Area pilot now facing attempted murder charges, and his Upcoming Court appearance. Two more hostages released in gaza, and israel now being asked to hold off on its Ground Invasion. New developments overnight from washington, including the growing roadblocks in getting gaza muchneeded supplies. And a plea for help as thieves stop one National Touring show in its tracks. The stay in San Francisco that suddenly went sideways and the clues that may help crack the case. This is today in the bay. Its tuesday morning. Thanks so much for starting your day with us. Im laura garcia. Im marcus washington. Well get to the headlines in just a moment. Weve got to start out with the forecast. Meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. The rain is gone for now . The rain is gone for a little while and were heading for cooler temperatures. As we get a look at our visibility, thats the main issue, especially for the north bay, where we are seeing dense fog developing, especially around novato where visibility is down to about a quarter of a mile. So make sure youre allowing extra time to get to work this morning. As we take a look at santa rosa, it is 50 degrees and foggy there, as we are seeing, once again, the low visibility, starting out with cool temperatures. Were in the low 50s now, but its going to clear up and shape up to be a really nice day. A little warmer in some spots compared to yesterday afternoon. Well talk about a cooldown coming our way in just a few minutes. Mike, youve had a couple of hazards reported. Were looking at a pretty smooth drive right now. Fog, of course, thats not the hazard were talking about. A disabled vehicle on the lower vehicle between san rafael and richmond. We have a disabled vehicle in the far right lane. Two lanes are open. This, for allegedly trying to turn off the engines of a San Franciscobound plane midflight. Today in the bays kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom with more on what we know about this and why this all happened. Reporter we were told that the suspect had some sort of mental breakdown, but what hes accused of doing is something that should only happen in a total emergency. This all happened on a horizon air flight to San Francisco from everett, washington. This is the man on your screen, 44yearold Joseph Emerson of pleasant hill. He is a pilot, he was off duty. He was sitting in the extra seat in the cockpit. Now, outside the cockpit passengers said that the plane started going down fast all of a sudden, making several sharp turns, and then they heard an announcement over the speakers about an Emergency Landing. Inside the cockpit, were told that emerson tried to turn off the planes engine using what our nbc news aviation analyst says is used only in a fire or other emergency. They have what they call fire handles thandles on the roof of the cockpit, that you grab, you turn, and you shut down, and that shuts the fuel off, as well as turning the engine off, so its used for an emergency situation, if you have an engine fire or something along those lines. Its a very quick way of shutting down the engines. This jump seat rider may have tried to use those emergency thandles to do it. Reporter emerson was subdued by horizon air crew members and escorted to the back of the plane. Upon landing, emerson was taken into custody. The faa is investigating, but the fbi says what happened does not appear to be tied to any current world events. It is worth noting, pilots over the age of 40 have to undergo medical evaluations every six months, and they have to disclose any Mental Health issues that theyre having or any medications that theyre taking. However, full mental evaluations are not part of that physical. Emersons last physical was just last month. Interesting. Thanks, kris. Reporter the white house says ten americans are unaccounted for. Officials are working around the clock to locate them. Supporting israel, the defense of its people, helping secure the release of hostages held by hamas, addressing the humanitarian crisis in gaza. Reporter the u. S. Is urging israel to delay its Ground Invasion to allow for more time for hostage talks and humanitarian aid. The situation growing even more dire each day. Sadly, the longer this war goes, the deeper the humanitarian needs are going to be, and we will need more funding, for sure. Reporter today the u. N. But former president obama published a long and balanced assessment of the israeli hamas situation online, acknowledging israels right to exist and defend itself and the need to protect civilians, men, women, children, warning israel cutting off badlyneeded supplies just makes innocent people angry, writing it could further harden palestinian attitudes for generations, erode Global Support for israel, play into the hands of israels enemies, and undermine longterm efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. Hamas has released two more hostages, brie jackson will have a lot more about that at the top of the hour. Other big story is the story we just keep on telling, the republicans looking for a new leader in the house. There are nine people interested in the job, eight will run. Nothing can be accomplished at the capitol, no new bills, no new money for israel, nothing, until republicans