While shes resting, her voice this morning at 6 00 right on the nose. And were going to check in with laura a little bit later. First, lets get the weather. Good morning. Carrie. Good morning. Its a beautiful start. We are seeing our morning sunrise is happening earlier. Those sunsets a little bit later. And now were transitioning from a springfield to the air to more like summer. Its going to start to heat up today. And those winds will also pick up some of those gusts. Today, 45mph. And of course, when temperatures heat up, we head to the coastline. But were going to see temperatures inland up to near 90 degrees for tomorrow. And the coast, as well as some of the bays in the 80s. So were also going to continue into the weekend with hot temperatures. But today in Mountain View, were going from 56 this morning to upper 70s for this afternoon. And mike, you are concerned about a crash in san jose . I am curious, a major surface tree. This is actually state route 130 alum rock avenue. Theres a crash at harriet which is just off of white road. This is a major intersection and its near james lick high school. A pedestrian reportedly hit, so were following that in the newsroom. I havent heard about a closure, but alum rock does show slowing coming toward white road as folks travel toward the freeway as well. Now we have the freeway 101. That first slowing. We talk about. Its starting to ease up already, but that second burst will kick in about 640. Thats the typical schedule for the south bay. Nothing unusual showing up right now. As far as the flow of traffic. Of course, the backup forms and builds at the bay bridge toll plaza. Back to you, mike. Thanks. Also on the roads new this morning, one person is dead after a car crash in the south bay. Heres what we know. Chp says around 830 last night, a driver was speeding on 101 north, exited at the trimble road offramp too fast and flipped their car. The driver died at the scene. The 101 on and off ramps were closed, but they are now back open. Happening today a landmark case in Contra Costa County is set to play out as four men on trial for murder will now be spending a lot less time in prison than expected. Its the result of the racist text messaging scandal plaguing the Antioch Police department and tainting the legal cases of the officers involved in it. Today, in the bays tom jensen is live in martinez with more details. And what some are saying is the first major test of the states Racial Justice act. Tom good. Good morning chris. Thats right. All four men originally did face those murder charges. And now, these were this was four, of course, that 20, 21 drive by shooting where one person was killed and another person was injured, they have all now entered plea deals, pleading no contest to manslaughter. Instead of those murder charges. That deal came after the Court Learned the Antioch Police officers involved in this case, texted messages, dozens of them about the suspect that were racist. The judge ruled the officers violated the Racial Justice act. And today, two of those men will be sentenced, the other two on friday, the suspects, who had originally faced the possibility of life in prison, will now serve sentences ranging from less than 14 years up to 20 years in prison. First and foremost was ensuring public safety, to make sure there was accountability. And those responsible for this violent act are behind bars for a lengthy periods of time. Prosecutors agree with legal analysts who say this is the first time californias Racial Justice act has been tested. In a major case, the mother of the victim has already expressed her anger over this. Latest developments, the change in those, to those with those plea deals lowering the charges and the sentences for the suspects in this case. And the das office says there will likely be more cases that have been tainted and will be affected by these racist Text Messages involving these. Antioch police officers. Were live in martinez. What else is the president saying . Good morning. So during that holocaust remembrance ceremony yesterday, president biden, he connected the horrors of the holocaust to hamass attack on israel, the indifference of the world. President biden denouncing the nationwide surge of antisemitic incidents since hamas attacked israel on october seventh. There is no place on any campus in america, any place in america, for antisemitism or hate speech or threats of violence of any kind. His remarks came during a ceremony honoring the 6 million jews killed during the holocaust, and as campus protests against the israelhamas war continue, republicans criticized the president for not speaking out sooner. Instead of protecting jewish students, joe biden has pandered to the prohamas wing of the Democrat Party overseas. Israeli military forces seized control of the gaza side of the rafah Border Crossing with egypt as part of what officials call a very limited ground operation. It wasnt an operation in these civilian areas that they had ordered to be