Last weeks strike. The new details just coming into our newsroom this morning. This is today in the bay. Good friday morning to you. 6 00 right now. Thanks for starting your day with us. Im laura garcia. Im Ginger Conejero saab. Marcus has the morning off. Welcome to this friday the 13th. Its a busy day on the roads. Before we check in with mike, well check in with meteorologist vianey arana. I do not claim the friday the 13th energy. No, thank you, i just got back, yall. Well talk about the weather, because it is going to cool off just enough for you to enjoy your weekend with just a little bit of cloud cover. Now, San Francisco, 58 degrees right now. Notice the wind speeds are calm. If you look at the icons, this is when the high clouds start to roll in, and actually in San Francisco, it is one of those spots that will likely see shower activity, especially tonight into early tomorrow morning. Temperaturewise, well max out in the upper 60s. San jose, notice the wind speeds are light. By about 10 00, 11 00, we see a bump up into the 70s. So a good mix of sun and high clouds rolling through. Then those comfortable 70s before we see a change in the forecast heading into saturday morning. The north bay temperatures will remain slightly cooler, but also those showers will move in early. Mike, how are the roads doing . Well start with the bridge out of richmond, same situation. Three right lane blocked and the signs will indicate wide loads are not able to access, but regular trucks and cars are okay. So that will continue today. At the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights are on and they have been since about 5 35. Traditional lighter friday traffic, no major backup here. Some slowing over the incline. Some slowing for highway 37. A little bit for highway 4 through concord, nothing major. A smooth drive south 880, the crash is cleared over to the shoulder. A mild build for the south bay. We begin with breaking news in the end of a bay area labor battle. Kaiser workers who walked off the job last week are announcing a new contract deal. The Union Message says Front Line Health Care workers have reached a tentative agreement with kaiser. Some 75,000 kaiser employees nationwide walked off the job for three days, many based in Northern California. It was the largest ever Health Care Strike in u. S. History. Theres still no word on the terms of the deal or the timeline for ratification. On to breaking news in the middle east, here is a live look at gaza city, where theres a new turn for more than 1 Million People living there, the clock is now ticking, after israel ordered more than a Million People in northern gaza to evacuate in what is now a little more than 12 hours. This is new video showing those falling leaflets dotting the skies above gaza city. The u. N. Already says the order is impossible to meet in that short amount of time. And while an Israeli Ground offensive has not yet been announced, this may signal that one is imminent. This morning, the confirmed number of deaths on both sides now topping 2,700. Meanwhile, in washington, Capitol Police are enhancing security, barriers are being placed on city streets, as hamas calls for a day of anger today. In other cities across the country, including right here in the bay area, Law Enforcement is stepping up patrols of jewish houses of worship and businesses. Past calls for action or socalled day of rage have often led to large demonstrations and unrest in gaza and the west bank. All of this plays out as u. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken joins leaders of the Palestinian Authority and other leaders in the arab world to help prevent escalation. We have more from brie jackson, live in washington. What are the latest developments right now . Reporter good morning, ginger. The white house says that today President Biden is expected to speak with families of some of the americans believed to be held hostage in gaza. Meanwhile, u. S. Defense secretary lloyd austin is visiting israel to determine what military aid is needed to help in their war with hamas. As the war between israel and hamas militants rages on, the Biden Administration is working with regional partners on efforts to help prevent this conflict from spreading. What weve seen here is something, to most of us, almost unimaginable. Secretary of state blinken a joivg in jordan this morning. He was on the ground in israel thursday, getting a firsthand at the aftermath of saturdays surprise attack, delivering a message of report to israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu and survivors. The outpouring has been incredible in the United States, and, again, its very, very heartfelt. You can count on us. Well be there. Reporter as the fighting continues, the Biden Administration says its working to get americans out of harms way. The United States government will arrange charter flights to provide transportation from israel to sites in europe. Reporter in washington, d. C. Thursday night, lawmakers held a vigil on the steps of the u. S. Capitol to remember the lives lost, standing in solidarity with israel, while strongly condemning the assault by hamas. We cannot let these terrorists, this isislike, nazilike people win. Reporter the u. S. Is considering