused from the proceedings to consolidate the recall election. Supporters say it makes sense because voter turnout is much higher for president ial elections compared to turnout for special elections. Consolidating the election also means consolidating the cost. But others who spoke last night say the sooner a recall takes place, the better, because they feel the das soft on crime policies are costing lives. Theres another group called the campaign to protect the win of pamela price, and they say they are going to court to get what they want, which is to stop this recall altogether. They violated a key provision of the charter that gave them ten days to verify those signatures. They took over a month to verify the signatures. Well, price says that this recall was funded by billionaires and by people who are uncomfortable with the idea that there is a black District Attorney in Alameda County. And again, as mentioned, she will be addressing this specific decision later this morning. Well be there. Well be watching out for those updates and give them to you on air and online at nbcbayarea. Com. Marcus. Laura, certainly well be following ginger. Thank you. Developing this morning in florida, the driver of a pickup truck now facing criminal charges in the crash that killed eight farmworkers on a bus. Dozens of others are injured. The bus was carrying more than 50 people when the crash happened early yesterday morning, about 50 miles north of tampa. The bus crashed through a fence, struck a tree and then overturned. The pickup truck driver is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence. Well, the Justice Department is now saying boeing violated its deal. It was a deal meant to shield the company from criminal prosecution over those two fatal accidents involving the 737 max planes. Well, now that opens up the plane maker to potential criminal prosecution over these accidents. Both of those took place over the six months, six years ago. I should say. The doj says that in may, the discovery, while investigating that recent door blowout of the Alaska Airlines flight earlier this year. Happening today on capitol hill, the house is holding a hearing on the response to the quay bridge collapse in baltimore. The ntsb chairperson, jennifer holliday, will testify. It comes after the ntsb released its initial report from its investigation. The report says a cargo ship lost power, regained power and then lost it again before crashing into the bridge. It also revealed that just ten hours before the incident, the ship had a similar power failure. At least two. Bay area campus protests suddenly appear to be winding down, but at uc merced today, activists are organizing a protest tied to uc regents meeting. There that meeting is scheduled to begin later this morning. Now here in the bay area. Later today, propalestinian activists at San Francisco state will address an agreement reached with the school to dismantle the tent encampment that started there more than two weeks ago. A group first made that announcement yesterday and posted it on social media. Organizers also vowing to continue their efforts to force a cease fire in gaza. Uc berkeley propalestinian protesters are also dismantling their encampments, vowing to keep the pressure on the on the school to end the middle east conflict. Now, many took their tents down yesterday. This is after more than three weeks outside of sproul plaza. The peace was reached. This is after the agreement with administrators and a Public Statement from the chancellor supporting a cease fire. Some of the protesters are vowing to continue their effort at other campuses, including uc merced. We realize that what we get a free palestine to all the amazing kind of, get from the university in terms of our demands being met, have kind of been met to some extent. The fact that i get to say theres more to win. There is still another fight. There is still another campaign thats within reach. Now protesters are still demanding the uc system divest all assets in israel. A statement from cals chancellor states that the uc system does not support war and, quote, we should examine whether uc berkeleys Investments Continue to align with our values or should be modified in order to do so. End quote. Well the situation at san jose state, meanwhile, continues to simmer. Propalestinian supporters launched a their encampment on monday. Many are camped out there surrounding the schools iconic victory statue, but the school is already telling protesters that they need to move and that the encampment violates university policy. The university released a statement saying in part, violence, vandalism and unprotected speech that promotes a hostile or harassing environment is prohibited by the law and csu policy. Those in violation of the policy and or breaking the law will face consequences. San franciscos five top candidates for mayor will debate the citys issues on monday, but on two separate stages yesterday, mayor london breed pulled out of the debate planned by the Political Advocacy Group together sf action. She cited concerns that the deep pocketed group is too closely connected to her opponent, mark farrell. Breed claims his campaign has unduly influenced the debate and described it as tainted beyond repair. Mayor breed will now be holding a separate, moderated conversation on the same day and time with another mayoral opponent, longtime supervisor aaron peskin. The