Right now at 11 00. Tensions escalate at Columbia University. Take a look. The nypd in riot gear arresting protesters that took over that building right in the heart of campus. New pictures from inside that building show barricades and broken glass. The protests at columbia inspired this movement thats now spread across the country. And that includes right here in the bay area, where those encampments remain in place at San Francisco state, uc berkeley and stanford. Nbc bay areas Jocelyn Moran is at stanford tonight. Jocelyn, students are paying close attention to whats happening on the east coast. Yeah, exactly. Now, right here at stanford, everything remains peaceful as it has the last few days. But propalestinian protesters are very well aware as to whats going on at other universities like columbia. One person we did speak to tonight saying that they want those who are getting arrested to know that they here are with them tonight. Chaos at Columbia University as police in riot gear moved in. Nypd saying about 100 people have been arrested. Officers were seen using a vehicle with a ramp to access the second floor window of Hamilton Hall, which protesters occupied early this morning. In addition to those inside the building, others outside were seen being placed in zip ties. This came after Columbia University tonight sent a letter asking the nypd for assistance before officers made their move, students had been warned to shelter in place. In a statement about why police were called, Columbia University says in part, quote, after the University Learned overnight that Hamilton Hall had been occupied, vandalized and blockaded. We were left with no choice tonight, nypd says Hamilton Hall is now cleared. These are photos of the aftermath released by Columbia University. They show furniture stacked inside an elevator, broken windows and other damage, though its unclear who is responsible for it. While this was all unfolding on the east coast, protesters at stanford university, we were watching. I hope that people around the country will use them as a model for action and for change. Honestly, i pray for them and i thank them because they are leading a very, very difficult fight. At white plaza, everything remained peaceful tonight. Tents remain up with signs around the encampment. Its a similar scene at uc berkeley and at San Francisco state. Go back home. But all is not calm. At every campus in california. At cal poly humboldt, officers in riot gear moved in on protesters there early this morning. They had been occupying two buildings for several days. Like protesters on other campuses, theyre calling for the university to divest from companies doing business in israel. At least 35 people were arrested. Now, here at stanford, the university has said that students violating University Policy could face consequences up to even suspension. The protester who i spoke with tonight says there is fear around that. But that fear does not compare to what students at other universities have been facing, nor what people in gaza are currently facing at stanford. Im Jocelyn Moran, nbc, bay area news jocelyn, thank you. Israel is a central part, of course, of these protests. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is saying israel will move ahead with an attack on rafah, with or without a hostage deal. Thousands of palestinians, tens of thousands have fled to rafah, a Southern City in the gaza strip. Secretary of state Antony Blinken for the United States again met with arab leaders in jordan today, trying to broker a cease fire. The proposal on the table right now would see hamas free around 33 hostages. In exchange, israel would agree to a 40 day cease fire and the release of potentially thousands of palestinian prisoners. Tomorrow more protests are expected may 1st on the calendar, which is known as may day, a day of action demonstrations are planned across the bay area, including one at the port of oakland. Protesters plan to shut down the port. This is video from when that happened in january at another protest. Other protests are planned for San Francisco, san jose, santa rosa and sonoma. All right, we finally have the results of that recount in the closely watched race to replace retiring congresswoman anna eshoo. So tonight, the tie for second place appears to have been broken. Santa clara county published its results late this afternoon. Evan low gained 11 votes and joe simitian gained seven. The recount found no change in San Mateo County, so for now, low is ahead by four votes. Now, if this stands low, will face former san jose mayor sam liccardo in november. But its not over yet. There are 16 ballots still in their envelopes in San Mateo County that have never been counted. Those votes are still being challenged. Ballots arrived after the deadline, and both the county and Postal Service are investigating the postmarks on those envelopes to decide if they should be admitted. What what they have to look for right now is there a full postmark, are there may be two, which sometimes can happen. Is one, what about a postmark that isnt fully stamped . Only partially. What do you do with that . What do