Very good Tuesday Morning to you. 5 00. Thanks for starting your day with us. Im laura garcia. Im marcus washington. Well get a look at the commute with mike in just a bit. Vianey arana in for kari this morning. How is it looking today . Weve got something to our north that will bring a spotty chance. Spotty is the name of the game today, because based on where the satellite is showcasing the system, its pretty far north. In San Francisco its about 52 degrees, wind speeds are calm. Temperatures throughout, weve got 40s for san jose, 48 degrees, dublin 42, sonoma 51. Not too cold of a morning. This is what i was talking about. We do have a weaker low pressure system, and so far it looks like for folks who live north of the Golden Gate Bridge, youre probably going to see the most activity today. Areas south of the Golden Gate Bridge are not really going to get much. Tomorrow, even though this looks like it could pack a punch, its rather weak and a lot of it is going to remain offshore. Keep this in mind heading into this evening. As mike said, maybe just carry an umbrella so youre not caught off guard by light drizzle. I know you dont carry an umbrella. Were looking at a smooth drive around the bay. Green sensors on the peninsula, southbound 101 at 92 eastbound. In fact, it may have been 92 east with a quick traffic break. Looks like the Speed Sensors are back to green. Obviously, theres no major impact as far as the sensors are concerned. An easy drive toward the bay bridge. We did have a stall leaving San Francisco getting onto the lower deck of the bay bridge. You can see the lights moving smoothly in both directions. Thank you very much. With the arrival of super tuesday, california voters by tonight will most likely know who is left in the race to fill one very important u. S. Senate seat, replacing the late Dianne Feinstein this november. Today in the bays kris sanchez is here. This race all comes down to one republican and three democrats. There are quite a few names on those ballots, but we know that there are just a few that are truly viable. So for the first time in a very long time, Republican Voters are hopeful that there will be a more conservative voice speaking for california in the u. S. Senate. Republican steve garvey, a former pro baseball player with little political experience, has risen to the top of the polls, along with frontrunner adam schiff, a democrat, Southern Californias katie porter, who was in the bay area just yesterday, and also congresswoman barbara lee, who we know very well here in the bay area, who has great name recognition across the state, but not a lot of campaign cash. San franciscos gop chairman was out hanging campaign signs, pleased that california conservatives have a chance at a statewide race. With so many democratic candidates, the vote is split democraticspeaking, and if fewer people are voting, fewer people are also registering as democrats. That, combined with an excellent and outstanding Voter Registration number that showed the democrats losing about 40,000 voters and the republicans gaining about 60,000, a net increase between the two of 100,000. Reporter if you have looked at your ballot, you know there are two senate races, both for Dianne Feinsteins seat. One is to fill whats left, the other is for the full sixyear term. If you vote by mail, there is still time to drop your ballot off at a vote center or in a mailbox. All you need is for it to be postmarked by today. Thank you so much. California is not the only state holding or people heading to the polls today. Former President Trump heading into super tuesday with a major legal win that is expecting to dominate todays gop president ial contest. His challenger, nikki haley, is hoping for a major fundraising boost to keep her in the race. Brie jackson is in washington. There is certainly a lot at stake today. Reporter thats right. Good morning. You in california know theres a lot at stake, super tuesday, is the biggest election day on the primary calendar. More than a third of all available delegates for both republicans and democrats are up for grabs. Thank you very much. Reporter former President Trump starting this week off with a legal win, after the Supreme Court ruled he can stay on the ballot in colorado, reversing the states decision that disqualified him for his actions leading into the january 6th attack at the u. S. Capitol. Essentially you cannot take somebody out of a race because an opponent would like to have it that way. Reporter trump continues his dominant march toward the republican nomination. Former u. N. Ambassador nikki haley is not giving in. It is time for a new generational leader who can leave the negativity and baggage behind. Reporter Republican Voters in more than a dozen states and one territory weigh in this super tuesday, with more than 800 delegates at stake. Trump is favored to pick up political victories across the board. Hes also fighting off more Court Battles with his president ial immunity case coming before the court next month. If a president doesnt have full immunity, you really dont have a president. Because nobody that is serving in that office will have the courage to make, in many cases, what would be the right decision, or it could be the wrong decision. Reporter some voters are keeping a close eye on the fomer president s court cases. I would like to see where some of these cases go about surrounding the insurrection and see how that plays out. Reporter americans head to the polls today in what is said to be a Pivotal Moment in the race for the white house. And new polling shows former President Trump leading President Biden in a potential 2020 rematch within the margin of error. Back to you. Thank you very much, brie. Well, one south bay race is not a primary, but the election for the mayor of san jose, incumbent matt mahan squaring off against a challenger, and the election results, they will be the final say. Mahan is serving out a twoyear term, and thats because the year he was elected san jose voters chose to move the Mayoral Election to align with president ial years in hopes of improving voter turnout. Weve got you covered for tonights election results. Scan the qr code on your screen. That will take you right to our primary elections guide, or you can head to nbcbayarea. Com and then click on the super tuesday tab at the top of the page. We have all you need to know about those big races, candidates, and how to cast your ballot. 