Im laura garcia. Were going to check the commute with mike in just a little bit. But first lets check the forecast with carrie. Its the same as yesterdays weather starting out, cloudy clearing out and a comfortable afternoon. So were starting out with a live look in oakland this morning as it is mostly cloudy. And so as youre heading out, the door feels cool and our clouds will linger throughout the next several hours. Will be in the mid 50s at 10 00 and then in the low 60s at noon. Were headed for the upper 60s here today. Hayward will see a high of 73 and 83 in fairfield, while morgan hill will hit those High Temperatures in the upper 70s will be in the upper 60s for san mateo and upper 70s for much of the north bay. Tomorrow well bring it up a degree or two for some spots, but overall, were not looking at many changes over the next few days. And mike, youre tracking an issue for the bay bridge commute. I am carrie, so im watching, actually not the backup at the toll plaza because we know thats full by now. Watching this flow of traffic. And it is moving steadily across the bay bridge. And spacing is okay, but getting closer to the city, just past treasure island, where you saw those low clouds. But visibility is fine. We did have a lot of slowing approaching the fifth exit off ramp there. We did have a disabled vehicle and after a crash and it looked like maybe things are going to have trouble clearing. Were watching and things are still moving steadily across that bridge, so well track that for another couple minutes. And hopefully chp will let us know that they did clear that off ramp. And the exit. Ill let you know. Meanwhile, the rest of the bay has a pretty light flow of traffic. The south bay did see some slowing 101 from two 8680 all the way up past the airport. That was a little bit more slowing we typically see, but now its backing off, getting ready for the next slowdown at about 640. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Well breaking news, the top u. S. Auto safety regulator opening an investigation into waymo, the national highway Traffic Safety administration, looking into 22 incidents in which the companys cars were involved in collisions or may have violated traffic laws. 17 crashes are a part of that investigation. Waymo vehicles hit stationary objects such as gates or parked vehicles. No injuries were reported. Now the agency says that waymos automated driving system was engaged in each incident. This comes as local leaders have been expressing concerns over waymos expansion of testing its cars in peninsula cities. New overnight and unannounced visit to ukraine this morning from secretary of state antony blinken. While there, he met with ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and promised that new military aid will make a big difference in ukraines efforts to beat back advancing russian forces. Analysts say. In recent days, Russian Troops have captured somewhere around 50mi■ s of territory. Now to a live look outside of the manhattan courtroom, where former president Donald Trumps criminal hush money trial is taking place, and were learning the speaker of the house, mike johnson, will join trump in court today. It comes as a longtime lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen is expected back on the stand once again. This follows his testimony that the former president directed him to pay adult film star stormy daniels. Cohen says this was all in an effort to cover up an alleged affair before the 2016 president ial election. Today in the bays brie jackson joins us live in washington this morning. And brie cohens testimony certainly highly anticipated. Yeah. Thats right. Good morning laura. So on this stand, for the first time yesterday, Michael Cohen described the payment that he made to stormy daniels, telling the court that mr. Trump directed him to pay off the adult film star. Do you have any messages for donald trump . Former President Trumps former fixer, Michael Cohen, taking the stand, testifying that he was acting on behalf of trump when he made hush money payments to stormy daniels, saying everything required mr. Trumps sign off. Cohen also claiming trump was furious in 2016 when he learned daniels was still trying to sell her story of an alleged sexual encounter with the former president , stating that he told mr. Trump he would pay daniels as part of a nondisclosure agreement, opting to use money from a home equity line of credit, and that mr. Trumps response was along the lines of dont worry, youll get the money back. Trump is accused of falsifying Business Records to cover up a reimbursement to cohen. They have to believe Michael Cohen, the conspirators, donald trump, that they are a potentially breaking the law that they intended. They falsified these documents with the intent to break another law in order to do so. That statement, this has to appear as legitimate. The former president s political allies came to his defense. Im here for the simple reason to show support for a friend. I think this trial is absolutely ridiculous. Thats