providing more resources to help israel. Complicating the matter, uncertainty over who will be the next house speaker. And the clock is ticking for the house to elect a new speaker, after majority leader Steve Scalise told republicans that he was dropping his bid for the top position. Now, among other things, aid for israel could be tied up as the speaker fight drives on, ginger. So much to watch out for. Thank you, brie jackson. Tensions over the war in the middle east are boiling over on the stanford campus. Thats where one instructor is suspended for what the school is calling the identitybased targeting of students. Today in the bays kris sanchez is live in morning. Kris, explain how Something Like this happened. Reporter so this appears to be a class for firstyear students at stanford and this is about fewer than two dozen students that were exposed to this. But the university is investigating what it says is not an act of Academic Freedom, but rather something that singled students out based on their identities. I want to take a live look this morning at the stanford campus where we know the lecturer is not going to be in the classroom pending the results of the universitys investigation. Theyre trying to figure out the specifics of what happened and have not released the identity of that instructor. Now, according to stanford university, the instructor asked israeli and jewish students to identify themselves and then had those students go stand in a corner of the classroom, and then said this is how palestinians are treated. Now, according to students who spoke to the chronicle, the lecturer also told about 18 students this was a lesson about colonialism and zionism, blaming the war on people who want to retain israel as a jewish homeland. Stanfords statement reads, in part, quote, Academic Freedom does not permit the identitybased targeting of students. The instructor in this course is not currently teaching while the University Works to ascertain the facts of the situation. Now, we have been hearing palestinian voices from the conflicts reminding people that the Palestinian People are not the same as hamas. Hamas may claim that they are a freedomseeking organization, but based on the violence and terrorist activity that hamas conducts, the United States says this is a terrorist organization that does not represent all Palestinian People. By the way, this is complicated for us grownups. We know that it can be complicated for little ones, too. I did put up a link from my social pages from the American Academy of pediatrics parenting blog about how to talk to your children about this complicated situation in the middle east. Well definitely check that out. Good advice there. Thank you, kris. Our coverage of the war continues on all of our newscasts. For the latest updates 24 7, visit our website, nbcbayarea. Com. What can we expect later today and into the weekend . Some cooling, some cloud cover, and even some rain. Not a whole lot. Not going to be a washout of a weekend. Dont let the sound of rain scare you off, especially if you live in the north bay, because it will eventually move out rather quickly. Satellite radar right now, you can see we do have some high clouds. Not very visible because its still dark, but once the sun comes up, you notice the mix of sun and clouds. The cold front is dropping down from canada. You can see it making its approach from the pacific, beginning to develop. That is expected to move in starting tonight into early tomorrow morning. This is going to include napa, sonoma, ukiah, really far north, and then areas south of the Golden Gate Bridge should be just a little cloudy and slightly cooler. Mike, how are those gas prices . The ones i see are looking lower, same on our charts. Leading the list today, union city, 4. 69 at National Petroleum on mission boulevard. Same price, same gas chain in san jose, 4. 69 on south king road. San francisco, considerably higher for the city and county. The arco with a low of 5. 23. Thank you for sharing prices. We are seeing a lower trend. On the roadways, a smooth drive. Its friday, with a lighter build. Laura talked about the closure north 101 where the exclamation point is. This week on our podcast sand hill road, well take a look at the health of venture capital, the money that helps create startups like tiktok, and that money has been drying up lately. I dont think i can afford the discount. No kidding. We didnt win the lottery this week. They were talking about it earlier, if we in i dont think we could afford it then. The weather is going to be comfortable. I think thats going to be the word for the week and then it gets hot next week. Now, we have a cold front moving in. Thats already showing up beautifully on satellite radar. You can see the distinction between the clouds and the rain beginning to form. Look how stunning this shot of San Francisco is. Good morning. Now, we are going to be seeing those high clouds already rolling through. You can see it there. I talked about how its already forming in the pacific. This is what i was mentioning. You can see it right here. There it is. The green that you see there is where the rain is starting to develop. Thats going to begin to move as early as tonight into early tomorrow