original debate will still include three of breeds reelection challengers mark farrell and daniel lurie, who are both polling close behind breed supervisor aisha safai is also set to participate in that debate. Well, violet is taking over the golden state, as we first told you here on today in the bay. The bay areas new wnba team is the valkyries. Yes so google searches for valkyries spiked. This is after that announcement yesterday. This is all according to team that comes from norse mythology. Valkyries are a host of warrior women who are fearless and unwavering, flying through air and sea alike. Now, that team added, the brand is golden states modern interpretation of valkyries strong, bold and fierce. The new team is already a huge hit with fans. Oh, its so exciting. It reminds me of when the wnba came out in like 97. I think i was in seventh grade and there was so much excitement. Now there are multiple symbols in the logo here, starting with the v for valkyries, the bay area is depicted to show the teams span across the bay area because they will practice over in oakland and play in San Francisco. The bridge tower doubles as a sword. Weapons of mythology. Valkyries would carry, and the 13 lines coming from the top of that sword represent the franchise, becoming the 13th active team in the wnba and of course, its all in the teams color violet, i like it. Nice addition that it is. A lot of people are talking about it. Yeah, yeah, we were talking about it yesterday too. And, you know, just my husband pulled up a movie where there were some valkyries. Oh, really . Yeah. I cant even remember what it was, but its one of those superhero movies. And he was like, this is what a valkyrie is. So they were flying in on horses with wings. And a lot of people think of flight of the valkyries. Yeah, yeah. All right, so lets get started this morning. Were going to start in San Francisco, where were seeing those low clouds and a few hues of purple there. Were going to also see some mist and drizzle throughout the next couple of hours. But then well become mostly sunny going into late morning into the afternoon. Youll notice its going to be a cool day there. Temperatures only in the 60s, and were starting out across the bay area with some low to mid 50s. As we approach the noon hour, we go from 50s to 60s and 70s. Its going to warm up quickly here today with some of our inland east bay spots at noon in the mid 70s and headed for the upper 70s and low 80s. So its going to be a little bit warmer than it has been, and will be as hot as 91 in ukiah and 90 in clear lake, but mostly 70s elsewhere. Well talk about whats ahead for the rest of the week. Coming up, mikes trying to find us some lower gas prices. Yeah, around the bay. Were going to move along to our gas prices where things have been coming down a bit. I know ive seen three price drops at a local gas station, but still not making the best board. We do have Contra Costa County though. Their best is for 75 at arco in Pleasant Hill on Pleasant Hill road. We have the same best price in cupertino. So the south bay here cupertinos car wash on its called cupertino, car wash on north de anza boulevard and in the north bay. Lets check vallejo for 83 is the lowest there at central gas on springs road. So now these prices we know theyre affected by a number of factors. But what if california got rid of the gas tax to lower prices . Well thats a new proposal thats being currently being tested out. Make sure to stick around 530 at kris. Sanchez is going to be breaking down. What would replace it and how you can get some cash to help test it out. Those are all tantalizing options here. Were looking, though, at the roadway. Well, not so bad. Lots of green, but thats great sensor reads. We do have one problem that continues here off of the bay bridge approach westbound 80. The grand avenue off ramp is impacted. The sensors dont show the slowing, but the live camera still shows the tow truck and the overturned rig there. That may be there for hours. It affects a very small portion of your commute, but it will be visible on the approach to the bay bridge. Well keep tracking those flashing lights, but the bay bridge toll plaza moves smoothly back to you. Thank you mike. Well, we all know college is expensive and student loan rates, well, theyre reaching the highest theyve been in. A slow network is no network for business. Thats why more choose comcast business. We will quickly see that sunshine break out as we go through towards sunrise and throughout the rest of the morning, and our temperatures in the low 70s at lunchtime. Its going to be a Beautiful Day, a touch warmer in spots. Well talk about that coming up in a few minutes. And right now i want you to watch this is the bay bridge toll plaza, obviously, and see all the traffic coming through, including off the overcrossing. But note those red lights here. Theres some more flashing lights just off the screen. Oh, right at the edge. Thats activity. Because of the ongoing alert thats going on for westbound 80, the grand avenue off ramp, i overshot that with the arrow. I dont want you to miss it though. So well show you exactly where it is coming up. Well good morning. Very happy wednesday to you. Well get more inflation data here in about 12 minutes. And it may be good news. Economists thinking that price hikes excluding gas and food might be slowing. Now one key question are rent hikes slowing down. Rent is one third of the whole inflation calculation. Uber is buying a taiwanese Food Delivery Company for nearly 1 billion. Biomarin laying off 170 staffers up in san rafael and novato, a federal court says elon musk must answer questions from the securities and Exchange Commission as it investigates the purchase of twitter. Musk in the past has refused to testify. The sec is investigating whether musk violated laws with statements he made as he bought twitter stock. Originally, he said, without the intention of buying the company. The department of education has raised the Interest Rates for new federal Student Loans to the highest in more than a decade, 6. 