Were also seeing a small batch here. That could produce a shower in san jose over the next 15 to 30 minutes. Watch out for a few slick spots tonight, and then well move it over the sierra. And look at this. Snow coming down with the top of thirds of 1 to 3 inches. Okay. So we got a little bit of rain. We got the clouds right now. And then as we head throughbers. 10 00 p. The governors effort is part of efforts to push for climate cooperation in china. Its drawing attention amid years of heightened tensions between the u. S. And china. The United States and china together represent over 40 of global emissions. And i wanted to express not just my desire to collaborate, but i wanted to substantively work to advance that effort. And we did so last few days. This isnt the first time a california governor has travelled to china for a trip of this nature. President biden welcomed australian Prime MinisterAnthony Albanese to the white house today. The leaders talked about their work toward shared goals in climate change, technology, and national security. The president described australia as an anchor to peace and prosperity, especially now as chinas influence in the pacific grows. The alliance between australia and the United States has never been more important than it is today. And we have never been more committed than we have today. Australians and americans share a rich history, but we always have our eye on the future. Were united by a determination to overcome the challenges that we face, and we share an ambition to seize those opportunities which lay ahead of us. Tonight, both leaders and their partners will attend a dinner with Vice PresidentKamala Harris and second gentleman doug emhoff. A new speaker tonight. They can finally get back to the business that has been on hold for more than three weeks. Mike johnson of louisiana is the first from that state to serve in that role. He is known as a staunch social conservative. Johnson won support from all republicans to clinch the speakers gavel. Nbcs alice barr has the latest from capitol hill. Dually elected speaker of the house of representatives. Reporter a break in the logjam at last as House Republicans finally unite to elect a new speaker, mike johnson of louisiana. The challenge before us is great, but time for action is now. And i will not let you down. Reporter the decision that fell entirely along party lines means the house can move ahead with urgent business after three weeks of speakerless paralysis, known as a staunch conservative, speaker johnson was elected to congress in 2016 and was previously fifth ranked in house gop leadership. Having never chaired a full committee, he is the least experienced speaker in modern history, but is well liked among his republican colleagues. He has united all of our members to speak clearly and boldly on behalf of the american people. A friend to all and an enemy to none. Reporter personal animus helped topple Kevin Mccarthy from the speakers job and torpedoed the runs of the past three mom knees. Former president trumps influence a major factor. He came out strongly for johnson. Hes smart. He is sharp. He is going to be fantastic. Reporter but democrats who all voted for minority leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized johnson as an architect of mr. Trumps legal efforts to overturn the 2020 election. House democrats believe that when members of this body voted to reject the results of the 2020 election, they forfeited their ability to lead this chamber. Reporter speaker johnson now faces the true work of governing with pressing issues on the line, funding for israel and for ukraine. He has opposed the latter, and a race to prevent a Government Shutdown next month. Speaker johnson talks a lot about restoring the american Publics Trust in congress, promising to stand for integrity, and being a good steward of taxpayer dollars. And he sent a message to enemies of freedom around the world saying the peoples house is back in business. From capitol hill, alice barr, nbc news. Still ahead in the 5 00 news, being in a hospital to get a shot is never fun. So stanford Childrens Hospital is trying to make things a little bit easier for kids. How video games are part of the equation. And not wasting water. The unique way one company is making beer thanks to leftover water from an apartment building. And we are tracking some wind for the weekend. This is an early look at saturday morning with that wind building in the north bay mountains. Ill have a full look at stanford is helping children fight their fear of needles by using a video game. Its called pinata, and the stanford Childrens Program helped create it. Its focus is on making doctors visits more fun for children. Pinata lets kids design their own pinata, pop it and get rewards. Doctors say it helps distract kids from the pain and anxiety of actually getting a shot. You want to establish a very positive experience in the hospital around vaccinations so we dont have kids developing vaccine fear that follows them throughout their life, even into adulthood. Doctors say that working with calmer kids makes the job a little easier as well. There is no shortage of variety when it comes to beer. But one local company may have found a truly unique hook. Their beer is made using recycled shower water. And while its not available for sell just yet, the goal was a more sustainable product that also makes you want to raise your glass. Here is nbc bay areas marianne favro. Reporter epic onewater brew has a secret ingredient you likely wouldnt expect. The water going into these cans is recycled from showers, sink, and washing machines from inside this luxury San Francisco highrise apartment building. The brew is the brainchild of epic clean tech, a local Water Technology company. We kind of live in this flush and forget society. We dont think about what happens after we flush our toilets and water magically appears. Well wanted to showcase the potential of water reuse, and we decided to highlight the unbelievable potential of recycled water by putting into it a beer. Reporter the San Francisco company partnered with Devils CanyonBrewing Company in san carlos to brew the kolsch of ale. Kind of a yuck factor. Reporter but then the Brewing Company tested the recycled water and was pleasantly surprised. It turned out that the water is cleaner than what we get from our reservoirs. Were using these advanced treatment processes the same used by the astronauts where we are treating the water with multiple