Underway for google, the demands theyre making as thousands descend on the bay area for the company event, plus water bills likely to rise for hundreds of thousands of bay area customers. The crucial vote happening today and the possible impact on your budget. Good morning. Thanks for joining us for our midday newscast im marcus washington. Well, today google is hosting its i o Developers Conference. And as thousands of people arrive at shoreline amphitheater for that event, protesters are planning to take advantage of the visibility. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez joining us live from Mountain View this midday with the propalestinian protests. Chris well, hi there, marcus. I want to show you here behind me, this is the main gate to get into a shoreline amphitheater where the google i o Developers Conference is happening. You see all those folks standing around. Thats because these protesters succeeded in shutting this main gate down. People had to turn around and go into another entrance about a quarter mile down the road. So clearly there was a disruption to the top of this event. These protesters were chanting, no tech for genocide. They are against the use of ai and Cloud Computing technology by google and their contract with the Israeli Government and the israeli military. They used a lot of the imagery that we know from google to make their points. They also object to googles photos use for mass surveillance, which they say will likely come back to haunt us here at home because google cannot get away with celebrating with bright colors and rainbows. And, you know, this sort of conference thats all about the positives that google is doing for society when at the same time, google is engaging in extremely shady and violent business by fueling a military that is committing a genocide that has already killed over 40,000. Why would they not use this technology thats being used on the Palestinian People against people back here in the united states, against our black and brown communities who are being pushed out because of google, because of the tech bubble, because of gentrification. They will use this technology. Be right back here. As we are looking from video over the scene from sky ranger, you can see that the attendees were rerouted and a lot of them were sent about a quarter mile down the road in order to get into the conference. There was a real disruption, though, because all of the security and screening equipment was down here, where we are about a quarter mile away. But you saw as those protesters walked in and then flooded the gates, moved the barricades, and then successfully chained themselves together to form that human chain. I tried to talk to some of the folks who were waiting in line. The attendees. No one really had much to say except for one man who says he supports it. But hes also frustrated. This is nothing new. Ive been working for technology for the last 20 years, and all companies , Big Companies in the united states, have partnerships somehow with israel. I cant say that because google has a company, a Research Team over there is causing this. Obviously, theyre supporting they have a business going on in israel. I understand that, but i cant really say that that is causing anything new now. He went on to say that he supports the protests. He understands what the protesters are trying to do. But he says when it reaches the level of disrupting regular people, its just too much. He was frustrated with the delay in getting into the conference, frustrated with the delay in graduations and commencements across the country as well. Now, you might remember that in the last couple of weeks, google fired 50 employees for protesting the war in gaza. They are protesting the work of project nimbus as well. Meanwhile, a bay area family wants answers about doctor holly sheikholeslami, a Sutter Health doctor who was on a medical mission in gaza and now cannot get out. So the protest here has wrapped up. The protesters unchained themselves. They are now making their way about two blocks down where they are going to gather for a public rally. Anyone can join there, but they felt pretty empowered by the fact that they were able to disrupt this really big Developers Conference, disrupt google, and shut down this main gate. And they did it just really smoothly. And it was it was it happened before you knew it was happening in Mountain View. Kris sanchez, nbc, bay area news. All right, chris, thank you. Well, turning now to new developments in san jose, a shooting that shut down a freeway off ramp has turned deadly. This happened thursday at 280 and mclaughlin avenue. This is near the 2. 