evacuated, so, we will continue to make clear that we oppose a Major Military operation in rafah. Make that clear then, privately, as well as publicly, negotiations continue today as israel and hamas try to bridge the gaps between their proposals. The u. S. Is pushing for more aid to gaza and a ceasefire. We continue to believe that there is space to reach a deal, and we are trying, incredibly hard to push one over the line. President biden says hell continue to push for peace at home and abroad, and for those held hostage by hamas to come home, just as we have freed hostages already and will not rest until we bring them all home. Cia director William Burns will be in israel today for the latest round of negotiations. Us and hamas Officials Say there will be no deal if israel continues aggression on gaza. Back to you. We are seeing temperatures nice and cool this morning. It is a beautiful start to our day and probably the most comfortable for a bike ride to school. Coming home from school its going to be heating up, but right now were at 54 degrees. At 9 00. We are going to see temperatures in the low 60s, and at lunchtime it will be in the mid 70s. As we go through the day, were headed for the low 80s. So this is a big bump in our temperatures compared to what we saw over the past few days. Remember the weekend when it was in the mid 50s and raining . Yeah, thats going to be a distant memory. As our temperatures continue to heat up, it will feel more like summer. Look at tomorrows High Temperatures with concord up to 88 degrees. Also 88 in santa rosa. Even San Francisco will hit the 80s for the first time in months. We are going to see a big ramp up in our temperatures, so well continue to follow that. Mikes been trying to find some lower gas prices. Yeah, but im watching kimura over there. Hes all happy about High Temperatures. Im not me so much these kid. Im not. Im. Im a 441 guy here. Thats livermore, an entry from livermore in the states ten best list. Thats great. 441 at fox. This is a couple minutes less than it took about this time yesterday. So thats a good flow of traffic out of Contra Costa County and down to 580 and Alameda County as we get a live look out there, the Golden Gate Bridge light traffic flow, clear skies as we talked about in san jose as well, but clear roadways as well. Just building in san rafael. Back to you. Beautiful shot there, all right. You like it hot. We like it cool. You know . Whatever. Something for everybody. Balance it out. The teslas autopilot system once again under the microscope ahead on today in the bay. What federal investigators are asking of ceo elon musk and his engineers. And were going to take a live look again at one of our bridges. And this is the bay bridge toll plaza. Look at all those drivers. Some might even say theyre the worst drivers in america, not some of those drivers. Others are saying that i know were going to let you know about the bay area cities ranking among the worst of the worst or shame. All right. San jose sharks promised the south Bay Community ice rink. When we return, well give you your first glimpse at sharks ice in gilroy. Gilroy and what its going to look like. Keep it its getting some momentum from a fall in yields and treasury bonds. But that was offset when disney shares slid 10. The entertainment giant reported disappointing earnings in focus today. More Earnings Results from the likes of affirm, uber, airbnb, tripadvisor and robinhood. Investigators are Digging Deeper into teslas autopilot feature. Federal investigators published a letter to the company they are asking tesla for data on how its trying to make its autopilot safer. The tech is linked to nearly 470 crashes and 14 deaths. The Company Recalled 2 million vehicles back in december to issue an Online Software update. Well, heres the thing. Now the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to know how tesla developed that Software Update and how the companys engineers tested it to make sure it would actually work. The letter reveals there have been 20 new crashes since that recall. Well if you lost money in the ftx collapse, you can now get in line to recover what you lost with interest. Under a new plan filed by the companys bankruptcy lawyers, nearly all of ftxs creditors and regular investors would get Cash Payments equal to 118 of the assets they stored on the exchange. That would come from assets that the lawyers pooled together. Since ftx imploded in 2022, it still will take months for the payouts to start a movie. Theaters are still seeing less foot traffic. A post pandemic. Data from Analytics Firm placer. Ai shows visits to amc were down 65 in april versus 2019 and 50 year over year. This decline is similar at cinemark and regal cinemas. Some of the drop can be attributed to theater chains closing some locations and people still watching movies at home. Okay, so they say california leads the way. And this is not one of those good ones. New at six. The bay area takes two of the top three spots on a new