Israel to visit family only to find himself stuck in the middle of the conflict. Good morning. Thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. Im coquese washington. Im laura garcia. Israel says it has retaken control of its territory following an attack from hamas over the weekend. The death toll is climbing as there are also reports of new breaches into israeli territory in the south. Right now, more than 1,200 people have died in that violence. About 700 israeli and 570 in gaza, in the gaza strip, and west bank. Now, with more than 100 people believed to be held hostage, right now, nine americans have been confirmed dead. U. S. Military response to the fighting, the ships and aircraft moving closer to israel for support. The military tells nbc news those ships may not be fully in place for a few days. Nbcs Richard Engle is reporting from the borders of the gaza strip. Reporter we are just outside of the israeli town near the gaza border. On this side, you can see gaza. You can see plumes of smoke, and they are from where hamas is continuing to launch rocket, continuing to launch mortars and missiles at israel, and those plumes are from where the israelis have been carrying out counterstrikes. Inside the city, this is one of the areas where most of the people have left now, this is one of the areas where hamas militants entered in an infiltration. Just a short while ago, we heard there was another attempt to breach israels boarder to enter into israeli towns and communities and continue hamas killing spree. This is very much not over. As we were a short while ago we came under fire ourselves. Many people in these towns are evacuating, and were seeing military vehicle, israeli tanks and heavy armor, heading this way. A protest got heated yesterday as people on both sides of the issues clashed in San Francisco. These are the two sides. The violence hits close to home for so many here in the bay area who worry for their families in israel and on the gaza strip. Nbc bay areas Ginger Conejero saab joins us live in San Francisco this morning. She talked with one bay Area Business owner whos actually in tel aviv right now. What did he say, ginger . Reporter he happened to be in israel for a double celebration. He flew in last week. It was his dads 80th birthday and a bar mitzvah when this war broke out. He said at first he was in disbelief of what he was hearing, but he quickly realized there were real bomb warnings. Those are the bomb sirens manny heard early saturday morning, warning him and others in the area to seek protection at a nearby bomb shelter immediately. He did so seven times on saturday. Two of the times the sirens went off i actually wasnt near a shelter. I was in synagogue. I came to synagogue to grab my father. And i watched as over 100 children ran frantically around the synagogue trying to find a place to protect themselves. Needless to say, it was a harrowing experience. I actually saw a place not far from me where one of the missiles did hit and watched as a giant black plume of smoke kind of filled the sky while jews from the area i was in were praying and celebraing and dancing. It was something ill never forget, honestly. Reporter Something Else that he is not going to forget, an image like this. Its a picture of an Apartment Building destroyed by a missile just a couple blocks away from manny is now staying in tel aviv. He says the proximity of this war and his experience is the most jarring part. On the same note, shes also jumped into action with thousands of other israelis who have volunteered to get goods and support to those who need it most. He says his work will not stop there. He will continue volunteering throughout his stay in israel. Now, city hall was lit up in blue and white lights last night for what mayor london breed says shows the citys solidarity with the israeli people. Where we are this morning, which is on montgomery street outside the israeli consulate, which was a site of demonstrations and protests yesterday, there were propalestinian demonstrators as well as israel supporters here yesterday. It is a very different scene, very quiet here so far. But there are other rallies scheduled in other parts of the city, including city hall later at 30. Laura . A lot of passion on both sides. Thank you very much, ginger. Meantime, President Biden and the u. S. Congress promising support for israel in its time of need. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi says lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are ready to authorize funding if necessary. Scott mcgrew continues our coverage here. Good morning. The california congresswoman made those comments over the weekend. Take a look. I want you to know that in the congress of the united states, and weve had many calls yesterday and this morning already, there is unity, bipartisan unity, in support of what we need to do, whether its militarily, whether its diplomatically, whether its financially, to help the israeli people. The truth is congress is not ready. The house is missing a speaker and cannot vote on anything, aid to israel, not even a vote of condemnation for the attack, until it elects a new leader. That part of the u. S. Government is paralyzed. Texas republican michael mccaul, held of the House Foreign Affairs committee, asking, what kind of message are we sending to our adversaries when we cant govern, when were dysfunctional, when we dont even have a speaker of the house . Youll remember, republican contingents led a revolt against Speaker Mccarthy after he worked with democrats on continuing resolutions to keep the government open. Mccarthy spoke with reporters earlier this morning and asked, can you imagine if the u. S. Tried to respond to the crisis right now was shut down, the whole government, not just the