morning, and your hourly temperatures will also be impacted as well, with slight cooling. Noticeable in some spots. Lets take you through the forecast for today. By 12 00, youll notice weve still got 70s on the map. Through concord, 65, these are our warmer areas. Meanwhile, around the coastline weve got 60s, so cooler weather through San Francisco, 62 degrees. By 4 30, we do still have the possibility of some 80s. Now, for tomorrow morning, cool 40s and 50s to start. And then notice by 1 00 for saturday afternoon, lovely day. That system is going to clear out. Well have a nice mix of sun and clouds. Somewhat of a crisp morning and saturday evening to start our weekend. Now, shower chance time, lets get into that. You see the rain is already starting to form in the pacific. Now lets get into the timestamps. Friday, 9 00, you can see it making its approach. Santa rosa, novato. You notice a lot of this stays offshore. When it does move in, it kind of falls apart before it reaches land. If you live in San Francisco or around the peninsula, you could see Early Morning showers at around 7 30, santa rosa, novato, even through parts of oakland could see a spotty chance or two. If you live down in san jose and gilroy, youre not going to get any of that rain, even through the afternoon. We keep a rain chance for San Francisco through about 3 30. And then by 5 00, aside from cloud cover, you can see the rest of the bay area clears out quite nicely and we see 70s in the forecast through parts of the interior. Lets get a check of the roads with mike. Lets start with a couple of toll plazas. Lets start with the Richmond Bridge toll plaza. Weve got the bay bridge toll plaza. Lanes are starting to build in. At the Richmond Bridge, were starting to fill in lanes. The right lanes continue until further notice. Its heavier than your typical friday but nothing major. Its not affecting the eastshore freeway. Highway 37 maintains a smooth flow, and a bigger build but still mild for highway 4. The rest of the bay moves smoothly. Slowing for the nimitz. Back to you. Thanks a lot. Using music to heal. Im Ginger Conejero saab. Marcus washington is off today. We start with breaking news. The end of a bitter bay area labor battle, kaiser workers who walked off the job last week are announcing a new contract deal. The Union Message says Front Line Health Care workers have reached a tentative agreement with kaiser. Some 75,000 kaiser employees nationwide walked off the job for three days, many based in Northern California. It was the largest ever Health Care Strike in u. S. History. There is still no word on the terms of the deal or the timeline for ratification. To continue breaking news were following in the middle east, israel is ordering the evacuation of more than 1 million palestinians in the northern part of gaza. This is a live look at gaza city, which is included in that order. Israel dropped leaflets telling people to move to what is essentially the territorys southern half. Weve seen videos showing people in gaza city franticly packing belongings and piling into any vehicle that will get them out. This car absolutely packed to the brim, people riding on the hood, on the trunk, in the trunk. According to our calculations, palestinians now have about seven hours to vacate. The u. N. Says there is no way to evacuate that many people in short in such a short period of time. The number of confirmed deaths on both sides tops 2,700. Across the United States, Law Enforcement agencies are increasing patrols after a former hamas leader called for today to be a global day of anger. Today in the bays bob redell is live in the east bay. Bob, do we know of any Credible Threats of violence so far . Reporter good morning to you, ginger and laura. Fortunately, to answer your question, we do not know of any Credible Threats of violence against this jewish congregation behind me in pleasanton or any other congregations or jewish organizations here in the bay area or Northern California. This was the scene last night at the addisonpenzak Jewish Community center in los gatos, where the organization came together to pray for peace, after this call for a day of anger. Law enforcement here in the bay area is aware of and on alert for this potential threat. In new york city, all officers have been ordered to show up to work today just in case. We want to be clear that these calls for a day of anger have historically yielded large demonstrations in the middle east, but no large scale attacks in the United States. They thought it wasnt enough, what they have done, and that they keep on pushing any potential boundary, human boundary that you can think. And at the same time, i am super proud that our Community Gathers today, that we didnt suspend it. Fear is not going to win or to beat us. Our Police Department is doing a tremendous job of monitoring the situation and connecting with community leaders, being out and engaged in the community, visiting synagogues, jewish schools, and theyre going to continue to be very visible and active in the community tomorrow, but going forward. Were going to take care of our jewish neighbors. Reporter that was san jose mayor matt mahan, who attended last nights service in los gatos. In San Francisco, a Police Department