list of the worst cities to drive in. Who says this . Forbes forbes evaluated driving conditions across 47 densely populated cities. It looked at four categories driving experience, safety, cost of car ownership, and access to maintenance services. Oakland ranked number one because of the number of fatal car accidents, steep gas prices, and lengthy average commute times. Next up miami, florida and rounding out the top three San Francisco. Wow. I feel lucky that im driving in the south bay mostly. Yeah, right. Lets keep it that way. Also, new at six. Things are looking up for the san jose sharks. Not only did they win the number one pick in the nhl draft, but the team is showing off plans for a brand new south bay ice skating complex. And we can show it to you. Yeah. This is exciting for the community. These are brand new renderings of the planned sharks ice facility at the gilroy sports park. It will feature two nhl sized ice rinks, a cafe, a Fitness Center and a shark store on the first floor. Fans can also watch hockey games at a bar and restaurant there on the second floor. And right now, the plans call for a grand opening by the end of 2026. South bay represent for gilroy. I mean hockey is big, hockey is big. Can you imagine how much it must be costing to keep ice cool in gilroy right now . Yeah, especially in gilroy in the next couple of days. Its going to be very expensive. Not only that, but just trying to stay cool for ourselves. Running the air conditioning. Yeah, were going to have some heat ramping up and its going to stick around for a while as we are taking a look at some of our current temperatures that are now at 50 in San Francisco, nice, cool, refreshing start to our day, but its already getting a little bit warmer for parts of the north bay from vacaville to napa, mainly because the wind is being kicking up here and the wind keeps those temperatures up. When the wind calms down, temperatures are allowed to cool off quite a bit overnight. So we are under a wind advisory for these areas shaded in brown. That continues until tomorrow morning. And were looking at a steady northerly wind at 15 to 25mph. But some of those gusts may reach 45mph. Thats enough to bring down some tree branches and possibly cause some impacts to power. Take a look at the 7day forecast thats coming up at the bottom of the screen. Were going to go hour by hour with our wind gusts forecast. Were looking at a northerly wind coming in to the north bay 2530 five Miles Per Hour. And here we are at five, six, 7 00. Its 8 00 tonight. Its still pretty windy. So thats the reason why that wind advisory continues until tomorrow morning. Even along the coastline. And some of our valleys are going to have a pretty high wind gusts starting to pick up today. As youre going out for that run this morning and enjoying the morning in foster city, it is a cool 53 degrees in the next hour. And this is sunshine continues. Our temperatures really start to ramp up. Were headed for the mid to upper 70s here. 80 in Mountain View as well as 80 in hayward and 81 in san jose. Tomorrows when we really start to feel that heat with dublin looking at a high of 85 degrees about the same in oakland, as well as much of the north bay santa rosa, a high of 88 degrees, and there will be a few spots hitting 90 on friday. Thats concord and fairfield. Some of our well inland spots will have some hot temperatures and walnut creek. The warmth still continues into the weekend. On mothers day, were going to cool it off a little bit for mom and then still see those upper 70s for early next week. If you are planning to get outside. The weather is looking nice and sunny. Probably heading out for brunch will be your best bet before those temperatures heat up and will be in the low 80s for early next week for highs inland, while San Francisco will see temperatures in the mid 70s. Today well get very close to 80 degrees. If not see some low 80s in the city for tomorrow afternoon. Mike, youre still concerned about that crash in san jose . I am carrie. I mean, the freeways, the major freeways are just fine. One on one. Just starting to show another build another 15 minutes or so. Well see more slowing, but its here. Alum rock avenue, which is actually state route 130. And thats why im getting these reports from chp. They have now categorized this crash involving a pedestrian as a felony hit and run. So they are here on alum rock avenue just shy of white road. You see that major intersection right here on the speed sensors. Its slowing there. This is not far from james lick high school. Its an adult reportedly involved in this crash. Its not a student, from what i understand. And it was too early for the school kids to be heading through the area. But that note will show some congestion through the area. And of course, were watching for the updates in the investigation through that area. Meanwhile, highway 37, highway four, these are typical slowing the bill for Contra Costa County. There is a burst water main over on carlson, so