Good monday morning to you, everyone. Im scott mcgrew. Marcus washington has the day off. And im laura garcia. Well check that monday morning commute with mike in just a little bit. Kari is back with a look at our forecast. It looks good to start out the week, but more clouds, and then its going to heat up as we go throughout the next several days. This morning the issue is the visibility were seeing in parts of the north bay, as well as trying to get across the Golden Gate Bridge, where you can see all of the fog here. It may be misting and drizzling as youre driving with visibility cut down to about a quarter of a mile around santa rosa. So its settling into some of the valleys, but elsewhere it is clear. Here is a look at our highs today, San Francisco headed for the upper 60s, across the bay to oakland, expect it to reach 73 degrees. Well see upper 70s and low 80s in the forecast for some of our interior valleys, but we are going to have some much hotter temperatures ahead. So ill have more on that in a few minutes. Mike, how is it looking at the richmondsan rafael bridge . We dont have the trucks, but we have the right lanes blocked. Configuration change, theyve added a cement barrier. You cannot access those right lanes. Thats all right, these four lanes are typically the ones that get backed up, anyway, in the morning. Theres a shift out and a shift back. It may restrict traffic throw a bit. It looks relatively normal. Highway 4, the bay bridge, nothing dramatic. We are looking at vasco with slowing as you head around the bend toward dalton and then 580. Were over 20 minutes from marsh creek out of Contra Costa County. The rest of the bay is smooth. Back to you. New this morning, nature giving some people an early wakeup call near the oregon border. A 4. 8 quake centered near eureka struck about 3 20 this morning. No reports of injury or damage. A 4. 7 rattled the same area back on september 30th. Now to developments in the middle east, where right now two major events are playing out. This is a live look at gaza city, and while israel has yet to launch a ground invasion, u. S. Secretary of state blinken early this morning paid another visit to israel. The latest count lists more than 2,700 deaths in gaza and 1,400 in israel. At least 29 americans have died. We have new video to show you of the destruction. This is just into our newsroom. You can see people in gaza are just using their hands and working as a team to try to lift some of the rubble off as they continue to search for bombing survivors. More from today in the bays brie jackson live in washington. Theres still the issue of so Many Americans stranded in israel. Reporter thats right. Good morning, scott, laura. So the rafah border between egypt and gaza is open this morning, allowing foreign nationals to evacuate and aid to also come in, although it is unclear for how long that will remain open. In the meantime, the u. S. Is working to evacuate americans to safety conflict in israel enters another week. Hamas wants to see if they cant get something, and im sure there will be some kind of exchange that theyll be looking for. Reporter a Bipartisan Group of lawmakers visiting israel was forced to find shelter, after experiencing the dangers firsthand. They vowed to help. Prime minister netanyahu has invited President Biden to travel to israel on a solidarity visit amid the war. The white house is considering that request. Scott, laura. Well watch for that. Brie jackson in washington, thank you. For those americans lucky enough to have made it out of israel, the return home is often incredibly complicated, and that includes the trek for one of our own coworkers. Today in the bays kris sanchez is taking a closer look at that part of the story. Shes live at mineta airport in san jose. Good morning, kris. Reporter laura, its been a tenuous journey for the americans who have been able to get out of israel. All eyes are on airports like this one here. Mineta san jose, people are starting to trickle back into the communities where they live and where they are from. Now, as brie mentioned, there is another route out of israel this morning through egypt, where americans and other foreigners are being allowed to cross the border from gaza. Up to 600 americans remain in gaza, according to the state department. Now, thousands of other american citizens are also leaving israels port for cypress today. As we reported, the u. S. Government is only arranging travel out of israel, and then after that, passengers are ono y back home. Our nbc bay area colleague edwin alvarado, is among the americans who made it out, but not yet home. He is not in the bay area. He is now in columbia, thanks to the Columbian Air force, which picked him and other passengers up in tel aviv, then headed to portugal, then the dominican republic, then landing in columbia, where he is originally from. It has been an excruciating wait to get out. When i get out, i see family members, family waiting for their loved ones, its hard. Its hard when you feel the fear of you can be hurt any second. Other families were reunited in tampa, where almost 300 americans arrived stateside, including almost 100 american children. They were able to make it out of tel aviv, transported by a nonprofit called project dynamo, with the help from the Florida Governor and president ial hopeful ron desantis. The state department is working with delta airlines, united in an effort to get people back to where they are. We did see there is an increased risk and threat to jewish and Muslim Americans across the country. I mention this because we are often here at mineta san jose, weve been here plenty of times before. Today we had the closest screening weve ever had. So definitely everybody paying more attention this morning. