Wow, i knew he was in trouble but i didnt know they were seeking the death penalty. [ laughter ] during the opening of yesterdays trial, former President Trumps lawyer claimed that trumps Maralago Club would sell for at least 1 billion oh, im sure he could get that just for whats in the shower. [ laughter ] after florida congressman matt gaetz filed a resolution that would remove Kevin Mccarthy from the speakership, mccarthy tweeted, bring it on, and gaetz replied, quote, just did. You know, a lot of people think joe biden is too old to govern, but it sounds like these guys arent old enough. [ laughter ] after matt gaetz announced the motion to remove Kevin Mccarthy, mccarthy said, gaetz has, quote, personal things in his life that he has challenges with, like figuring out how to set his venmo to private [ laughter ] hunter biden was arraigned in delaware today on federal gun charges. The last time you were here, right before you came on, it was announced that 17 charges i guess the trump organization, not donald trump himself right, yeah seth and now youre here a day after hes in court. I cant decide if thats crazy or just would be the odds are likely right, like, what are the odds i would come on the show on the day Donald Trumps facing legal trouble is the question. Yeah, i dont think theres i dont think theres i cant think of another Single Person whose faced this amount of legal trouble. Seth yeah. In my life. Seth usually people who are like under indictment in this many places are on the lam yes, exactly right. [ laughter ] i also just like at a personal level, i dont know. It stresses me out seth it does like im im like a nerd im like an a student. I dont want to be in trouble. Seth yeah. And its like this guy is in trouble all the time seth yeah. And its like he just seems fine with it i just you know, its too much for me. Seth i think its interesting to watch him in court for this one because this case, which is a civil case. Yes, it is. But a serious one. Seth a serious civil case but not going to do jail time for this but it could cost him a lot of money. But it also goes against his core identity, which is good at business you know, we saw him yesterday one of his arguments was, look, we put at the end of every business document that i have, we put at the end, dont listen to any of this [ light laughter ] if you believe this, its your fault basically seth its your fault, yeah so do you think hes just crippled by the fact that Everybody Knows exactly i mean its so wild because when he said he was going to go to this, i thought it was, you know, classic bluff. Seth yes i guess, yeah, the thing he cares about most is that people think hes rich. You know, he was civilly tried for rape seth yeah. And didnt show up. Like, yeah, whatever seth right whatever. And the jury found him liable for Sexual Assault seth yeah. But this he cares about this he wants to be sure to put his face there although i dont know how much is being accomplished by him sitting there. Seth no. Looking uncomfortable seth he doesnt look good. Who would really . Seth yeah, you dont look at him and go, i think this guy is good at business. [ laughter ] i dont know. I think they got this one wrong. They got it wrong seth i think hes good at business he seems good at business. Look at him, hes right there. He showed up seth yeah, he showed up like a good businessman exactly [ light laughter ] seth so we dont know exactly whats happening right now. It doesnt look good for speaker Kevin Mccarthy he is likely going to lose the speakership by the time this show airs. [ laughter and applause with that said, i dont know how anybody could lead the gop caucus right now its such a structural problem. Seth yeah. I think its fair to say Kevin Mccarthy is not the most impressive politician in my lifetime seth yeah. He really has burned a lot of bridges. Hes not well thought of hes not well regarded he was just the kind of guy who was around seth yeah. You gave a toast at his wedding. [ laughter and applause this is all word for word. Theres a big but after that but at the same time, yes, its a structural problem, and its been very funny to watch all these republicans and conservative media figures are all mad at matt gaetz who has led this effort to kick him out. Theyre saying things like this is such an obvious con hes just doing this for attention and for fundraising and he doesnt have any vision about governing. And its like, well thats true about matt gaetz, but its also true about the guy that runs your party seth yeah. Like, theres all this displaced anger, like matt gaetz, what a fraud you know, this is not a guy who keeps his word this isnt someone whos truthful its like, right so is the guy who runs the entire ethos of the entire conservative movement and Republican Party seth its weird they think they can go at matt gaetz but they dont think they can go at