If approved, the initiative would allow sfpd to install security cameras and have greater access to existing public cameras. The measure would ease limits on the Police Pursuit policy and allow the use of Artificial Intelligence technologies for crime fighting. A prominent bay area philanthropist has quite an offer for san jose, acres of land to house the homeless for a price of 1. 00 a year. Today the San Jose City council is voting on whether or not to accept it and develop tiny homes on this property. Nbc bay areas ian cull has been digging into this story today. First off, ian, what exactly would this look like . Weve covered so many of these tiny home stories. They keep sprouting up on City Property throughout this year. This project would be on another layer. The san jose mayor says billionaire john sobrato called him earlier this year and is offering this land as a site for tiny homes. Its an industrial and Commercial Area near the 85 and 101 interchange. The cost of property would be 1. 00 for a fiveyear lease. He told the mayor the property has been vacant for years. The city council would soon vote on when to move forward. What i think is exciting about this model is it gets private Property Owners in on the solutions to homelessness. This would look different from the other ones, yeah . Yes, it would. Each house would have twobedrooms and be solar powered. The nonprofit dig any moves would be tasked with building out the sites. Because its a fiveyear lease, they said they would use prefabricated tiny homes that can easily be installed but also be transported to another site once the lease is up. The beauty of relocatable is it opens up all sorts of possibilities in terms of land we can take advantage of while the next thing is being planned. It also helps with the neighborhood. Its only here for five years, they pick up and move to another location. The city would offer those 150 units to be unhoused within a mile and a half of that property, and also to homeless seniors and veterans. The city council is discussing this as we speak. Theres Public Comments going on, some for, some against. Well have an update at 6 00. Theres a lot to discuss. Looking for the update at 6 00. Theyve noticed a deer in their neighborhood who appears to have a trap around its leg limping around. How exactly did it happen and what is being done to help this deer . Our Damian Trujillo has been looking for us. You got your hands on the video. I got to see a little bit of it. Its sad. Reporter it is sad, audrey. Its unknown exactly how it happened. This dear does happen what is a metal trap attached to one of his front hooves or its leg. Its been limping around the neighborhood for about two to three weeks now. Its upsetting a lot of the neighbors in our area. These traps are illegal. Animal control tells us these traps are used mainly for raccoons, possums and smaller animals. They are illegal because theyre inhumane in the state of california. Theyre afraid there may be more out there that have not come in contact with any of this kind of wildlife. Theyre afraid a dog might get stuck in one of them. The word is out to any ranchers who might have put them out, dont do it because they do injury animals like the little fawn on your screen. Are the neighbors doing anything to help . Well, they rallied together. One of the neighbors actually happens to be a deer rescuer. Hes rescued about 12 in the last year or so, he adopts them, brings them back to health and releases them back in the wild. He bought whats called a net gun. Its what Police Officers use to capture criminals, a less lethal way of apprehension. He hopes to get 15 feet of this fawn and shoot at it, trap it and then in some way release that trap. He did hear late this afternoon from state fish and wildlife, they want to help out as well. There might be a partnership there in the near future. I really hope they find that deer. Damian, looking forward to your full story at 6 00. It was a chaotic wakeup call for a family in the south bay. The driver was checked out at the scene and then arrested for dui. They want to build a selfcontained city in solano county. Organizers are promising affordable housing. Billionaires purchased 52 acres and last night the ceo of whats called California Forever answered questions in a community forum. Hes promising the project will create more affordable housing, but some are still skeptical. Our approach is trying to do something about it, both by bringing better jobs here and creating more affordable housing. How that is going to make it affordable. When you take land values that were 3500 an acre ten years ago, less than that, seven years ago, eight years ago, and now weve made it through acquisitiontion, 10,000, 15,000 an acre. How are you going to make that affordable . The fate of this project may ultimately likely come down to voters. The group is hoping to place the measure on the ballot next fall. How much trash do you create every day . Numbers surprised me. May surprise you, too. Here is meteorologist kari hall. In todays climate in crisis, studies show californians are doing a trashy job reducing waste with an estimated six pounds per person every day. Thats 2200 pounds per year. While Waste Management systems are working hard to divert that waste from landfills by recycling and composting, the best way to reduce our impact is by not using items that produce a lot of trash in the first place. Consider the packaging of the products. Reuse what you can, and make it easier to improve your citys Waste Management. Waste is more challenging when its mixed all together. If were able to separate it, if your organic waste is separated from your paper and landfillable waste, its easier to reuse, to beneficially reuse the parts of our waste if theyre separated. Once theyre all mixed together, it really becomes trash and it becomes very difficult to recycle, to compost, to make beneficial use out of these products if theyre all mixed. Reducing our waste in turn reduces bad Greenhouse Gas emissions which is causing Global Temperatures to warm making our weather more extreme.