you do about the ballot without a postcard . In which case you have to go back and you can trace it. The post office can trace these things as to where they came from. The recount was requested by a former liccardo campaign staffer. After weeks of steering clear of questions, liccardo issued a Statement Today saying, quote, i did not request this recount. Neither i or nor anyone in my campaign has communicated with padilla or his donors about the recount, adding the candidates and their campaigns cannot lawfully communicate with independent expenditure groups. Meanwhile, when will you cast your vote . Tonight, the Alameda County board of supervisors certified the signatures collected in the effort to recall District Attorney pamela price, but theres still no date on the calendar for the recall election. That actually wont be determined for another two weeks. Nbcs pete serratos has the details in person. Yes and no, and yes and yes. The Alameda County board of supervisors unanimously voting to certify the signature submitted to recall District Attorney pamela price. But the board says it will need some time to decide when to hold the recall election. It will make its final decision at a special meeting on may 14th. Pico boulevard price pico boulevard price. Its a hot button issue that continues to create divisions within the community, with supporters and opponents of the recall demonstrating in front of the county Administration Building prior to the meeting. Will that happen to me . I have no trust in pamela price, many of them going inside the board room to express their opinions during a spirited Public Comment portion of the meeting, but recall organizers are feeling disappointed that the board is still waiting to decide on a date for the vote. The special election will alleviate some of the losses that still can happen right now, with her directives. Public safety is priceless, so we cannot afford to wait any longer to for this special election. Meantime opponents of the recall feel the da isnt getting a fair shot at doing the job she was elected to do. Theyre putting on her the burden of eight years ago and even 30 years ago. Like come in immediately. Da pam and just wipe away crime. Make us safe prior to tonights certification, the da herself accused recall organizers of breaking the law to gather signatures and money for the recall accusations. Recall organizers dispute. Price says the state is now investigating. I am concerned for our community that people would be able to come in with money and overturn an election, that people would be able to come in and bring people in who would lie and mislead the public before the may 14th meeting, the board will have to consider the cost of a special election, which could range from 15 to 20 million. Some county residents have said it should just be added to the November Ballot to save money. I cant say that im confident. Im just hoping that all the work that weve done and what the community has asked for is what theyll consider in oakland. Pete serratos, nbc, bay area news. Well tonight, police are trying to figure out what led to a crash near san jose state. A man riding a scooter was hit and suffered life threatening injuries. It happened this afternoon on 10th street, right near campus. Investigators say two cars were also involved and when officers arrived, the victim was under one of those cars. A witness heard it all happen. I heard, like, a lot of commotion. Somebody sound like somebody screaming. So then i went to the window, actually, and i seen the car and i seen Somebody Just lay it out. So i was like, oh my goodness. So then i went outside and looked like somebody was actually under a car. At last check, the rider of that scooter remains in critical condition. No word yet if he has any ties to san jose state campus. Police sent a message to students letting them know that if they saw the crash, there are Counseling Services available. A suspected shoplifter picked the wrong store on the wrong day. This is new video of Police Chasing and detaining a man suspected of stealing from the target store in san mateos bridgepoint shopping center. This happened actually march 14th. That same day, an organized Retail Theft Task force happened to be working in the area. The task force is made up of officers from daly city, san bruno and san mateo. Some big changes may be coming to a menu near you. A decision today by the state attorney general means there can be no surcharges, added to your restaurant tab. Everything must be included in the price you see on that menu. And as nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney found out, its leaving a bad taste in the mouth of some restaurant owners. 