donald trump this is interesting, the sort of i guess the calculus of this moment is a reminder that because there wasnt a red wave, like Kevin Mccarthy does have this very thin line. Right seth and so ultimately, yes, the republicans won the house. But you realize the way they won it, the math just stinks it does, although, thats true and obviously if they had a 20vote majority, it would be a very different situation but pelosi had the exact same majority last congress seth yeah. And was there any of this no, of course not. And partly thats because not only is nancy pelosi an incredibly skilled legislator just in terms of dynamics of keeping a caucus together. Theres just much more of a unified democratic governing vision there was stuff they wanted to do seth yeah. There was really clear stuff and it got worked out through the primary, and there was the inflation reduction act. Theres stuff on climate they wanna do stuff on the care economy that got cut, left on the cutting room floor because of manchin. There was stuff on taxes, on the minimum wage, all this stuff some they did, some they didnt. But there was stuff they wanted to do. Seth yeah. Its just not clear, and this is the sort of vortex of this whole thing is what do you want to do, republicans seth yeah. Theyre up there today talking about they want to cut spending they dont want to cut spending. They voted for all this spending under trump. So, theres this complete absence of an actual articulable governing vision no one can come up with it the only one who can come up with it is the guy sitting in the courthouse in new york seth the businessman the businessman [ laughter ] the excellent businessman whose vision is seth i just gave him a little bit of my money and im very excited well im glad he needs it seth now lets talk about that for a minute because are you surprised that there is literally no challenger to Donald Trumps popularity . We have this pretty wide choice of primary candidates, and i always have my doubts that someone like ron desantis would rise up because it just seemed like he was doing trump, and nobody can do trump better than trump. But is there just no room for an alternative . I think there is room for an alternative, but you have to articulate what that alternative is seth yeah. So desantis was doing a kind of knockoff trump, and the other folks if its tim scott or its nikki haley, are doing, what if you ran for president in 2011 as a republican seth right what if it all never happened and its like, i hate unions and we got to cut Capital Gains taxes and you throw in culture war stuff about men are women and women are women. And he has transformed the party, but not only has he transformed the party, there is no appetite for what came before him and there is no articulation of what a future without him looks like and you cannot beat something with nothing and what you see from the antitrump forces within the coalition of the Republican Party is they got nothing. They got nothing they got nikki haley running like shes from 2011 thats not going to get the job done seth when you watch the republican primaries, do you ever think, this shouldnt be on tv dude, that last one was i mean you and i are both we do this for a living. Seth right that last one was tough seth yeah. I had some notes. [ laughter ] seth im going to reach out and be like, look, i dont like any of you, but i do want to help. Were here with chris hayes. Second show after the end of the Writers Strike were seeing a real interesting moment with labor organizing in america. Obviously sagaftra is still on strike we saw biden on the picket line with the autoworkers yep seth you know, i think we all think about strikes as, you know, wages, benefits, working conditions but what else about this moment do you think is pushing what we see is a very strong Labor Movement in a way we hadnt for a long time . You know, theres a few things one i think, you know, alex press is a really good labor reporter whos been writing for jacobin. I had her on the podcast you know, talked about so much of the stuff ends up coming about things that are deeper than wages its about autonomy and dignity. And ive talked to labor organizers for many years. I used to be largely a labor reporter i had organizers Say Something similar to me that this stuff is always deeper than wages i mean, wages and health care and benefits and work hours and stuff like that matter but when youre doing something as risky as a strike, its because some sense of your dignity and your autonomy as a human being has been fundamentally insulted and i think one of the things is that weve seen covid provoked an enormous reassessment for a lot of people about what your value and what your worth is, about who values you and who doesnt value you, whether the boss does or not about what you want to do with your life. And i think that combined with