8 101 interchange. While the investigation has led to the shutdown of that area for several hours, police now confirming one man was taken to the hospital and investigators say they learned he died sunday. Anyone with any information is asked to call police. This is san joses 13th homicide this year. Well. Former president. Hush money trial continues in new york. And his former socalled fixer back on the witness stand, michael cohen, the former longtime lawyer for mr. Trump, claims that he was directed to pay star Stormy Daniels to hide an alleged affair she had with trump. But mr. Trump is charged with faking Business Records to hide payments so it wouldnt hurt the 2016 president ial campaign. Now today, cohen spoke on his 13 month prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to federal tax crimes in 2018. Now those charges werent tied to his work with mr. Trump, but it was around the time of their relationship that broke up and cohen started publicly accusing the president of several crimes. The president also had a show of support from Top Republicans this morning, House Speaker mike johnson and other gop allies went to court with the former president. The louisiana lawmaker spoke to reporters this is after hearing some of the testimony, calling the trial a sham. This is the fifth week that President Trump has been in court for this sham of a trial. They are doing this intentionally to keep him here and keep him off of the campaign trail. And i think everybody in the country can see that for what it is now. The House Speaker also criticized the gag order in place. This is meant to keep trump from attacking witnesses, jurors or court staff and their families. Trump was already fined and also faces possible jail time if he keeps violating that order. Well, new overnight the top u. S. Auto safety regulator opening an investigation. And this is into waymo. The national Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into 22 incidents in which companies cars were involved in collisions or may have violated traffic laws. 17 of those crashes are part of the investigation. On the waymo, vehicles hit stationary objects such as gates or even parked vehicles. No injuries were reported, but the agency says that waymos automated driving system was engaged in each of those incidents. This comes as local leaders have been expressing concern over waymos expansion of testing its cars in peninsula cities, and today we will find out if hundreds of thousands of people in the south bay will have to pay more for their water. Nbc bay areas bob redell explains just how much more customers would have to pay. Later this afternoon, the board of directors for valley water will vote on this rate increase. This is a rate increase that the district says they need to help pay for. Among other things, the districts largest reservoir. The retrofit of that. Heres what a rate increase would look like 12. 9 for residents in the northern part of santa clara county. Thats about 9 a month. Those who live in the south county could see increases of 1 to just over 3 a month. Valley waters biggest project is the seismic retrofit of the anderson dam in morgan hill. Its a project that has ballooned in cost to 2. 3 billion. Labor and materials all those costs have skyrocketed in recent years, so of course we have to pay for those and we see those increases. But the reality is our board has to balance the idea of, hey, you know, what are the charges for water here in santa clara county, but also preparing for the future. We cant let these Infrastructure Projects be delayed anymore. The longer we wait, the more they end up costing and it ends up costing us more down the road. So really, this is the most Cost Effective way to get these projects done is to get them done. Now, the federal government mandated that anderson reservoir, which was built in 1950, be retrofitted after studies found the structure could fail in a major earthquake and cause widespread flooding and destruction across santa clara valley. Bob redell nbc bay area news. Well, a highly anticipated decision could be on the deck for leaders in Half Moon Bay today. The city is Planning Commission may vote to move forward on the Affordable Housing for farmworkers. That meeting comes after governor gavin newsom issued a warning just last week. It comes after the deadly mass shooting last year, highlighting poor Living Conditions for farmworkers on the peninsula. In response, the city proposed building a complex for senior farmworkers, but never approved it. Well, wildfires causing changes in our earths soil chemistry, thats all. Researchers also found that better techniques are needed to monitor changes in the soil. They say that monitoring is likely the key in informing professionals on how to treat Drinking Water sourced from those burned areas support reforestation and protect workers against toxins during cleanup. You said it was going to be another beautiful one. Yes. And it looks great out there as were getting ready to head out for lunch and enjoying the rest of the day. But were also seeing all of our microclimates in full effect. Were seeing our usual may gray over the Golden Gate Bridge right now, as the low clouds will be slow to clear there. While much of the rest of the city is getting some sunshine. And then we had farther inland to san jose, where were also all clear, sunny, and temperatures are going to be gradually warming up here. Were right now in the mid 60s and headed for the upper 70s, a very quick warm up, but our temperatures very much like yesterdays. Well talk more about if theres any changes in our forecast. Heading closer to the weekend. Thats coming up in a few minutes marcus. All right. Looking forward to it. Thanks, gary. Well happening today San Francisco supervisors. Theyre holding a second reading. This is on the recently approved ordinance to ban the socalled forever chemicals in firefighters gear. As our Investigative Unit reports, studies have shown that the gear firefighters wear is made of materials called pfas. This is proven to raise cancer risk. Theyre actually called forever chemicals because they dont easily break down once the skin absorbs it. San francisco firefighters