Its been only two weeks since that Court Decision brought ivf in alabama to a virtual standstill the reaction and frustration so palpable, lawmakers actually managed to pass new legislation in record time but questions still remain this morning about whether this new law can fully accomplish what it set out to do. Reporter this morning, fertility patients and doctors in alabama hoping a new law will now pave the way for them to restart ivf treatments left on hold for the last two weeks. All right, 29 aye, 1 nay, the Senate Concurs reporter the new legislation signed overnight by republican governor kay ivy meant to shield ivf clinics from costly lawsuits civil damages now also sharply limited, if an embryo is damaged or destroyed this bill gives us the ability to immediately offer ivf care to our patients reporter state lawmakers under pressure to pass something, fast, after the alabama Supreme Court found tro in the state to worry more lawsuits could follow, abruptly halting all ivf procedures. Patients like megan cole, left in limbo for weeks, now hoping to restart the ivf process once again, with the help of a surrogate. Were hopeful that although this has been probably the worst two weeks of our lives, that it will get back on track and we can move forward reporter but some lawmakers acknowledge the new law is only a temporary fix, doing nothing to tackle the underlying reasoning of the Court Decision, equating frozen embryos to children were not adjusting the courts central issue is by putting a bandaid on a hemorrhaging wound when were talking about refusing to address the actual constitutional crisis that we have created so, laura, some clinics are saying, lets wait a minute. Theres still a legal limbo that exists, that the politicians in alabama are trying to fix this, saying, okay, that state Supreme Court doesnt say what you think it might say but theres still kind of a legal gray area here yes, because they can still be sued, because, obviously, the Supreme Court decision trumps everything, right . Thats the highest court in the state. And they have still said that embryos are children all this does is cap the damages, right all this does is just reduce the money damages, that the clinics would have to pay if any of the embryos are destroyed. So it shrinks liability, but in no way they cant go in there and reverse what the alabama Supreme Court did. No. But the clinics say it does provide some comfort, but again, it all depends on how much risk theyre willing to take. And the ntsb chair did confirm that those inspections have not turned up any missing bolts on any other max9s in service. The 26yearold Hannah Gutierrezreed is now await in sentencing for that charge the family of Halyna Hutchins says they are happy with the decision alec baldwin will go on trial this summer and many are wondering if this verdict will help or hurt him more than two years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on the new mexico set of the alec bald winled movie rust, hannah gutierrezreid has been found guilty the jury deliberated for just two and a half hours juror Albert Sanchez spoke to nbcs dana griffin moments after the verdict came down. You have live rounds there and you dont even know it, youre not checking them, theres a problem. Reporter the 26yearold in custody awaiting sentencing could face up to 18 months in state prison when the verdict was read, gutierrezreed remained stone faced while her mother sobbed. During the trial, gutierrezreeds actions leading up to the shooting came under fire she was negligent, careless, thoughtless. Emotional testimony, detailing the moments after hutchins was shot. What did you say . Are you all right . Did she respond . Yes. She said, i cant feel my legs. Halls took thoughtless. Deadly weapon last year. Defense attorney jason bowles, who doubled down on blaming baldwin in closing arguments, says they will appeal the verdict. The evidence wasnt sufficient to convict. Reporter in a statement, hutchins family responding to the verdict, saying in part, we are satisfied that the jury found gutierrezreed guilty for her part in the taking of helanas life and look forward to the Justice System continuing to make sure that everyone else who was responsible for her death is required to face the legal consequences for their actions. This summer, baldwin, who was holding the gun when it discharged, will face one charge of Involuntary Manslaughter. The actor has pleaded not guilty and has repeatedly denied responsibility i didnt pull the trigger reporter the verdict bringing this tragic hollywood story one step closer to an ending nbc news has reached out to alec baldwins attorneys for comment, but we have not yet heard back his criminal trial is set to begin in july. Laura, it was a mixed verdict, but on the key charge, its a guilty finding, Involuntary Manslaughter its essentially criminal negligence and prosecutors had put on a pretty compelling case that she just didnt do her job she had one job that day, it was to check the gun, and she didnt properly do it and not only that, theyve showed at this trial but there were live rounds sitting on that set for days that were simply not discovered, through negligence or however, you know, they wanted to put it, but it just shows the atmosphere on the set. So also looming over this trial was alec baldwin do you think that this verdict helps him or hurts him i think on balance, this is probably working in his favor, because the person who was supposed to actually check the remember, a different jury, same judge, and the prosecutors, they now get sort of a sneak p weapon, they now have a guilty verdict in that case, but remember, a different jury, same judge, and the prosecutors, they now get sort of a sneak preview of exactly how theyre going to put on the case. Theyve now heard the exert testimony. And for baldwin, this is a battle of the experts. Its a sailing race around the world, and in its inaugural year, one of those ocean racers was an American Woman now navigating a new chapter in history. [ cheers and applause reporter sailing into spain, this is a historymaking moment for 29yearold cole brauer, finishing second in the global solo challenge, and becoming the First American woman ever to race nonstop around the world, alone. This is really cool fourmonth journey at sea, she faced hurricaneforce winds and 30foot waves. No watch as rough seas throw brauer across her boat, badly injuring her ribs. Ugh. Again, by yourself and there were moments you said that you could hear towards the end, your boat creaking and you were worried it might actually fail yeah, i think thats what happens, is that these manmade objects, theyre just not really made to deal with the type of situations that we put them under, and Mother Nature is incredible, and incredibly strong, and so we just dont really understand how powerful she is and you know, boats are going to start deteriorating. For sure Mother Nature is strong, i think youre stronger. We watched you get thrown across your boat, you cracked a rib, meantime, you still had to navigate, you still had to do all the work how did you manage that after that injury . , i wouldnt say that it was very easy, but there really is no option at that point. Youre so far away from land there is no rescue, theres no one to come and grab you you have to keep moving along, and keep doing everything. You have to feed yourself. Es on. And you have to use the toilet, you have to go outside, you have to do sail changes, you know, life goes on. And so, even with that, you have to keep working. Sailing is such a physical job. I love i think you told our producer, youre petite, but you arent dainty. But it is really a maledominated sport what is your message this morning . What are you hoping to get out of this . Youre 100 right its a fully maledominated world, and i think that it takes a lot of strength to actually push and try to strive into this industry and you know, i really want women to understand that its possible you have to go through a lot of, you know, bad talk and people treating you poorly and getting paid significantly less, but, in the end, if we you know, its all a numbers game, if we can all kind of Work Together and come together, i really think that we can move forward in the industry.