steps using biological treatment. Were actually using nature to clean the water. And then we put it through membranes. Reporter the company just received accolades from Time Magazine where the brew was named one of the best inventions of the year. And here is the result. A beer that looks just like a traditional kolsch style ale. Of course, the big question we all want to know is what does a beer made from San Francisco shower water taste like . Well, i decided to find out. Its good. Kind of crisp. Heres to you. In san carlos, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Well, it must be good, because marianne has two cans in front of her. Apparently she is having two beers on the job. I love how matter of fact she is about it. Lets do this as a science experiment. She is a reporter. She is doing it for reporting purposes. Nice job. Okay. How about report on the weather, jeff . A lot of sun earlier to start today. And then we did see that cloud cover rolling on in. And even a few spotty showers out there. I do want to take it outside of that live Sky Camera Network in san jose. If youve been stuck in the office all day or at home doing chores inside, this is our window outside here across downtown san jose. And again, those clouds are moving it in, making it feel of course like fall and october outside. Currently 65 degrees. Were going stay in the 60s here as we head through the next couple of hours with the clouds staying put. Now the system that brought us these changes today is still just off to the north. Now it did bring quite a bit of rainfall up towards seattle and portland, over an inch in some spots. Its just been falling apart and smoothing off towards the south. So we have seen a few spotty showers over the north bay. Not a whole lot left for us. Look at the sierra. Snow happening right now, about 1 to 3 inches. If youre going there tonight, be ready for the winter conditions. Closer view of the radar, land is the cloud cover. A little bit of spotty shower over the bay and a small shower for san jose. I think as we head through tonight, we keep the chance here of a spotty shower. Even into about 11 00 tonight, a slight chance. We could see a popup shower, and then as we head through tomorrow morning, well start to get into some clearing here across the bay area, with a little bit of patchy fog that could form from san jose right on down to gilroy. The other thing with the system moving across california are the colder temperatures. Look at these numbers across the bay area. It hasnt been this cold to start since last april. Over 150 days ago. So make sure to have that heavier bay area jacket on, if you know what i mean. Youre going to need it for tomorrow morning. 48 for the south bay. 44 in the trivalley. North bay dipping down to 41. And right here for the east bay, were at 45. Then as we head through the day tomorrow, were staying about the same. Down here across the south bay, temperatures are going to be in the upper 60s for a lot of spots. 69 in san jose. And really not too many differences across the microclimates. More of those upper 60s for the east bay. 67 in martinez. And 68 in pleasanton. For the peninsula, 67 in redwood city, and were going stay with some mid 60s in downtown San Francisco. Right here across the north bay, 68 in sonoma. So dry as we head through tomorrow. Well get plenty of sunshine moving back in again tomorrow. So nice cool, crisp day outside. But then by this weekend, i still think were going hang on to some cold air. Were going see another system drop down across the west. And the way this area of low pressure and High Pressure is setting up, its going to Conveyor Belt in. Not only the cold air, but also unfortunately some wind. And this is going to be a dry system. We might actually get some fire weather watches and wind watches issued this weekend. Youll see it here. Saturday morning, 7 30, we get some wind in the mountains around that. But 20 to about 35 miles per hour. Saturday afternoon, 15 to about 30 for lower elevations. Some of the mountains in the north bay could get up to about 40 miles per hour. And wed hang on the a little bit of wind as we head into sunday morning. On that sevenday forecast, i do see staying with these 60s here in San Francisco the next several days. And across the inland valleys, were staying with upper 60s and low 70s. So again, the big thing to watch now is going to be the chance of when this weekend might get into a fire weather watch. Keep an eye out. Thanks, jeff. Sure. Coming up, americans continue to rely more and more on paying for things with their credit card. Astonishing amount they paid in the last year just in fees and interest. The u. S. Energy secretary is in town to announce a new program to help nonprofit organizations become more energy efficient. Its a program that brings with it 50 million. President bidens new infrastructure law designated money that will help nonprofits convert to greener operations. Secretary Jennifer Granholm stopped by marthas kitchen in san jose. That nonprofit helps people suffering from food insecurity. And its just one of dozens of nonprofits across the country benefits from the program. We want them to be able to put more of their money into Service Rather than into heating the neighborhood because theyre in an inefficient building. The Biden Administration has a goal of 100 Clean Electricity by 2035 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050. They are going up, the amount americans are paying in credit card fees and Interest Rates is rising. New report by the Consumer FinancialProtection Bureau found americans paid 130 billion last year, the highest amount ever measured. Card holders were charged more than 105 billion in interest, and 25 billion in fees. Late payment charges made up the most significant fees. Some analysts say its not a surprise. The Federal Reserve has implemented four Interest Rate hikes this year, and more rate hikes are possible. So that number could go up. Still ahead, scary moments at a houston airport after two planes c an unexpected takeoff left travelers grounded in texas. It happened at Hobby Airport in houston. The faa says a private jet took off without permission on tuesday. It clipped the wing of another private jet that was landing. That left a lot of debris on the runway. The airport shut down for three hours to clean up the airfield which delayed lots of other flights. The National Transportation safety board is sending a sixperson team to investigate that collision.