agree with each other about somebody. Now, the leading candidate in the latest crop is minnesotas tom emmer, the third most powerful republican in the house. Fairly mainstream, but he voted for certifying the 2020 president ial election, and thats a sin in the eyes of maga. Here is a closer look. The various candidates for speaker, republicans will take a secret vote behind doors today to nominate their pick, at least theoretically they will ban behind the guy who they pick in a show of loyalty, except that didnt happen last two times, actually. Not when they nominated steve scalise, even the runnerup jim jordan wouldnt support him. Then jordan ran and many did not support jordan. Former President Trump has endorsed jordan. That didnt work out. Now he says hes not going to endorse anybody, hes staying above it. We know from past statements hes not a fan of emmer. Trump has a big day, too. His former attorney, michael cohen, expected to testify against him in new york city. Thats where trump is accused of fraud, deflating the value inflating the value of his real estate holdings. Cohen has testified under oath in congress that trump did that. On monday, democratic senator bob menendez pleaded not guilty to charges of bribery and accusations hes a spy for the egyptian government. His wife pleaded not guilty last week. The faithful this morning may be excused for losing a little faith in the 49ers after two tough losses in a row. Last night in minnesota Christian Mccaffrey took one down the sideline to close the gap to five in the third quarter. But the vikings had enough left to close the door, intercepting brock purdy twice in the fourth quarter. They won it 2217. Afterwards, purdy tried to explain what went wrong on that first pickoff. It was a bad ball. J. J. Did a good job on his route and dline got a good push on us and i sort of was trying to anticipate the throw. At the end of the day, it was a bad ball, and obviously i threw it too far ahead of him. He sounds down, too. So its two straight losses after the team won the first five games. The niners dont have time to dwell on the negative. Five days from now they will host cincinnati at levis. Youve got to love them when theyre down, too. Exactly, thats right. No jumping on the bandwagon just when its good. Lets get a look at the forecast today. How is it looking . It looks really nice today and starts out cool but warms up. Well have sunshine into the afternoon. It does look mostly cloudy right now as we get a look at this live view in oakland. Theres already a lot of people out the door. Driving around the north bay, you do need to be careful, allow some extra time to get to work because visibility in some spots is down to a quarter mile or less. We will have that dense fog advisory in effect until 10 00. For antioch, it is mostly cloudy but no issues with visibility, and temperatures in the low 50s. Its going to be a cool morning through about 8 00 and then we do start to see the sky clearing and temperatures warming up, as we head for the mid to upper 70s for today, reaching 79 in East San Jose and san jose downtown reaching 78 degrees, 80 in morgan hill. There wont be too many 80s on the map. Most of us will be in the mid to upper 70s, with hayward headed for 73 degrees, low 70s for redwood city and in San Francisco 71 downtown. For the north bay, up to 75 in napa and 77 in sonoma. We will have more changes ahead as we are starting to see some rain and a cold front moving into the pacific northwest, all being drawn in by an area of low pressure off the coast. So it will be partly cloudy today and then we will start to see the chance of showers in the forecast for tomorrow, as a very strong cold front moves through. It looks like for areas around ukiah, clear lake, parts of lake and mendocino counts, thats where we will have the best chance of rain. Most of us will be staying dry and well see the return of clouds on friday, as, yet again, another cold front moves through. Take a look at san jose. Today will be the warmest day well see in quite a while. In fact, our highs will be in the 60s and 70s through the weekend. But its our morning temperatures that youll really notice that its going to feel like fall, crisp, cool air, as we drop into the mid40s through the weekend. Mike, you found one cause of concords slowing. One cause, one crash. No major injuries and now off to the shoulder, so theres a little recovery as the build is on. Remember, the continued build on westbound highway 4, take the corner instead of cutting the corner. Right now 242 is slow because of that crash on the shoulder. A smooth drive, but the backup builds at the bay bridge. The metering lights are moving faster. Back to you. Happening now, the cdc is sounding the alarm over the limited supply of a new drug aimed at preventing rsv in babies. The vaccine delivers rsv antibodies directly through the injection. The cdc says the highest dosage is in limited supply. Its telling doctors to only deliver it to babies with the highest risk of contracting severe rsv, that includes infants younger than 6 months and those with underlying conditions. Doctors recommend adults talk to children openly about their fears and share the steps, as we, adults, are trying to make this a better earth.
