17th, 2023. Breaking news, show of solidarity, President Biden is set to visit israel tomorrow. What the administration hopes to accomplish as Richard Engel gets exclusive new reporting from hamas. Also breaking, undecided voters. Congressman jordan fails to woo enough of his colleagues to win the speakers chair. Whats next now. Silent support, what the u. S. Military is doing behind the scenes to assist our closest allies in the middle east. We begin this hour with some more breaking news, several Significant Developments surrounding the israelhamas war, President Biden is leaving today for a visit to the middle east, to israel, in a show of support for that country. A senior hamas official tells nbc news the group is willing to release all civilian hostages if the bombing stops. Our Richard Engel. Reporter theyre willing to release the civilians, israelis around foreigners, and if israel stopped bombing it would be an easy thing to do and they could release in an hours time. He wasnt talking about a deadline. He said, if israel stops bombing it would become very simple, theyre willing to do this and they want to do this, they want to hand over the civilians but they need the bombing to stop. Breaking right now in gaza, the Palestinian HealthMinistry Said as many as 300 people were killed after a strike on a hospital. As many as 500 victims in all. Israeli military is investigating what happened. The critical rafah border cross on the border with egypt also remains closed, no agreement on how and when to open it at the same time lines of trucks carrying humanitarian aid cant get in. Only specialized Cancer Hospital says now it will shut down in less than 48 hours if it doesnt get fuel for its generators. Tom llamas is with us in tel aviv and girn gilchrist is with us in washington. We mentioned that strike on a hospital, palestinian sources saying that its quite bad, many injured and dead. Can you tell us what you know . Reporter yeah, kate, the story is changing pretty quickly, the initial report out of gaza, the hospital in central gaza said about 200 to 300 people have died, now reports that up to 500 people are dead in what the palestinian authorities call an israeli air strike the Israeli Defense force has been asked about this and so far theyre not commenting theyre going to investigate, these images right here, it apoors to be several other hospitals. When youre talking about 500 people, you have to wonder how many of those people are innocent. Im looking to my left, we just heard a loud boom. We dont see anything in the sky. Couple of hours ago there was two rockets that came over tel aviv. The iron dome looked to intercept that. This has been a daily occurrence in tel aviv and different cities around israel, from what we know the rockets you see here caused zero damage so far but its still the way israelis are living even worse as you get further south and toward tel aviv youre seeing scenes like this almost every day and every night. Aaron, i know President Biden will be flying into that active war zone, he did that during a trip to ukraine, but this is different, talk to us about that, whats distinctive about the israelhamas war . Reporter this is different. We learned over the weekend that the president had been invited to come to israel and so his team started working figuring out whether there was an opportunity to do that and do it safely and then of course yesterday we learned that the president had made the decision that hell go to israel leaving this afternoon and getting there tomorrow spending the day to talk to israeli Prime Minister in particular to show his solidarity with the israelis. But also to talk about the military strategy thats being executed. Theres a lot to talk about what israel will be doing next. Of course the humanitarian crisis thats developing in gaza, the spokesperson for National Security council spoke to nbc news earlier today about the president s mission. One of the reasons the president wants to go is to speak directly with Prime Minister netanyahu and other iz ray hee government officials about their plans, their strategy, about how things are going on the ground. Reporter the president will also go to jordan where hes expected to meet with leaders of jordan, egypt and the Palestinian Authority to talk about the humanitarian crisis thats growing in gaza. Aaron, thank you. Going back to tom, youve been speaking with people across israel today, what are they saying about where things stand right now. Reporter kate, we went to jerusalem to the old city to see if we can get an israeli and palestinian to sit down together to talk about this war. We got their opinions, very, very strong opinions, stark differences about the way they see this war, everyone the way they see the paris attack that happened in israel by those hamas terrorists. Whats happening in gaza right now could be seen the same way when innocent people are dying as well. After long talks even though they dont agree on v israel and palestinians. They do agree on peace. You can see more of toms reporting by the way tonight on a special edition of top story live from