watch that. If youre taking city streets through richmond, the build toward the bridge there and of course the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza continues. Thats not going to let up. Back to you. Thank you mike. All right. Highlighting issues in the foster care system a head on today in the bay. Well hear from one bay area author on his experience and the steps hes now taking to empower youth going tough thehr to raise awareness of issues surrounding foster care, genome. Medeiros, of livermore, was recently signing copies of his new autobiography, broken boy. He wrote the book to let people know about the childhood trauma he suffered in the foster care system between the ages of five and 17. Medeiros cycled through 25 different homes and facilities until he met judy welsh, who became his forever mom. Welsh adopted him, and when he turned 50, she passed away. Medeiros, who now lives in the north bay, has started a fund in her honor to help young adults just out of foster care. Medeiros asks applicants to write a letter of 500 words or more. Tell me how you got into this situation and tell me how you want to get out of the situation and more importantly, tell me how youre not going to get in a situation again, because that one question is something that we all take for granted, that our parents teach us how to not continue to repeat the same mistake twice. Well, when youre just struggling to survive through your own childhood, you dont have time for those lessons. And if theyre even mentioned, which is rare, you dont even listen. So the idea behind my moms fund is to help ask those tough questions of these kids. If youd like to contribute to the judy welsh fund and know someone who should apply, you can find the information on the valley of the moon Childrens Foundation website. It is 627 now and ahead at 630. A possible setback for Scott Petersons legal team. They want new dna tests, but prosecutors are calling this a deadnd. E norman, bad news. Our Investigative Unit showed you some outrageous behavior by an east bay school worker, and now we know the school board is talking about showing the superintendent the door. Plus his first order, of course, when he gets in, its always about bringing down crime rates. Thats oakland mayor shengtao talking with us just days before the citys new police chief starts his job. Our laura garcia goes one on one to find out how the mayor is pledging to move the city and its Small Businesses forward. This is today in the bay good wednesday morning. Im chris chmura and im kris sanchez. We are filling in for marcus who is off this morning, and laura, who is trying to recover from a nasty case of laryngitis. But shes going to join us in just a few moments with that interview with oakland mayor sheng tao. We also want to check in with meteorologist kari hall. Youre watching quite the warm up. Yes, a lot of big changes here as we go into the next couple of days. Today its going to be a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. And were going to also see those winds picking up at times gusting to 45mph tomorrow, with the inland highs headed for 90 degrees. I think a lot of people will make it a beach day if you can. The coast will be heating up to about 80 degrees and the heat continues in the valleys for the weekend, while the coast will catch a little bit of a break as youre heading to work in the north bay. Thats a live look at san rafael, where we are now in the low 50s, and we will see a quick ramp up in those highs headed for the upper 70s for today. And 79 will be the High Temperature in oakland and 80 in hayward, as well as 81 in san jose. Mike, youre tracking that crash and an investigation in san jose. This is a major roadway in san jose, folks. Alum rock avenue, state route 130. Its just shy of white road as youre heading towards 680. That is your commute direction, and were starting to see more surface street traffic passing by james lick high school. Now, this happened a while back. Its an adult that was involved, but its a felony hit and run as categorized by chp. So we are definitely tracking it here in the newsroom. And out in the field. We are looking at the rest of the field and the smooth drive. Just the typical build for 101 over in the trivalley. The east bay for six, 88, 80. And of course your bridges back to you. Thank you mike. New developments now for San Francisco unified. We know there is now a plan of action as Californias Department of education takes control of the School Districts spending today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is live in San Francisco and ginger, this is really just the start of whats going to be months of moving forward. Thats true. Chris, just the beginning here. But at least there is a plan moving forward for the district and how the board of education, the states board of education will hold their hand through that. Lets show you some video from last nights meeting when the Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team