Were seeing light rain through parts of san jose, along the 5, through parts of the Santa Cruz Mountains as well. A little scattered activity through San Francisco. As far as accumulations, no major impacts expected. Were talking trace amounts, less than a tenth of an inch for almost everybody. Were going to see the majority of the rain not be that problematic. Even with the next system arriving tomorrow. Temperaturewise in san jose, 53 degrees, notice the timestamps, 12 00, 1 00, we start to climb to about 60 degrees. When the sun comes out, well get a break from the rain. Mike, how are those roads . One part of san jose is still jammed up solid. We saw one car using the shoulder. Dont do that unless chp has allowed that for traffic flow. They may need that for emergency vehicles, north 101 at mckee. No change in the update as far as what is going on, but the crash was reported in the second lane and everything did completely stop for a few seconds. I think they may be trying to move vehicles or doing a break so they can get some progress on the crash. No major injuries reported. Were seeing some folks take 280, thats pushing as the volume build through san jose. That is shifting part of your commute. Breaking news this morning out of San Francisco, this is where the chp is investigating a deadly hitandrun. It happened about 1 30 this morning when a car struck a pedestrian in lanes on westbound interstate 80 near the 5th street offramp. For some time all of the traffic was diverted. So far theres no vehicle description. If anyone may have witnessed what happened there, they are asked to contact chp. New this morning, an east Bay School District is under fire after a teachers alleged sexual behavior with a student. Now parents want to know how the teacher was hired in the first place. Today in the bays kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom. You got the superintendents response . Reporter the superintendent wants to know how this teacher was hired and whether there was anything the district missed. This is a teacher who is a fifth grade teacher and has been working at the same school for five years, hired after he was tried and acquitted of child molestation at a napa school. Matthew shelton is charged with five felony counts of lewd acts with a child sometime in 2022 when he was a teacher in benicia. The district says he was not a teacher at the school or in the district this school year. He is due to appear in court later today on those charges. But in addition to those five felony counts that he faces today, shelton was arrested and tried in 2008 for allegedly touching two students inappropriately, 8 and 9yearold girls. He was acquitted by a jury in 2008, and in just the last few hours, the benicia unified School District superintendent released a video statement. Here is part of it. We believe having an independent review of our systems will reinforce the comprehensiveness of our practices, and it may offer additional recommendations for consideration. We will not shy away from embracing actions that will strengthen our commitment to excellence across our operations and service to students. Reporter you heard the superintendent talk about an independent review. He says that the review is going to go over the hiring and supervision of teachers and staff. The districts process of how and how fast it handles complaints of impropriety and they will work with teachers and students to make sure they feel empowered to advocate for themselves. Today marks one year since the pajaro river levee broke, the breach sent water rushing into the small farming town in monterey county. A majority of the homes there flooded, displacing about 3,500 people. It later came to light that federal officials knew for decades that the levee was at risk of failing. Shortly after the flooding, emergency repairs were made on the levee. The project aimed at a more permanent solution is expected to start later this year. This is over in the midmarket neighborhood, so these two musicians were playing outside along Market Street yesterday. This is all part of a new music project. It is called busk it and it will connect local musicians and businesses along Market Street. During the launch, more than 25 musicians played on the sidewalk. The initiative will go on until november. Local musicians will perform weekly. Happening today, a new era in bay area racing getting the green light with a new test drive for charity. If you tuned into today in the bay on friday, you saw us tracking it all with lots of twists and turns. Ill tell you what, its a great ride. Ive been on this track a number of times over the years with the old pavement. Whoa, this is the most fun ive had out here. You recognize our own bob redell there. He was taking a test drive on the new track at sonoma raceway. It just underwent its First Complete repaving in 23 years. At 9 00 this morning, the drive for charity gets under way. People can sign up to take three laps around the track in their own cars. All proceeds are benefiting the speedway Childrens Charity sonoma, which helps children and families in need. Is he driving . No, no. I was, like, wait a minute. We saw him in studio today, so we know hes okay. It should be a nice day, too. You know, just aside from some cloud cover, the rain is not going to make a big impact. And then we are going to settle into such a nice stretch of weather. Im talking upper 70s on the maps. Stick around, because im going to let you know when that will come into play. Right now we do have scattered activity over satellite radar, you can see in the south bay, and then through the interior, the trivalley. Hourbyhour outlook, lets move into that. So 7 00, mostly cloud cover. The Second System starts to move north to south overnight late, late tonight into early tomorrow morning. So if you notice in the timestamp, right up here, its about 2 30, then it becomes more south spread into about 5 00, 6 00, 7 00. By 8 00, notice San Francisco, livermore, through parts of san jose as well. And of course the sierra, there is a special Weather Statement in effect for the sierra because the winds