israel, stream that starting at 7 00 p. M. Eastern on nbc news now. Breaking news right here in the United States on capitol hill, the latest vote to choose the next speaker of the house has failed. Jim jordan of ohio lost in first round of voting, he fell 17 votes short. That means yet again the republicancontrolled house appears no closer to choosing its next leader. Jim jordan is now meeting with some gop colleagues who voted against him trying to win over their support. Kevin mccarthy was ousted in an unprecedented vote earlier this month. Ryan nobles joins us now. Why did jordan fail to get enough votes, walk us through, from his fellow republicans. Reporter not one specific reason jordan fell short of the magic number to become the next speaker of house, its wide range, a diverse set of republicans who voted against him. The chair of the appropriations committee, a potential no vote for him. Others that were supporters, steve scalise, originally won the nomination to be speaker but then never brought that to the floor because there were holdouts for jordan. A wide range of issues here for jim jordan and the big question is, will he attempt to do this again . His spokesperson relating to nbc news they expect to have another vote on the house floor some time today. Jordan will continue to put pressure on those 20 holdouts to try to swing them in his direction. Kate. The clock is ticking for a potential other vote, what could this mean for items on the houses agenda . Reporter thats the big story here, 14 days without a House Speaker its historic, its never happened before and its coming at a time of great peril all around the world, the situation in israel and in ukraine and the situation here in the United States the potential for another Government Shutdown in the middle of november. None of that can be addressed by the u. S. Government if the house is not in session. The house can do anything but hold votes for speaker of the house. This is a serious situation here. Part of jordans pitch to some of these holdouts, we need to get back to the business of governing. Right now i have the most support. Theres a lot of different ways this could go. Right now, everyone who predicts with certainty is probably just joking with it. Ryan, last week you said you were willing to stay all night. Ill be here. Thank you. Time for todays money minute. A ford exec is weighing in on uaw strike. One company is investing in insect protein. Ford motors executive bill ford asked Union Members and leaders to work with ford to reach an agreement and end what he called actry moanous talks. More than 16,000 of uaw are currently striking. The number of americans working from home since the pandemic has dropped from a new low, only about a quarter of households still have someone working remotely one day a week or more. That number peaked in early 2021. Tyson foods is venturing into the insect protein industry, it agreed to buy a stake in an insect company and together the two companies will be build that produces bugbased meals. This is all part of the push of Big Companies looking at bugs for a source of protein. But not for human food. No, typically used in dog food but i believe this will be for human food. Sounds chewy. I have had insects before in mexico. Had some crickets, folks. Had some in africa. Its the future. Kate, thank you. Coming up, well talk about what the u. S. Congressman jordan coming up short on the first vote, unclear when someone can get the necessary votes. If he does reach the threshold of 217 and gets the top job that could have significant implications for america, for all of us. Hallie jackson joins us to help unpack some of this. Hallie, so, weve said it time and again, we havent had a speaker for a while now and jim jordan cant seem to get the votes so far, what is the Practical Impact of all that . You look at the practicality of urgency, first, whats happening in the middle east w that International Crisis and the war between israel hand mass here, theres an appetite and from the white house of course, to get new aid over to israel, they cant pass. Until a House Speaker is in place. Further out, this Government Shutdown deadline coming up a month from today, meaning we just went through this, right, is there going to be a deal to get the government funded . Part of why mccarthy got ousted as House Speaker back then, what happens in 30 days if theres still no House Speaker. You go further out, you look at the potential of ukraine might need additional aid the kinds of things that congress is tasked with doing. They that cant happen without a speaker in place. Some urgency here. As youre seeing, its a Holding Pattern for sure over on capitol hill, jim jordans team says they expect to hold another round of voting today. Not an indication he has broken through in a significant way just yet of getting a good portion of those 20 republicans who voted against him over to the other side. Hallie, how does the house move forward . Can anyone lead the house with a fractured majority like this . Thats the existential question of all this, you have conference of 200plus members who