53 graduate school loans now above 8 current loans. The loans that people are paying back right now are usually fixed, so this applies to new loans. So High School Seniors right now are going to pay that higher rate for college. Google held its google i o conference yesterday and it was quite psychic very northern californian. No new gadgets or big headlines. But the company did say starting monday it would expand. The Chinese Government meantime says google owned youtube must cut off access to one certain song in hong kong the anthem. Glory to hong kong. Of course we can play it all. We want free country. So heres glory to hong kong, played by a guy in a train station in london. Now i am mystified. I am mystified by the guy who then has a chinese flag right to oppose it. Does he carry flags in his pocket . Does he, you know, is he ready for anything now . This has never been the official anthem of hong kong, but it is something that was sung by protesters. And again, youtube ordered to take it off of the hong kong version of youtube. So at first i thought it was elton johns. I guess thats why they call it the blues. At the beginning i was like, how do you even know thats what that was . You know, it would be interesting is protesters have a are tricky like that. Theyll pick Something Else thats very common and then make that their song. Lets see if they do that. All right. Thank you scott. Well the wnba newest star starting her career in style, but she also has some work to do on the leagues opening night. Rookie and top pick Caitlin Clark made her debut for the indiana fever. She scored 20 points, but she also turned the ball over ten times. The fever lost to connecticut by 20. Well, theres many more games to come. All right, all right. Look at that forecast for us. Yeah, it looks great for today. Its going to be a little bit warmer in a few spots. But overall we are seeing much more of the same temperatures that weve seen throughout the week. Mostly 70s and 80s. Whats our saving grace right now is the cool coastline and the slow to clear fog thats kind of moderating our temperatures. Its going to be dry and sunny ahead as this weather continues into the weekend, but slightly cooler and more clouds moving in. We are seeing some clouds to start in san jose, but it will be clearing out quickly and throughout the afternoon well head for the upper 70 and it will be a really nice day. Check out the 7day forecast. Its already up at the bottom of the screen. Well hit a high of 81 today in san jose, 79 in morgan hill, los gatos, 82 and in concord, 80 degrees oakland will see a high of 71 and 64. In San Francisco, while in the upper 70s, for the north bay, we see those numbers for tomorrow come down even more with highs in the low 70s from napa to santa rosa and in san mateo will be in the upper 60s. And then looking ahead for the end of the week on friday, its going to be really nice. So as were taking a look at our overall trend here, we are seeing High Pressure in control. Now thats keeping it warm and sunny. But then going into the weekend were going to see a low dipping into the pacific northwest. And thats going to shift our wind direction and may even develop some showers and thunderstorms over the sierra. And were going to get more clouds and some breezy winds in spots. Look at those highs going from low 80s today to upper 70s for the weekend. And well see that continue into the middle of next week. Mike you still have that alert for the bay bridge. We do i mean lots of lights. And there is a closure. The off ramp on grand avenue off of west 80. At least one truck was using it, but not a lot of traffic is affected by this closure. But there is a well, a big rice spill, not fuel spill. They do still have to clean up the thousands of pounds of rice over here. Were looking at the flashing lights on the approach, so you can see it as youre coming down the east shore freeway right there. But dont worry, the approaches to the bay bridge are all open and theyre flowing. Theres a typical pattern as we start to see a little more traffic there and a little bit of slowing just because of the morning commute. Again, the off ramp, though, to west grand is closed there from the bay bridge clearing for highway 24. I think their crew might be cleared early. Well watch for that through lafayette. Back to you. Thanks mike. Coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area response. Bad news. You make it to your destination while flying, but your baggage does not. Heres good news the Airline Might pay you for your missing essentials if you ask. Im consumer investigator chris chmura. I wines delivered 99. 42 of checked bags on time. Thats great, but that left over 0. 