house, were shut down . To be fair, theres not a huge urgency when it comes to military support of israel. We do this on a tenyear cycle, so everything will be okay. Israel is and will be well armed. But the lack of a speaker does Mean Congress cannot do anything. It cant add to it, cant make any sort of decisions until they have that. And what does it say about our country as well. Right. There is a vote for speaker expected on wednesday, but theres no guarantee that will happen. Correct. There are two major candidate, although today mccarthy indicated if the republicans wanted him back really . Its interesting, isnt it. Right. Jim jordan and scalese, but possibly mccarthy as well. But theres no guarantee because it took so many votes just to get mccarthy in there. Right. It is a fractured republican party. Last week i thought he said, im not going it again. Yeah. Thank you very much. Every day, a different story. Oil prices also spiking in the wake of the attack on israel. Experts dont expect longterm impact and say oil and gas prices are now falling in the u. S. After the initial price jump. They say it wont likely impact gasoline prices unless the fighting spreads to other countries and the oilproducing region. The fighting in israel is having an impact on the tech world. Chipmaker nvidia has canceled a conference that was scheduled to take place in tel aviv next week. The company cited safety concerns. That conference was set to deal with the topic of ai. No word on if the conference will be rescheduled. Tonight on nightly news, lester holt is in israel with the latest on the violence as he travels from jordan. His team faces a tight time limit. We have a large team from nbc. Well be going to the worlder in a caravan. Theres a little bit of urgency in that its a 2 1 2hour drive and the border is closing at odd hours. We want to get there as soon as we can. Catch up on lesters journey tonight on nightly news at 3 30 and 6 30. For federal workers today is officially marking columbus day, a holiday. Here in california, not everyone will be celebrating, but many people are celebrating Indigenous Peoples day. Technically, today no longer a state holiday, but several major u. S. Banks, including bank of america, wells fargo, and citi bank are closed. Others, including chase and td banks, will remain open. Theres also no u. S. Postal service, but ups and fed ex are operating as usual. Taking a live look outside, alcatraz island, hoyt tower. What a change in the temperatures. Warm over the weekend. 90s. No more of that. Rain showing up just around San Francisco. This is the Golden Gate Bridge looking north ward towards marin county. Starting to see light rain, 62 degrees. Looking at the radar, the rain has set up over Sonoma County and a little more offshore. Santa rosa starting to see the rain rates pick up. Were seeing that into marin county there. That was the view from the Golden Gate Bridge, light rain across the marin county hilltops, light rain near vallejo, not as much as, though, south of San Francisco and san jose. That will take some time to work its way southward, probably not until the evening for the south bay. By midday, those showers move down the peninsula into san jose around 6 00 or 7 00 this evening. Allday cloud cover means our highs will stay cool, mostly 60s to low 70s. And we do have another chance of more showers tomorrow with a second weather system dropping down the coast. Well look at that and how much rain were expecting in the next few days in our forecast in ten minutes. Well check back with you. Thanks, rob. Were moments away from finding out if theres a new record for the worlds heaviest pumpkin. Nbc bay areas bob redell joins us live from the 50th annual Half Moon Bay pumpkin weighoff. They have some big ones out there this year, bob. Reporter they do. There are five left. There are hundreds of people here just off main street waiting for those last five to be weighed. Right now, the heaviest one this year so far is just over 1,600 pounds. This is what they believe is going to be the fifth heaviest. Theyre doing this based on how its measured and eyesight. What theyre doing is the officials are lowering it onto the scale right now. They had to check underneath first make sure theres no decay, that its not split open. If that were the case, it would be dqd. This one is from somebody from willows, california. Were going to find out here shortly how much this weighed. The Current Record for north america was set here last year at 2,560 pounds. Travis singer of minnesota. He is back this year with a pumpkin that he thinks could possibly set a world record. That would be a 2,700 pound. This was travis earlier this morning. Youve measured it, which gives you an estimation of the weight. Whats it measuring at . About 2,400. Reporter but theres leeway here. Theres leeway. Theres a good chance it could go much heavier and a chance it could go lighter too. We dont know until it hits the scale. So, look at this one, huh . Holy toledo. Reporter okay. Were about to find out how much this one weighs. Theres mike, the guy with the chico shirt, at the microphone. Lets listen. Yeah. Turn on the mic for mike. His fourth year here. Hes been doing it for several years. The number to beat right now is over 1,600 pounds. No one is thinking thats going to be the heaviest pumpkin here this year because last year, again, with the 2,500. This is the 50th year, so in 1974, the winning pumpkin was only 132 pounds. When i started covering this on and off in 2000, it was at 940 pounds. Over the past, lets see, 20plus years, these pumpkins have gained 1,500 pounds. I just want to find out how much this pumpkin weighs. My guess is 1,735. Thats my guess. And the number is . Wow. I am horrible, horrible at judging the weight of pumpkins. You