from the board of education audited sf, usd, they presented their interim reports. They presented their findings from that to the school board. No big surprises there still bad news for the School District, including downgrading the district from qualified certification to negative certification for one of those interim reports. Sf usd has also been assigned fiscal advisors with veto powers. When it comes to the districts spending. Now, the School District says it has eliminated a significant number of open positions. It is also now in the process of identifying which schools will be closed in order to save money, the district will need a hiring freeze as well. A corrective plan will be in place by the end of the month. The School District will have a series of meetings, then kris with sf, usd families as well as other Community Members to really get down to which schools might be closed by the time that the next School Year Comes around. That vote can happen as soon as december, and that is definitely a vote that a lot of families, whether youre in kindergarten or all the way up, you know, to Higher School or upper school, thats really something that theyre going to be watching out for because its such a huge change. It is such an emotional thing for families. When schools close and kids have to transition somewhere else. So well be watching. Thank you, ginger, at long last, the city of oakland is set to begin a new chapter, at least when it comes to leadership in its embattled Police Department. A new Permanent Police chief is waiting in the wings. Our regular today in the bay anchor laura garcia is in our newsroom, still healing from a nasty case of laryngitis. Laura oakland mayor shengtao says shes ready to move forward. Yeah, yeah, most definitely. She wants the best. Understandably for her city, new chief Floyd Mitchell officially takes the reins on saturday. Thats 15 months since the firing of Leronne Armstrong and oakland mayor shengtao says thats just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to oakland, turning the corner on all of its recent troubles. We sat down with her virtually to learn more about the future plans for the city, and why she believes things are really looking up. And to her, it all starts with lower crime rates. Overall, crime in the city of oakland is down by more than 30 compared to year to date. Last year. Specifically, we are seeing reductions in homicides by 17. Robberies are slightly up by 6. However, that number is starting to flatten out since midfebruary. Now she credits the crime drop to several things, but it certainly got a big boost when Governor Newsom greenlighted added assistance from the chp. Our ceasefire strategy and in our partnership with chp, it really involves multiple jurisdictions, right . Everybody has to be operating at a high level and functioning together in order for the strategy to work. And were seeing that it is paying off other priorities Going Forward include boosting efforts to clean up blight and illegal dumping, even a new Tree Planting push to bring the magic back to oakland and boost Small Businesses in the process. The people here in the city of oakland, we love our city and we know that we go through bad times and good times of what have you, but it is nothing compared to what we are seeing consistently, which is consistent negativity. When there are so many great things happening. We have hundreds of new Small Businesses opening up, and for generations now, our Small Businesses in the city of oakland is our backbone. And she really wants people to support those Small Businesses. And thats supporting the city. Now, the mayor tells us the incoming chief is already working with opds interim chief and other Department Leaders to try to get up to speed on the citys new Crime Fighting strategies, and still, the goal continues to be not just flattening those crime rates, but eliminating them altogether and bringing oakland to a brand new light. Guys, a lot of people want to see that. Thank you laura. A new overnight, the propalestine encampment at George Washington university in washington, dc is now empty. Police cleared the students out of their tents early this morning, and at least two officers pepper sprayed protesters while trying to clear the encampment. About a dozen protesters were arrested, and right now there is a small group of protesters outside the Police Department demanding that the people who were arrested be released. This also follows protests at uc berkeley and stanford campuses yesterday day, on the same day as israels new incursion in rafah. And it all comes as tensions are already on a knife edge in the middle east and theres hope fading on israel agreeing to a cease fire deal at cal sproul plaza, hundreds of people gathered to rally Palestinian Protesters at stanford. Meanwhile held what they called an all out for rafah rally and at both protests, activists maintained their call for divestment from israel. And today on capitol hill, House Republicans are