5 07. Happening today, a san pablo man accused of murdering his wife and motherinlaw is set to be arraigned. Police last thursday arrested phuc vo. Last september they say he first reported them missing, allegedly telling investigators the two drove to Southern California following a family argument. Police first sensed something suspicious when officers in december spotted him driving his wifes car, which they say was later discovered in oakland. Police arrested him based on evidence they say officers found inside the home. The major highways in tahoe finally back open, following blizzardlike conditions this past weekend. I80 once again open, but drivers must prepare for slower traffic because theres only one lane open in areas with heavier snow. Caltrans says that crews have been working around the clock to clear the snows from the highway, with the blizzard believing behind 11 feet of snow. The resorts are feeling the impact as well. This is video where crews there were digging out several feet of snow. The Operations Manager says it will be a slow process. Once we get the mountain dug out and the snow kind of pushed out where it needs to go, we get rid of all these big drifts, i think well have a great weekend coming up. Again, it is going to take us a couple of days to get the whole mountain dug out. Palisades tahoe reopened yesterday but not at full operation. Some ski lifts we main closed because of the storm. I know some people that are hunkered down there for a while. Tough for bay area folks to get up or come down. And with this weaker system that we have moving in right now, it is bringing some very light snow showers, nowhere near what we saw this weekend, but enough to where you may want to hold off. Theyre still working to get out of that. Lets zoom in and show you whats going on as far as snow estimates. Look at this. Less than an inch yesterday, marking potentially 5 to 7 inches for some higher peaks. This is kind of whats left of that incoming system. Not as cold as the last one. Lets take a look at how the Sierra Snowpack fared, because definitely one of those numbers that gives us a giant boost heading into april when it really matters. By region, the north, over 100 . Central also over 100 . The snowpack president of the United States onethird of californias water supply. As of today, the statewide average is officially at 104 . Now, during april, once those temperatures start to warm up, what happens is all of that snow begins to melt, it melts into the groundwater, hopefully helping replenish that. But, also, a lot of our reserves and reservoirs and rivers, and well see how the Sierra Snowpack fares once april comes around. Lets get a check of those gas prices. The station i pass every morning has gone up 40 cents in the last week. Ive seen the prices rise. Were no longer on the ten best for the state. Well start in Contra Costa County with their low in concord, 4. 09 per gallon at world on monument boulevard. Heading down to the south bay, the next price here, sunnyvales best is great gas at 4. 07 on north matilda avenue. Well head north, just barely under 4, vallejos best is 3. 96 at royal gas on tennessee street. Thanks for sharing those changes on gasbuddy. Com. On the roadways, were looking at a smooth drive. We have the start of commute over here on the right side, altamont pass. The restrictions, so oneway Traffic Control continues for highway 84 through niles. Lets look toward the Golden Gate Bridge. A smooth drive. The crew just cleared from in front of our camera. Youll see flashing lights on the marin side. Back to you. Thanks, mike. A long awaited feature is on instagram. Trending this morning, a very important muppet is Getting National attention for his recent take on the economy. It even got the attention of the white house. Were talking about cookie monster, who says that he has had it with the socalled shrinkflation. Thats when theyre cutting back on the products side without lowering the price. He tweeted out, and we quote, me hate shrinkflation. Me cookies are getting smaller. Guess me going to have to eat double the cookies. You sounded jamaican there. Might be some of my roots. That posting even got President Bidens attention. The white house weighing in and tweeting, c is not just for cookies, it is also for consumers getting ripped off, adding President Biden is calling on companies to put a stop to shrinkflation. In this case, i guess thats the way the cookie crumbles. Cookie monster. Hes not wrong. Stuff is expensive. Grocery store shopping is not fun for me anymore. Im, like, what is this . Even though we had that system that was trekking to the north, it looks like its going to stay up there. I do want to show you this beautiful shot of lake tahoe because the trees are stunning. Its about 32 degrees and some spots are dealing with a wintery mix. 48 degrees right now in san jose. This is a live look in downtown. Things are calm, wind speeds are calm. As far as the San Francisco