All of the tents are down tonight at uc berkeley, ending one of the longest running propalestinian encampments that have taken over u. S. Campuses over the past few months. We realized that what we get a free palestine to all the amazing kind of get from the university in terms of our demands being met, have kind of been met to some extent. Free. Free palestine. Free. What the protesters got from uc berkeley is a letter from the universitys chancellor, where she promised to make a Public Statement supporting an immediate and permanent ceasefire in gaza. A few months ago, it would have been surprising to get this document. The fact that i get to say theres more to win. There is still another fight. There is still another campaign thats within reach. The protesters did not get what they ultimately want from the uc system. Total divestment in israel and a system wide call for a ceasefire in gaza. But in that letter, chancellor chryst wrote the uc system does not support war. End quote. We should examine whether uc berkeleys Investments Continue to align with our values or should be modified in order to do so. She also made it clear shes in alignment with the uc system, which does not support a divestment in israel as a nation. The final vote of the board was three to nothing, with two supervisors excused from the proceeding. The county now on record for consolidation of the recall election on the same day as the president ial election, november 5th. Supporters say it makes sense for a lot of reasons. We have a voter turnout on average of about 20 of folks who come out for voter special elections and 80 for a president ial election. Another consideration is cost consolidation means saving perhaps tens of millions of dollars for a county that is 68 million in the red right now, spending 20 million on a standalone special election is something that we just cannot afford here in Alameda County. We want our county services to be protected. Many who spoke today supported the idea of an earlier standalone election, saying da prices soft on crime policies are costing lives. She has failed. Everybody knows it. The sooner the better. We cannot wait till november to do something about this. The people of Alameda County need help. Now, just to add one more wrinkle to the story, theres a group here today that not only doesnt want this election to be on november 5th, they dont want it to happen at all. They say that the way this got onto the ballot in the first place was illegal. A group called the campaign to protect the wind of pamela price says theyre planning to go to court to stop the recall election. They say the registrar of voters took too long to verify the signatures on the recall petition. They violated a key provision of the charter that gave them ten days to verify those signatures. In San Francisco, city supervisors officially becoming the first in the nation to ban firefighter uniforms that may cause cancer. The final vote was this afternoon. The issue is now the issue is with the jacket and pants that they wear. Our Investigative Unit found that they contain chemicals known as pfas. Those chemicals are supposed to help the clothing repel Flammable Liquids and resist extreme heat. But research has shown that absorbing those compounds through your skin can be dangerous. The next step in this ban is for the mayor to sign off on it, which hes expected to do. The city would then have two years to phase out the old uniforms and purchase new ones that dont contain those pfas. While San Franciscos five top candidates for mayor will debate the citys issues on monday, but theyre going to do it on two separate stages, mayor breed today pulled out of the debate planned by the Political Advocacy Group together sf action. She cited concerns that the deep pocketed group is too closely connected to her opponent, mark farrell. Now, breed claims his campaign has, quote, unduly influenced the debate and described it as a, quote tainted beyond repair. The occasion mayor breed instead will be holding a separate, moderated conversation on the same day, and time with another mayoral opponent, longtime supervisor aaron peskin. Now, the original debate will still include three of breeds reelection challengers farrell, who we just told you about, daniel lurie, which both are polling close to, behind breed supervisor asha sapphire will also debate those men. San jose is one step closer to naming a new police chief. Community feedback meetings have ended. The city is now accepting applications for the position, and Community Leaders will then interview the candidates. In late june, the city council will make a final decision in the fall. Several city stakeholders have different opinions, of course, on what the chiefs Top Priorities should be, from Crime Fighting and Community Policing to staffing and homelessness. San jose is also facing competition from other big cities. La and houston are also on