the most depressing thing ive ever been in mental anguish is trying to be pushed on the republican candidate for the president of the United States this year. Thats all this is. Trump denies the allegations. Theres no crime here. This is four weeks of keeping me from not campaign. Reporter the former president s legal team has attacked cohens credibility and argues hes out for revenge, and in crossexamination, is expected to begin today. The defense is expected to attack Michael Cohen on, among other things, his past convictions. Laura. All right. Now well see it from the other side. Brie. Thanks for the latest. Well, with less than a month away until pride month, the fbi issuing a warning, it says celebrating signs this year could be targets for terror. Now, the bureau says foreign terrorist organizations are possibly planning to commit or inspire violence at pride events or venues. The alert does not name any specific states, cities or celebrations as targets. In its alert, the fbi says that it sees isis promoting antigay rhetoric over the past few years. The bureau urges local Law Enforcement to be on the lookout for threats online, in person or by mail. Now, we did reach out to San Francisco pride. They sent us a statement saying, in part, as always, we take all potential threats seriously and are working closely with all appropriate Law Enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of our events. As in previous years, we will monitor any potential risk and plan accordingly to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for everyone who joins us to celebrate pride. End quote. Now, new details are emerging about a bay area couple with deep political ties who died in a head on crash last friday night in southern california, today in the bays bob redell live for us in Alameda County and bob, what are friends saying about these two women . Who many people are calling remarkable . Good morning to you, marcus. Friends say hopewood and peggy moore were political and social justice warriors who, for those people who didnt have a seat at the table, at least they gave them a voice. Especially here in Alameda County. The two women who were married to each other were on their way home from a concert this past friday night in san diego county, when, sadly, the driver of another car crossed over in their lane and hit the jeep they were in. Both women were killed, as was the driver and passenger in the other vehicle. The couple ran their own Political Consulting firm called hope action change. Moore ran the 2014 Election Campaign for former oakland mayor libby schaaf. She was political director for hillary campaign, Hillary Clintons president ial primary campaign. Here in california. She met her wife while both campaigned for barack obama back in 2008, and she was the one that that helped to win the golden state for him, she helped on the first Hillary Clinton campaign in a campaign that really had to have, a top notch organizing strategy. They went to peggy moore. These were two almost twin flames that, couldnt bear to be apart in this life or in the other. And they really just had to be together when, when they left. Us congresswoman barbara lee of oakland recognized the couple on social media, writing, quote, together they organized change hearts and minds and help to create a world where who you love doesnt limit your freedoms. Both peggy and hope made an impact on our community, on our city, on our state, and on our nation that will be felt for generations to come. Reporting live here in Alameda County, bob redell. Today in the bay. Seems like they left a Lasting Impact on a lot of folks. All right, bob, thank you. Well, new at six. Well, i mean, this is pretty much a San Francisco shot. If you ever thought of one. Its not dublin. No, dont be fooled. That is. Were just playing a little game with you. Guess which city were in all right. Meteorologist kari hall, of course. Been monitoring what we can expect all across the bay area, so certainly its a cooler start there in San Francisco. Absolutely. Yes. Its cooler and low visibility in spots and the temperature is at 50 degrees. Were in the upper 40s low 50s for the north bay as you head out. And its in the low 50s in dublin. While we are seeing those temperatures in the mid 60s or mid 50s for the south bay. Now we will start out in concord with a lot of sunshine, clear skies at 1 00. Were in the low 70s and in the upper 70 going throughout the day. Its still going to be nice and back to the same weather we had yesterday, where brentwood hit a high of 80 degrees 79, in san jose and will be in the mid 70s for petaluma. Lets head over to mike with a look at where we can find some lower gas prices. Yeah, well we havent even lower than they were in the east bay livermore foxy gasoline in fremont is i mean sorry, in livermore on old first street is even lower than fliers in fremont. Thats still 4. 