very tight labor markets, which i think have sort of helped, and also i think this real ceding of kind of left liberal ideas, the product of the discrediting of American Global capitalism that happened after the great recession. And weve seen that grow and grow all thats kind of coming together in this moment where you have more strike action this year than weve literally seen in decades seth i also think, you know, the employers sometimes forget that once, you know, these unions go on strike, once these guilds go on strike, theyve already shown solidarity and they underestimate how much harder it is to get them back to work without you making a concession because they dont want to leave their jobs right seth they dont want to be out of work. When they make that sacrifice and they put their families at a disadvantage by going out, youve got to then bring something to the table so dont let them go on strike thats the first thing you should try very hard to do yes i totally agree with that. And i think one of the things you see is that because strikes have become so rare in america over a long period of time, there was disbelief. The wga is a little bit different because it has been such a militant union. Obviously had a strike in 2008 seth yep but again, thats 15 years. A lot has changed in 15 years. So i think that sort of a reminder of this, a strike is a great tool for unions if you dont have to use it, right . And so i do hope that the strikes were seeing this year have broader effects throughout the economy in how folks in management are thinking about that seth you mentioned your podcast. You have a wonderful podcast, and youre doing it live here we go why is this happening. And do you enjoy doing it in front of a Live Audience i love it i love it. Im a theater kid at heart i like i am i mean seth yeah, you really are. [ laughter ] i feel like people dont see enough of that side of you yeah. Seth i like that you were a theater kid, and your theater director was like, you should go out and talk about political issues. Yeah. Seth youre like, i think id make a good hamlet. Theyre like, no, talk about labor laws. [ laughter ] this is what i ended up doing. Its so funny. Seth you got chicago, philadelphia, new york its a wonderful podcast and you do like really drill down on an issue in a way thats helpful. I love listening to it thank you very much yeah, were really enjoying it seth youre not just a theater kid, youre a real outdoorsman. And you posted this photo recently because a lot of people know you from tv so someone else cut down these trees and then you walked over thats exactly right. [ laughter ] thats exactly right seth so you did cut down theres a lot of hair and makeup just offset right before we set up the shot seth they were like theyre misting you to make it look like you were sweating. It was the below the line workers during the strike. I was like, i got a gig for you. Seth but you recently who was it that addressed the fact that you maybe werent what they expected so my wife took this picture. We have a place upstate and i was chopping up some trees, as you can see there. And i posted it because i was in a bagel shop and this guy was serving me a bag he sort of looks at me, and he goes, are you the guy from tv . Im like, yeah. Hes like, youre chris hayes. Im like, yeah. He goes, yeah, you look like a little accountant on tv. [ light laughter ] but in person, you look like a ballplayer. I was like, well, thank you, buddy. Seth thats really nice. Im trying. Trying to remind everyone im not a little accountant. [ laughter ] seth going out and cutting down trees have my wife take a picture of me chopping down trees. Seth cutting down trees, going to get my bagel. Tough guy stuff. Yeah, exactly seth i want to give you youre very issuebased, and i want to give you an issue to make an argument for because i know you feel very passionate about this as passionate as you feel about labor laws and the plight of the working man, you feel strongest that minivans get a bad rap. Make a case, chris hayes, for minivans go all right first negative case, the crossover is dead. It looks terrible. Everyones driving some, like, knockoff suv what are you doing youre dropping your kids off in a jeep youre not going to war. Youre not driving on sand youre not doing anything you need a jeep for. Youre driving to third grade to drop your kids off you do not need an enormous suv. But if like me you have three kids, if youre a family man, a family woman, you need space the van, the minivan, in all its beautiful glory, is the sublime synthesis of form following function seth oh, my god. When you drive around in a minivan, youre saying to the world and using the correct tool for the correct task, which is trucking your kids around to endless things they have to go to and not pretending youre driving in a jeep going to war seth there you go.
