Right now at 11. Breaking news out of san jose. A chaotic night at a buddhist temple in the alum rock neighborhood after a fire broke out this evening. Crews still monitoring for hotspots right now. The temple is located on foss avenue near 680 and alum rock. A neighbor shared this video with us. You can see the flames right there shooting up into the sky. Investigators tell us there were four people inside at the time. Everybody got out. Okay. The vast majority of this building is a large meeting area. Fortunately, there was no meetings at the time. The only people who were in the building were the four people who live in the building. They live in a in a small unit thats towards the rear of the building, above a garage space. Crews managed to keep that fire from spreading to nearby homes, the cause of that fire under investigation. But a man who says he owns the building told us he thinks that fire started in the kitchen. Now, also tonight, trapped in gaza, a bay area doctor among a group of doctors trying to get home. Yes she left on a medical mission two weeks ago and was supposed to be on her way back. But after israel closed the rafah crossing, communication with her has been limited. Nbc bay areas Jocelyn Moran joins us now with the details. What do we know . Jocelyn . Well, jessica, after israel seized the rafah crossing, the brother of a san carlos doctor says they lost complete communication with her. Then this morning they received a text from her. She is okay, but communication is extremely limited and they worry when she may be able to come back home. Akhmad sheikholeslami tells us his sister always wanted to help others, so when she got the opportunity to go to gaza, she took it. I felt she really felt compelled when she saw, you know, the suffering of the children and the people of palestine to do something more. Doctor holly sheikholeslami is a doctor at Sutter Health in san carlos. Ahmad tells us she left at the end of april to gaza on a two week medical mission. The first week she would send him a message every day so wed get a text, you know, in terms of, you know, everythings okay. And, you know, you know, im starting to do my work and ive seen children and so on and so forth, and so that kind of reassured us that, you know, shes okay. But then last week, after israel seized the rafah crossing, that changed. There was a lot of internet blackouts. And we for a couple of days did not hear from her when we kind of lost contact. It was like, thats not a good sign. And, you know, hearing the news with the increasing bombings and incursions and, you know, death toll, you know, we started to become really worried. Nbc news reported on friday that dozens of american medical volunteers were trapped inside gaza after Israeli Forces took over the rafah crossing, preventing people from getting out. This morning, there was some relief for ahmed and their family, he says. He heard from his sister. He got one message saying she was okay, but said they were waiting for the border to open. She urged people to reach out to their local representatives. With the work shes done in gaza , ahmed says hes proud of her but also worries for her safety. And we have to, you know, end, end this, this war. And we have to ensure that the people who are sacrificing to try to help others are also safe in this process. Jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. Well as that war rages on overseas tonight, a new propalestinian encampment has emerged, this one at san jose state. Students are demanding the university divest funds from israel, condemn israel for what they call genocide in gaza. Well tonight, san jose state says it has been planning for the possibility of increased student activism, and safety is its top priority, a statement from the University Goes on to say San Jose State University respects free expression, while also ensuring the continuity of student education and instruction and other vital operations. Well, new at 11 tonight. Its a disturbing trend. Thieves targeting high powered teslas and other ev charging stations and stealing heavy cable for the copper metal inside. Nbc bay areas tom jensen is in vallejo tonight, where someone cut cables from nine charging stations, leaving tesla drivers in a bind and causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage and repair costs. Its easy to see what the thieves are after these cables are heavy and you can see by the cut ends. They are also dense with copper, and at 3 a pound through scrappers from the cables cut here, the thieves likely got a couple hundred dollars for all of that metal. They knew something wasnt right. Most likely happened in the night, and we found it early morning. Josh beckler and his wife were two of the first people to find the cut cables early mothers day morning. Josh is also a retired marine and former investigator for a major big box hardware chain who routinely investigated similar thefts where thieves targeted generators and other items for the copper wire. You know, they left five charging stations, im pretty sure after they racked up, i dont know what