will pick up as the system moves through, and just as quickly as that system moves in, it clears out. By wednesday, well see some cloud cover lingering, but the conditions will be dry, and thats going to set us up for a nice stretch. I want to show you how much rain were going to get. The first system late last night into today, very light and scattered. Less than a tenth of an inch, parts of ukiah, a little over a quarter of an inch. By the time we see the Second System, we do see more filling out through parts of the south bay, including livermore, san jose, stretching through morgan hill and gilroy. And then parts of the santa cruz coastal mountain areas will see from a quarter to under half an inch. Even the Second System, not a big rainmaker. As far as the sierra, well see higher accumulations, king dale, 7 inches of snow, kirk wood, 4 inches. And the gusty winds will pick upwards of 60 plus miles per hour. You want to check travel conditions, even though theres no winter warnings in effect. Today we see temperatures climb into the low 60s as we inch closer toward your wednesday forecast. Well start to notice temperatures climbing, and then i know you wanted to see the 70s because i talked about it. San francisco even expecting some 70s by the time we get to thursday and friday. Those temperatures will really bump up for inland areas. Look at this, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, were talking upper 70s. 76 degrees, could get warmer in some of the inland valleys. So quite a stunning weekend. We can start celebrating as early as the system moves out tomorrow. I think we can celebrate as long as you say its okay. Over here, no celebration, but there might be better news. North 101, i see this starting to steadily move and theres been i think chp has cleared the scene. Happening today, jewish students at uc berkeley will protest what they call a lack of action by the school to protect students. It follows a chaotic incident on the campus two weeks ago. One professor now staging his own sitin protest. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is live for us in berkeley this morning. So, ginger, talk to us about this. What is expected to happen today . Reporter well, later today, marcus and laura, jewish students will march in a protest theyre calling liberate the gate and theyre marching in protest to say that the university is lacking in its action to protect the physical safety of jewish students, as well as their right to free speech. Now, this follows a protest thats happening actually that continues to happen from one of the universitys professors. Its happening at the Social Sciences Building here on campus. It is happening at the office of ron hassner, the chair of israel studies here at berkeley. He started his protest saying he will teach, eat and sleep in his office, that will be open at all hours of the day and night to students who do not feel safe or have been subjected to antisemitic abuse, or students who wish to chat. He wrote, quote, i am pessimistic that this will sway the administration certainly in the short term. I am willing to wait it out as long as i can. But the main reason im doing this is not to exert indirect pressure on campus leaders, but to signal to you students that we, the faculty, care. Professor hassners sitin comes after propalestinian students disrupted a event that was abruptly canceled because of security concerns. Since that time, the federal government has launched a discrimination investigation for its handling of antisemitism. This, despite the schools strong condemnation of the incident, saying in part, quote, we share your anger and concern, and we understand that we must do all that we can to prevent anything like this from happening again. Now, todays march will start at noon with a rally to follow at 12 15. That will take place at california hall. The march will start from the playhouse to california hall. And that is aimed, organizers say, to pressure the university and its leaders to suspend certain student groups that are being investigated for that february incident. Well, a shooting on the bay bridge left one Person Injured over the weekend, and officers are still looking for that shooter. So this happened around 8 20 saturday night, and the chp says that woman was driving on the eastern span of the bridge just past yerba buena island, when another car pulled next to her, started shooting at her car. The woman was hit, but chp is saying that it was not lifethreatening injuries. The chp closed four of the five eastbound lanes for about two hours to investigate. Anyone with information is urged to call police. One east bay city is trying to add a little spice to its restaurant scene and move the bay area forward after the difficult years during the pandemic. Theres recovery now northbound. But youre starting the slowdown at capitol expressway. Its pushing over to 87 and also 280 is seeing some folks try to get out of that. Things should recover for the south bay. Standard for the east bay, no problems for the peninsula. And in the rest of the quadrant, Contra Costa County shows a build over toward the richmond bridge. Thats when a car struck a pedestrian in lanes on westbound interstate 80 near 5th street offramp. Now, for some time all of the traffic was diverted. So far, theres no vehicle description. Anyone who witnessed what happened, you are asked to contact police. A shooting on the bay bridge left one Person Injured over the weekend. Officers are still looking for the shooter. It happened about 8 20 saturday night. The chp says the woman was driving on the eastern span of the bridge just past yerba buena island. Another car pulled next to her and started shooting. The woman was hit, but chp says it was not lifethreatening. The chp closed four of the five eastbound lanes for about two hours to investigate. Anyone with information should call the chp. A former benicia schoolteacher is due in court, accused of lewd acts with a child. Matthew shelton is charged with five felony counts. Prosecutors charged him shortly after he left his teaching job at robert se me middle school.
