Complaints in the Antioch School district is sparking action. What the superintendent is doing tonight, after numerous stories by our Investigative Unit and part two of our latest installment of race in america, the complicated history of an east Bay Community that has since been wiped off the map. The personal and emotional journey for one of our colleagues to learn about her familys past. There welcome back. The news at 530 starts right now. Thanks so much for joining us. Im janelle wang and im raj mathai. A shocking and disheartening story involving a South Bay School community. The pta president is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from from the school. Nbcs ian cole has the exclusive new details on the arrest and investigation. The parents at shollenberger Elementary School in san jose say theyre disgusted after hearing the former president of their home and School Association allegedly stole more than 400,000 from the schools account. Prosecutors claim the theft happened over four years when she was the group president. 51 year old taissa night was arrested by San Jose Police tuesday. Investigators say between 2019 and 2023, night wrote 45 checks to herself and her husband. Now these were supposed to be reimbursement checks for services that werent even rendered right. So she had invoices that werent true, werent real. The investigation began when night left her position on the board last summer. Melissa martin is one of the new Board Members who took over and noticed serious discrepancies. Thats when the board contacted san jose unified and then Police Things really didnt add up. Money spent didnt add up to what we knew programing had cost over the years. And as we dug into it, just money was missing. Its money that kids and parents fundraise for all year to fund arts, music and other programs. Martin says the missing money meant science and recess programs were canceled at the start of the school year, and they had to delay giving teachers stipends for their classroom after a nine month investigation. Parents say night was arrested on tuesday shortly after leaving campus. I was glad to see that the investigation had gotten to that point, and that the police and the das office had done their Due Diligence to finally bring charges. While night gave up her position on the board last year, she still worked at the school as an office specialist. She faces three felony counts for grand theft and forgery. Shes being held on 80,000 bail in san jose. Ian cole nbc, bay area news. More turmoil for another school district. Our exclusive reporting of antioch unified. The superintendent there has now removed herself from overseeing investigations on bullying complaints. This comes after our Investigative Unit reported about her director of facilities , that man, ken turnage. Employees say turnage is bullying included putting a workers desk on a roof using school resources. Theres the desk under that canopy. They say hes managed to get away with it because hes good friends with the superintendent. Stephanie anello, and her husband and antiochs former police chief, turnage anello and her husband have not responded to any of our questions. In an email to Board Members, superintendent anello said before she recused herself, she launched two investigations, one on the overall situation and the other looking at specific concerns reported by nbc bay area last week. Anello also says she has voluntarily removed herself from the investigative proceedings. Weve asked the district multiple times who will be conducting these investigations. We have yet to receive an answer. Two Board Members questioned if those investigations will truly be independent, given that some of the complaints are against the superintendent herself, theyre holding a special Board Meeting tonight at 7 00 to talk about possible disciplinary actions against the superintendent. Unraveling the history of russell city in east bay. Community wiped off the map tonight in the second part of our two part series, race in america. The conversation in our Jodi Hernandez opens up about her familys roots in russell city, a city in Alameda County neglected and destroyed. Jodi sees for the first time where her family once lived and interviews her father, joe hernandez, who has never talked about russell city until now. I never told anybody about russell city because there was some shame there. Yeah, its hard to talk about it. Its hard to have this conversation with you about that. Its just like a dark secret for me. How come . Dad, i was hiding it because i think if somebody knew who i was or where i came from, that i would have. I wouldnt have any friends all these years. All these years. And i never knew my familys history in russell city. My father, joe hernandez, lived there until the age of nine. I found out because i called my parents one night and they told me they watched a documentary called the apology the slum. The end result of this disease threatening the vitality of the entire community. The