spokesperson tells us that officers are patrolling places of worship and other Community Centers that have expressed concerns, quote, we ask the community to alert the sfpd if they see any potential threats or suspicious behavior. At this time, we do not have information of any imminent threats of violence. On a statewide level, the California Office of Emergency Management said in a statement, while we are aware of statements made about potential threats for today, friday, october 13th, i want to emphasize that no specific and credible threat to california has been identified at this time. Reporting live here in pleasanton, bob redell, today in the bay. Thanks for that update, bob. Lots to watch out for. With commercial airlines still mostly avoiding the war zone, the white house is now forming its own plans to bring stranded americans home. We have a live look at sfo. The u. S. Government is now planning to use charter planes to fly americans out of israel, but theyll still have to find connecting flights to their home airports. Among those anxious to get home, nbc bay area photojournalist edwin alvarado, who we spoke with again last night. After we head to the airport, we have to sign a waiver saying that we have to pay the country back the money, the ticket. I feel a little frustrated because last wednesday some countries with less resources, they sent planes to get people out. The United States have so many resources and the only help we are getting is a ticket to a different country, and from there, we have to figure out how to get home. The state Department Says flights will only operate to locations in europe, but thats where commercial flights will be available for travelers to ultimately return to their home airports. Another live look in gaza. Stay with us for the latest developments. Were keeping an eye on that situation 24 7 on our website. It is a great resource for constant updates. Head to nbcbayarea. Com and click on the link in the trending bar. A live look at the state capitol, where the deadline is approaching for Governor Newsom to sign or veto a slew of legislation before tomorrow. Now, since last weekend, hes signed nearly 500 bills out of 700, and blocked nearly 150. That would mean about 200 bills are left. Happening tonight, as well, Vector Control teams will be spraying in the south bay to prevent west nile virus. It follows the recent discovery of mosquitos that tested positive in san jose and in milpitas. The area of coverage includes both sides of interstate 880 between 101 and great mall parkway. Spraying is expected to start at about 10 00 p. M. Well, the 49ers are shooting for 60 to start the season sunday in cleveland. Lets hope the roll continues. First, theyre going to have to beat one of the best teams in the leagues top defense department. The browns actually have the nfls topranked defense in terms of yards allowed, and brock purdy is expecting a pretty good challenge. Theyre, i think, one of the best in the league, and a really talented group. Im excited to go against them. The niners may have just received another key bit of news, all reports indicate browns starting Quarterback Deshaun Watson will miss his Third Straight game due to injury. Last weeks backup qb was a rookie and not all rookies play like brock purdy did. Were loving him now. As for game time weather, vianey arana is here looking at conditions when the niners, who travel really well, theyre going to take the field early sunday. How are those fans going to be doing . It is an open stadium and they are talking about rain this weekend in cleveland. But it looks like were going to get lucky as far as rain on sunday. So that storm system is going to bring the possibility of rain just before the start of the game and after. So rain chances right now look likely before 10 00 a. M. , which the game starts at 10 00 a. M. Youll still notice the cloud cover. Here is the thing. I dont know how the rain from the overnight saturday into sunday morning will impact the stadium itself as far as rain delays for clearing and things like that. But it looks like the rain is expected to bring back some possibility of some showers after the game, so right around 2 00. So maybe in the Fourth Quarter we could start to notice a little drizzle activity. Temperaturewise, 50s and 60s, and then a mix of sun and clouds. I think this is decent football weather. You want to wear a light coat if youll be traveling. Keep in mind rain chances will continue late sunday, so whatever you do after the game will likely be impacted by rain. Weve been talking about our own system here, and thats already making its approach through parts of the napa area. Expect to see cloud cover. Late tonight, so really late, im talking overnight into early saturday morning, those shower chances move in, and then by saturday afternoon things clear out. Now, we are going to remain a little cooler because of the cold front, even into sunday. After sunday, things start to warm right back up. The reason for that is we get another High Pressure system thats going to build. But just to give you an idea, theres that system building just off the coast, and that is dropping down from canada. So its going to give us a falllike saturday morning, which i personally enjoy the crisp weather. Mike, how is the traffic doing . I, too, like the crisp weather and the slower build at the bay bridge toll plaza. I did just notice the hov lanes jamming up. Thats usually indicating something going on just past the toll plaza. It was a mild build there. Also a mild but slow build over at the Richmond Bridge, more traffic because fewer lanes right now from earlier this week. A build for highway 4, nothing dramatic. Well focus on the closure tonight at northbound 101 from whipple all the way north to brittan, the cordilleras bridge will be closed. So after 10 00, no more access until they reopen monday morning at 5 00. The alternate heading up toward 92, 280 is the easy alternate. You can use surface streets like el camino. 