area goes, its about 51 degrees. So were not too cold to start on this tuesday. That system thats moving in isnt necessarily a cold system, but it is enough to where if you live north of the Golden Gate Bridge, you might catch a spotty shower. This is where it is right now. Where you see the blue, thats snow. If i take you through the outlook, this is through tuesday and it stays pretty much far north. We do still have the possibility of scattered activity throughout the afternoon. When we finally will get to see some of that rain, it will start to move in on wednesday. So even though today the majority of the rain is going to stay to our north, by tomorrow we could see some. This looks impressive, but the rainfall totals are looking less than half an inch for most of us. It will be a quickmoving system and thursday and friday things will dry out quite nicely before our next rain chance moves in heading into saturday, which looks like a weaker system. Its good for us because well get to enjoy sunday on a clear note. Hourbyhour forecast, around your afternoon hour, 62 degrees in san jose, 59 in livermore, and then by 3 00, daytime highs today will be comfortable in the midand upper 60s by the end of the week. Ill show you the sevenday forecast in a second. We will see temperatures continue in the 50s. Here is your sevenday outlook. On friday, 67 degrees. Now, today for voting weve got fantastic weather. For tomorrow theres more of an instability factor that moves in that could trigger the chance of isolated thunderstorms. By the time we get to thursday and friday for inland and also for San Francisco, were going to see temperatures bump up comfortably into the 60s by the time we get to friday. How are the roads . Theyre looking just fine, very calm, easy drive. Oakland, northbound with the taillights, headlights heading southbound, the nimitz past the coliseum is at speed. Thats pretty much the case around the Contra Costa County and Alameda County. This block right here for the east bay, eastbound 24 does slow heading toward the warren freeway. I see them change and ive never found a reason why. Crews are clearing. Vasco road is the key number out of Contra Costa County, down to 580 and Alameda County, your commute out of brentwood and discovery bay, were looking at 18 minutes, pretty much the minimum we see in the morning. In the south bay, no slowing in the north bay direction. The crews should have cleared northbound 17 coming up from the overnight road work and the lane shift that happened around vine hill. Back to you. Major Sports Events are heading to the bay area and it is already causing a lot of excitement. Next, were going to speak to the hosting committee on plans now in place to make sure that all these events run so smooth. First the allstar game, less than a year from now, in early 2026 it will be super bowl lx at levis, followed soon after by the world cup. The Host Committee will be preparing for fans. Members include sports legends like steve young, as well as Brandi Chastain and former giant hunter pence, as well as former warriors player, and the groups ceo really wants people of the bay area to feel like these Upcoming Events are really for them. Im spending half my time on all of the operations, all of the tactical work that needs to be done, and about half my time to ensure that bay area residents feel like these are their events. Here is a look at everyone on that committee. Some cities create committees for a specific event, but this one is meant to be remain impactful for Sports Events going forward. Were so lucky. We get so many great things. A lot of great things coming up. Coming up next, weve got continuing coverage on super tuesday, including the race to replace congresswoman anna eshoo. Why its becoming one of the most expensive races within the state. Im Ginger Conejero saab in San Francisco. Today california voters will only find one state proposition on the ballot. Ahead, we break down prop 1 and the final push from both sides of the measure. Plus, spotty rain chances linger across the bay area. Here is a live look outside. Meteorologist vianey arana is tracking your forecast as you start your day. This is today in the bay. Happy super tuesday to you. Im marcus washington. And im laura garcia. A lot to cover there. First, lets start with the forecast. Vianey is in for kari this morning. What are we looking like . Its spotty and thats how its going to remain. But mostly for the north bay. So not everyone is going to see the rain. Most of us will get cloud cover out of this system. The reason for that is because a lot of that is staying off the coast and pushing further north. The track isnt really going to be impactful for us. Lets take a look at your day planner for dublin. Notice cloud cover in site. If we get any spotty chances, it will be so minimal you probably wont even notice. Tomorrow we get a better chance. Heading into the 12 00 hour, we see temperatures in the 50s. Its going to be a nice day with cloud cover. After all that rain, this is cool. The bay bridge looks perfect right now. The metering lights are not really causing an issue getting out of oakland. Were showing a smooth drive through the maze. Arrows show you where we would expect to see brake taps and weve seen a little sensor change in the last five minutes. Highway 24, it was eastbound where there was an issue of slowing. Nothing on the grid for chp or caltrans. Were looking at green sensors throughout the south bay, and anywhere except the altamont pass. Back to you. Thanks, mike. To our super tuesday coverage and the allimportant california primary. The polls open in about 90 minutes. Today in the bays bob redell is live for us in san jose at the Santa