the hunt for a chief. So as a city, were going to have to be really competitive. Were going to have to also incentivize and in order to attract a top notch police chief, theres a good chance it could be an internal hire. San jose hasnt appointed an outside police chief since 1976. Dozens of red lobster locations across the country are on the chopping block, and that includes two in the bay area. Golden state will take to the court next season, but theyll host a block party with e40, kehlani, plo and others at thrive city from 2 to 6 p. M. On saturday, and that party will be moderated by nbc sports bay areas zina keita in San Francisco, ian cull nbc bay area news saturday should be fun. Thank you ian, we are back in 60s up next. They say its humiliating. People with guide dogs left in a lurch by uber and lyft drivers. We investigate. Plus, Staggering Number two mill. Thats the median home price for one bay area county, double what it was just six years ago. Were going to break down whats driving prices up. And here is a sneak preview of tomorrow mornings commute. Mist and drizzle close to San Francisco when temperatures climb into the 80s inland, and our and say rideshare drivers are seeing their dogs and canceling their rides. But theyre not just any dogs, theyre service dogs. As you might know, those dogs are critical to their safety. They say what uber and lyft drivers are doing is humiliating and illegal. Lets bring in our investigative reporter, candice nguyen. Candice uber and lyft insist their policies prohibit this kind of discrimination, but we spoke to riders who say those policies arent effective and theyre getting stranded. Annalisa de leonardo navigates the world a little differently. We love thrifting, going to used bookstores through the eyes of cousteau, he means the world. A trained guide dog, the san jose special ed teacher says the four year old Labrador Retriever gets them from one place to another safely. I am considered legally blind. He is literally my eyes. He is without him. Several times i would have been a pancake. Because of that condition. De leonardo cant see overhead obstacles or curbs on the ground. I also cannot see if cars are about to hit me to get to and from work. This teacher takes a rideshare every day with cousteau that is, if they can find a driver who will accept him. Its anxiety provoking because its not always a great experience. When they deny me. De leonardos rideshare apps show denial after denial. I dont think a dog, hes a service dog. Thank you. When confronting the drivers, excuse after excuse, it says, why arent you taking me . I dont want to mess up my car. Its a service, though. Its a lyft. You have to. It happens so often. De leonardo now records the interactions. A dog is not allowed in my car. Its a service dog. No i understand, but, you know, i already mentioned in my car refusing to accommodate service dogs is a violation of the americans with disabilities act, which prohibits discrimination based on disability. According to both lyft and uber, allergies, religious objections and a fear of dogs are not valid reasons for their drivers to refuse. A rider with a Service Animal on a human level, what does it feel like . Like im less than im not wanted in society. De leonardo is not alone. Linda mcleod from willow glen has been denied as well. As i was reaching for the handle for the door, he got out and said, oh no, no, no, no pets , no dogs. He mentioned that, uber has this this program called uber pet. In 2021, uber introduced uber pet, an option that allows riders to bring along Furry Friends for an extra 5. But mcleod says the program has made the problem worse for blind people, Service Animals, she says, are not pets. Drivers think its an option. Hes the same as a wheelchair, mcleod says. Its illegal to make blind people pay more money to ride with their Service Animals, so that means its not being provided to me at the same level as the service for other people who dont have a disability. The Investigative Unit reached out to uber and lyft with these concerns. Uber said discrimination on our platform is unacceptable, and it takes appropriate action, which can include deactivation of a drivers account. Lyft told us it requires all drivers to accommodate passengers traveling with Service Animals and it asked riders to report issues immediately and then i usually get a 5 gift card. And so sometimes ive just stopped reporting. Seven years ago, both lyft and uber settled lawsuits brought by the National Federation of the blind. As a result, uber said it reminds drivers of their contractual and legal obligations to transport riders with Service Animals. But de leonardo says these actions are still clearly not enough against lyfts policy to refuse him. Lyft. You cant say no because hes a helper dog. No. Okay, im going to report to you , okay . I think theyre not making it a big enough issue. I think theyre theyre trying to be nice to their drivers and give them a second chance. Im the same as you, and i deserve the same rights. And i just want to get to work with the Investigative Unit. Candice nguyen, nbc, bay area news. Candice, thank you. We will continue to stay on this story. If you have a story for candice or anyone else in our Investigative Unit, give us a call. You see the information on the screen. 