film features russell City Residents and their descendants. Established in 1853, russell city today would be located south of hayward regional shoreline near the hayward airport. It is now some 200 acres of industrial warehouse houses. Tell me what you remember about russell city. I lived on my, grandma and grandpas property on her property. She also had a little house. To me, it was more like a shack. And no bathroom. No back in those days in russell city, they had no. Nobody had a showers or anything like that. We had what they called a. On a house. I guess you would call it outside. There was a sink out there with a wash rag. You just clean yourself off as best you could. My dad made the best of the living conditions. He spoke very Little English school was difficult, but my father also remembered some happy times too. As a little boy, i did have a certain amount of happiness, mostly within myself. You know, i would get wrapped up in making little toys or whatever. Well, my grandmother and grandfather were just beautiful. They treated us so nice. Nearly 60 years ago, russell city was bulldozed and sold off to developers. Alameda county and the city of hayward forced 1400 residents out, wiping russell city off the map. Well, obviously what they did was wrong. I mean, it was racism, pure and simple. They didnt want us there. I didnt know or think or think about why. I just thought its just the way it is. We used to play on these tracks. We used to jump them. My fathers cousin, richard lopez, met us to show us some of the beginnings of our family in russell city. Lopezs father owned a Restaurant Bar called california cafe. So our property was right here. And it came out this way. I mean, this was where you guys grew up, and now its. Yeah. Yeah. Industrial. Yeah. And thats why thats why a lot of the people now want reparations. Because they hardly gave them any money for all their lots and their land, their businesses, you know, that was their livelihood. They cut them all out a few blocks away, we saw where my dad once lived. And from there to here, we figure its about where the property was at of grandma and joe. Joe lived on the corner and grandmas house be back here, dad . Yeah. Whats that like for you to be here . Where you. Well does that tell you anything . Its sad. Yeah part of our souls are still here, though. Oh, yeah . Yeah, yeah, you could feel it. The city may be gone, but the memories live on. Oh. Thats cool. This large mural at eighth street and maple court is one of the few reminders left of the community. It also shows the great ray charles, who performed in russell city. What do you think you got from russell city . I think that it shaped me in a sense that it just made me want to prove to myself and anybody else that im worthy of. Anything. Just like anybody else. You know that i didnt want to do this, but i, i, i believe that i owe it to you. Im proud of you, dad. Oh. Thank you, jody. I needed to hear that. Im proud of myself, too. That was our jody hernandez. We want to thank her and her family for sharing their story with us. So much history in the east bay to watch part one of our series on russell city. Just go to nbc bay area. Com race in america. Nbc bay area and telemundo 48 are supporting our schools already. Our annual backpack drive is underway im chris kamara live in palo alto ill show you how you can participate from the comfort of your home next. Looks like a great time chris. Looking forward to that. Right now on our satellite radar picture we are tracking a new storm off to the north. Ill have details on how much wind and where t but were already looking ahead to the next school year. Our goal is really simple here help families who cant afford the back to school basics. Lets bring in nbcs chris kamara, who joins us this evening from palo alto. And chris whats happening where you are and how can people help. Well raj im here at town and Country Village where were wrapping up our very first backpack donation event of the year. Im proud to say that with the family giving tree, weve seen dozens upon dozens of people here. I know its early. Schools not even out for summer. And here we are talking about back to school. But thats because family giving teresa is the need is a nearconstant. Theres something new this year in requesting donations from viewers like you family giving tree says they talked to teachers and other educators, and they said kids need things like they need a hydration bottle, a water bottle. Basically, they need also help with dental hygiene. So theyre adding these items to the usual supplies that they give kids to start off their school year on the right foot, both from an academic standpoint, but also from a hygienic standpoint. So yeah, you can join us. By the way, you dont have to come out here to palo alto, although well be out here until 6 00. If you would like to join our suppting our schools campaign, you can do so right now. From the comfort of your home. Were going to put up a qr code on screen right