are on a spectrum here from the far right to the more moderate, center if you will, some of these members in a district who voted overall for President Biden in the last election but elected republican in districts. Like matt gaetz for example the impetus for getting former Speaker Mccarthy ousted in first place, hes in a solidly red district, thats a lot of competing interests in one conference. Every conference has to manage this. This particular conference, though, as Kevin Mccarthy has found is very tough to wrangle, members on the far right very comfortable of exerting their muscle, flexing some of their influence here to try to bend the conference to their will. We saw that with the ouster of Kevin Mccarthy, most republicans didnt want to see Kevin Mccarthy to be ousted. Remember, part of the reason that is theres very thin margin in the house of representatives between republicans and democrats. Every vote always counts, especially so when the margins are this tight. Hallie, it seems like the republicans are unified on one thing, investigations into President Biden and the biden administration, you expect that will continue if jordan wins the speaker hip. Yeah, definitely, especially if its jim jordan, kate, hes been one of the key players leading the charges. One of the committees, along with oversight, digging into President Biden, hunter biden, holding these hearings only going to heat up as we head into 2024 here, because republicans see this as a way to try to sort of rally their base against President Biden, obviously running for the white house again when it comes to his competition with whoever the republican nominee is at this point. More than likely its going to be former president donald trump, hes leading in the polls and his influence on this Republican Party seems pretty clear at this moment. Somebody who a vast majority of the republican electorate supports in his nomination and his run for the white house. This socalled fight for the soul of the Republican Party, Donald Trump Endorsed jim jordan here, endorsed jim jordan to be speaker, but keep in mind where the holdouts are in large part are, its not the donald trump wing of the party, its the more moderate wing of the party, again not 100 mostly on the other end of the spectrum is finding it unplatable to vote for jim jordan for speaker. London breed was empassioned as she talked about the changes that will allow Police Officers more time fighting crime rather than having to stand by watching because of city policies or spending time writing reports. Here is what the mayor wants voters to say yes to next march. The mayor wants to allow police to use and install surveillance cameras, allow them to use drones and ai and other technology in their policing. She wants to change the rules and policies that she says prevent sfpd officers from pursuing suspects and requires them to spend hours at their desks filling out reports rather than being out on the streets. Here is where the mayor got fired up. She wants to reform the Police Commission, which she says changes policies and issues conflicting policies but is not required to explore the cost of said policies nor account to the public. No more, no you cant, no you cant. Lets get to yes so we can make our city safer. The mayor says in the sfpd, officers working in partnership with Community Organizations like united players and the street violence intervention program, they have reduced crime in the city and increased the number of crimes solved. They accused them of a lack of oversight and accountability. Gross incompetence and gross negligence. The mayor is expected to talk about a number of issues, such problems and a lack of a Permanent Police chief. Other topics might include finances and losing the oak land as to las vegas. We will be streaming her address at 2 00 in the afternoon today. Lawmakers are trying to elect a new speaker of the house. It has been two weeks since Kevin Mccarthy was voted out of the position after a rebellion inside the gop. Efforts to repolice him have come up short. The latest gop candidate, jim jordan, failed to win the majority after the first round of voting. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries was ahead of him with 212 votes. 217 are needed to win. The house has gone into recess ahead of another round. Without a House Speaker, lawmakers cannot pass any legislation holding up critical bills, including any aid for the conflict in israel. Federal authorities have opened a hate Crime Investigation into the deadly stabbing of a 6yearold palestinian american boy. Hundreds of people packed a mosque near chicago yesterday for his funeral, local prosecutors say wadea was murdered inside his home by the familys landlord because the landlord. Can you tell us how theyre remembering here him today. He spoke to the crowd outside that funeral in arabic, called his son a martyr and he hoped this horrific attack will be the bullet in his words to sort of solve this situation. What we heard from everyone outside that funeral, lot of emotional conversations, if nothing else this horrific heinous attack, now as a hate crime