58 is still a ton of late bags. More than 200,000 a month. On the upside, Alaska Airlines website, for example, says most bags are located within 48 hours. Still, thats two days of downside traveling without your stuff. Lets keep reading, though. The very next section says get reimbursed on essentials and then it tells you how to keep your paid receipts for any travel essentials you buy while your bag is missing, such as toiletries and clothing. Next, present your receipts at the Airport Baggage Service office where you filed your report. Other airlines do this too. Its in their contract of carriage. That long jargony agreement you never read but accept every time you buy an airline ticket. Lets look at two things whats essential and how much money youll get. Essential is essentially up to you in the airline to hash out, say youre traveling for business. You have a fair argument that replacing a business suit is essential, even if its expensive. Say youre traveling to a beach vacation. An Airline Might balk at buying that business suit, but a bathing suit you have a pretty good case for the airline to buy you a new one on their dime. The 21st annual School Bus Trip for education to sacramento. So im bob redell will take you live here to san jose with the issues facing teacherand members ofs head to our State Capitol in the fight for better schooling. Plus, california wants your help to get rid of the gas tax and theyll pay you up to 400 if you help them do that. Im going to show you the fine print, though. Also, nurses at some of San Franciscos largest hospitals consider scheduling a strike, an update on their demands, and the renewed effort for a deal ahead of a looming deadline. This is today in the bay and this is now wednesday morning. Had to think about it for a second. Good morning. Its 530. Im laura garcia and im Marcus Washington. Lets get caught up on that forecast this morning. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking a mild start to those temperatures this morning. Yeah. And a few more clouds as well. Weve seen the low clouds and fog near the coastline. Some of our inland areas waking up to a clear sky this morning. Were at 57 degrees in palo alto. San rafael is at 52 degrees, and were seeing a temperature of 53 in San Francisco. In san jose, as youre heading out, its in the mid 50s. And looking at martinez and the trend throughout the morning. Eventually its going to clear out temperatures going from mid 50s to mid 60s by lunchtime. And eventually making it up to 77 there in fremont, 78 degrees, 78 in Mountain View and also 78 in santa rosa. Really Beautiful Day ahead. Well talk about the weekend coming up. And, mike, youre still tracking that closure near the bay bridge. Yeah. So folks, approaching the bay bridge down the east shore freeway are going to see these flashing lights. Carey, let me put some folks at ease. This is only affecting one off ramp. You see, theres a big rig there. It is only affecting the off ramp to west grand. And maritime off of the east shore freeway. Very small portion of the drive, but that one truck is affected and its stuck there until they can clear it. 73,000 pounds of truck. Its carrying a rice. The better news is i dont think theres a spill. I think they just wanted us to know that detail about how heavy that truck is. The arrows show who that affects folks going down off the berkeley curve and then exiting onto the city streets near the port. If youre heading to the bay bridge toll plaza, theres no problem. Theres just more company. The rest of the bay shows a pretty typical build pretty much up in this area of the map. The south here is just fine. Back to you. Thanks mike. Now to a live look at our states capitol, where a push for better education will be front and center today. It comes as teachers in the south bay plan to rally for better pay today in the bays bob redell. Joining us live from san jose state as leaders there prepare to travel to sacramento today. Bob yeah. Good morning to you, marcus and laura. This will be the 21st annual School Bus Trip for education. Its put on by senator dave cortezs office. Of course, of san jose. Hes already in sacramento. But these are people youre talking about members of the community, teachers who will be bussing up. Theres going to have four busses. So about a couple of hundred people. Substantial number of people heading up to sacramento. A little bit later this morning. As i mentioned, its the 21st annual event. This is the video from the trip back in 2019. Now these annual excursions, theyre an opportunity for participants to learn about pending legislation surrounding education, also, the trip always takes place after the governor releases their revised budgets, which governor suggested he pledged to dip into a Rainy Day Fund to protect funding for k through 12. However, funding for csu or uc could be at risk. We got kristin brown. Shes a teacher at guadalupe elementary in here in the south bay. Good morning to you. This is not your first School Bus Trip for education. No, no. What do you what is the issue or the issues that are concerning you most this year . Well as a teacher, im watching our students through the elementary system. Im a special education teacher, but were observing and by middle school were losing a lot in literacy with our students. Theyre just not putting down those tablets, picking up books. So were trying to come up with innovative ways to get books into students hands again. So im to talk to our leaders