34. But in livermore, we do have foxy gasoline at 430. Thats great. Best in san jose is 475 at quick serve on alum rock avenue and Solano County has a lot. Has a low of 479 in fairfield. Bond fair on walters road. Thank you all for sharing those prices. We get and give over here at gasbuddy. Com on the roadways. We have a smooth drive for the most part. The bay bridge though is changing the pattern. Notice over on the oakland side, its slower than the approach to San Francisco. I think they may have cleared that crash from the fifth street exit there, and that might improve the flow of traffic getting into the city. The rest of the east bay shows a pretty standard pattern. Back to you. Thanks, mike. 611 right now, red lobster settling, shutting down dozens of restaurants. Next on today in the bay. The bay area locations impacted, and what may have caused the closures. Well, new at 6 00, bay area red lobster fans among those feeling the pinch as the Company Abruptly announces a new round of restaurant closures. In all, at least 48 restaurants across the u. S. Suddenly closed yesterday two in the bay area located in fremont and rohnert park, comes as the chain struggles to avoid bankruptcy. There are still six red lobster locations operating in the bay area, including san jose, milpitas, vallejo, san bruno, fairfield and pittsburg. So if you have those gift cards, you better use them for your cheddar biscuits. Well, lets talk about some food i love. Yeah trending for you this morning. A peninsula barbecue joint cracking yelps top 100 across the country cappellos barbecue and redwood city ranking 33rd. And see if this doesnt make your mouth water here. So that menu includes that beef brisket smoked up to 18 hours before it served. Look at the size of that smoker. Hey, look, you know whats good. All right. Other Fan Favorites include the ribs, the smoked chicken, and the louisiana hot links. The restaurant started as a food truck back in 2010. Yelps top spot, by the way, goes to wrights barbecue and johnson, arkansas. I dont even know where that is. But interesting. Well, you just stick it here in the bay area. All right, well, tonight marks ten years of tonight show with jimmy fallon. I remember when he started, and with a whole decade of shows under jimmys belt, there are a bevy of memorable moments. This. Alabama to new youngs on a tree stump. Just some of the highlights the iconic late night talk show has seen over the past ten years. Tonight, nbc is celebrating the milestone with a two hour special. But as fallon says, deciding what to include can be a challenge. Weve been through so much with this show that its actually bizarre to watch all the stuff put together in one special. Were just sitting there going like, do we have to lose that . Or we gotta, we gotta include that, you know, thats neil young. You can watch the full two hour tonight show 10th Anniversary Special beginning at 9 00 on nbc bay area. Then stay tuned for nbc bay area news at 11 00. He came to the studio here. Do you remember that . I do really, really great guy, down to earth, fun. Hey hey hey hey. Wow. There you go. Hey. Okay. I like that song. You know, all the words. That was great. You know, i do my part. Research, research, research. Oh, my. Dont make me laugh. When i laugh, i cough. All right, well, were going to have beautiful weather, sunshine as we go throughout today. Although were starting out with a lot of clouds across the bay area, were not seeing that in walnut creek. It is still a clear start for you this morning. And its also very mild with our High Temperatures. Back to what we saw yesterday. Were in the upper 70s and low 80s, which is just a little bit above normal, up to 80. In gilroy, 81 in los gatos and milpitas today, 77 degrees. Well see some upper 70s for fremont as well as walnut creek and 81 in antioch. The 7day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. Were going to see some cooler coastal temperatures in the low 60s, but when you head over to redwood city, were up to 73 degrees, and looking at some mid 60s for San Francisco downtown and low 60s for the outer sunset, i do think the fog is going to continue along the coastline. So even in the north bay were in the upper 50s for highs. But as you make your way into sonoma and napa counties, into the valleys, were going to see some mid to upper 70s. And a look at our 7day forecast does show some slight warming over the next few days. Nothing really significant here with some mid 80s on thursday. And then well bring it back to the upper 70s. We do have a beautiful weekend ahead. We can make some plans to get outside and temperatures ranging from mid 60s near the coast to some upper 70s for the inland areas. Mike, youre checking the flow across the bay bridge because of that issue. The crash over on the San Francisco side. Now, things do appear to be moving a little better for the backup at the bay bridge. The hov lanes are clear. That means its really just a matter of those metering lights having their effect over here. As we look over towards San Francisco, we see smoother drive and better sensor reads all the way across the span. So i think that crash has cleared from fifth, and now we have just