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. They say those threats to people are up, like, 300 . Its ridiculous. Thank you very much, kris. It is. 6 08 right now. Stay with us for the latest developments. Topics covered everything from the Supreme Court to Social Security, to inflation, which porter tried to cover in this response. The single biggest thing we can do to address this is to invest in Government Policies that create more competition. Taking a live look this morning at the Golden Gate Bridge, we continue to watch that fog, and i know, kari, there is a fog warning out there. Yeah, we do have that as a heads up before you head out the door this morning. You may want to allow some extra time to get to work, because visibility may drop rapidly, especially in parts of the north bay valleys. As we take a live look outside in oakland, you can see it is a clear view, and across much of the rest of the bay area. As we check out the east bay, berkeley, what to expect throughout the morning, it will be in the mid50s at 8 00, were seeing those clouds linger throughout the day as the system approaches from the north. So well talk more about this and a heatup for the middle of the week in a few minutes. Mike, how are those gas prices . The ones i see are dropping quite a bit, many stations. We have the same lead as friday as far as location, 20 cents lower. 4. 59, livermores diamond gas and mart on south front road. In san jose, south bays best is 4. 89 at National Petroleum on key street. And the same for Solano County as far as price goes, 4. 89 at costco in vallejo on plaza drive. Lets get a look at gilroy and our day planner, with temperatures starting out very chilly, in the low 50s, and it is partly cloudy. Well see a mix of sun and clouds throughout the morning, but mainly cloudy into the afternoon, as our highs head for the upper 70s. Well get a look at where we can see rain and a big warmup coming up in a few minutes. 101 right here through san jose, again, northbound, coming out of morgan hills, san martin. A lot of traffic down there. Were starting to see it build again, in about another 15, 20 minutes, we should see more Silicon Valley slowing. Well track that, as well as the build in the east bay. Wall street is set for a higher open ahead of a busy week of corporate earnings. Market is coming off a mixed week. Dow and s p 500 ended higher, nasdaq slipped. It takes weeks for Shelly Jimenez to think up and create the elaborate swamptheme decorations at her willow green home. She does it for her son chris, who has faced Health Issues for all of his life, yet he loves halloween. In 2020, chris lost his eyesight, but it didnt stop his mother from getting into the halloween spirit, and hopefully spreading some of that to her son. I do hope theres a little part in him that knows that ive kept the tradition up, one that he loved so much. Such a loving mom. She says hundreds of people visit her displays every year, and some have traveled from as far away as san diego. So if youre in the bay area, shes over in willow glen. Clearly a lot of work. I know. And a lot of storage, i always think. Thats true. But absolutely worth it. Its just the front room. Its fine. [ laughter ] its the season. Although the weather is not really cooperating. Its going to feel like fall today, but in a couple of days its going to be heating up. Were watching out for visibility as well this morning, especially in the north bay. Weve seen some dense fog moving around, theres a fog advisory in effect, and that means that as youre driving, you may encounter some very low visibility over a short distance. So you want to make sure youre overall just keeping speeds down and being careful on your way to work. Now were looking at temperatures to start out the week feeling nice and mild, but its also going to be partly to mostly cloudy. In cupertino, expect a high of 76 degrees, and some upper 70s for morgan hill, reaching 78 degrees, 79 degrees, and 80 in danville, while oakland will hit a high of 73 degrees. Along the coast were in the low 70s. Half moon bay reaching 71 degrees, and 74 in redwood city, and also some light jacket weather in parts of San Francisco, but feeling very comfortable. In the Mission District, a high of 70 degrees today, and some upper 70s for much of the north bay. But this is also where we could see some showers moving in, as a system approaches from the north. So were seeing some of the rain now about to approach eureka. By the time it makes it into the north bay, its going to be for the evening commute. A lot of it just falling apart. Most of us wont see any rain at all, but it will stay mostly cloudy, some light showers moving through, and were just talking a few hundredths of an inch of rain. So nothing really significant here. And then throughout the evening we are going to see a mostly cloudy sky. Then the temperatures start to ramp up, as High Pressure builds across the region, but thats going to cause a spike in temperatures thats going to be very brief. By early next week we could possibly be watching out for a better chance of rain that could cover the bay area, but thats not until next wednesday. So until then, we have big swings in temperatures. In san jose, were going from highs in the upper 70s today to upper 80s on wednesday, and then topping out at 95 degrees on thursday. But then for the weekend, were back down into the 70s and next week we may see temperatures in the upper 60s. A lot of changes over the next few days. And you want to make sure youre checking in on the forecast every day, because its going to be so different from day to day. But once again, its going to be the hottest for the middle to end of the week, and then the weekend is looking pretty nice, with San Franciscos temperatures headed for the low 80s by wednesday. Mike, youre seeing a backup coming out of richmond. Yeah, we have the formation of the backup a little earlier, as we talked about, and it will last a little longer because these three lanes are blocked off by the cement barrier. This is west out of richmond toward san rafael. Here we see the slowing as folks funnel down to four lanes, and theres no relief at the toll plaza. Hasnt been a major shift, just a few more people heading north through highway 37, up and over. Do keep that in mind. Theres more Traffic Building into richmond as well and to berkeley, as youre looking at the bay bridge and the toll plaza, a steady backup. Highway 4 slow through concord. Walnut creek is at speed. More Traffic Building toward union city off of 880. 