Is sending new assets to that region the uss Gerald Ford Carrier Strike Group is headed toward the eastern mediterranean. That is closer to the israeli coast. It includes four guided missile destroyers this is significant as a show of force but also as a demonstration of american support. It leads to a big question which is whether u. S. Forces could become directly involved that strike group is meant to deter hamas and iran, but the u. S. Right now is not ruling out that they could be used to help israel in this war more air power and also on the way. That includes f35s, the most advanced fighter jet the u. S. Has. And so is military equipment, craig, with more expected in the days ahead theres the military response all of this, of course, happening without a permanent speaker of the house Kevin Mccarthy out so what do we know about how that could affect the u. Obviously if youre further in the south, you have much less time but i had never heard it before. My kids obviously had no idea what was going on. We woke up, and we sort of scrambled and ran to the stairwell on saturday morning. That happened several more times as rocket fire was coming toward tel aviv it happened again in the evening. So you know, i was lucky enough to jump on line and got a flight out yesterday. But we were supposed to come back today, and many, many flights have been canceled its just unfathomable our experience was traumatic, but of course it is nothing compared to so many israelis down in the south just massacred with barbarism that we have not seen on a personal level, you experienced a up to of it. I want to the ask you as a congressman who covers and follows these issues, i mean, unfathomable is the word that comes to mind. Israel is known for having one of the most vaunted and fearsome military and intelligence at rat us in the world. Not only is it an intelligence failure but the fighters over the borders, military bases were overrun. Are you shocked by this . It is definitely surprising i was there with a congressional delegation in august, and we got, you know, briefings about how prepared, how the intelligence works, how iron dome works i did not expect to be experiencing how iron dome works, which you could hear the missiles intercepting the rockets above. But this is a i think what is most important right now, both in the congress and around this country, is that we have to stand with israel against this barbaric terrorism that is what it was. It is as bad or worse than i. S. I. S. , al qaeda what they did to those concertgoers in just indiscriminately massacring people on a field, taking Holocaust Survivors in wheelchairs as kidnapping, killing children, it is unconscionable and inhuman and we as americans who oppose terrorism of all sorts must stand with our ally israel in order to support them and so that they can protect their borders and make their country secure what do you think the response should be, especially visavis iran well, i think a lot remains to be seen as to what irans actual role was, and i know that there will be a intense study of exactly what role iran has played right now we in Congress Must rally together, and you mentioned at the beginning of this that we dont have a speaker of the house. We cannot actually do business so do you think that will put forward what Congress Wants to do in terms of supporting israel ultimately no, i hope not, because the administration has the authorities it needs right now to provide the support but we have to replenish iron dome we have to be able to expand them if, as jeremy said, rockets start coming from hezbollah in the north and more hamas in the south and even if this were to expand into the west bank, iron dome can be overwhelmed. You tracked her phone to gaza before i saw the video, i tracked her phone using her Gmail Account that was on my laptop, tracking her mobile phone. And it appeared in gaza. I cannot even fathom how you must have felt being on the other end of the phone and she was telling you there were terrorists in her house. Where was she . How did this unfold . How did she sound yeah, how did it how did it unfold . How did it happen . Where was she . Was she at your home was she visiting relatives how did this happen . Well, she was visiting my motherinlaw, her mother, in a Little Village next to gaza. We dont live there, but she went and visited her mother. And i, myself, stayed at home earlier the week she went on thursday, and i stayed to work she decided to stay there for one more night that was friday and saturday so they caught up to the invasion in saturday morning i know you want the world to see these images you want the world to know your wife and your daughters names if you could speak to those who are holding them, what would you say . What would your message be well, my wife duran, my daughter roz, less than five years old and my little baby girl less than three years old, they are just little babies. They are not even girls, you know its babies. And im approaching to everyone who is willing to hear it doesnt matter if its the person who are holding them or the National Community or anyone else the message is these are babies. Babies, women, families are off limits you cant just take them and hold them in captivity i dont know what conditions are they held in i dont know if they ate enough, if theyre cold or hot, if they are hurt, if they are getting treatment right. We are just outside the town of sderot, on the border with gaza. Youll see over there plumes of smoke. That is inside the gaza strip. That is where hamas militants just a short while ago have been firing rockets, and theyve been firing rockets and missiles and moretors all day long into israel. The plumes are israeli counterfire trying to destroy the launch sites. This is one of the areas where hamas militants were able to penetrate, were able to saturday to break through the border fence and go on a killing spree. Those infiltrations are not over. Just a short while ago while we were here there were reports of yet another infiltration. Israels payback is under way with the army carrying out air strikes across the gaza strip this morning targeting hamas infrastructure and smuggling tunnels. Israeli reprials are constrained because hamas is Holding Dozens of israeli hostages hidden deep inside gaza. Israel didnt anticipate hamas had this capacity, and israels Intelligence Network missed the signs that it was coming. At 6 30 saturday morning, under the cover of a massive rocket barrage, hundreds of hamas fighters blasted their way through the fences around gaza and flew over Israeli Defenses in paragliders. Inside israel the militants showing a high level of training and preparation went on a killing spree. Israeli media say in all more than 700 israelis are dead, including more than 100 soldiers and police. Many of the dead, nearly 300, were at an all Night Dance Party in gaza. An imagine that captured the worlds attention is a woman is taken and begs for her life as her boyfriend is held watching helplessly. Negotiations are already under way, and i can tell you from diplomats directly involved that they are proving to be extraordinarily difficult. Hamas will commit war crimes and they will use those hostages as human shields. That complicates the mission to rescue them. It also complicates the mission to degrade and destroy hamas infrastructure in gaza. For those that dont follow this conflict closely, what exactly are they trying to accomplish . What was the goal . Or do we even know . Hamas goal is to eradicate israel full stop. But the context is important, craig, because right now israel is pursuing a huge peace deal with saudi arabia. The main sunni arab country in the region. And hamas, which has iran as its patron wants to stop that peace deal, wants to stop israel from integrating into the region. This is a stunning failure. We talked about israels Defense System. How did it happen . This was an intelligence breakdown, a Border Security breakdown, a coastal defense, a Civil Defense breakdown on multiple levels. The way hamas sent a thousand fighters to blow through that fortified fence and conduct a ground operation. Those israelis in those towns have been used to going into bomb shelters from rockets fire, but never have they experienced a ground assault like this people walking through their homes. But what has happened here with the aha in defining this syndrome is that theyre really wanting to reset the framework of how people think about cardiovascular disease risk, prevention and management. And they have done so, they have made it easy for us because they have put it into four stages. Lets talk about these stages so we know what to be aware of. Stage zero is where we hope to all be.