Clara County registrars office. Talk to us about the voter turnout. How is it looking . Reporter not great. Good morning to you, marcus and kris. Were here at Santa Clara County Registrar Voter Office where in about 30 minutes workers will be back to start counting the ballots that have been coming in for the past several days. Weve got evelyn menendez. How is turnout looking so far . Right now were at 15 , were expecting 35 to 45 , which is pretty low for a primary. You were wincing when i asked you earlier what its like. Its normally 30 , 40 , and we want that so we can see higher numbers at the end of the day. Do you have a sense of why its lower this time around compared to years past . Weve been talking to voters and theyre saying theyre waiting until the last minute, they want all the information, theyre reading through their guides. But the last minute is today. It doesnt seem like theres many issues on the ballot that are highly unusual compared to years past. Its always people waiting to make up their mind. No sense of why its lower . No idea. So you have 104 Voting Centers throughout the county, theres a number of drop boxes, you can obviously come here, you can have your ballot postmarked by today. Yes. Is there anything were missing as far as how to get your ballot in . You can go to over 100 ballot drop boxes around the county, 104 vote centers in person. If you drop your ballot off in the mailbox, we want to make sure people know to check when the pickup is at that post office. Because it will not count if you drop it by 8 00 today in the mailbox. So drop it in an official drop box or at one of our vote centers. If you dropped it off at 3 00 and the pickup is at 1 00, its not going to be postmarked until march 6th, which is going to be too late and it wont be counted. Correct. What message do you have to people who are new voters or dont normally vote or maybe are too lazy to vote . Everybody should vote, but we want to make sure voters remember to sign their ballot, the envelope, we do have a lot of voters that will get the ballot and its unsigned. We give them a fans to fix it. They can come in a number of opportunities to check and say, yes, i did sign that. Just so its not a little bit of a delay. They can always check the status at wheres my ballot. I know you can sign up for texts. Im in Alameda County and i get texts every time theres an election saying, hey, we received your ballot, your ballot has been processed. Thats across the state, yeah. Thank you very much. Happy election day. How late will people be here today counting ballots . Oh, counting them, probably until about 8 00 or 9 00 no, later. Its going to be a long day . Yeah, a long day. Reporter reporting live here at the santa clara registrar Voters Office in san jose, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you, bob. You can tell shes got things to do today. It will be a busy day. Election coverage continues in San Francisco. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab joins us live in the city this morning. Certainly there is a lot at stake with some of the ballot measures here, ginger. Reporter that is right, laura. Good morning to you. And that is why up to the last hours leading up to today, some of the biggest names in the state were here in the city making a final push. Governor gavin newsom joined San Francisco mayor london breed, the Lieutenant Governor and District Attorney in advocating for a yes on proposition 1. If approved, prop 1 would authorize the use of over 6 billion in bonds to build Mental Health treatment facilities. It would also build permanent and Supportive Housing for the homeless and help homeless veterans. We need to stabilize people, we need to deal with the underlying reasons theyre on the streets and sidewalks in the first place, the reason theyre selfmedicating with drug or alcohol addictions. Reporter opponents say california doesnt have the money, especially with a looming multibillion deficit. They also point out the state has a poor track record of taking bonds approved by voters and spending them on things they arent supposed to be spent on. Some other ballot measures include proposition b, which would set a level of officers in San Francisco, and increase the officers to a mandatory minimum of 2,000 officers in five years. Opponents say the city cannot afford having additional officers, and it might mean that a tax hike will need to be voted on in the future to fund it. Another measure concerning sfpd is on the ballot, proposition e, which would change some of the rules for policing. Supporters say it would remove the red tape and paperwork for officers, allowing for more time patrolling the streets and less time writing reports. It also have wider use for technology for investigations and pursuits. Opponents say it is over the top and sweeping and they can achieve some of the goals with existing tools. Now, you do have until 8 00 to fill out your ballot and drop it off at a Voting Center or drop it off at a mailbox. These are ready to be used any time during the day, so if youre waking up early, go through and do that if you havent done so already. Its on my list of things to do. I usually get it done earlier. Im going to do it today. Thank you very much, ginger. 