2315 if youve ever wondered how your check at a restaurant got so high, help may be on the way. California attorney general rob bonta has ruled that the ban on hidden fees for hotels and concert and sports tickets, approved by lawmakers last october also applies to restaurants. The price varies on the menu. Thats the way it is, you know, and we dont add anything at il torno restaurant in San Franciscos north beach, owner Santino Esposito says he has never charged a hidden or junk fee, such as a percentage for employees health care or higher wages. Its always been right there in the price on his menu. I work myself more, you know, i cut off some employee if i have to, so i work more. So i dont need to charge people any extra fees. But many restaurants are concerned that adding these surcharges to the price on the menu could cause sticker shock, says Golden Gate Restaurant Association executive director lori thomas will that being up front and center cause people to dine out less . And if people continue to dine out less, we do have a struggling restaurant industry. Many restaurants, especially larger ones, do charge the socalled hidden fees. Owners and managers at restaurants here in north beach tonight declined our invitation to talk to us on camera, but some said it is not going to help. Will i lose enough money that i have to either lay people off or i cant make it work anymore . We asked some diners how they like their pricing all up front, or tell me later. On the one hand, i like to pay the price that thats advertised because that feels good. Someone says its going to be 9. Its 9 for me. I am definitely okay with it being added to the check. I dont need to see that up front. Im not choosing a restaurant or a hotel based exclusively on price. A lot of it is about the experience. Restaurants dont have long to prepare for the menu changes. The new state law goes into effect july 1st in San Francisco, Terry Mcsweeney nbc, bay area news. Well, speaking of the city, how do you get people back to downtown San Francisco . Heres a live look tonight. Leaders have been brainstorming about this for a couple of years now. Ever since the height of the pandemic. One supervisor wants to create an Investment Fund to lure a college to the embattled downtown corridor. So were proposing today a downtown educational zone. Were going to create a fund that includes city money, that includes the ability to go out and get philanthropy and private Foundation Dollars to purchase buildings in the downtown. If the idea sounds familiar to it is mayor breed has been pushing a plan to attract a historically black college or university to downtown. Sapphires plan differs because hes proposing to buy the properties rather than ask universities to lease them from existing owners. Were back in 60s. Up next, get ready to pay more at the pump. Well have the updated timing and totals to for running a brothel out of a home. Police say they first received a tip in november that something suspicious was going on inside this house on 16th street. They also saw different women with luggage get picked up at night, constantly seeing like men come from like as early as, like nine, 10 a. M. All the way up to like two in the morning, and just every hour on the hour. The fbi helped with this investigation. Juang louis. Hes the suspect seen here. Was arrested earlier this month. Californias gas tax will increase by 0. 02 from 0. 58 a gallon to 0. 60. So why . Well, state excise tax on fuel is supposed to pay for road repair, goes up every year to adjust for inflation. The ceo of California Forever announced today that his company has secured more than enough signatures to qualify for the November Ballot. The Solano County registrar is now in the process of verifying all those signatures. California forever said it wants to build a Green Community in east Solano County. The group claims it would include thousands of homes, walkable neighborhoods, shopping, dining and open space. But many local and National Leaders dont like the plan. I think the reality is theres a theres a small but vocal group of opponents who really dislike the project. But the more people in the county learn about it, and the more they look at the facts, instead of all of this misinformation thats been put out there, the more people are beginning to say, why is anyone against this . They have said that they will pay their fair share. Well, now, whos going to pay the remaining share . It will be the taxpayers of Solano County of california. And sure, as were talking, theyre going to try to get federal money to build the infrastructure. The group is bankrolled by a group of some Silicon Valley billionaires. The county registrar of Voters Office says it will likely take several weeks to count, and verify those signatures. Meanwhile for the first time in almost five years, californias population is growing. Governor newsom releasing new numbers today, showing our state gained 67,000 residents last year. State officials attribute the rise to an improvement in immigration policies and the growth in the native population. The state estimates california now has is now home to more than 39 million people. This is a different population boom at San Franciscos pier 39. More than 800 sea lions have returned to the docks. Thats actually the highest number in seven years. Harbormaster says this population boom is the result of a huge school of anchovy coming from the Farallon Islands near the golden gate bridge, pier says sea lions have been a popular attraction since they first swarmed the docks after the 1989 loma prieta earthquake.