know, the thing about these pumpkins, they look big, but, you know, the density, you dont know how dense they are. Let me just do some quick math. Were at 1,630something for first place. Hes probably currently in third or fourth place. Unfortunately, thats not going to hold up. The winner of this gets 9 per pound. If someone sets a new world record, which, again, is 2,700 pounds, just over, theyd win 30,000. So, were still we have four pumpkins left in Half Moon Bay, 50th annual. Quite a milestone. Marcus, laura . Keep tabs on whats going on there. Start growing now for next year. Exact. Ly new details on the flurry of legislation governor gavin newsom has until saturday to approve or veto. The governor over the weekend vetoed a bill that would have prevented Insurance Companies from charging more than 35 for monthly insulin drugs. They argue the cost would still be passed on to customers with higher premiums, and the state will soon manufacture its own lowcost version. The bills author, San Francisco state senator scott wiener, calls it a missed opportunity that will keep thousands of diabetics on hold for muchneeded financial relief. He could also veto a bill that would make free condoms available at all public high schools. He argued that measure is too costly with the budget deficits. The bay area is mourning the death of chef michael from an allergic reaction. He had his own cooking show on the food network. He competed on the next iron chef. Were shining a light on the way people can detect cancer early. One in every eight women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their life. That is an astonishingly high rate. So even if not affected directly by cancer, someone you know might be. Guidelines have changed. The Task Force Recommends women get a breast screening or maam gam at age 40, ten years earlier than a previous recommendation. This means doctors can catch it early better than other kinds of tests. Theyre looking for abnormalities in the breast tissue, such as a nodule or distortion. Theyre also looking for calcification, little white specks that can occur in the breast tissue. Many of these things are not going to be things that you feel on a breast exam. Theyre only going to be seen on the mammogram. The fda is requiring off Breast Centers to notify patients of their breast density after a mammogram. People with more dense breasts are at a higher risk for Breast Cancer. The American Cancer Society has more information on their website. A live look back outside there at Half Moon Bay. This is where the pumpkin weighoff is happening right now. We saw one pumpkin being weighed. It was over 1,500 pounds. Not even close to where they think the winner will be. Hopefully we see a world record, because that person not only gets the money for having the largest pumpkin, 30,000. It would be nice if it happens today. Thats a lot of pie. Good weather for it. It is. Pumpkinweighing weather. Finally feeling like fall. It is. Hot coffee as opposed to the iced. Over the weekend it was 80s and 90s. The big cooldown continues. You can see the cloud cover around the area and some drizzle in San Francisco. Thats the view, 60s in San Francisco, and well upgrade the drizzle to some light rain at times. Its dropping out of the north bay. 63 degrees right now, and more cloud cover into walnut creek, also 63 degrees, and more 60s into san jose. Cloudy skies, southeast wind at 8 miles per hour. Now, high temperatures today not going to move much from those mid60s we have right now, bay side maybe some low 70s south of san jose and mid60s around the north bay. Look at the view on the radar. The best weve seen this morning, most is falling across Sonoma County, where we expect totals around the hilltops, down towards mount tam eventually. You can see the light rain around san rafael, light rain, a little more offshore. This will take time as it progresses from north to south heading towards the evening. By 2 00 and 3 00, most is still around the Upper Peninsula towards the inland north bay. And then by 6 00 and 7 00 now, spotty showers expected around san jose, and well continue to see a few more showers at times overnight. Now, top rain totals as you saw on the radar view will likely be up in northwestern Sonoma County, the higher hill ls of napa county. As we move forward from 11 00 tonight, add in what falls on top of it by tuesday, you can see those numbers moving a little bit, most places below a tenth of an inch of rain. They moved because tuesday we have another weather system dropping in right around midday till about tuesday afternoon. 3 00 now. Very similar to the conditions we have outside midday today. That will be our Second Chance for showers. After that, it will clear, and well be watching closely sky cover heading towards the weekend. Wednesday and thursday, temperatures come up, 70s and 80s inland. Saturday morning we have that partial Solar Eclipse for the morning. But that eclipse might get eclipse build cloud cover around the bay area. That is an issue. Well be watching this closely, central coast, southern california. Should see more of those clear skies for the weekend. So, two days of shower chances around the bay area, a bit of a warming trend for San Francisco. You can see upper 60s, the low 70s. Thursday and friday should be the warm els days of the week. And for inland areas, well eventually break out of these 60s and 70s. More 80s possible by thursday and friday. Then stay tuned for that astronomical forecast for the weekend. Right now looks like high clouds at times and maybe a few more showers on approach to the north bay by the end of the weekend. Back to you. Glad i didnt wash my car. Thank you. Happening now, cal fire is doing a burn in Sonoma County. Firefighters will continue the burn through tomorrow.