the quantity was, but almost 20, cables with the nozzles, those are extremely heavy, so im imagining thats all that they could haul at one given time. In all nine of the tesla supercharging stations cables behind the vallejo target store were cut over the weekend and reported to vallejo pd early sunday morning, leaving tesla drivers in a bind. I think its the second time or third hes been cut, so they need to put some gates up or Something Like that. I dont know what they need to do, but this is pretty inconvenient. Josh beckler says sadly, its a sign of just how desperate many in the bay area are right now willing to risk life and freedom for a couple hundred bucks in copper wire and in oakland. Tesla driver who had to use the chargers in a pinch today agrees. I think it reinforces the desperate times that a lot of people are under. And, you know, hopefully we can do something about it. Tesla Energy Workers had all of the stations back up and running by dinnertime. But this isnt an isolated incident. There have been reports of ev cables stolen from charging stations across the u. S. Recently. That last driver i talked to from oakland said she usually charges her car at home. But beware, the thieves are also targeting those home ev charging cables for just a couple of dollars worth of copper, and the cables themselves can cost almost 3,000 each to replace in vallejo. So we got some drizzle to contend with for tomorrow mornings commute. But over the next couple of days, a little bit of a warming trend. But if youre also have any sierra travel plans, watch out for some big time thunderstorms and that microclimate forecast. Lets take you around the bay area right now and well show you this. Temperatures around san jose. Were at 58 degrees, partly cloudy skies. Eventually well see the low clouds settle into the santa clara valley. Right now in walnut creek, 55 degrees in our east bay valleys too, will likely see the low clouds just like we had this morning. And theres plenty of low clouds. Pretty view too, right there. Sfo, Alaska Airlines going by right there right now 53 degrees currently back into downtown San Francisco. Theres a lot of low clouds and actually some mist and drizzle coming down with some of that. So some wet roadways possible for your morning commute, especially around San Francisco and the peninsula to start. Then as we move forward, notice how we start the day off. Lots of low clouds inland. And then during the day, kind of like a summerlike pattern. The low clouds will stay off there to the west of San Francisco. But also notice those high clouds coming in from the east. That will be the remnants of another day of some strong thunderstorms around lake tahoe south. If you have plans around yosemite or lake tahoe next couple of afternoons, those daytime chances of thunderstorms will continue and some of the high clouds from that may try to drift to the west. Doesnt look like were going to see any showers, but well keep a close eye on the radar around this time tomorrow night. So right now, as we head towards tomorrow morning, weve got low 50s to start, areas of low clouds, a little bit of spotty drizzle in a few areas, including the coast in San Francisco, lunchtime temperatures climbing through the 60s and 70. So temperature wise at least for one more day a bit on the mild side, 70 around san jose, low 60s again near San Francisco, mid 60s in oakland. Then as we head towards wednesday and thursday we start to see a warm up. Notice those areas in orange showing up, including san jose near 81 degrees on wednesday, mid 80s inland San Francisco and oakland. Warming up a little bit, upper 60s to low 70s. Thursday looks to be the warmest day of the week, with some mid 80s possible around the east bay valleys. And then were going to cool down again as we get towards friday. As High Pressure gives up a little bit of ground, its a low pressure offshore for the weekend that will bring in the low clouds a little bit more and likely lead to some cooling changes, just like we saw this last weekend. So well start things off with the midweek warmup. San francisco briefly close to 70 degrees valleys back into the 80s. Looks like wednesday and thursday, the warmest days of the week, and then comfortably cool with some low clouds as we move forward into next weekend. All right. Sounds good. Legal action against the state for a deadly covid outbreak at san quentin prison during the pandemic, families of those who died at san quentin, as well as inmates and staff who were infected but survived, have filed four lawsuits against the state. Thats the word tonight from the nevada water outlook report, which came out earlier this month. Its projected the lake will be full for the first time in five years. Thats because of two particularly wet winters and all that snowmelt that comes with it. When the lake is full, it means it can provide enough water for the next three years. Although it is good news if youre heading to tahoe this summer, you might have a hard time finding somewhere to sit on the beach. A full lake means higher water levels and less beach areas.
