The reason is because of this activity, a hazard, a disabled vehicle just before the Treasure Island tunnel. Typical bid for the richmond in west 80 and 37, highway 4 building into concord, but nothing dramatic. Theres maybe two crashes, one toward lafayette and one out of orinda. No major injuries. We are looking at a slower drive down the peninsula. The southbound getting over the first burst of traffic, the first slowing through san jose. Well see more in about 40 minutes. Is increasing its military presence in the middle east, that includes adding a new boost for air defense systems. Retired u. S. General Barry Mccaffrey explains additional American Forces underscore how important this conflict is to the United States and the white houses effort to maintain peace elsewhere. I think the primary focus right now of the Biden Administration, secretary of state tony blinken, and also the secretary of defense, lloyd austin, is to prevent widening of the war. Its right on the cusp of a disaster. Passions are high. Israel says its stepping up its air strikes in order to reduce the risk to its troops in the next stage of the conflict. The ground phase many believe could launch any time now. And at the same time right now, renewed efforts this morning to free more hostages in gaza. This is following fridays release of two americans who spent nearly two weeks in captivity. Secretary of state blinken is expressing new hope that this can kickstart the release of more hostages. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab joins us live in San Francisco this morning. Are we learning more about why those americans were released . Reporter not all that much more at this point, marcus and laura. Secretary blinken says he simply doesnt know why the hostages were released at this point. He does say it is gratifying to see judith and Natalie Raanan released after weeks of working on the release of hostages. He said they sounded strong of spirit and strong of mind when he spoke to them. They are the extended family of former nbc bureau chief martin fletcher. Will fletcher will be speaking on the today show later this morning about the release of his family members. Secretary blinken says he is hopeful this will be the beginning of the release of more hostages, but at the same time, actions and not words are what speak, particularly when it comes to hamas. We dont know why hamas chose to release natalie and judith first. I use the word first advisedly, because were hopeful that more follow. I cant speak to that. What i can speak to is our incessant efforts from day one to try to get people home, to try to get them out of gaza, back with their families and loved ones. [ crowd chanting ] reporter and those are the chants to bring them back home here in the bay area. Calls for hostages to be released are continuing. The situation in the middle east seemingly intensifying by the moment. Today in the bays jay gray is live on the ground in tel aviv. There are still fears of this conflict widening, even as this new aid is arriving in gaza. What are you seeing . Reporter yeah, youre absolutely right, laura and marcus. Good morning. Weve seen a steppedup pace as far as the air strikes are concerned. 320 military targets hit overnight, according to Israeli Defense forces. They say they are taking out tunnels, as well as Operational Command centers, clearing an area for what would be a ground assault. Weve talked about that for days. They seem to be focused on moving tanks across the border and into gaza. Weve seen the equipment repositioned and some of the troops repositioned as well. Throughout the day today, we have heard in the skies over tel aviv choppers moving in. Weve seen them going to the south. Weve heard jets and drones. Its a very active time right now. On the other end of the strip, weve seen some of the aid moving in, 17 trucks yesterday, 20 again today. Theyre carrying water, food, muchneeded medicine and medical supplies. But no fuel. Israel has made it clear theyre not going to allow fuel into gaza during this war. Theyre inspecting every truck that moves through that border with egypt. What that means on the ground, according to the u. N. , is that the operating hospitals that are left could run out of fuel in the next couple of days. They are desperately low on fuel. And that would really, in essence, crater the medical support on the ground. They would have no way to work. As we talked about, some of the doctors in these hospitals are doing surgeries by the light of their cell phones. So they are really struggling, and in dire straits there. The u. N. Says as far as the other aid is concerned, with the trucks moving in, thats about 4 of the supplies that they would normally see every day before the war. So, again, its an area that really needs a lot of help, and right now it just doesnt appear that its going to happen. Its just not enough. Thank you for all those details. Stay safe. 6 38 this morning. The ceo and cofounder of the annual tech conference web summit is resigning.