about some thoughts i have towards that. And working with our School Communities and in their communities to get books into these kids hands and get those tablets out for our phones out for a while. Realistically, do you think the money is there to make what you want to have happen happen, i do, but the money i really want, of course, for special education, its just not coming through the way it needs to, right . As a special educator, we are starved for more teachers. We need more support. Fiscal support definitely is what we need to lean into. I would love to see an investment into education by the state of california because it certainly pays in the future. How effective do you think these trips are . When it comes . Youre obviously trying to send a message to the legislators in sacramento. Yes, i think its a its a great way to hear from our other leaders throughout the state about what theyre doing in their communities. It gives us ideas to bring back to our own communities. It also gives us a voice. I think we often forget that we have these leaders that will sit down and listen to us. I sat down with senator cortez a couple of years ago to express a deep concern about the use of prone restraint in our education system, and now its senate bill 483 and a ban on prone restraints. This is something that impacted my son when he was nine years old. So and weve seen fatalities in the school system. So we need i, i respect that this is an opportunity to not only hear from our leaders, but to have our leaders hear from the community. Christian thank you very much. Have a safe bus ride up there. It was nice speaking with you also happening in the south bay this morning, a rally of teachers in the los gatossaratoga high school union, Saratoga Union high school district. Theyre talking about pay. So later this morning, before School Sports starts, they plan to rally outside los gatos and saratoga high schools to try to convince that district that they should be paid more. In a press release, the Teachers Union says that they rank dead last for the percent of total outgo compared to other teachers in santa clara county, and that many of their teachers need to supplement their income with a second job. So well be following both of these events and bring those to you throughout the morning. Reporting live here in a parking garage in san jose state, where we got a few busses actually pulling up right now. Bob redell today in the back, a busy one at that. Thank you very much, bob. Well, state leaders want to ditch one big hurdle for people trying to make it in the bay. Californias gas tax. Were all affected by it. Theyre actually paying people as they try to figure out a new alternative. Kris sanchez joins us now. Some of this is due to fears that gas tax revenues may soon completely evaporate, right . Yeah. That is coming down the road. So when we are at the gas pump watching the dollar number go up, up, up, its really little consolation to know that the gas tax is paying for road maintenance, about 0. 58 per gallon. But one problem with that is that as more people transition to electric cars, that means fewer dollars for road repairs. Now check out this Pilot Program the state is launching and is looking for about 800 drivers to participate for six months starting in august. You drive as you usually do. Take a survey at the beginning. Take a survey at the end. The difference is these drivers will pay their taxes by the mile instead of by the gallon. Participating drivers could earn up to 400, and they will be reimbursed for any gas taxes or electric vehicle Registration Fees they pay, just to make sure that theyre not getting double dipped. Now, heres why the state wants to rethink highway and road repair funding. 80 of that comes from fuel taxes. And while we feel like were paying more than ever when we fill up that Funding Source is actually shrinking. Electric vehicle drivers do pay a Registration Fee to fund road repairs, but its about a third of what gas fueled drivers pay, according to the la times. And lets not forget that coming up in 2035, we wont even be able to buy new gas vehicles in california. So if you want to participate in this Pilot Program to try to help the state come up with a better system, go to ca road change. Com. California has been looking for an alternative to the gas tax for years, but as you say, its time to put the pedal to the metal right . Its interesting, but its a limited amount of time. In august you said yeah, limit six months starting in august and only 800 people. So i mean youre going to drive as you usually do, right . But itll be interesting to see, see, a lot of us, you know, have to pay for gas and then we dont drive very far, but were still paying the same amount. Or a lot of people commute or take the kids or whatnot. Yeah exactly. Carpool. Carpool. Carpool. Oh, if i can find somebody to get up that early, i would. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Thank you. Thanks, chris. Well, happening now, some nurses at some of the San Francisco major Health Facilities holding a strike. This is an authorization vote. Now, the nurses work at places including zuckerberg general, laguna honda, the county jail, several city and county clinics as well. This is all tied to the department of Public Health. The union represents more than 2000 workers. Leaders say that contract talks are ongoing, but the current contract expires at the end of june. The issue centers around many things, including staffing. The department of Public Health has moved more and more towards hiring contracted registry staff, who come for short periods of time. Theyre paid a very large premium, and they take all of those wages directly out of the city and contribute them in other economies. So its not fiscally responsible. Its also not clinically responsible. We know from the research that that that when you have a the more continuity you have on a care team, the better the patient outcomes. Now, the department of Public Health promised a response yesterday, but we never received one. They recently told the examiner that theyre encouraged by the recent progress in hiring new nurses. With 166 new hires since december and another 50 planned by the end of next month. A follow up for you this morning on plans to provide new Affordable Housing for farmworkers on the peninsula. The project calls for 40 new affordable units spread over two Housing Developments in Half Moon Bay in a meeting that ended after midnight, City Planners have now approved that project. Last years mushroom farm shooting rampage first brought poor Living Conditions really into the spotlight. More recently, Governor Newsom threatened legal action if there was no progress on that plan. 544 right now, taking a live look out in san jose, looking nice and bright for us this morning. But you wonder, like, okay, how does it feel outside . Well, dont worry if you havent put anything on yet. Chiaras got you covered, carrie, but its not too bad out there. Starting out today. Bad . Yeah, were starting out with our layers this morning. You need a jacket to start, and then as it warms up, its going to be short sleeve weather today. Its some of our warmer days. Were going to see this week. While the coastline will still be cool low clouds and drizzle continues there and the weekend will be slightly cooler with more wind kicking up as youre getting up and getting out the door for school this morning in hayward, itll be mostly cloudy and 55 degrees at drop off time. At pick up time, its a comfortable 70 degrees with sunshine. Really nice weather today. Well talk about the weekend coming up. Mike, youre still seeing the changes near the bay bridge . Yes. Some are expected like this. The build up as the metering lights have been on for a few minutes. Unfortunately no change for this. Those flashing lights on the off ramp west 80, the berkeley curve. Thats open. Thats fine. The bay bridge is fine. The backup pretty standard. But if you are taking that freeway and exiting at west grand or maritime, that off ramp is still closed because of a big rig thats been there since about 4 00 in the morning. And we may have that there for another couple of hours. Well see if they can get an appropriate size tow truck there. No need for any worries for the rest of the bay. We are looking at a little bill for north 101 coming through san jose. Pretty standard pattern there for the east bay. And a note as we look ahead were going to go southbound 17 just like yesterday. Theyll have a left lane closed as youre going or you have your outside lane closed as youre heading south. And that caused quite a backup in the afternoon anytime after nine this morning. It may be an impact and as we get closer to 2 00, so the afternoon hours, the first couple of hours, well have that crew and then they should clear before the rest of that evening commute. Scott mcgrew joins us now. Politics can be rough and tumble, but usually biden, you know, he holds his tongue. I think you could make the argument, laura, that biden was elected because he was sort of a vanilla choice in a rocky road world, but can he get reelected . Trump calls biden names all the time. Biden, though getting a bit more aggressive with a simple label for trump loser. But i was told that other guy, that loser. I think hes having trouble. Biden made the comment last night at a celebration for the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies in washington. Trump, meantime, spent another day in court where his lawyers crossexamined his former lawyer, michael cohen, who testified against his former boss about hush money paid to an adult film actress. We believe thats it for the prosecution witnesses. The big question now who, if anyone, will the defense put on the stand . Maybe trump himself. Do you plan to testify . Mr. Trump . Thank you very much. As you know, im under a gag order now, the gag order does not prevent trump from answering that reporters question. Whether hell be a witness certainly doesnt bar him from being a witness. Its not unusual for trump to misinterpret things to his benefit, he said. For years, the irs would not allow him to release his tax returns the to the public the way the candidates usually do because of an audit. But the irs has no such prohibition. Speaker of the house mike johnson, who often talks about the rule of law, was at the hush money trial tuesday, saying donald trump is his good friend. I called President Trump and told him i wanted to be here myself to call out what is a travesty of justice. And i think everybody around the country can see that a President Trump is a friend, and i wanted to be here to support him. There was a primary in nebraska yesterday. I bring this up because none of the current republicans in Office Running for reelection to congress were endorsed by the state republican party. The current