holding a hearing looking into accusations of antisemitism in elementary and secondary schools. District leaders from berkeley, new york city and suburban washington, dc are expected to testify. The Panel Includes the Berkeley School superintendent. Republicans say the hearing will focus on students accused of making antisemitic comments and lesson plans, demeaning israel. Stanislaus county prosecutors are reportedly shooting down a request from las Innocence Project to conduct new dna tests to win a new trial for scott peterson. Petersons team is making the request as part of a series of hearings surrounding a possible new trial. At least they want one. Peterson is serving a life in prison sentence for murdering his wife, laci, and their unborn son more than 20 years ago. His attorneys hope to retest evidence, including a mattress found in a van with the modesto bee reports. Prosecutors responded last week claiming previous testing not only rules out laceys dna, but matches a male profile, not a female profile. The new response also calls the latest hearings a fishing expedition in search of a boat. Next hearing is scheduled for may 29th. Happening today in east bay. School board may vote on the fate of its embattled district superintendent. The controversy stems from a story Candace Nguyen from our Investigative Unit, first brought to light. It surrounds allegations that the antioch schools maintenance director, ken turnage, bullied and harassed people, including a claim that he moved one employees desk to a rooftop as punishment. See that there on your screen. Turnage is now on administrative leave in the wake of our report, and the allegations also include what some claim is a too cozy relationship with antioch schools superintendent stephanie anello. She has recused herself from any investigations into this matter. But again, the board president tells us tonight he plans to call for a vote to remove anello. Previously, neither anello nor turnage would respond to our requests for comment. To watch our previous Investigative Unit coverage, you can look for that in this special section of our home page. If youve been watching the weather this morning, kerry has been telling us its going to get really windy and up to 45 miles an hour in some places around here. Well, theres Severe Weather hitting around the country in the central part of the u. S. This time, michigan and ohio are cleaning up after severe storms swept through there. And its not just wind, its tornadoes there. Yeah, yeah, theyre dealing with tornadoes across the midwest. And the month of april was the second most active in history, 300 tornadoes across the country. And it just continues now into may. So yesterday was michigan that bear the brunt of those storms. And this is new video that we have coming in from portage, about 140 miles west of detroit. Thats where a tornado most likely took a direct hit at this mobile park home. And that community destroyed mobile homes. There multiple homes, and it displaced people who moved to shelters to stay the night. And now thousands remain without power this morning. And we also have video of a small town in michigan where a tornado ripped off the side of a big fedex facility there. At some point, it trapped 50 workers and now rescuers are racing to clear those power lines, and it blocked their safe exit. And in ohio, severe storms moved through that state over the last 24 hours. And this is video from greenville, about 33 miles northwest of dayton. The weather caused down power lines and trees and also fell onto homes, and there were reports of damage left behind by flooding and more than a thousand people. There remain without power in that area. This morning, in the Severe Weather just continues as we take a look at the satellite and the radar, we are watching a couple of systems moving through one up around the montana area and moving off towards the east, but we also have a severe thunderstorm watch for missouri. And then were also seeing storms breaking out around northern tennessee. And then all of the activity is pushing off towards the east. So michigan may be dealing with some more Severe Weather up around the u. P. Of michigan. So well continue to watch that here at home. As we mentioned, its all clear. Temperatures will be warming up, but it will be windy today as were seeing High Pressure building which giving us now the clear skies. And we also have low pressure thats just off to our east. And that Pressure Gradient is going to make it windy for today, especially in the north bay where we could see some of those winds 15 to 25mph. And some of those gusts up to 45mph. Well be watching that, and well talk about the high heat thats coming our way as well. Mike, youve been watching a crash. Whats the update now . We have a crew on the scene, carey. And before they can get the shot up there, they gave me the update. The scene has just cleared here. Alum rock avenue at harriet. Thats great news. Because of traffic flow, at least for traffic flow.