your regular morning commute patterns as they kick in around the bay. Back to you. Thanks so much, mike. Well, diving deep ahead for you here on today in the bay. The way underwater robots are helping us learn more about the Climate Change and transforming our oceans. Charging cables cut the disturbing trend targeting ev charging stations, leaving drivers feeling powerless. And the heated race for San Francisco mayor. New numbers showing one clear cut leader. This is today in the bay good Tuesday Morning to you. Thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia and im marcus washington. Want to get you caught up on that forecast for you today. Depending on where you live, kerrys got you covered. Meteorologist kari hall is tracking that for us. And a lot going on. Nice and clear though in most of these. Yeah. For most of these scenes. And were starting out with temperatures in the low to mid 50s even some upper 50s for the south bay. But after our cool start this morning we are going to see those temperatures anywhere from low 60s near the coast to upper 60s for the peninsula and across the bay to oakland 69 there. While in concord, were going to see a high of 79, also 79, in san jose and our temperatures go up a degree or two each of the next few days. And we continue on a warming trend through thursday, but nothing major here, no big changes. Ill be tracking that. Well talk about the weekend coming up. But now, mike, you have a new crash in the south bay. Do carry. I think it cleared very quickly, but at the top of the screen, westbound 237 off of 280 and just past that first street exit reports of an earlier crash. I believe all the activity again on the shoulder, if its there at all anymore, down below it we have your typical build north 101 happens right about now. Well see it really get focused around oakland road in the next ten minutes. Southbound out of oakland. This is a different oakland. Were talking about the city south 880 toward a street. A new crash may block one lane. It just happened. So theres slowing and the build off the Castro Valley y, which is moving well. And the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. Now, theres a slower drive approaching the richmond toll plaza, heading over towards san rafael. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Today well find out if hundreds of thousands of people in the south bay will have to pay more for their water today. And the base kris sanchez joining us live from san jose this morning, breaking down those numbers. So, chris, how much are we talking about here . Extra well, i mean, its going to be a bit more for folks in one part of town versus folks in another part of town. But valley water says that they need this money in order to do a seismic retrofit of the valley water districts biggest reservoir. Youve probably seen it Anderson Reservoir and morgan hill. You pass by it and its never full because it cant be. Now heres what that rate increase would cost you 12. 9 for residents in the northern part of Santa Clara County could add about 9 a month to your bill. Those who live in the south county could see increases anywhere from a dollar to just more than 3 a month. Now, valley waters biggest project is that seismic retrofit of the anderson dam in morgan hill, a project that has ballooned in costs to 2. 3 billion. Labor and materials all those costs have skyrocketed in recent years, so of course we have to pay for those and we see those increases. But the reality is our board has to balance the idea of, hey, you know, what are the charges for water here in Santa Clara County, but also preparing for the future. We cant let these Infrastructure Projects be delayed anymore. The longer we wait, the more they end up costing and it ends up costing us more down the road. So really, this is the most Cost Effective way to get these projects done is to get them done. Now now that fix isnt just on valley waters list of to dos. The federal government actually mandated that they fix the Anderson Reservoir. It was built in 1950, and it has to be retrofitted because there were studies that found that the structure could fail in a major earthquake and cause widespread flooding and destruction. All across Santa Clara County, the valley water board will vote on this issue later this afternoon. Well keep following it for you in san jose. Kris sanchez. Today in the bay. All right. Thanks for the latest, chris. Well, also happening today. Pro palestine. Palestine activists planned to protest outside of google i o Developers Conference today. This is at shoreline amphitheater in Mountain View. That event spotlights the companys most anticipated projects. Now you may remember, google recently fired dozens of workers who protested inside google offices. That conference starts at 9 00 this morning. Well, bay area thieves are targeting tesla and ev charging stations to steal the copper metal inside those cables. Over the weekend, someone cut cables from nine of those charging stations in vallejo, causing thousands of dollars in damage