680 Holding Steady with slowing through pleasanton. The south bay not yet showing the Silicon Valley build. North 101 will start to show more slowing around oakland road in the next few minutes. Thats a little later for the south bay. We should start to see the sensors change over the next couple of minutes, maybe by 6 30. Back to you. Thanks, mike. New beginnings for the Kelly Clarkson show. As we take a look outside in san jose, it is nice and clear, but very chilly to start. Pleasanton, what to expect this morning as youre heading out for work, its in the mid50s at 7 00, and you can see that there is a lot of cloud icons there as we go throughout the morning and into the afternoon, as those temperatures stay a little lower. We are going to have a mostly cloudy day. Watching the north bay for a chance of some very light showers later on this evening. After that, were going to have some much hotter temperatures ahead. So ill talk more about that coming up in just a few minutes. Mike, youre taking a look at that foggy view. Foggy at the Golden Gate Bridge, and many folks are used to that. Youve been telling everybody about this warning, and it will take you up to the north bay. See the yellow highlighting . Over at petaluma and novato, dog is registering denser. That will affect folks on 101. As we look toward 680 toward sunol, we have a crash toward the sunol exit. Watch for activity. Getting more updates from chp. Its kind of smoothing out a little bit now. Thats critical for the trivalley. A build for hayward and south bay, just starting for north 101 in san jose. Thank you very much. Developing right now, a live look in gaza, still under heavy bombardment from israel. So far, theres no indication of an imminent ground invasion. More than 4,000 people are now confirmed to have died on both sides of the con conflict, with 30 americans confirmed to be among them, and at least a dozen more still missing. Thousands of citizens in israel are expected to evacuate to cypress. The ship is designated for u. S. Nationals and their immediate family members. Those onboard will be responsible for arranging their own travel accommodations from cypress. Also this morning, egypt is expected to allow foreign passport holders in gaza to start crossing its border, while security sources in egypt say an agreement has been reached to open the crossing. Israel maintains theres no truce of any kind and its not clear how long that crossing will actually remain open. Emotions over the tensions in the middle east are spilling out in the bay area as well. Bob redell joins us with details on an apparent hate crime there. Reporter good morning to you, laura. Correct, the San Francisco Jewish Community Relations Council tweeted out this photo. You can see it on your screen there. That shows two messages spray painted in red on windows to a business here in the city. One message reads death to zionism, the other death to israel. Council wrote, we are deeply disturbed by graffiti along Market Street after yesterdays protests propalestinian rally in San Francisco. We have been in touch with city leaders and sfpd to investigate this crime. This was the scene yesterday outside San Francisco city hall, where a number of people waved the israeli flag in support of israel, attacked by hamas just over a week ago. A number of israelis are still being held hostage in the gaza strip. Obviously the ultimate goal is to get them home, but its also at some point to be proactive in not allowing these things to happen and for the world to realize what israel is dealing with on a daily basis, fighting for their land and their lives. I dont think that any murder of innocent babies and grandmothers and youth celebrating a happy festival, there is no justification in the murder of all those innocent people. We want basic human rights in palestine for everyone, including jewish and israeli citizens. We dont want any innocent civilians being killed or kidnapped, and we dont want no more settlers taking over the homes of palestinians. Reporter that man was one of more than 700 people who lined Stevens Creek boulevard to show their support for the palestinian people. At one point supporters marched through santana row and briefed forced a shutdown. Reporting live, bob redell. Thanks for the details. Meantime, in illinois, authorities calling a brutal hate crime, leaving a lot in utter shock, especially in the muslim community. Investigators say a young boy was stabbed to death, his mother attacked. He was just a little boy. The today shows Stephanie Gosk reports the landlord apparently targeted them for their faith. Reporter good morning to you. Law enforcement has concerns really on two fronts this morning. One, that terror groups might use this opportunity to stage attacks here in this country. They are also concerned that the anger that is mounting over this conflict in the middle east could turn into violence here in this country. There is a shocking murder of a 6yearold palestinian american boy in illinois. He was stabbed to death in his home, police say, by a landlord. Theyre calling it a hate crime. Meanwhile, in other places around the country, including synagogues like this one, security is increased and people are at a heightened state of alert as the Antidefamation League says that threats and antisemitic incidents are up 300 this week compared to last year. It has the whole country, really, on alert for how this conflict thousands of miles away is being felt right here at home. Guys, back to you. Stephanie, thank you. Our coverage of the war continues in every