888996 tips. Or you can visit our website, nbc bay area. Com investigations. All right. Lets bring in rob mayeda. Talk a little bit about the coming days. And the days have been sunny, but weve been seeing some fluctuation in temperatures. Yeah, were seeing right now San Francisco, the fog rolling in some drizzle and might see some patchy dense areas of fog for the morning commute. So watch out for that. But otherwise inland areas are going to start to see a warm up over the next couple of afternoons. As we take you into the microclimate forecast around San Francisco. You see it there. At least the bottoms of the downtown buildings, the tops disappearing into the clouds 53 degrees and not much change in temperatures from 24 hours ago. And its cool out towards walnut creek. We still have that onshore breeze moving through contra costa county, and eventually some low clouds into Solano County as well. And right now in san jose, mostly clear, but by the morning we will see the low clouds fill in once again. Some spotty areas of drizzle ongoing near the coast. Its the inland valleys north bay, east bay, Santa Clara Valley that will have the chance of 80s for the next couple of afternoons. And for the weekend, things will be dry, but more wind and a little more cooling as we head towards sunday. So tomorrow morning, notice how the low clouds spill inland. What were seeing right now in San Francisco eventually heads out through the Carquinez Strait and banks up there along the Altamont Pass for the morning. But then, just like we had today, sunshine, inland temperatures climbing into the 70s and 80s. But on the coast, a different story as this is may, but this kind of looks like our summer microclimates as youre about to see with their afternoon temperatures. We begin with temperatures in the mid 50s clouds and then giving way to sunshine inland around lunchtime, mid 70s around livermore and san jose. Now were starting to see a few more 80s popping up around livermore and san jose. 90s for ukiah and clear lake. This trend will continue into thursday, then by the weekend we begin to see some cooling daytime highs dropping a little bit on saturday, and odds are by sunday, thats when things are really going to start to cool down. No rain, except you can head out to the sierra. You might see some isolated thunderstorms there. Its that system dropping in by sunday afternoon, which should bring more wind and a little more cooling for the second half of the weekend. So morning fog and coastal clouds continue in the San Francisco forecast. Most places at their warmest tomorrow and thursday, and overall pretty pleasant. Just trending a little bit cooler for those weekend plans coming up next weekend. Its like country club weather just nice and mild. It is not too hot, not too cold. Thanks, rob. Okay, up next from quarterback to pitcher brock purdy threw out the first pitch of tonights giants game. Did it help the team against the mighty do to prevent more vandalism at the facility in fremont. Right there at the tesla factory. This comes after someone damaged several parked cars in teslas parking lot overnight. Police were called to the facility at around 2 30 a. M. And found several parked cars with slashed tires. Sticker shock that is also a daunting milestone. The median cost of a home in Santa Clara County has now reached the 2 million mark. Thats according to the Santa Clara County association of realtors. Realtors we spoke to say theyre seeing more buyers who are looking to make a springtime move, but not enough sellers to accommodate them. So the result is multiple offers for almost every property, which of course is driving up prices. I think people are waiting to buy a house, and i think stocks have gone up for people so they have more money to spend. Im seeing 50 down payments. Im seeing 100, as always, all cash. Heres another stunner. It was only six years ago that the median price for a home in Santa Clara County first reached the 1 million mark. Thats a good roi right there. Up next, were going to show you what Shohei Ohtani did to the giants tonight. And Caitlin Clarks wnba debut. Stay Caitlin Clarks wnba debut. This is astros pitcher runl blanco. Interesting here. He got thrown out of the game in the fourth inning for an illegal substance on his glove. Remember the astros have a history of cheating there. Eighth inning brett rooker with the r. B. I. Single. And this is a nice comeback by the as. This tied the game at one apiece, but houston would win this game. Bottom of the 10th inning.