11 candidates will be vying to replace outgoing south bay and peninsula congresswoman anna eshoo, who is retiring. The campaign spending, the 16th district congressional seat, more than 8 million has been spent. The top four spenders include peter dixon, sam liccardo, evan lowe and joe smid yen. Our election coverage continues online. The qr code will take you to your app store and youll be able to download our free nbc bay area app. It is free and useful for all election updates. To a live look at interstate 80 up in the sierra, after days of closures, traffic, slowly moving again. Caltrans reopened the highway yesterday morning, but only one lane is open, and chain controls are in effect. The chp says drivers have to be patient. Crews are still working to clear snow as the weekend blizzard left nearly 11 feet of snow. Some people are taking a cautious approach. Just been taking it slow, going 25, 30 miles an hour. Chp officers reminding drivers to pull off the road to get those chains on. In the bay, meteorologist vianey arana is tracking what we can expect. Definitely a lot calmer when it comes to that weather system that moved in over the weekend. This is what were seeing right now. Not really snowing over south lake tahoe, but to the north in some of those higher peaks were still seeing a wintery mix coming down. Now, it isnt as cold of a storm, so not expecting as high of accumulations. Right now were talking about less than 2 inches for most of the peaks as far as your outlook goes. And how much snow did we get . Just in case you missed it, here is a quick breakdown of the sevenday snowfall total. Sugar bowl, 127 inches, palisades, 93 inches, soda springs 89 inches, and the snow lab over 77 inches. Definitely packing a punch. A quick reminder, this is where we started on january 1st, we were at about 28 for our snowpack and this is where were at now, 104 . So were looking good as far as the snowpack goes. Weve caught up quite nicely for the North Central and down through the south as well. The numbers are looking good. Well see how this plays out when temperatures warm up and it really starts to count and matter. A closer look at your longrange outlook later. Lets check in with mike. Over here, this is 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge, traffic flows smoothly. If you take the golden gate ferry, one of the angel island ferry lines, go to goldengate. Org because that line is going to be affected by mechanic al issues. If you take the ferry at all, check their website. Over here wer looking at a smooth drive, a build for highway 37, the bay bridge the metering lights are activated. Highway 4 shows more slowing than a few minutes ago. A smooth flow of traffic in the south bay, right on schedule for san jose, north 101 does show a bit of slowing heading north from 680 to oakland road. We are celebrating womens history month. Coming up, two icons soon to be inducted into a National Womens hall of fame. Well continue our super tuesday coverage, this time on the national level. Its not the same streaming a movie in your house as coming to something at cinequest. It has many more layers with the artists and other folks gathering together and sharing. And action. The popular cinequest Film Festival is red t what do i see in peter dixon . I see my husband. The father of our girls. I see a public servant. A man who served under secretary clinton in the state department. Where he took on the epidemic of violence against women in the congo. I see a fighter, a tenacious problemsolver. Who will go to congress and protect abortion rights and our democracy. Because he sees a Better Future for all of us. Im peter dixon and i approved this message. Gilroy, good morning. It is 5 43 right now. Around 8 00 a. M. , well still be in the 40s. Around your lunch hour, were talking upper 50s. Maxing out in the low 60s. Were going to get a mix of overcast skies and eventually peeks of sunshine. We could see a spotty chance or two heading into the early afternoon. The bottom right corner there, you see the truck behind where it says nbc bay area. The truck will be moving in just a few minutes, traveling north to move that Center Divide for the morning commute, which is starting to kick in. Ill show you the bay bridge coming up. Today is super tuesday, voters in california and 15 other states and one territory headed to the polls. Scott mcgrew has certainly been following this. A lot of people assume the incoming president will certainly win, but the big question is dealing with the race, nikki haley, how will she perform . This is how this is going to work. Democrats vote today on who they want to nominate for president , joe biden facing no serious competition there. Republicans will do the same. As marcus mentioned, their top two choices so far have been donald trump and nikki haley. Trump has 273 delegates after his past wins, haley 43. Whoever wins, you need about 1,200 to win, and faces presumably biden in the general election in november. Haley says if thats trump, hell lose again to joe biden. She says pick her instead. Dont take my word for it. Look at the polls. In any one of the polls that are out there, he squeaks by. In all of those same polls, i defeat joe biden by up to 18 points. Do you know what that means . Its bigger than the presidency. Thats house, thats senate, thats governorships, school boards, really getting our country back on track. Some video coming into our newsroom from virginia as those polls open ahead of ours. This is not the most glamorous thing youre going to see today, but this is democracy in action. Each and every persons vote counts. Donald trumps name will be on the ballot in colorado and maine today, after the u. S. Supreme court ruled in trumps favor, said those states do not have the power to remove his name under the 14th amendment, which bars insurrectionists from office. The high court had no opinion on whether trump incited an insurrection. It only said congress can apply the rule. Trump looking ahead to the next case where hes asking the Supreme Court to rule president s are above the law. If a president doesnt have full immunity, you really dont have a president.