84, if youre heading north from the south bay and were planning on heading across to the east bay, use the dumb narten bridge or 237, because those will keep you shy of the closure. Back to you. Good advice. Thanks, mike. A new treatment to limit the impact of rsv in young children. Coming up, were moving you forward with the new antibody and the symptoms every parent should look out for. Coming up, were going to be talking about that partial Solar Eclipse that will be happening tomorrow morning. An exciting time for sky watchers. Well have the details coming up. A beautiful sky, but the bay bridge backing up. There was indeed a crash just past the toll plaza. The hov lanes are starting to move better. Well track that closely. Meanwhile, san jose shows the south bay starting to build, even on a friday we do have more traffic. More coming up. It is 6 44 right now. Secretary of defense lloyd austin is on his way to israel. Secretary of state blinken meeting with arab states on what may be the eve of a major invasion of gaza. This could be a huge 24 hours. It looks like its going to happen very soon, maybe over the weekend, a massive battle. Our chief diplomat, secretary of state, met with israelis yesterday, in orderen right now, qatar, saudi arabia later today. We expect hell visit egypt as well. Video just into our newsroom of the secretary of state meeting with the Palestinian Authority abbas. They want to keep the west Bank Palestinians out of the fight. The fatah party is part of the plo and they accept israel. It is not hamas. Its worth reading up on this and reminding ourselves the difference between fatah, hezbollah, hamas and all the other news worthy words to understand whats factual and whats not. Case in point, there was a lot of talk online that hamas was using that 6 billion in unfrozen iranian money, but thats not true. That money was never distributed. Now, apparently, it wont be. America and qatar have cut off irans access. Iran supports hamas, though blinken tells our lester holt theres no evidence iran had involvement in the attacks. Iran has had a long relationship with hamas. Hamas wouldnt be hamas without the support over many, many years from iran. When it comes to this specific attack in this moment, we dont have direct evidence that iran was involved in the attack, either in planning it or carrying it out. But that could change. Back here in america, we have absolutely no idea whats going to happen next at the capitol, as the u. S. House searches for a leader. Congressman Steve Scalise, the Republican Caucus choice to be the next speaker of the house, says he will not be the next speaker of the house, which means the house continues to be paralyzed. It cannot pass a law, it cannot fund israel, it cant fund our own government, it cant name a post office until it has a speaker. This country is counting on us to come back together. This house of representatives needs a speaker and we need to open up the house again. But, clearly, not everybody is there and theres still schisms that have to get resolved. Were a ship without a rudder and im thoroughly disappointed in the process, and i just pray to god that we find something. There is something, but its a conundrum is republicans have gotten themselves into. There are 217 republicans in the house. That means any candidate for speaker can only afford to lose four of his own partys votes to become speaker, if every other republican votes for him. Or he could find votes somewhere else. Where . The democrats. A republican speaker could make a deal with democrats to get the votes, but it would mean he or she would have to give those democrats something in exchange. Two things to watch out for this weekend, obviously what appears to be a major imminent attack on gaza as israel urges more than a Million People to move south away from the battle. And pols go to the polls on sunday. That countrys support for ukraine may rest on who is the next leader of poland. So much going on in our world. Thank you very much, scott. And meantime, parents want to protect their kids. October is actually rsv awareness month, and for parents it should be a reminder theres a new tool in the fight to try to prevent it. Rsv is a respiratory virus that can be fatal for the youngest of children. In past years, hundreds of children under 5 have died from extremely severe symptoms. Tens of thousands every year are hospitalized. Now theres a new shot, an antibody recommended by the cdc that can protect infants and children at increased risk.