inside those cables. Its a dense layer of copper, which those thieves can sell for around 3 a pound, depending on how many of those cables they actually still, they can make a couple of hundred dollars ev car users say that that trend, theyre seeing more and more, and its an indication of this is the tough times were seeing across the bay area. We actually spoke with one of those ev drivers. I think it reinforces the desperate times that a lot of people are under. And, you know, hopefully we can do something about it. More ev drivers say that they are charging their cars at home, but some thieves are also targeting those Home Charging cables. And the cost is nearly 3,000 to replace. It is 635 right now. San francisco supervisors today hold a second reading on their recently approved ordinance to ban socalled forever chemicals in firefighting gear as our Investigative Unit reports, studies have shown the gear firefighter wear is made with materials called pfas proven to raise cancer risk. Theyre called forever chemicals because they dont easily break down once the skin absorbs it. Supervisors approved the new ban last week, and it is the first of its kind in the United States. San francisco firefighters are already testing alternative pfoa free fabrics they believe are just as effective. You can view the entire story under the Investigative Unit section. Youll find it right there on our home page. Well now to decision 2024. And a new poll places london breed at the top of a crowded race for San Francisco mayor. The group grow sf conducted a ranked choice poll. Breed gets a little more than half the support of voters. Former supervisor and fill in mayor mark farrell follows slightly behind danielle. Lowery ranks third, followed by board president aaron peskin and supervisor asha safai. Same poll finds more than 6 in 10 voters view mayor breed as at least somewhat unfavorable. Well, the as opponent, as stadium opponents in vegas are striking out. This is in their legal battle to allow voters to decide a critical funding question. Nevada Supreme Court has struck down the push to add that measure to the fall ballot. The group, schools over stadiums, wants voters to decide if nearly 400 million should be set aside for the new stadium on the vegas strip. Now, teachers opposed using public money for that project and called the state lawmakers efforts unconstitutional. But judges call the language of that petition deficit and conclude and conclude confusing that despite the latest setback, opponents plan to try to add a similar measure to the 2026 ballot. Lets take a live look outside. From walnut creek in the east bay this morning. Suns coming up over the bay area. Kerrys got a look at our forecast. Yeah, its all clear there in walnut creek. But then as we head into San Francisco, low clouds and mist and drizzle to get our tuesday started. As we go throughout the day, its going to clear out just a little bit here, but the fog will linger near the coastline and our temperatures will be in the upper 50s and low 60s for the afternoon. Around the bay were going to see still some warm valley temperatures. Brentwood up to 80 degrees for today, which is just slightly above normal. Well be in the upper 70s for san jose and petaluma. After a cloudy start, well see the High Temperature up to about 76 degrees. We are going to continue with temperatures like this over the next few days, and were looking pretty good here as we get closer to the weekend. No major changes over the next few days, and looking pretty nice. So well be tracking that and also talking about whats ahead in our weekend weather. And weve also been getting a look around the bay area tracking our few incidents that we have on the roads. Mike, what do you have going on . You know, carrie, were looking at the bay bridge. I was just watching the flow here very carefully because we had the issue over in the San Francisco area. Im stepping in now westbound right here. Were looking at the easy drive now. Much better spacing than we saw over the last 40 minutes there in San Francisco at the fifth exit there off of westbound 80. Thats the bay bridge. Things were really jammed up and then it rippled back. Now looks pretty good actually, as the build happens over in richmond. No surprise. More traffic flow. You saw those low clouds, visibility seems okay. Heads up. Youre going to see more crowds getting around oracle park tonight as well. Just like last night. 