"the uss carney" war smip shot down two attack drones headed for it today and it assisted three other commercial vessels that came under attack. iranian-backed rebels in yemen have been trying to prevent israeli ships and nations who wanted to support israel from traveling through the red sea. we have two reports tonight beginning with aaron gilchrist. u.s. defense officials confirming to nbc news the "uss carney" responded after four attacks after three civilian ships off yemen. the carney shot down a drone headed toward it. the u.s. not sure if the carney itself was a target. one of the drones hitting a merchant ship. the u.s. destroyer shot down another drone. two other civilian ships report they were hit and the carney shot down a third drone. late sunday iran-backed houthis posting a video claiming responsibility for the attacks. houthi rebels took control of much of yemen in 2014 and were considered a terrorist organization by the u.s. government not 2021. the houthis calling it a show of support for the palestinians in gaza part of a series incident in the region. this video with faces blurred showed a helicopter landing on an israeli cargo ship. armed soldiers quickly taking control and taking the ship to yemen. it is part of the gerald r. ford strike group sent to the mediterranean sea after the hamas attack in israel. the carney alone responsible for shooting down houthi drones three times in the last six weeks. >> it's a provocation. we'll see some reaction, but i think secretary austin will try to keep it below the threshold of causing wider, wider war. >> u.s. forces have also been facing threats on land, bases in iraq and syria have come under attack by militia groups supported by iran approximately 75 times in the last two months injuring dozens. >> aaron joining us now from the white house. aaron, with those attacks on u.s. forces in iraq we're getting late word tonight of a u.s. military strike?