in illinois, hope its a wakeup call of bigotry and threats that palestinian americans are facing tied to this war. Take a listen. You start with shock that this happened right here in your backyard. Youre worried for the community. Youre worried for your family. You want to fight back but youre afraid for yourself. Reporter we had multiple people cry during our interview. The boy was 6 years old, he was stabbed 26 times. His mother they say was stabbed 12 times. The landlord now facing murder and hate crime charges in illinois and also as you said that federal investigation. Maggie, so upsetting, what more are we learning about the suspect and his relationship with this little boy. Reporter yeah, guys, it was really interesting and really clear off the bat how prosecutors immediately tied this murder in their words to the war, to the hamas attacks in israel, saying that prior to the war according to family and family told us that the landlord and the little boy had a warm relationship and the wife of the landlord told prosecutors that her husband had been listening to a lot of conservative talk radio on a regular basis and thats when he got really angry about the war and hamas and subsequently fearful of Palestinian People and that was the root according to prosecutors of this awful crime. Guys. So hard to see violence anywhere abroad and hitting home so closely. Against the child thats the part thats so hard. Lets go back now to the breaking news out of gaza. The Palestinian HealthMinistry Said hundreds of people were killed after a strike on a hospital in central gaza. The ministry claims it was targeted attack by israel. This latest strike is coming as a senior hamas official tells nbc news theyre willing to release all civil ian civilians bombing stops. That was a lot of news that we just covered right there. I guess, lets start with first of all, President Biden walking into this situation tomorrow and were reporting two things there that theres been some kind of explosion in gaza thats killed a lot of people near a hospital and were also reporting that Richard Engel is reporting, that a senior hamas official saying we might release hostages if the bombing stops. What President Biden can try to do is focus on what to do to relieve the humanitarian aid in gaza. He also has an objective deterring hezbollah from opening a second front. His presence here creates a demonstration of how close the United States is to israel and with his presence, with our military presence now in the region, hezbollah and iran should be very careful. Deterring them from widening the war and the third thing is to get a better sense from israelis whats the sense of their military strategy now and an endgame for after this war . Israel is operating like isis is next to i want to add one thing, ive now seen reports and talked to a couple of military men of what happened at the hospital, everyone i talked to this doesnt have the look of an air strike, it looked like an errant hamas missile hitting. Nbc news hasnt confirm that either way. Our Richard Engels reporting, hamas call for air strikes to stop and release hostages. Civilian hostages. What do you make of that, do you think its likely . Hamas trying to open up a negotiating wedge, i suspect if the israelis would say okay, were prepared to call for a limited stop they would have another conditions, what theyre trying to do is theyre trying to get the israelis to stop militarily attacking all the hamas sites within gaza. I would i dont think you dismiss Something Like this but you have to look at it with a cynical eye given who hamas is. In previous administrations youve tried to negotiate with these parties. Its more challenging in the aftermath of these kinds of events. I like to say every time we were making significant progress with peace we would end one a hamas suicide bombing that would disrupt everything, they werent doing it to see we wouldnt succeed we saw secretary blinken have an hours long meeting, are they trying to avoid a ground invasion. I think what theyre trying to do is to say give us a better picture of what youre going to attack, how youre going to attack, were not asking nor your operational details, we want to know how it fits with your objective. We hear a lot of talk about we want to eliminate hamas, you destroy their rocketmaking potential and their infrastructure and decapitate some of the leadership, if you do these kind of things youll weaken hamas to the point where you can create an alternative administration within gaza, then you have to have a plan for what comes after, who makes that up . What kind of role for regional players . Foreign players . Who comes in and provides security not just in a sense civilian administration a whole series of questions and it would be good to have that conversation with israelis now. When you talk about day after scenarios you dont wait until planning to do the after scenarios until youre in the midst of it. The humanitarian situation, developing a strategy for the use of military force but also relates to a political outcome. Great to have your perspective. Lets bring in pentagon