now. You can snap it with your smartphone that will take you to our weite, where you can read about the campaign. And you can also make a contribution to help put a backpack on the back of a child in need in around the bay area, a child who desperately will need that backpack to start the school year right after we get through the summer. Back to you guys. Thank you chris. Thats very helpful for a lot of families. Its interesting you said were not even at summer break yet. Yet were were talking about whats happening in the fall. Yes. Like these donations. So many children need them. You got to. Yeah. Those supplies i still remember the trapper keepers. You guys remember those . Every different color. The peachys, trapper keepers. Oh, yeah. I had a backpack with a was like a shape, like a locker. The thing was huge, but, you know, you could put all your stuff in it, and its just so important to have. Yeah. New School Supplies to get the year off. Right. Okay. Lets talk about our weather. Weve had some cloudy skies the last couple of days, but things will be turning around for the weekend. We got some sun on the way saturday and sunday tomorrow. Still a little bit of a speed bump in the forecast here. Some wind to talk about. Even the chance here of a few showers. Lets move it into that microclimate forecast and it has been cool for a lot of us with some of that cloud cover. Even though we did get in on a little bit of sunshine this afternoon. Right now, you know, things are kind of out of whack when San Francisco is the same temperature as livermore. This time of the year. So were right now at 60 degrees, not only at the coastline, but back here to some of our inland valleys. And thats all from this next system thats dropping down from the north. But this one is going to set itself up pretty differently here from our usual winter storms or early spring storms. The way this is setting up, its going to be developing over the land. So theres just no way its going to be able to pull in strong pacific moisture. So thats why we only have a slight chance of a spotty shower, but it will get that wind going out here across the bay area through tomorrows forecast. So lets go ahead and take it into friday morning. So tomorrow anywhere from 15 to about 26mph. Wind variable. Generally though coming out of the north and the west, we really think its going to start to pop with some of these stronger gusts here by three four and 5 00. Thats when you want to watch out. If youre doing any kind of traveling, may get a few trees that come down during this time period, especially near the coastline in the peninsula. Thats where some of the mountains could get up to about 50mph in that magenta color. Then we should start to see this wind calming down as we head through saturday morning. For most of us, ill be at the coastline, including San Francisco. Looks to stay on the breezy side right through this weekend, 15 to about 25mph. Now, when it comes to the rainfall, i think were primarily dry for most of us for tomorrow morning. Just the chance here of some spotty drizzle. Then as we head through the afternoon, right up towards napa county, right here at 230, could get a few showers bubbling up. Wed see that move down here to contra costa, alameda counties on the eastern side by about 5 p. M. Tomorrow. So discovery bay, brentwood, pittsburg, antioch, maybe concord and livermore with a chance here of some showers. And then all of that would clear out as we head through saturday for some dry weather and sunshine returning. So best rain chances overall. Certainly the Central Valley and then the sierra would be getting in on about 1 to 3in of snow. Were not really looking at a whole lot again for us, but just the chance we may get some of those pop up showers coming your way as we move through tomorrows forecast. Well start it off here at 52 in the peninsula. Trivalley at 50. Were dipping it down to 52 in the east bay and low 50s San Francisco over to the north bay. Daytime highs as we move through tomorrow. Staying on the cool side. Just 65 here in san jose for the east bay 67 vallejo 63 in hayward. Got you to 62, in redwood city, San Francisco 58, in the marina up here for clear lake, coming in at 64. Look at this ten day forecast. Well get in on some upper 70s by next tuesday and wednesday. Likely more 70s hanging on as we head through early next week on that 7day forecast. Breezy again in San Francisco through this weekend and well keep those inland highs up to 72. Saturday 74 on sunday. So at least we clear out all this wacky weather out of here. Then we got some nice weather moving on in. Thats a nice six days ahead of there. I agree 100. Thanks chef jeff. Yeah. All right. Its the end of april and the nfl is center stage for the next few days. Yeah theres no games happening. Its the draft. So what are the 40 niners going to do tonight. Were going to go live to congratulations new millionaires. The nfl draft is happening right now in detroit. Its fun. The 40 niners have the 31st overall