republicans are traditional republicans. Their opponents, maga republicans, secretary of state Antony Blinken met with ukrainian president zelensky yesterday. Theres worry Congress Delayed help for ukraine for so long. The russians now have the upper hand. Theyre bombarding ukrainian cities with missiles and bombs. Zelensky says hes running short on ammunition. Commanders on the ground say they can fire off just one artillery round for every 20 incoming rounds from the russians. I have come to ukraine with a message. You are not alone. The United States has been by your side from day one. We are with you today and we will stay by your side until ukraines security, its sovereignty, its ability to choose its own path is guaranteed and moments ago, the Biden Campaign notified the Trump Campaign that it would agree to two debates, but not debates, run by the nonpartisan commission on president ial debates that usually does those things. The biden camp says it wants the debates in a tv studio where microphones can be turned off when someone speaks out of turn and no studio audience. The trump camp has previously said it will debate anywhere, any time. We are waiting laura, for their reaction. It will be interesting to see. Thank you very much, scott. It is 549 right now. May is Mental Health awareness month, which brings us to an alarming number. Last year, nonprofit Mental Health america found almost 60 of American Kids with major depression do not receive any Mental Health treatment. A bay area nonprofit called karma is trying to reduce that number in the south bay, with its socalled fast program, which stands for families and schools together. This video was produced by the organization fast targets kids who live in low income or violent neighborhoods in san jose, and we recruit these families to a ten week, evidence based intervention where we really work with the kids on bolstering their empathy, improving their community skill, their communication skills, feeling heard and seen and then developing new ways of interacting with peers that, engender nonviolent relations and nonviolent communication. The ceo of karma says the fast Program Works by adding 70 of kids who participate live with a feeling of hope and plans for the future. The ceo says. Theres a couple of reasons many kids cant get help. Theres a shortage of Mental Health providers who can afford living in the bay area, and Insurance Coverage is usually not long enough for people to get better. Well this is a big day for niners fans. It is a light start to the day, and were going to see temperatures in the low 50s. There a chilly morning, but its going to shape up to be a really nice and comfortable afternoon. The 7day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. Heres a look at our hour by hour temperatures. So were starting out with low to mid 50s this morning all around the bay area. But then as we approach noon it will be in the upper 60s for oakland and moraga and in hayward, 68 degrees, 64 in san mateo. And then going into the afternoon, you see how quickly it warms up farther north in ukiah and clear lake, 91 degrees there, while santa rosa will be in the upper 70s, and these will be about our high temperatures as it starts to turn breezy. Then the temperatures drop once again, and its going to be windy out there tonight for the giants game. And at first pitch, were going to see temperatures in the low 60s dropping back to the mid 50s as that clouds the clouds and the fog rolls right back in. So there will be some clearing today except for along the immediate coastline. This is our typical may gray setup. And we sometimes see that fog rolling into some of our valleys, like in Santa Clara Valley as well as napa and sonoma valleys. But then looking ahead, the dry weather continues. High pressure is building and its kept us nice. And whats a steady weather pattern here . But as we go into the weekend, this low is going to drop into the pacific northwest. Its going to possibly develop some showers and thunderstorms for the sierra and give us more clouds and slightly cooler temperatures. Looking at ukiah over the next ten days, once again, 90s for today and still pretty hot through friday. But then the weekend into next week those temperatures come down and thats the case in what well see all across the bay area going from 80s to mid 70s. And our mornings will be cooler as well with upper 40s and looking at San Francisco 64 today and a touch warmer tomorrow, but still a nice weekend ahead. And mike overall looks like its an easy drive. Yes, so far everything is moving pretty pleasantly. Were showing perhaps less traffic flow overall for the mornings as we ease in towards summer. Weve seen some graduations at local universities already. We are looking at san jose, the first burst actually starting to ease up a little bit already. No problems for the trivalley. The crash over near the Altamont Pass is not a major issue for the morning commute, and also highway four gentle slowing into concord at a pittsburgh and bay point. Highway 37 a little build. Same thing for richmond on the east shore freeway. Now heres the deal. There is one alert near the bay bridge. It affects a small number of folks for the morning commute here. If you are traveling off the berkeley curve and exit to maritime and grand, that off ramp is closed by that rig that they still have to clear from that overcrossing Everything Else moves.