newscast, and 24 7 on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. A floor vote is scheduled for tuesday to approve ohio congressman jim jordan, but right now jordan is significantly short of the votes he will need. On the other side, democrats are refusing to support jordan, who some believe was near the very epicenter of the january 6th capitol attack. Disenchanted east bay voters have launched an effort to recall Alameda County District Attorney pamela price. Organizers were out over the weekend gathering signature. Theyll need to collect more than 73,000 for it to end up on the ballot. Recall supporters call price too soft on crime. We need a da thats going to go ahead and fight for the people, fight for everybody in Alameda County. Somebody thats going to be there, honest, to give us justice, true justice, not a sentence that is nothing or a case that wasnt even reviewed or taken up by the das office. Price supporters, meantime, held what they call a day of service yesterday. They argue her Restorative Justice programs are already working and will continue to be refined the longer she holds office. Taking people, arresting them and putting them in a box for five to ten years and then bringing them back out with 200 is not the answer. We finally have a District Attorney who recognizes that and is using databacked policies that have been shown to work throughout the country to try to provide different outcomes. Its difficult to hear people who are relying on law and order rhetoric without any foundation of facts. In a recent interview last week, price defended her policies, suggesting the latest crime spike started long before she became da nine months ago. New at 6 00, starting today, a new south bay programs offers another option for dui suspects to sober up. Its a Pilot Program launched by san jose and Santa Clara County. Officers will take firsttime dui offenders to a recovery station first, rather than booking them immediately into the Santa Clara County jail. The program is meant to save officers time, cut down on the lengthy booking process. Officers can then make the decision if the dui suspect will be booked immediately or be booked later, after waiting it out at a recovery station. San francisco coffee lovers had months to brace for this, but it wont make it any easier to swallow. Today the original philz coffee location closes its doors forever. It opened 20 years ago in the Mission District. Philz announced the closure in early august, saying they chose not to renew the lease. The company said workers would be offered positions at other locations. Lets take a live look outside. How about walnut creek . The sun just starting to peek out in the east. Lets check in with kari. Were seeing some spots that are clear, but other areas that are dealing with dense fog. We can see the Golden Gate Bridge, it is really hard to see. We also have patches of fog that reduces visibility to near zero. As we go throughout the day, were going to see more clouds coming in. As the system approaches, it could bring in spotty showers for parts of the north bay. Were looking at a few hundredths of an inch. Look at the timeline, thats later on this evening. We are going to make it through much of the day with just seeing more clouds coming in. And then a couple of spotty showers in parts of the north bay later this evening. As far as temperatures, this is really nice, with highs in the mid70s for fremont, 75 in hayward, and reaching up to 82 in fairfield today. But we are going to see much hotter temperatures ahead, so enjoy the nice cooldown while it lasts. Well talk more about this and whats ahead coming up. Mike, youre focused on crashes in the east bay. Build, typical pattern. More focused in the key commute spots. Southbound 680 right around the sunol exit, word theres a crash and one vehicle that might be wedged under the bumper of the other. Nothing dramatic on first gloss, but its there in the middle of the freeway. South 880, two crashes, one at 92 and another toward union city. Those both combined are adding slowing for the nimitz. As you head south, this is the commute time toward the south bay. The rest of the east bay, a smooth drive. As we look ahead to traffic all week, theres a tech conference right here in the castro and that does have two blocks of the castro blocked. That means the transit through the area will be affected. Watch for lots of surface street congestion as folks are crossing the roadways. North bay, 131, tiburon boulevard at highway 101, overnight work, and today theyre doing tree removal work at the interchange. Watch for that. Everything else for the morning commute pretty standard. That starts at 7 00 right after today in the bay. We continue to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month this morning, and the Cleveland Clinic and san jose based researchers are working on a new vaccine aimed at stopping the disease. The potential breakthrough focuses on a protein that typically only exists when a woman is breast feeding. But scientific findings indicate it is also made when cancer cells arise. The vaccine focuses on destroying the protein at its earliest formation, after child bearing. We spoke with the very first woman to be injected with that shot. Shes a triple negative Breast Cancer survivor, and now she says after the vaccine, its helping calm her worries the disease will return. With triple negative theres nothing that we take beyond treatment that kind of puts our mind at ease that there wont be a recurrence. So you almost become like desperate and just wanting some type of peace of mind that the headache you have isnt a brain tumor or the pain in our arm isnt bone cancer. It just, to me, was really something that was exciting. The vaccine is still in its trial phase. Its also not yet approved for widespread use. Researchers are primarily focused on treating triple negative Breast Cancer survivors, with the idea of expanding use later to others. 6 48.