are already testing alternative for free fabrics. They say they believe they are just as effective now you can view that entire story under the Investigative Unit section of our home page. Also today, San Francisco leaders, they will vote on closing a mile long stretch of the great highway extension to vehicles. Now theyve been talking about this part of the freeway shutting it down. Anyway, between sloat and skyline boulevard for some time. This is all part of the project aimed at protecting San Franciscos shoreline from rising sea levels. The city has considered closing that roadway since 2012. If given the green light, that source or that change, i should say, would go into effect in 2026. Well, a tragic scene playing out in florida. Well, may is Mental Health Awareness Month and later this afternoon, governor newsom. He will visit san mateo county. This is to update his effort to transform californias Mental Health system. It comes as medical experts find new links between the head and the heart. A recent report by the American Heart Association found that social isolation and loneliness can actually lead to heart inflammation and heart disease. One cardiologist with El Camino Health says that in general, loneliness can trigger the brains sympathetic nerve system. Controlling our fight or flight response, and the sympathetic system leads to higher blood pressure. It leads to higher cholesterol, at least a higher blood sugar. All these factors, which we know are directly related to the development of heart disease. So simply its not just being lonely, but its all the mental aspects of being lonely. So yeah, may not affect everybody, but theres a much higher likelihood of a lonely individual, of an isolated individual to feel those, those mental stimulus which then lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. He also says that we will all want to manage our blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol levels. He says you can do that by exercising a balanced diet, no smoking and limit the alcohol or better yet, cut it all out entirely. Well, happening today, Public Health advocates, they will gather in San Francisco and a call to action. This is to prevent drug overdoses. Health experts will join Community Leaders to address the more than 3000 lives lost in the city from opioids since the start of 2020, the calling for more prevention and treatment. And those measures, they say, are worsening the situation. That News Conference is scheduled for 1 00 this afternoon. The Team President , jeff smith, says that the teams name embodies the strength of womens sports right now. You know, as we sat with that name and thought through what that means, through the visible representation of these incredible players coming together on the court, through our community, circling around each other and making sure that we were going to be the ones that show the world whats possible. You know that together we are valkyries. I cant think of anything more powerful. Yeah, im claiming it all right, well, lets claim this. Weve got some more nice weather coming our way. Well be able to celebrate under some sunshine, but we are seeing some spots dealing with the low clouds and fog and already a wide range in temperatures. Were in the mid 60s in san jose. Its in the upper 50s as you head out in oakland and its in the low 60s for san rafael and in San Francisco. But take a look at our highs for today. Were going to be in the upper 70s for the High Temperature in san jose. And a lot of these numbers are what weve seen the past couple of days. Upper 70s, low 80s, just a touch warmer in a few spots like antioch, expecting a high of 81 today and livermore 79. There while in oakland, will be in the upper 60s for an afternoon temperature, and the high will be 62 and Half Moon Bay. Meanwhile, you head over to redwood city. It will be in the low 70s and upper 70s for palo alto in San Francisco, mostly low 60s here, and its going to be breezy, but a little bit more sunshine for the north bay, and well see a high of 77 in santa rosa, as well as novato. Now were going to continue to see the clouds and the fog near the coastline. And even waking up tomorrow morning. We could possibly see some of that developing in some of the valleys from the south bay to the north bay, there may be some low visibility in time for the morning commute, but overall well see it clearing out fairly quickly with the exception of the coast. And were going to see more days like this with High Pressure just off to our west. But there will be a little bit of something to help mix out that fog going into the weekend. An area of low pressure developing across Southern California just off the coast may give us a bit more of a breeze and a slight drop in temperatures take a look at morgan hill. Well be in the mid to upper 70s for the next few days, but then sunday into early next week there is a little bit of a cooldown happening here, but were still not looking at any rain chances and our temperatures going from low to mid 80s to some upper 70s for the weekend, so its going to be really nice for any Outdoor Activities you have planned. And in San Francisco, more of the same clouds, fog, a little bit of sunshine and temperatures will continue to reach into the mid to upper 60s. And then were also looking at more of the same into next week. So nothing major changing here over the next few days. Marcus. All right thanks, gary.