pick. Thats what happens when you go to the super bowl. Theyre patiently waiting their turn. Who are they going to draft. Are they going to make a trade. Lets bring in nbcs Anthony Flores who joins us from levis stadium. Anthony, what do we know . Well, first of all, hey guys from outside levis stadium. You know, tonight dreams become a reality as players make that huge leap from college to the nfl. The 49 ers have ten picks in this years nfl draft beginning with number 31 near the end of tonights first round. This will be the first time in three years the niners will pick in the first round of the nfl draft, along with tonights pick. The niners also have a second and a third round selection on friday. Theyll have seven picks on saturday, including three in the fourth round. They could use depth on the offensive and defensive lines at defensive back and wide receiver. Now, even with the loss of Eric Armstead and a few other key players, the 40 niners still have a loaded roster. Theres not a lot of needs on this team. Theres but but theres things like a couple of years out. Theres things a year out and then theres got theres opportunities where guys can come in. And while the glaring, you know, spot that a guy can come in and be the starter right away may not be there. Theres a number of spots that we see probably more than people might think where there is opportunity. Now this is a big weekend for the 40 niners and for their fans. The faithful are out in force. Theres a couple of draft watch parties there. Private here tonight at levis stadium. Weve got hardcore fans, season Ticket Holders and vips. Now who the team should draft depends on who you ask, but there is one common theme fans want players who can help take this team to the next level. Offensive linemen. We need offensive linemen, but thats not a sexy position. Its what we need. We need to protect parties, let them get do his thing. We just need a pick. Somebody whos ready to come into the team and put forth that effort. Honestly, theres a lot of good rookies coming into the league this year and i just hope we get whats best for the team. Well, i think we better keep our, you know, no. Yeah. Theres been a lot of trade rumors about brandon aiyuk, but as of right now. Hold on. Let me check my phone. Yeah, hes still on the team. The 40 niners are scheduled to pick 31st tonight live at levis stadium. Anthony flores, nbc, bay area. Keep checking that phone. He might not be on the team in 20 minutes from now. Thank you. Anthony. I hope he stays with the niners. Okay. Thanks, anthony. Still ahead. You might not have to fight for a seat when flying on Southwest Airlines norman, bad news. Choosing your own seat may become a thing of the past. You know, southwest only has Economy Class does not have assigned seating. So you kind of do that a line and the b line and the c line. One idea is to start assigning seats, just like all the other airlines. No word on when or if the changes will come. I mean, if youre going to go, go big, i suppose. Audrey asistio joins us now with whats coming up next. All right. Janelle and raj right now at six, they did it again. A group that wants safer streets in San Francisco doing their own roadwork on a popular bike route. One of them explains why they did it without the citys permission. Also, a big decision that could impact your internet speed. The fcc restores Net Neutrality after the policy was rolled back years ago. The news at six starts right now. Good evening, and thanks for being with us. Im raj mathai and im audrey asistio. Over the last couple of years, a group called the safe street rebels has made it their mission to make socalled guerrilla traffic improvements to several city streets. Their efforts have usually come after a tragic crash or spike in problems for pedestrians or cyclists. And now theyre trying to slow down car traffic through one of the most popular bicycle routes in the city, nbc bay area Sergio Quintana explains. For those who do not know the wiggle, its a designated bike route through the dubose triangle neighborhood up to the panhandle neighborhood in San Francisco. Its called the wiggle because it zigzags through the neighborhoods to make it easier for bikes to get up the steep inclines. Its extremely popular, but has also been a place where cyclists and drivers mix and what can be a frustrating way. This week, the street rebel group decided to install markers in the middle of the street along the start of the route on steiner. This is video the group shared with us a member also agreed to speak with us on the condition we did not identify them. We put the signs in the middle of the street because we wanted to slow traffic down. As you can see, theres highly trafficked corridor here. The group says the additions went up Tuesday Morning in the video they shared, you can see a combination of signs and Yellow Center line guides. The person we interviewed told us they also extended some of the red warning curbs to 20ft at crosswalks to comply with