correspondent courtney kube. Close to 2,000 u. S. Troops are now on whats being on whats called possible to deploy order. What do those orders mean . Reporter so, it would take the president , the president would have to say, yes, i want to send i want to deploy these troops to the region. Where we are right now, secretary of defense austin signed some orders he wanted 2,000 troops to be on this prepare to deployed order, what that means, these are already troops who would have been on a short deployment anyway, 96 hours from the time they get the call to go and they have to be on that airfield to leave. Now these troops would be on 24 hours. To move to region. At this point, initially, they wouldnt be going into israel. It would be in a support role. Things like medical, logistics, might even talk about intelligence spot, explosives experts, those kinds of things. I need to keep stressing even once these thousands troops get these prepare to deploy order, theres still no order that anyone will be moving forward. Definitely a waiting game. Courtney, thank you so much. Coming up, disturbing scenes from israel with the war with from israel with the war with hamas. California sky todos alcanzamos Las Estrellas sunny state of mind flexin all the time todo es dorado feels so golden vive en el Estado Dorado this attack was a campaign of pure cruelty. Not just hate but pure cruelty against the jewish people. And i would argue its the deadliest day for jews since the holocaust. For more than a week now weve been watching the painful and disturbing images from the israelhamas war and weve been hearing the heartbreaking stories from innocent civilians caught in crossfire. The scene from the initial attacks almost two weeks were horrifying. Joining us now is rabbi, senior rabbi at washington hebrew congregation and psycho therapist dr. Robbi ludwig. The term generational trauma. It can apply to the Jewish Community and other communities as well. When a horrific event happens that influences generations to come, it can happen through war, it can happen through oppression, it can happen through racial, so ocio economic injustices and it gets transferred biologically. Rabbi, would love to hear from you about this generational trauma, how is it showing up in your community. I think many in the Jewish Community are feeling this generational trauma that has been passed down from, as we just heard President Biden say in that clip, that this was the deadliest day since the holocaust. And the deadliest moment in the Jewish Community worldwide since that time. I think for many, in many ways its flashback. I know theres fear and anxie t a sense of isolation as well. Dr. Robi, for those who are experiencing that type of trauma, how do you address those feelings, how do you acknowledge and cope . First of all, you need to find out where the trauma comes from, and allow yourself to identify it and that will help with the coping mechanism. And developing a way to grieve or process those emotions. Its also very helpful to find a support group, in some cases connect with your culture and have a sense of cultural proud and always Mental Health doctors and therapists who are help us deal with various traumas and what that could look like in various people and personality and acknowledging the trauma and the feelings this shouldnt be a source of weakness its a strength. Rabbi, as a faith leader what do you say to people who are having a hard time right now. We have been seeing people coming together in community and not just within the Jewish Community, people coming to synagogue to make sense, to try to ask questions, we had a number of opportunities for experts to come and talk about what is happening so people want to know and understand what is happening certainly currently on the ground, but in addition, i think people are really turning to their faith for people are praying for peace for everyone affected and impacted by this war. People are trying to make meaning. People are coming together to seek wholeness, to seek some kind of solace when theres such the inhumanity that can exist. Dr. Robi, a way to break the cycle of generational trauma . Absolutely, and when we think about it, its passed through our dnaened its really there to protect us, once we realize we can be safe and that we can be healed and that we can manage our emotions and that we can change our world view and have a different ideology of how we experience ourselves and others, then we may need to feel not endangered anymore and we can let some of those traumas go. Thats how we put a stop to that continuation to that generational trauma by realizing were safe andwe can come together. Rabbi, youre with people at their best and also at their worst, if someone at home is struggling with this war, what do you recommend . I would recommend for people to turn to, to the rabbis or their faith leaders and to connect, to reach out to us for help. We have within our community, weve had an outpouring of people who are in who work in Mental Health, therapists, psychologists, who have offered their time and resources. Their time and resources.