645 game. That means more traffic on the 280 extension and the bridge back and forth from the parking lot. Perhaps more folks taking the ferry in toward the game. That would be a great way. I want to take the ferry to the game one of these days. A smooth drive anywhere south of there. Slowing now for the san mateo bridge. Back to you. Lets do it. Plan that trip right now. Thats still 639 right now. We are following some breaking news just coming into our newsroom. The bay areas wnba team is announced. Were going to show you the new logo and tell you how you can celebrate this weekend with e40, President Biden out with new tariffs, and former President Trump has a very special guest at his trial today out to the big board this morning. Speaker of the house mike johnson says hell attend Donald Trumps hush money trial today. Trump of course, accused of covering up hush money payments to an adult film actress. Yesterday, trumps former lawyer Michael Cohen, testified against him crossexamination expected today. Highly unusual for a sitting speaker of the house to attend a criminal trial right in front of the jury. In their view , then again, it is highly unusual. It never happened before that a former president has been accused of crimes. Yesterday, senators j. Jd vance right there, and tommy tuberville, both possible picks for Vice President , watched cohen testify. Michael cohen is the prosecutions star witness. Does any reasonable, sensible person believe anything that Michael Cohen says . Okay so thats true. Prosecutors played a recording cohen made of a conversation with his boss, donald trump, about making a payoff to the National Enquirer. Now, why would cohen do that . He was on trumps side at the time, cohen says its because the head of the National Enquirer didnt believe trump would actually pay, and he wanted proof that he would. After all, laura, donald trump does have that reputation. Interesting. Thanks for the latest there, scott. It comes as medical experts find new links between head and the heart. A recent report by the American Heart Association found that social isolation and loneliness can lead to heart inflammation and heart disease. One cardiologist with El Camino Health says in general, loneliness can trigger the brains symptomatic, symptomatic nerve system, controlling our fight or flight response and the sympathetic system leads to higher blood pressure. It leads to higher cholesterol, at least a higher blood sugar. All these factors, which we know are directly related to the development of heart disease. So simply, its not just being lonely, but its all the mental aspects of being lonely. So yeah, may not affect everybody, but theres a much higher likelihood of a lonely individual, of an isolated individual to feel those those mental stimulants which then lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. He also says that we all want to manage our blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels. To do that, he recommends exercise a balanced diet, no smoking and limit the alcohol or just cut it all out altogether. So lets get started this morning if you want to get out there, practice, shoot some hoops. Its nice and cool. Were starting out cloudy across much of the bay area, some low visibility in a few spots, and as we take a look at walnut creek, well, here we have a clear view. It is starting out mainly clear this morning in walnut creek as well as pleasant hill. Were seeing temperatures in the low 50s to start as we go throughout the day, though, its going to be clearing out and gradually warming up. Well be in the low 70s here at 1 00 today, and in the upper 70s in parts of the east bay, as well as the north bay. A lot of these numbers are back to what we had yesterday in the upper 70s for the south bay, and also just a degree or two warmer for tomorrow as we reach the peak of the warmth, as our temperatures come up to the low to mid 80s, were really not seeing anything too major happening here. No big shifts in our temperatures. Were looking at some coastal temperatures in the 60s, our valley temperatures in the 70s and 80s. And each morning i think well start out with some low clouds and fog, which will be very slow to clear from the coastline. It shows that as we go into the next few mornings, there may be some coastal drizzle, some low visibility and spots, and some of that may also fill into some of our valleys with some low visibility and some fog and some spots looking at our overall view, at our weather pattern and what may shake things up for us, theres not a lot. There will be a low developing farther to the south as we go toward the end of the weekend, but overall, the dry weather continues. The jet stream, those upper level winds stay well to the north of us, and a slight cool down in our temperatures. In spots like morgan hill, well see some upper 70s for the next couple of days, but then as we approach the weekend, it will come down a few degrees. And the coolest of those days will be next monday. And then we go back up to the mid 70s. But you can see that its just a few degrees that were talking about here. So for the inland areas, were going from 80 today to mid 80s on thursday and then upper 70s for the weekend. And San Franciscos keeping it steady here with some 60s throughout the forecast. Youre slowing in typical spots, including the south bay where the build happens, as well as right here, the san mateo bridge, again, just getting more congestion. But we dont have any issues. So theres no sudden slowing. Its just gradually slowing as the commute builds for these lanes. Heading over to the peninsula. Back to you. All right. Thank you very much, mike.
